Avanti Khanda · Chapter 344
The Glory of Udirna Varaha Tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.5.344.1)
śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchettu rājendra tīrthaṁ paramaśobhanam| udīrṇo yatra vārāho hyabhavaddharaṇīdharaḥ
Shri Markandeya said: O Rajendra, thereafter one should go to that most beautiful tirtha where the earth-bearing Varaha rose up and appeared.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.344.2)
dhanvadaṁṣṭrāṁ karālāgrāṁ bibhracca pṛthivīmimām| sa eva pañcamaḥ prokto vārāho muktidāyakaḥ
Bearing this earth upon his bow-curved, fearsomely tipped tusk, he indeed is proclaimed as the fifth Varaha, the bestower of liberation.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.344.3)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca| kathamudīrṇarūpo'bhūdvārāho dharaṇīdharaḥ| vārāhatvaṁ gataḥ kena pañcamaḥ kena saṁjñitaḥ
Yudhishthira said: How did the earth-bearing Varaha come to have this risen-up form? For what reason did he take the boar's form, and why is he called the fifth?
Verse 4 (skanda.5.344.4)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| ādikalpe purā rājankṣīrode bhagavān hariḥ| śete sa bhogiśayane yoganidrāvimohitaḥ
Markandeya said: O king, in the primal kalpa, long ago, Lord Hari lay in the Ocean of Milk upon the serpent-couch, absorbed in yogic slumber.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.344.5)
babhūva nṛpatiśreṣṭha gatvā vai devasannidhau| avocadbhārakhinnāhaṁ gamiṣyāmi rasātalam
O best of kings, the Earth, going into the presence of the gods, spoke thus: 'Oppressed by this burden, I shall sink down into Rasatala, the nether world.'
Verse 6 (skanda.5.344.6)
dṛṣṭvā devāḥ samudvignā gatā yatra janārdanaḥ| tuṣṭuvurvāgbhiriṣṭābhiḥ keśavaṁ jagatpatim
Seeing this, the gods, greatly troubled, went to where Janardana was, and praised Keshava, lord of the world, with pleasing words.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.344.7)
devā ūcuḥ| namo namaste deveśa surārtihara sarvaga| viśvamūrte namastubhyaṁ trāhi sarvānmahadbhayāt
The gods said: Salutations again and again to you, O lord of gods, remover of the gods' distress, who pervade all things. Salutations to you, O cosmic form — save us all from this great fear.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.344.8)
ityukto daivatairdevo hyuvāca kimupasthitam| kāryaṁ vadadhvaṁ me devā yatkṛtyaṁ mā ciraṁ kṛthāḥ
Thus addressed by the gods, the Lord said: What trouble has arisen? Tell me, O gods, what needs to be done, and do not delay in what must be done.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.344.9)
devā ūcuḥ| dharā dharitrī bhūtānāṁ bhārodvignā nimajjati| tāmuddhara hṛṣīkeśa lokānsaṁsthāpaya sthitau
The gods said: The earth, bearer of all beings, oppressed by their weight, is sinking down. O Hrishikesha, lift her up and re-establish the worlds in their proper order.
Verse 10 (skanda.5.344.10)
evamuktaḥ suraiḥ sarvaiḥ keśavaḥ parameśvaraḥ| vārāhaṁ rūpamāsthāya sarvayajñamayaṁ vibhuḥ
Thus addressed by all the gods, the Supreme Lord Keshava, the all-pervading one, assumed the boar form, which is of the very nature of all sacrifice.
Verse 11 (skanda.5.344.11)
daṁṣṭrākarālaṁ piṅgākṣaṁ samākuñcitamūrdhajam| kṛtvā'nantaṁ pādapīṭhaṁ daṁṣṭrāgreṇoddharanbhuvam
With his fearsome tusks, tawny eyes, and curled mane, making Ananta the serpent his footstool, he lifted up the earth upon the tip of his tusk.
Verse 12 (skanda.5.344.12)
saparvatavanāmurvīṁ samudraparimekhalām| uddhṛtya bhagavān viṣṇurudīrṇaḥ samajāyata
Having raised up the earth, adorned with mountains and forests, girded by the ocean as by a waist-band, Lord Vishnu rose up, manifest.
Verse 13 (skanda.5.344.13)
darśayanpañcadhātmānamuttare narmadātaṭe| tathādyaṁ koralāyāṁ tu dvitīyaṁ yodhanīpure
He manifested himself in five forms on the northern bank of the Narmada — the first, original form at Korala, and the second at Yodhanipura.
Verse 14 (skanda.5.344.14)
jayakṣetrābhidhāne tu jayeti parikīrtitam| asurānmohayalliṅgastṛtīyaḥ parikīrtitaḥ
In the place called Jayakshetra, it was proclaimed under the name Jaya — the third, a linga-form, renowned for bewildering the demons.
