Avanti Khanda · Chapter 315
The Greatness of Moksha Tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.5.315.1)
tato gacchetpāṇḍuputra mokṣatīrthamanuttamam| sevitaṁ devagandharvairmunibhiśca tapodhanaiḥ||
Shri Markandeya said: O son of Pandu, thereafter one should go to the unsurpassed Moksha-tirtha, frequented by gods, gandharvas, and sages rich in austerity.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.315.2)
bahavastanna jānanti viṣṇumāyāvimohitāḥ| yatra siddhā mahābhāgā ṛṣayaḥ satapodhanāḥ||
Many, deluded by Vishnu's illusion, do not know of it - the place where illustrious sages, rich in austerity, attained perfection.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.315.3)
pulastyaḥ pulaho vidvānkratuścaiva mahāmatiḥ| prācetaso vasiṣṭhaśca dakṣo nārada eva ca||
Pulastya, the learned Pulaha, the great-minded Kratu, the son of Prachetas, Vasishtha, Daksha, and Narada -
Verse 4 (skanda.5.315.4)
ete cānye mahābhāgāḥ saptasāhasrasaṁjñitāḥ| mokṣaṁ gatāḥ saha sutaistattīrthaṁ tena mokṣadam||
- these and seven thousand other illustrious sages, together with their sons, attained liberation there; therefore that tirtha bestows liberation.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.315.5)
tatra pravāhamadhye tu patitā tamahā nadī| tatra tatsaṅgamaṁ tīrthaṁ sarvapāpakṣayaṁkaram||
There, in the midst of the current, the river Tamaha falls in; that confluence-tirtha destroys all sin.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.315.6)
ṛgyajuḥsāmasaṁjñānāmabhyastānāṁ tu yatphalam| samyagjaptvā tu vidhinā gāyatrīṁ tatra tallabhet||
Whatever fruit is obtained by studying the Rig, Yajus, and Sama Vedas - that same fruit is obtained there by duly and properly reciting the Gayatri.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.315.7)
tatra dattaṁ hutaṁ japtaṁ tīrthasevārjitaṁ phalam| sarvamakṣayatāṁ yāti mokṣasādhanamuttamam||
Whatever is given, offered in oblation, or recited there, and the fruit earned by service at the tirtha - all of it becomes imperishable, and is the supreme means to liberation.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.315.8)
tatra tīrthe mṛtānāṁ tu saṁnyāsena dvijanmanām| anivartikā gatisteṣāṁ mokṣatīrthaprabhāvataḥ||
For twice-born ones who die at that tirtha having taken sannyasa, their fate, through the power of Moksha-tirtha, is a non-returning one.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.315.9)
eṣa te vidhiruddiṣṭaḥ saṁkṣepeṇa mayānagha| vyuṣṭistīrthasya mahatī purāṇe yābhidhīyate||
O sinless one, this rite I have declared to you in brief - such is the great glory of this tirtha as it is described in the Purana.
