Chapter 304All chaptersChapter 306

Verse 1 (skanda.5.305.1)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchenmahārāja kusumeśvaramuttamam | dakṣiṇe narmadākūle upapātakanāśanam ||

Shri Markandeya said: O great king, from there one should go to the supreme Kusumeshvara, on the southern bank of the Narmada, the destroyer of minor sins.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.305.2)

kāmena sthāpito devaḥ kusumeśvarasaṁjñitaḥ | khyātaḥ sarveṣu lokeṣu devadevaḥ sanātanaḥ ||

This god, installed by Kama (the god of desire), is known as Kusumeshvara; this eternal god of gods is renowned in all the worlds.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.305.3)

kāmo manobhavo viśvaḥ kusumāyudhacāpabhṛt | sa kāmān dadāti sarvān pūjito mīnaketanaḥ ||

Kama — born of the mind, all-pervading, bearing the bow with its flower-arrows, banner marked with a fish — when worshipped, grants every desire.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.305.4)

tena nirdagdhakāyena cārādhya parameśvaram | anaṅgena tathā prāptamaṅgitvaṁ narmadātaṭe ||

He, his body having been burnt to ashes, though bodiless, worshipped the supreme Lord and thereby regained embodiment on the bank of the Narmada.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.305.5)

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca| aṅgibhṛtasya nāśatvamanaṅgasya tu me vada | na śrutaṁ na ca me dṛṣṭaṁ bhūtapūrvaṁ kadācana ||

Yudhishthira said: Tell me of the destruction of the embodied one and his becoming bodiless; never before have I heard or witnessed such a thing.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.305.6)

etatsarvaṁ yathā vṛttamācakṣva dvijasattama | śrotumicchāmi viprendra bhīmārjunayamaiḥ saha ||

O best of the twice-born, relate all of this exactly as it happened. O foremost of brahmins, I wish to hear it together with Bhima, Arjuna, and the twins.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.305.7)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| ādau kṛtayuge tāta devadevo maheśvaraḥ | tapaścacāra vipulaṁ gaṅgāsāgarasaṁsthitaḥ ||

Shri Markandeya said: O son, at the beginning, in the Krita age, the god of gods, Maheshvara, stationed at the confluence of the Ganga and the sea, performed vast austerity.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.305.8)

tena sampāditā lokāstapasā sasurāsurāḥ | jagmuste śaraṇaṁ sarve devadevaṁ śacīpatim ||

By that austerity all the worlds, along with the gods and demons, were afflicted; then all of them went for refuge to the god of gods and to the lord of Shachi (Indra).

Verse 9 (skanda.5.305.9)

vyāpakaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ devadevo maheśvaraḥ | saṁtāpayati lokāṁstrīṁstannivāraya gopate ||

"The god of gods, Maheshvara, who pervades all beings, is scorching the three worlds; O protector, prevent this."

Verse 10 (skanda.5.305.10)

śrutvā tadvacanaṁ teṣāṁ devānāṁ balavṛtrahā | cintayāmāsa manasā tapovighnāyacādiśat ||

Hearing the gods' words, the slayer of Bala and Vritra pondered in his mind and gave orders to disturb that austerity.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.305.11)

apsarāṁ menakāṁ rambhāṁ ghṛtācīṁ ca tilottamām | vasantaṁ kokilaṁ kāmaṁ dakṣiṇānilamuttamam ||

He addressed the celestial nymphs Menaka, Rambha, Ghritachi, and Tilottama, as well as Spring, the cuckoo, Kama, and the excellent southern breeze —

Verse 12 (skanda.5.305.12)

gatvā tatra mahādevaṁ tapaścaraṇatatparam | kṣobhayadhvaṁ yathānyāyaṁ gaṅgāsāgaravāsinam ||

"Go there to Mahadeva, intent upon his austerity, dwelling at the confluence of the Ganga and the sea, and duly disturb him."