Verse 15 (skanda.5.344.15)
pāvanāya jagaddhetoḥ sthito yasmācchaśiprabhaḥ| atastu nṛpaśārdūla śveta ityābhidhīyate
Established for the purification of the world, moon-bright in radiance — therefore, O tiger among kings, it is called Shveta, the White.
Verse 16 (skanda.5.344.16)
uddhṛtya jagatāṁ devīmudīrṇo bhṛgukacchake| tataḥ pañcama udīrṇo varāha iti saṁjñitaḥ
Having lifted up the goddess of the worlds, the earth, he rose up at Bhrigukaccha — hence this fifth form is called the Risen Varaha, Udirna Varaha.
Verse 17 (skanda.5.344.17)
iti pañcavarāhāste kathitaḥ pāṇḍunandana| yugapaddarśanaṁ caiṣāṁ brahmahatyāṁ vyapohati
Thus, O son of Pandu, these five Varahas have been described; beholding all of them together removes even the sin of killing a brahmin.
Verse 18 (skanda.5.344.18)
jyeṣṭhe māsi site pakṣa ekādaśyāṁ viśeṣataḥ| gatvā hyādivarāhaṁ tu samprāpte daśamīdine
Especially on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha, having gone to the Adi Varaha upon the arrival of the tenth day, Dashami.
Verse 19 (skanda.5.344.19)
haviṣyamannaṁ bhuñjīyāllaghusāyaṁ gate ravau| rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kuryādvārāhe hyādisaṁjñake
At sunset one should eat a light meal of oblational food, and keep a night vigil at the shrine of the Varaha called Adi, the Original.
Verse 20 (skanda.5.344.20)
tataḥ prabhāte hyuṣasi saṁsnātvā narmadājale| saṁtarpya pitṛdevāṁśca tilairyavavimiśritaiḥ
Then at dawn, having bathed well in the waters of the Narmada, one should offer libations to the ancestors and gods with water mixed with sesame and barley.
Verse 21 (skanda.5.344.21)
dhenuṁ dadyāddvije yogye sarvābharaṇabhūṣitām| nirmamo nirahaṅkāro dānaṁ dadyāddvijātaye
One should give a cow adorned with every ornament to a worthy brahmin, and, free from attachment and pride, give further gifts to the twice-born.
Verse 22 (skanda.5.344.22)
gatvā sampūjayeddevaṁ vārāhaṁ hyādisaṁjñitam| anena vidhinā pūjya paścādgacchejjayaṁ tvaran
One should go and duly worship the deity Varaha known as Adi; having worshipped in this manner, one should then hasten on to Jaya.
Verse 23 (skanda.5.344.23)
tvaritaṁ tu jayaṁ gatvā pūrvakaṁ vidhimācaret| aśvaṁ dadyāddvijāgryāya jayapūrvābhinirgatam
Having quickly gone to Jaya, one should perform the same rite as before, and give a horse to a foremost brahmin, setting out from Jaya.
Verse 24 (skanda.5.344.24)
liṅge caiva tilā deyāḥ śvete hiraṇyameva ca| udīrṇe ca bhuvaṁ dadyātpūrvakaṁ vidhimācaret
At the Linga shrine sesame should be given as a gift, at Shveta gold, and at Udirna land — one should perform the same rite as before at each.
Verse 25 (skanda.5.344.25)
anastamita āditye varāhānpañca paśyataḥ| yatphalaṁ labhate pārtha tadihaikamanāḥ śṛṇu
O Partha, hear with a focused mind what fruit is obtained by one who beholds all five Varahas before sunset.
Verse 26 (skanda.5.344.26)
brahmahatyā surāpānaṁ steyaṁ gurvaṅganāgamaḥ| ebhistu saha saṁyogo viśvastānāṁ ca vañcanam
The killing of a brahmin, drinking liquor, theft, violating the guru's wife, association with those guilty of such acts, and the betrayal of those who trust one —
Verse 27 (skanda.5.344.27)
svasṛduhitṛbhaginīkuladāropabṛṁhaṇam| ā janmamaraṇādyāvatpāpaṁ bharatasattama
Union with one's own sister, daughter, or a woman of the family — O best of the Bharatas, whatever such sin has accumulated from birth until death —
Verse 28 (skanda.5.344.28)
tīrthapañcakapūtasya vaiṣṇavasya viśeṣataḥ| yugapaccavinaśyeta tūlarāśirivānalāt
All such sin, in the case of a devotee of Vishnu purified by these five tirthas, is destroyed all at once, like a heap of cotton cast into fire.
Verse 29 (skanda.5.344.29)
nārāyaṇānusmaraṇājjapadhyānādviśeṣataḥ| vipraṇaśyanti pāpāni girikūṭasamānyapi
By the remembrance of Narayana, and especially by japa and meditation, sins as vast as mountain-peaks are utterly destroyed.
