The Greatness of Hunkara-svami Tirtha

Chapter 311All chaptersChapter 313

Verse 1 (skanda.5.312.1)

tasyaivānantaraṁ rājañchuklatīrthasamīpataḥ| vāsudevasya tīrthaṁ tu sarvalokeṣu pūjitam||

Shri Markandeya said: O king, immediately after that, close to Shukla-tirtha, is the tirtha of Vasudeva, worshipped throughout all the worlds.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.312.2)

taddhi puṇyaṁ suvikhyātaṁ narmadāyāṁ purātanam| yatra huṅkāramātreṇa revā krośaṁ jagāma sā||

That most ancient and celebrated, meritorious tirtha is on the Narmada, where, merely by a roar (hunkara), the Reva withdrew a full krosha.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.312.3)

yadā prabhṛti rājendra huṅkāreṇa gatā sarit| tadāprabhṛti sa svāmī huṅkāraḥ śabdito budhaiḥ||

O lord of kings, ever since the river receded because of that roar, that lord has been called "Hunkara" by the wise.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.312.4)

huṅkāratīrthe yaḥ snātvā paśyatyavyayamacyutam| sa mucyate naraḥ pāpaiḥ saptajanma kṛtairapi||

He who, having bathed at Hunkara-tirtha, beholds the imperishable Achyuta, that man is freed even from sins committed over seven births.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.312.5)

saṁsārārṇavamagnānāṁ narāṇāṁ pāpakarmiṇām| naivoddhartā jagannāthaṁ vinā nārāyaṇaṁ paraḥ||

For men of sinful deeds drowning in the ocean of transmigratory existence, there is no other saviour apart from the supreme Narayana, lord of the world.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.312.6)

sā jihvā yā hariṁ stauti taccittaṁ yattadarpitam| tāveva kevalau ślāghyau yau tatpūjākarau karau||

That tongue alone is praiseworthy which extols Hari; that mind alone is praiseworthy which is dedicated to him; and those two hands alone are praiseworthy which perform his worship.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.312.7)

sarvadā sarvakāryeṣu nāsti teṣāmamaṅgalam| yeṣāṁ hṛdistho bhagavānmaṅgalāyatano hariḥ||

For those in whose hearts dwells the Lord Hari, the abode of all auspiciousness, there is never, in any undertaking, anything inauspicious.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.312.8)

yadanyaddevatārcāyāḥ phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ| sāṣṭāṅgapraṇipātena tatphalaṁ labhate hareḥ||

Whatever fruit a man obtains from worshipping other deities, that same fruit is obtained merely by a full prostration before Hari.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.312.9)

reṇuguṇṭhitagātrasya yāvanto'sya rajaḥkaṇāḥ| tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi viṣṇuloke mahīyate||

As many particles of dust as cling to the body of one who prostrates himself, for that many thousands of years he is honoured in Vishnu's realm.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.312.10)

sammārjanābhyukṣaṇalepanena tadālaye naśyati sarvapāpam| nārī narāṇāṁ parayā tu bhaktyā dṛṣṭvā tu revāṁ narasattamasya||

By sweeping, sprinkling, and plastering his temple, all sin is destroyed. Whether woman or man, having beheld, with supreme devotion, the Reva that belongs to the best of men,

Verse 11 (skanda.5.312.11)

yenārcito bhagavānvāsudevo janmārjitaṁ naśyati tasya pāpam| sa yāti lokaṁ garuḍadhvajasya vidhūtapāpaḥ surasaṅghapūjyatām||

- by whom the Lord Vasudeva is worshipped, his sin accumulated over births is destroyed. Purged of sin, he goes to the realm of the Garuda-bannered one, and attains worthiness of worship by the hosts of gods.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.312.12)

śāṭhyenāpi namaskāraṁ prayuñjaṁścakrapāṇinaḥ| saptajanmārjitaṁ pāpaṁ gacchatyāśu na saṁśayaḥ||

Even a man who offers salutation to Chakrapani (Vishnu) out of mere pretence quickly loses the sin accumulated over seven births - of this there is no doubt.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.312.13)

pūjāyāṁ prīyate rudro japahomairdivākaraḥ| śaṅkhacakragadāpāṇiḥ praṇipātena tuṣyati||

Rudra is pleased by worship, the Sun by recitation and oblations; but the wielder of conch, discus, and mace is satisfied by mere prostration.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.312.14)

bhavajaladhigatānāṁ dvandvavātāhatānāṁ sutaduhitṛkalatratrāṇabhārārditānām| viṣamaviṣayatoye majjatāmaplavānāṁ bhavati śaraṇameko viṣṇupoto narāṇām||

For men caught in the ocean of worldly existence, buffeted by the winds of the pairs of opposites, oppressed by the burden of protecting sons, daughters, and wives, sinking, without a boat, in the perilous waters of sense-objects - the one refuge is the vessel that is Vishnu.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.312.15)

huṅkāratīrthe rājendra śubhaṁ vā yadi vāśubham| yatkṛtaṁ puruṣavyāghra tannaśyati na karhicit||

O lord of kings, tiger among men, whatever - be it modest or grand - is done at Hunkara-tirtha, its fruit is never lost.
