The Glory of Shripati

Chapter 347All chaptersChapter 349

Verse 1 (skanda.5.348.1)

ityukte'psarasaḥ sarvāḥ praṇipatya punaḥ punaḥ| ūcurnārāyaṇaṁ devaṁ taddarśanasamīhayā

When this had been said, all the apsaras, bowing again and again, spoke to the god Narayana, longing for that vision.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.348.2)

vasantakāmāpsarasa ūcuḥ| bhagavanbhavatā yo'yamupadeśo hitārthinā| proktaḥ sa sarvo vijñāto māhātmyaṁ viditaṁ ca te

Vasanta, Kama, and the apsaras said: O Lord, the teaching you have given us, out of concern for our good, we have fully understood, and your greatness too has become known to us.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.348.3)

yattvetadbhavatā proktaṁ prasannenāntarātmanā| darśiteyaṁ viśālākṣī darśayiṣyāmi vo jagat

As you, with a gladdened inner self, have said — 'This large-eyed woman has been shown; I shall show you the whole universe as well' —

Verse 4 (skanda.5.348.4)

tatrārthe sarvabhāvena prapannānāṁ jagatpate| darśayātmānamakhilaṁ darśiteyaṁ yathorvaśī

O lord of the world, upon us who have wholly taken refuge for that very purpose, show us your entire self, just as this Urvashi was shown.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.348.5)

yadi devāparādhe'pi nāsmāsu kupitaṁ tava| namaste jagatāmīśa darśayātmānamātmanā

O god, if, despite our offense, you harbour no anger toward us, then, O lord of the world, salutations to you — show us your own self by your own self.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.348.6)

nārāyaṇa uvāca| paśyatehākhilāllokānmama dehe surāṅganāḥ| madhuṁ madanamātmānaṁ yaccānyaddraṣṭumicchatha

Narayana said: Behold, O celestial women, within my body all the worlds, Madhu, Madana, your own selves, and whatever else you wish to see.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.348.7)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| ityuktvā bhagavāndevastadā nārāyaṇo nṛpa| uccairjahāsa svanavattatrābhūdakhilaṁ jagat

Shri Markandeya said: O king, having spoken thus, the blessed Lord Narayana laughed aloud, and with that resounding laughter, the entire universe became manifest there.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.348.8)

brahmā prajāpatiḥ śakraḥ saha rudraiḥ pinākadhṛk| ādityā vasavaḥ sādhyā viśvedevā maharṣayaḥ

Brahma, Prajapati, Shakra, the Rudras together with the Pinaka-bearing Shiva, the Adityas, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Vishvedevas, and the great sages—

Verse 9 (skanda.5.348.9)

nāsatyadasrāvanilaḥ sarvaśaśca tathāgnayaḥ| yakṣagandharvasiddhāśca piśācoragakinnarāḥ

Nasatya and Dasra, the Wind, all the fires, yakshas, gandharvas, siddhas, pishachas, nagas, and kinnaras —

Verse 10 (skanda.5.348.10)

samastāpsaraso vidyāḥ sāṅgā vedāstaduktayaḥ| manuṣyāḥ paśavaḥ kīṭāḥ pakṣiṇaḥ pādapāstathā

All the apsaras, all knowledge, the Vedas with their limbs and their teachings, men, beasts, insects, birds, and trees —

Verse 11 (skanda.5.348.11)

sarīsṛpāścātha sūkṣmā yaccānyajjīvasaṁjñitam| samudrāḥ sakalāḥ śailāḥ saritaḥ kānanāni ca

Reptiles, minute creatures, and whatever else is called a living being, all the oceans, mountains, rivers, and forests—

Verse 12 (skanda.5.348.12)

dvīpānyaśeṣāṇi tathā tathā sarvasarāṁsi ca| nagaragrāmapūrṇā ca medinī medinīpate| devāṅganābhirdevasya dehe dṛṣṭaṁ mahātmanaḥ

All the islands, all the lakes, and this whole earth, full of cities and villages — O king, all this the celestial women beheld within the body of that great god.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.348.13)

nakṣatragrahatārābhiḥ susampūrṇaṁ nabhastalam| dadṛśustāḥ sucārvaṅgyastasyāntarviśvaṁ rūpiṇaḥ

The vault of the sky, filled with constellations, planets, and stars, those lovely-limbed women likewise beheld within him, the one whose form is the universe.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.348.14)

ūrdhvaṁ na tiryaṅnādhastādyadāntastasya dṛśyate| tamanantamanādiṁ ca tatastāstuṣṭuvuḥ prabhum

