The Greatness of Kalakaleshvara Tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.5.309.1)
narmadādakṣiṇe kūle tīrthaṁ kalakaleśvaram| vikhyātaṁ sarvalokeṣu svayaṁ devena nirmitam||
On the southern bank of the Narmada is the tirtha named Kalakaleshvara, renowned throughout all the worlds, created by the God himself.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.309.2)
andhakaṁ samare hatvā devadevo maheśvaraḥ| sahito devagandharvaiḥ kinnaraiśca mahoragaiḥ||
Having slain Andhaka in battle, Maheshvara, the god of gods, accompanied by gods, gandharvas, kinnaras, and great serpents -
Verse 3 (skanda.5.309.3)
śaṅkhatūryaninādaiśca mṛdaṅgapaṇavādibhiḥ| vīṇāveṇuravaiścānyaiḥ stutibhiḥ puṣkalādibhiḥ||
- amid the blare of conches and trumpets, the sound of mridangas and panavas, the strains of vinas and flutes, and various other hymns,
Verse 4 (skanda.5.309.4)
gāyanti sāmāni yajūṁṣi cānye chandāṁsi cānye ṛcamudgiranti| stotrairanekairapare gṛṇanti maheśvaraṁ tatra mahānubhāvāḥ||
There, great beings extolled Maheshvara - some singing the Sama chants, others the Yajus, others the metres, others chanting the Rig verses, while still others praised him with many hymns.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.309.5)
pramathānāṁ ninādena kalkalena ca bandinām| yasmātpratiṣṭhitaṁ liṅgaṁ tasmājjātaṁ tadākhyayā||
Because of the roar (kalakala) of the Pramathas and the clamour of the bards, where the Linga was established there arose from that very sound its name.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.309.6)
tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ snātvā vīkṣetkalakaleśvaram| vājapeyātparaṁ puṇyaṁ sa labhenmānavo bhuvi||
Whoever bathes in that tirtha and beholds Kalakaleshvara obtains on earth merit greater than that of the Vajapeya sacrifice.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.309.7)
tena puṇyena pūtātmā prāṇatyāgāddivaṁ vrajet| ārūḍhaḥ paramaṁ yānaṁ gīyamāno'psarogaṇaiḥ||
Purified in spirit by that merit, upon relinquishing life he goes to heaven, mounted upon a supreme celestial vehicle, praised in song by hosts of apsarases.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.309.8)
upabhujya mahābhogānkālena mahatā tataḥ| martyaloke mahātmāsau jāyate vimale kule||
After enjoying great pleasures there for a very long time, that great soul is then born in the mortal world into a spotless family.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.309.9)
brāhmaṇaḥ subhago loke vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ| vyādhiśokavinirmukto jīvecca śaradāṁ śatam||
He becomes a fortunate brahmin in the world, accomplished in the Vedas and Vedangas, and, freed from disease and sorrow, lives for a hundred autumns.