Verse 13 (skanda.5.305.13)

evamuktāstu te sarve devarājena bhārata | devāpsaraḥsamopetā jagmuste harasannidhau ||

O descendant of Bharata, thus commanded by the king of the gods, all of them, accompanied by gods and Apsaras, went into Hara's presence.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.305.14)

vasantamāse kusumākarākule mayūradātyūhasukokilākule | pranṛtya devāpsaragītasaṁkule pravāti vāte yamanairṛtākule ||

In the season of spring, amid a wealth of blossoms, alive with the calls of peacocks, cuckoos, and the datyuha bird, filled with the dance and song of gods and Apsaras, with the breeze blowing from the southwest —

Verse 15 (skanda.5.305.15)

tena saṁmūrchitāḥ sarve saṁsargācca khagottamāḥ | madhumādhavagandhena sakinnaramahoragāḥ ||

By contact with all this, and by the fragrance of the spring months, all the finest birds, along with the Kinnaras and great serpents, fell into a swoon.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.305.16)

yāvadālokate tāvattadvanaṁ vyākulīkṛtam | vīkṣate madanāviṣṭaṁ daśāvasthāgataṁ janam ||

As far as the eye could see, that forest was thrown into turmoil; people, overwhelmed by passion, were seen to pass through the ten stages of love.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.305.17)

devadevo'pi devānāmavasthātritayaṁ gataḥ | sāttvikīṁ rājasīṁ rājaṁstāmasīṁ tāṁ śṛṇuṣva me ||

Even the god of gods passed through those three states — the sattvic, the rajasic, and the tamasic; O king, hear this from me.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.305.18)

ekaṁ yogasamādhinā mukulitaṁ cakṣurdvitīyaṁ punaḥ pārvatyā jaghanasthalastanataṭe śṛṅgārabhārālasam | anyaddūranirastacāpamadanakrodhānaloddīpitaṁ śambhorbhinnarasaṁ samādhisamaye netratrayaṁ pātu vaḥ ||

One eye was closed in the trance of yoga; the second, gazing again upon Parvati's hips and the slope of her breasts, was languid with the weight of passion; the third blazed with the fire of wrath against Kama, whose bow had just been flung far away — may Shambhu's three eyes, each carrying a different mood in that moment of trance, protect you.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.305.19)

evaṁ dṛṣṭaḥ sa devena saśaraḥ saśarāsanaḥ | bhasmībhūto gataḥ kāmo vināśaḥ sarvadehinām ||

Thus beheld by that god, Kama, together with his arrow and bow, was reduced to ashes and perished — bringing terror of destruction upon all embodied beings.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.305.20)

kāmaṁ dṛṣṭvā kṣayaṁ yātaṁ tatra devāpsarogaṇāḥ | bhītā yathāgataṁ sarve jagmuścaiva diśo daśa ||

Seeing Kama destroyed, the assembled gods and Apsaras there, terrified, fled in every direction, just as they had come.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.305.21)

kāmena rahitā lokāḥ sasurāsuramānavāḥ | brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ jagmurdevā indrapurogamāḥ ||

Bereft of Kama, all the worlds, with their gods, demons, and men, fell into distress; then the gods, led by Indra, went for refuge to Brahma.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.305.22)

sīdamānaṁ jagaddṛṣṭvā tamūcuḥ parameṣṭhinam | jānāsi tvaṁ jagaccheṣaṁ prabho maithunasambhavāt ||

Seeing the world sinking into sorrow, they said to the Supreme Grandsire: "O lord, you know that the world's continuation depends upon procreation."

Verse 23 (skanda.5.305.23)

prajāḥ sarvā viśuṣyanti kāmena rahitā vibho ||

"O mighty one, deprived of Kama, all creatures are withering away."

Verse 24 (skanda.5.305.24)

etacchrutvā vacasteṣāṁ devānāṁ prapitāmahaḥ | jagāma sahitastatra yatra devo maheśvaraḥ ||

Hearing the gods' words, the great-grandsire (Brahma) went together with them to where the god Maheshvara was seated.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.305.25)

atoṣayajjagannāthaṁ sarvabhūtamaheśvaram | stutibhistaṇḍakaiḥ stotrairvedavedāṅgasambhavaiḥ ||

He gratified the lord of the universe, the great god of all beings, with hymns, with Tandava chants, and with praises drawn from the Vedas and Vedangas.