When no end to him could be seen — above, to the sides, or below — they then began to praise that boundless, beginningless Lord.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.348.15)

madanena samaṁ sarvā madhunā ca varāṅganāḥ| sasādhvasā bhaktiparāḥ paraṁ vismayamāgatāḥ

Together with Madana and Madhu, all those excellent women, awestruck and filled with devotion, were overcome with the deepest wonder.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.348.16)

vasantakāmāpsarasa ūcuḥ| paśyāma nādiṁ tava deva nāntaṁ na madhyamavyākṛtarūpapāram| parāyaṇaṁ tvāṁ jagatāmanantaṁ natāḥ sma nārāyaṇamātmabhūtam

Vasanta, Kama, and the apsaras said: O god, we see neither your beginning nor your end, nor your middle, nor any limit to your unmanifest form; we bow to you, O Narayana, the boundless refuge of all the worlds, who are the very Self of all.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.348.17)

mahīnabhovāyujalāgnayastvaṁ śabdādirūpastu parāparātman| tvatto bhavatyacyute sarvametadbhedādirūpo'si vibho tvamātman

You are earth, sky, air, water, and fire; O Self beyond and within all, you are the very form of sound and the other elements. From you, O unfailing one, all this comes into being; O all-pervading Self, you yourself assume this form of differentiation.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.348.18)

draṣṭāsi rūpasya parasya vettā śrotā ca śabdasya hare tvamekaḥ| sraṣṭā bhavān sarvagato'khilasya ghrātā ca gandhasya pṛthakśarīrī

You alone are the seer of form, the supreme knower, and you alone, O Hari, are the hearer of sound. You, all-pervading, are the creator of everything, and, taking on a separate body, you are also the smeller of fragrance.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.348.19)

sureṣu sarveṣu na so'sti kaścinmanuṣyalokeṣu na so'sti kaścit| paśvādivargeṣu na so'sti kaścidyo nāṁśabhūtastava devadeva

Among all the gods there is none, in the world of men there is none, among the classes of beasts and the rest there is none, O god of gods, who is not a portion of you.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.348.20)

brahmāmbudhīndupramukhāni saumya śakrādirūpāṇi tavottamāni| samudrarūpaṁ tava dhairyavatsu tejaḥ svarūpeṣu ravistathāgniḥ

O gentle one, Brahma, the ocean, the moon, and the foremost among these, as well as Indra and the rest, are your excellent forms. Among the steadfast, your form is the ocean; among the radiant, your true nature is the sun and fire.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.348.21)

kṣamādhaneṣu kṣitirūpamagryaṁ śīghro balavatsu vāyuḥ| manuṣyarūpaṁ tava rājaveṣo mūḍheṣu sarveśvara pādapo'si

Among the forbearing, your foremost form is the earth; among the strong, the swift-moving wind. Among men, your form is the garb of a king; and among the dull and inert, O lord of all, you are the tree.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.348.22)

sarvānayeṣvacyuta dānavastvaṁ sanatsajātaśca vivekavatsu| rasasvarūpeṇa jalasthito'si gandhasvarūpaṁ bhavato dharitryām

O unfailing one, among all the unjust you are the demon, and among the discerning, the sage Sanatsujata. In the form of taste, you dwell in water, and your form upon the earth is fragrance.

Verse 23 (skanda.5.348.23)

dṛśyasvarūpaśca hutāśanastvaṁ sparśasvarūpaṁ bhavataḥ samīre| śabdādikaṁ te nabhasi svarūpaṁ mantavyarūpo manasi prabho tvam

In fire, your nature is visible form; in the wind, your nature is touch; in space, your nature is sound and the rest; and in the mind, O lord, you are the very object worthy of contemplation.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.348.24)

bodhasvarūpaśca matau tvamekaḥ sarvatra sarveśvara sarvabhūta| paśyāmi te nābhisarojamadhye brahmāṇamīśaṁ ca haraṁ bhṛkuṭyām

In the intellect, you alone are the very nature of awareness, O lord of all, O all-being, present everywhere. I see Brahma in the midst of your navel-lotus, and Lord Hara upon your brow.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.348.25)

tavāśvinau karṇagatau samastāstavāsthitā bāhuṣu lokapālāḥ| ghrāṇo'nilo netragatau ravīndu jihvā ca te nātha sarasvatīyam

The two Ashvins dwell in your ears, and all the guardians of the worlds abide in your arms. The Wind is your sense of smell, the sun and moon are your eyes, and, O lord, this Sarasvati resides as your tongue.