Verse 30 (skanda.5.344.30)
dṛṣṭvā pañca varāhānvai pauruṣe mahati sthitaḥ| āplavannarmadātoye śrāddhaṁ kṛtvā yathāvidhi
Having beheld the five Varahas, established in great resolve, having bathed in the waters of the Narmada, and having performed the shraddha rite according to rule —
Verse 31 (skanda.5.344.31)
udayāstamanādarvāg yaḥ paśyelloṭaṇeśvaram| kalevaravimuktaḥ sa ityevaṁ śaṅkaro'bravīt
He who, within the span from sunrise to sunset, beholds Lotaneshvara is freed from the bondage of the body — thus spoke Shankara himself.
Verse 32 (skanda.5.344.32)
muktiṁ prayāti sahasā duṣprāpāṁ parameśvarīm| pauruṣe kriyamāṇe'pi na siddhirjāyate yadi
He suddenly attains that supreme liberation, so hard to reach — even when, elsewhere, such attainment does not come despite great effort.
Verse 33 (skanda.5.344.33)
bruvanti svargagamanamapi pāpānvitasya ca| yatra tatra gatasyaiva bhavetpañcavarāhakī
They say that even one burdened with sin attains passage to heaven, wherever he may have come from, if only he has had the sight of the five Varahas.
Verse 34 (skanda.5.344.34)
jyeṣṭhasyaikādaśītithau dhruvaṁ tatra vasennaraḥ| ādiṁ jayaṁ tathā śvetaṁ liṅgamudīrṇameva ca
On the eleventh day of Jyeshtha, one should firmly dwell right there — taking refuge in Adi, Jaya, Shveta, Linga, and Udirna.
Verse 35 (skanda.5.344.35)
āśritya tasyā draṣṭavyā varāhāstu yatastataḥ| jyeṣṭhasyaikādaśītithau viṣṇunā prabhuviṣṇunā
Taking refuge in them, one should behold the Varahas from wherever one may — for it was on the eleventh day of Jyeshtha that the Lord Vishnu—
Verse 36 (skanda.5.344.36)
vārāhaṁ rūpamāsthāya uddhṛtā dharaṇī vibho| puṇyātpuṇyatamā tena hyaśeṣāghaughanāśinī
O lord, assuming the form of the boar, he lifted up the earth; therefore this day is the most sacred of sacred days, destroying the entire mass of sin.
Verse 37 (skanda.5.344.37)
dṛṣṭvā pañcavarāhānvai kroḍamudīrṇarūpiṇam| pūjayitvā vidhānena paścājjāgaraṇaṁ caret
Having beheld the five Varahas — the boar-formed one in his risen manifestation — and having worshipped him according to rule, one should then keep the night vigil.
Verse 38 (skanda.5.344.38)
sapañcavartikān dīpān ghṛtenojjvālya bhaktitaḥ| purāṇaśravaṇairnṛtyairgītavādyaiḥ sumaṅgalaiḥ
Kindling five-wicked lamps with ghee, with devotion, and with the auspicious accompaniments of hearing the Puranas, dance, song, and music—
Verse 39 (skanda.5.344.39)
vedajāpyaiḥ pavitraiśca kṣapayitvā ca śarvarīm| yatpuṇyaṁ labhate martyo hyājamīḍha śṛṇuṣva tat
And spending the night in the sacred recitation of Vedic mantras — hear, O Ajamidha, what merit the mortal thereby obtains.
Verse 40 (skanda.5.344.40)
revājalaṁ puṇyatamaṁ pṛthivyāṁ tathā ca devo jagatāṁ patirhariḥ| ekādaśī pāpaharā narendra bahvāyāsairlabhyate mānavānām
The water of the Reva is the most sacred on earth, and there too dwells Hari, lord of the worlds; O king of men, the sin-removing Ekadashi is obtained by men only through great effort.
Verse 41 (skanda.5.344.41)
ekaikaśo brahmahatyādikāni śaktāni hantuṁ pāpasaṅghāni rājan| naite sarve yugapadvai sametā hantuṁ śaktāḥ kiṁ na tadbrūhi rājan
O king, these means, each one alone, are able to destroy the multitude of sins beginning with brahmin-murder — are not all of them, then, united together at once, surely able to destroy it? Tell me, O king, is this not so?
Verse 42 (skanda.5.344.42)
yathedamuktaṁ tava dharmasūno śrutaṁ ca yacchaṅkarācchandramauleḥ| śrutvedamicchanmucyate sarvapāpaiḥ paṭhanpadaṁ yāti hi vṛtraśatroḥ
O son of Dharma, as this has been told to you, just as I heard it from Shankara, the moon-crested one — hearing this, one who desires it is freed from all sins, and one who recites it attains the abode of Indra, foe of Vritra.