Verse 26 (skanda.5.305.26)

tatastuṣṭo mahādevo devānāṁ parameśvaraḥ | uvāca madhurāṁ vāṇīṁ devānbrahmapurogamān ||

Then Mahadeva, the supreme lord of the gods, being pleased, spoke in a sweet voice to the gods, with Brahma at their head —

Verse 27 (skanda.5.305.27)

kiṁ kāryaṁ kaśca santāpaḥ kiṁ vāgamanakāraṇam | devatānāmṛṣīṇāṁ ca kathyatāṁ mama māciram ||

"What is the task, what is the distress, what is the reason for your coming? O gods and sages, tell me at once, without delay."

Verse 28 (skanda.5.305.28)

devā ūcuḥ| kāmanāśājjagannāśo bhavitāyaṁ carācare | trailokyaṁ tvaṁ punaḥ śambho utpādayitumarhasi ||

The gods said: Through the destruction of Kama, the ruin of this whole world of moving and unmoving things is imminent; O Shambhu, you alone are able to bring the three worlds into being again.

Verse 29 (skanda.5.305.29)

etacchrutvā vacasteṣāṁ vimṛśya parameśvaraḥ | cintayāmāsa kāmasya vigrahaṁ bhuvi durlabham ||

Hearing their words, the supreme Lord reflected, and turned his mind to providing Kama with a body — a thing hard to attain on earth.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.305.30)

ājagāma tataḥ śīghramanaṅgo hyaṅgatāṁ gataḥ | prāṇadaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ paśyatāṁ nṛpasattama ||

O best of kings, then the bodiless one, Kama, swiftly regained a body and came forth before the eyes of all, he who gives life to every being.

Verse 31 (skanda.5.305.31)

tataḥ śaṅkhaninādena bherīṇāṁ niḥsvanena ca | abhyanandaṁstato devaṁ surāsuramahoragāḥ ||

Then, with the blast of conches and the roar of kettledrums, the gods, demons, and great serpents welcomed that god.

Verse 32 (skanda.5.305.32)

namaste devadeveśa kṛtārthāḥ surasattamāḥ | visarjitāḥ punarjagmuryathāgatamarindama ||

"Homage to you, O lord of the gods of gods" — so saying, the foremost gods, their purpose accomplished, took their leave and, O vanquisher of foes, returned just as they had come.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.305.33)

gateṣu sarvadeveṣu kāmadevo'pi bhārata | tapaścacāra vipulaṁ narmadātaṭamāśritaḥ ||

O descendant of Bharata, when all the gods had departed, Kamadeva too, taking refuge on the bank of the Narmada, performed vast austerity.

Verse 34 (skanda.5.305.34)

tapojapakṛśībhūto divyaṁ varṣaśataṁ kila | mahābhūtairvighnakaraiḥ pīḍyamānaḥ samantataḥ ||

Emaciated by his austerity and recitation, for a full divine hundred years, though beset on every side by obstructing spirits,

Verse 35 (skanda.5.305.35)

ātmavighnavināśārthaṁ saṁsmṛtaḥ kuṇḍaleśvaraḥ | cakāra rakṣāṁ sarvatra śarapāte nṛpottama ||

he called to mind Kundaleshvara (Shiva) for the removal of his obstacles, O best of kings, and the god granted him protection everywhere even amid a rain of arrows.

Verse 36 (skanda.5.305.36)

tatastuṣṭo mahādevo dṛḍhabhaktyā varapradaḥ | vareṇa chandayāmāsa kāmaṁ kāmavināśanaḥ ||

Then Mahadeva, pleased by his firm devotion, the granter of boons, the destroyer of Kama, invited Kama to choose a boon.

Verse 37 (skanda.5.305.37)

jñātvā tuṣṭaṁ mahādevamuvāca jhaṣaketanaḥ | praṇataḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā devadevaṁ trilocanam ||

Knowing Mahadeva was pleased, the fish-bannered one, bowing and joining his palms, spoke to the three-eyed god of gods —

Verse 38 (skanda.5.305.38)

yadi tuṣṭo'si deveśa yadi deyo varo mama | atra tīrthe jagannātha sadā saṁnihito bhava ||

"O lord of gods, if you are pleased and if you would grant me a boon, then, O lord of the universe, remain ever present at this tirtha."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.305.39)

tatheti coktvā vacanaṁ devadevo maheśvaraḥ | jagāmākāśamāviśya stūyamāno'psarogaṇaiḥ ||

Saying "so be it," the god of gods, Maheshvara, entering the sky, praised by hosts of Apsaras, departed.