Verse 26 (skanda.5.348.26)

pādau dharitrī jaṭharaṁ samastāllokān hṛṣīkeśa vilokayāmaḥ| jaṅghe vayaṁ pādatalāṅgulīṣu piśācayakṣoragasiddhasaṅghāḥ

Your feet are the earth, O Hrishikesha; within your belly we behold all the worlds. We ourselves dwell in your shins, and in the soles and toes of your feet are the hosts of pishachas, yakshas, nagas, and siddhas.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.348.27)

puṁstve prajānāṁ patiroṣṭhayugme pratiṣṭhitāste kratavaḥ samastāḥ| sarve vayaṁ te daśaneṣu deva daṁṣṭrāsu devā hyabhavaṁśca dantāḥ

Prajapati is established in your manhood; upon your two lips rest all the sacrifices. O god, all of us abide in your teeth, and the gods themselves have become your tusks and teeth.

Verse 28 (skanda.5.348.28)

romāṇyaśeṣāstava devasaṅghā vidyādharā nātha tavāṅghrirekhāḥ| sāṅgāḥ samastāstava deva vedāḥ samāsthitāḥ sandhiṣu bāhubhūtāḥ

All your body-hairs are the hosts of gods, O lord, and the vidyadharas are the lines upon your feet. O god, all the Vedas with their limbs abide in your joints, taking the very form of your arms.

Verse 29 (skanda.5.348.29)

varāhabhūtaṁ dharaṇīdharaste nṛsiṁharūpaṁ ca sadā karālam| paśyāma te vājiśirastathoccaistrivikrame yacca tadāpramemam

We behold your earth-bearing form as the Boar, and your ever-fearsome form as the Man-Lion. We see too your horse-headed form, and that immeasurable form you took at the striding of the three worlds, Trivikrama.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.348.30)

amī samudrāstava deva dehe maurvālayaḥ śailadharāstathāmī| imāśca gaṅgāpramukhāḥ sravantyo dvīpāṇyaśeṣāṇi vanādideśāḥ

O god, all these oceans dwell within your body, and likewise these mountain-bearing regions; these rivers headed by the Ganga, all the islands, and the forests and other lands as well.

Verse 31 (skanda.5.348.31)

stuvanti ceme munayastaveśa dehe sthitāstvanmahimānamagryam| tvāmīśitāraṁ jagatāmanantaṁ yajanti yajñaiḥ kila yajñino'mī

O lord, these sages, dwelling within your body, praise your supreme glory; and these sacrificers indeed worship you, the boundless ruler of the worlds, through their sacrifices.

Verse 32 (skanda.5.348.32)

tvattohi saumyaṁ jagatīha kiṁcittvatto na raudraṁ ca samastamūrte| tvatto na śītaṁ ca na keśavoṣṇaṁ sarvasvarūpātiśayī tvameva

O universal form, whatever in this world is gentle comes from you, and whatever is fierce is likewise not other than you. O Keshava, neither cold nor heat is apart from you; you alone transcend and surpass every form.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.348.33)

prasīda sarveśvara sarvabhūta sanātanātmaparameśvareśa| tvanmāyayā mohitamānasābhiryatte'parāddhaṁ tadidaṁ kṣamasva

Be gracious, O lord of all, O all-being, O eternal Self, O lord even of the supreme lords. Forgive whatever offense we, our minds deluded by your own maya, have committed against you.

Verse 34 (skanda.5.348.34)

kiṁ vāparāddhaṁ tava devadeva yanmāyayā no hṛdayaṁ tavāpi| māyābhiśaṅkipraṇatārtihantarmano hi no vihvalatāmupaiti

O god of gods, what offense of ours could there truly be, when even our heart is enveloped by your own maya? O remover of the suffering of the surrendered, it is only from the fear of that maya that our mind becomes distraught.

Verse 35 (skanda.5.348.35)

If any offense has indeed been committed against you, let it be forgiven as ours alone, we who have wandered from the right path. O god, creator of this universe, this offense belongs only to the sphere of one who begets discernment.

Verse 36 (skanda.5.348.36)

namo namaste govinda nārāyaṇa janārdana| tvannāmasmaraṇātpāpamaśeṣaṁ naḥ praṇaśyatu

Salutation, salutation again to you, O Govinda, Narayana, Janardana. By the remembrance of your name may all our sin be destroyed.

