Avanti Khanda · Chapter 342
The Glory of Kalagnirudra Tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.5.342.1)
śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| jāleśvaraṁ tato gacchelliṅgamādyaṁ svayambhuvaḥ | kālāgnirudraṁ vikhyātaṁ bhṛgukacche vyavasthitam || 1 ||
Sri Markandeya said: Thereafter one should go to Jaleshvara, the primal, self-manifested linga, renowned as Kalagnirudra, established at Bhrigukachchha.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.342.2)
sarvapāpapraśamanaṁ sarvopadravanāśanam | kṣetrapāpavināśāya kṛpayā ca samutthitam || 2 ||
Pacifier of all sin, destroyer of all calamities, it arose out of compassion, for the destruction of the sin that had befallen this field.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.342.3)
purā kalpe'suragaṇairākrānte bhuvanatraye | vedoktakarmanāśe ca dharme ca vilayaṁ gate || 3 ||
Long ago, in a certain kalpa, when the three worlds were overrun by hosts of demons, when Vedic rites had been destroyed, and when dharma had fallen into ruin —
Verse 4 (skanda.5.342.4)
devarṣimunisiddheṣu viśvāsaparameṣu ca | kālāgnirudrādutpanno dhūmaḥ kālodbhavodbhavaḥ || 4 ||
— while the gods, sages, munis and siddhas were placing their utmost trust in Shiva, from Kalagnirudra arose a smoke, itself born of the fire of time.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.342.5)
dhūmātsamutthitaṁ liṅgaṁ bhittvā pātālasaptakam | avaṭaṁ dakṣiṇe kṛtvā liṅgaṁ tatraiva tiṣṭhati || 5 ||
From that smoke arose a linga, which pierced through the seven Patalas; making a pit on the southern side, the linga remains established there.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.342.6)
tatra tīrthe nṛpaśreṣṭha kuṇḍaṁ jvālāsamudbhavam | yatra sā patitā jvālā śivasya dahataḥ puram || 6 ||
O best of kings, at that tirtha there is a kunda born of flame, where that very flame fell, when Shiva was burning the triple city of the demons.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.342.7)
tatrāvaṭaṁ samudbhūtaṁ dhūmāvartastato'bhavat | tasminkuṇḍe tu yaḥ snānaṁ kṛtvā vai narmadājale || 7 ||
There a pit arose, and from it came forth a whirl of smoke. Whoever bathes in that kunda, in the waters of the Narmada —
Verse 8 (skanda.5.342.8)
kuryācchrāddhaṁ pitṛbhyo vai pūjayecca trilocanam | kālāgnirudranāmāni sa gacchetparamāṁ gatim || 8 ||
— performs shraddha for the ancestors, and worships the three-eyed one under his names as Kalagnirudra, attains the supreme state.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.342.9)
yatkiṁcitkāmikaṁ karma hyābhicārikamiva vā | ripusaṅkṣayakṛdvāpi sāntānikamathāpi vā | atra tīrthe kṛtaṁ sarvamacirātsidhyate nṛpa || 9 ||
O king, whatever rite for the fulfillment of desire, or for magical purposes, or for the destruction of enemies, or for progeny — whatever is performed at this tirtha quickly succeeds.