Verse 40 (skanda.5.305.40)

gate cādarśanaṁ deve kāmadevo jagadgurum | sthāpayāmāsa rājendra kusumeśvarasaṁjñitam ||

O foremost of kings, when the god had disappeared from sight, Kamadeva installed that teacher of the world there under the name Kusumeshvara.

Verse 41 (skanda.5.305.41)

tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ snātvā hyupavāsaparāyaṇaḥ | caitramāse caturdaśyāṁ madanasya dine'thavā ||

One who, at that tirtha, keeps a fast and bathes, on the fourteenth day of the month of Chaitra or on the day sacred to Madana (Kama),

Verse 42 (skanda.5.305.42)

prabhāte vimale prāpte snātvā pūjya divākaram | tilamiśreṇa toyena tarpayetpitṛdevatāḥ ||

at the pure dawn, having bathed, should worship the sun, and offer libations mixed with sesame to the ancestors and gods.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.305.43)

kṛtvā snānaṁ vidhānena pūjayitvā ca taṁ nṛpa | piṇḍanirvapaṇaṁ kuryāttasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu ||

O king, having duly bathed and worshipped that god, one should offer the rice-balls. Hear the merit of this.

Verse 44 (skanda.5.305.44)

sattrayājiphalaṁ yacca labhate dvādaśābdikam | piṇḍadānātphalaṁ tacca labhate nātra saṁśayaḥ ||

Whatever fruit is obtained by a twelve-year sattra sacrifice, that same fruit is obtained by offering the rice-balls there, without doubt.

Verse 45 (skanda.5.305.45)

aṅkullamūle yaḥ piṇḍaṁ pitḥnuddiśya dāpayet | tasya te dvādaśābdāni tṛptiṁ yānti pitāmahāḥ ||

Whoever offers a rice-ball at the root of the Ankulla tree in the name of his ancestors causes his forefathers to remain satisfied for twelve years.

Verse 46 (skanda.5.305.46)

kṛmikīṭapataṅgā ye tatra tīrthe yudhiṣṭhira | prāpnuvanti mṛtāḥ svargaṁ kiṁ punarye narā mṛtāḥ ||

O Yudhishthira, even worms, insects, and moths that die at that tirtha attain heaven — how much more, then, men who die there!

Verse 47 (skanda.5.305.47)

saṁnyāsaṁ kurute yo'tra jitakrodho jitendriyaḥ | kusumeśe naro bhaktyā sa gacchecchivamandiram ||

Whoever, at Kusumesha, having conquered anger and the senses, devotedly renounces his body, goes to the abode of Shiva.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.305.48)

tatra divyāpsarobhiśca devagandharvagāyanaiḥ | krīḍate sevyamānastu kalpakoṭiśataṁ nṛpa ||

O king, there he sports for a hundred crores of kalpas, attended by celestial Apsaras and by the singing Gandharvas of the gods.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.305.49)

pūrṇe caiva tataḥ kāla iha mānuṣyatāṁ gataḥ | jāyate rājarājendraiḥ pūjyamāno nṛpo mahān ||

When that span of time is complete, being born again into this world of men, he becomes a great king, honoured even by kings among kings.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.305.50)

surūpaḥ subhago vāgmī vikrānto matimāñchuciḥ | jīvedvarṣaśataṁ sāgraṁ sarvavyādhivivarjitaḥ ||

Handsome, fortunate, eloquent, valiant, intelligent, and pure, he lives for more than a hundred years, free of every ailment.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.305.51)

etatpuṇyaṁ pāpaharaṁ tīrthakoṭiśatādhikam | kusumeśeti vikhyātaṁ sarvadevanamaskṛtam ||

This tirtha, known as Kusumesha, bowed to by all the gods, is more meritorious and more sin-destroying than a hundred crore other tirthas.