Verse 37 (skanda.5.348.37)

namo'nanta namastubhyaṁ viśvātmanviśvabhāvana| tvannāmasmaraṇātpāpamaśeṣaṁ naḥ praṇaśyatu

Salutation to you, O boundless one, O Self of the universe, O begetter of the universe. By the remembrance of your name may all our sin be destroyed.

Verse 38 (skanda.5.348.38)

vareṇya yajñapuruṣa prajāpālana vāmana| tvannāmasmaraṇātpāpamaśeṣaṁ naḥ praṇaśyatu

O most excellent one, O spirit of sacrifice, O protector of creatures, O Vamana. By the remembrance of your name may all our sin be destroyed.

Verse 39 (skanda.5.348.39)

namo'stu te'bjanābhāya prajāpatikṛte hara| tvannāmasmaraṇātpāpamaśeṣaṁ naḥ praṇaśyatu

Salutation to you, O lotus-naveled one, O maker of Prajapati, O remover of sin. By the remembrance of your name may all our sin be destroyed.

Verse 40 (skanda.5.348.40)

saṁsārārṇavapotāya namastubhyamadhokṣaja| tvannāmasmaraṇātpāpamaśeṣaṁ naḥ praṇaśyatu

Salutation to you, O Adhokshaja, the very vessel that ferries across the ocean of worldly existence. By the remembrance of your name may all our sin be destroyed.

Verse 41 (skanda.5.348.41)

namaḥ parasmai śrīśāya vāsudevāya vedhase| svecchayā guṇayuktāya sargasthityantakāriṇe

Salutation to the supreme lord of Shri, Vasudeva, the ordainer, who by his own will assumes the gunas and who brings about creation, preservation, and dissolution.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.348.42)

upasaṁhara viśvātmanrūpametatsanātanam| vardhamānaṁ na no draṣṭuṁ samarthaṁ cakṣurīśvara

O Self of the universe, withdraw this eternal form of yours; O lord, our eyes are not able to behold it as it continues to grow ever vaster.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.348.43)

pralayāgnisahasrasya samā dīptistavācyuta| pramāṇena diśo bhūmirgaganaṁ ca samāvṛtam

O unfailing one, your radiance is equal to a thousand fires of dissolution; by its sheer extent, all the directions, the earth, and the sky are entirely enveloped.

Verse 44 (skanda.5.348.44)

na vidmaḥ kutra vartāmo bhavānnāthopalakṣyate| sarvaṁ jagadekasthaṁ piṇḍitaṁ lakṣayāmahe

We no longer know where we stand; you alone, O lord, are perceived everywhere. We behold this entire universe gathered into a single, concentrated point.

Verse 45 (skanda.5.348.45)

O Hari, what can we say to describe your form? What can we say of its measure? O god, what can we say of your greatness, which lies utterly beyond the reach of speech?

Verse 46 (skanda.5.348.46)

vaktāro vāyutenāpi buddhīnāmayutāyutaiḥ| guṇanirvarṇanaṁ nātha kartuṁ tava na śakyate

O lord, even speakers endowed with tens of thousands upon tens of thousands of intellects are unable to give a full account of your attributes.

Verse 47 (skanda.5.348.47)

tadetaddarśitaṁ rūpaṁ prasādaḥ paramaḥ kṛtaḥ| chandato jagatāmīśa tadetadupasaṁhara

This form that has been shown to us is indeed the highest grace bestowed; O lord of the worlds, now, at your own will, withdraw it.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.348.48)

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| ityevaṁ saṁstutastābhirapsarobhirjanārdanaḥ| divyajñānopapannānāṁ tāsāṁ pratyakṣamīśvaraḥ

Markandeya said: Thus praised by those apsaras, Janardana, present in visible form directly before those women now endowed with divine knowledge —

Verse 49 (skanda.5.348.49)

viveśa sarvabhūtāni svairaṁśairbhūtabhāvanaḥ| taṁ dṛṣṭvā sarvabhūteṣu līyamānamadhokṣajam

the source of all beings entered into all creatures by his own portions. Beholding him, Adhokshaja, dissolving into all beings—

Verse 50 (skanda.5.348.50)

vismayaṁ paramaṁ cakruḥ samastā devayoṣitaḥ| sa ca sarveśvaraḥ śailānpādapānsāgarānbhuvam

all the celestial women were struck with the deepest wonder. And that lord of all entered into the mountains, the trees, the oceans, and the earth as well—

Verse 51 (skanda.5.348.51)

jalamagniṁ tathā vāyumākāśaṁ ca viveśa ha| kāle dikṣvatha sarvātma hyātmanaścānyathāpi ca

He entered into water, fire, air, and space; that all-souled one entered into time, into the directions, into his own self, and into other things besides.

Verse 52 (skanda.5.348.52)

ātmarūpasthitaṁ svena mahimnā bhāvayañjagat| devadānavarakṣāṁsi yakṣīvidyādharoragāḥ

manifesting the universe, through his own glory, as established in the very form of his own Self — gods, danavas, rakshasas, yakshas, vidyadharas, nagas —

Verse 53 (skanda.5.348.53)

manuṣyapaśukīṭādimṛgapaśvantarikṣagāḥ| ye'ntarikṣe tathā bhūmau divi ye ca jalāśrayāḥ

humans, beasts, insects, deer, creatures that move through the sky, and those that dwell in the atmosphere, on the earth, in the heavens, and in the waters —

Verse 54 (skanda.5.348.54)

tānviveśa sa viśvātmā punastadrūpamāsthitaḥ| nareṇa sārdhaṁ yattābhirdṛṣṭapūrvamarindama

into all of these the universal Self entered, and then resumed that very same form — together with Nara, the form which those apsaras had beheld before, O tamer of foes.

Verse 55 (skanda.5.348.55)

tāḥ paraṁ vismayaṁ jagmuḥ sarvāstridaśayoṣitaḥ| praṇemuḥ sādhvasātpāṇḍuvadanā nṛpasattama

All those celestial women were struck with the utmost wonder; O best of kings, their faces pale with awe, they bowed down.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.348.56)

nārāyaṇo'pi bhagavānāha tāstridaśāṅganāḥ

The blessed Narayana then spoke to those celestial women.

Verse 57 (skanda.5.348.57)

nārāyaṇa uvāca| nīyatāmurvaśī bhadrā yatrāsau tridaśeśvaraḥ| bhavatīnāṁ hitārthāya sarvabhūteṣvasāviti

Narayana said: Let the auspicious Urvashi be taken to where that lord of the gods dwells; it was for your own good that I revealed myself thus, present in all beings.

Verse 58 (skanda.5.348.58)

jñānamutpāditaṁ bhūyo layaṁ bhūteṣu kurvatā| tadgacchadhvaṁ samasto'yaṁ bhūtagrāmo madaṁśakaḥ

By dissolving myself once more into all beings, I have brought forth this knowledge anew. Now go your way; this entire multitude of creatures is but a portion of me.

Verse 59 (skanda.5.348.59)

ahamadyātmabhūtasya vāsudevasya yoginaḥ| asmātparataraṁ nāsti yo'nantaḥ paripathyate

I am today the very self of that Yogin Vasudeva, who has become the Self of all — beyond whom there is nothing, he who is known as the infinite.

Verse 60 (skanda.5.348.60)

tamajaṁ sarvabhūteśaṁ jānīta paramaṁ padam| ahaṁ bhavatyo devāśca manuṣyāḥ paśavaśca ye| etatsarvamanantasya vāsudevasya vai kṛtam

Know that unborn lord of all beings as the supreme state. I, you, the gods, men, and whatever beasts there are — all this is indeed the work of that infinite Vasudeva.

Verse 61 (skanda.5.348.61)

evaṁ jñātvā samaṁ sarvaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam| sapaśvādiguṇaṁ caiva draṣṭavyaṁ tridaśāṅganāḥ

Knowing this, O celestial women, the entire universe — gods, demons, men, and beasts together with all their qualities — should be viewed with equanimity.

Verse 62 (skanda.5.348.62)

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| ityuktāstena devena samastāstāḥ surastriyaḥ| praṇamya tau samadanāḥ savasantāśca pārthiva

Markandeya said: O king, thus addressed by that god, all those celestial women, together with Kama and Vasanta, bowed down to the two sages.

Verse 63 (skanda.5.348.63)

ādāya corvaśīṁ bhūyo devarājamupāgatāḥ| ācakhyuśca yathāvṛttaṁ devarājāya tattathā

taking Urvashi with them, returned once more to the king of the gods, and related to him, exactly as it had occurred, all that had taken place.

Verse 64 (skanda.5.348.64)

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tathā tvamapi rājendra sarvabhūteṣu keśavam| cintayansamatāṁ gaccha samataiva hi muktaye

Markandeya said: O Rajendra, in the same way, you too should contemplate Keshava in all beings and attain equanimity, for equanimity alone leads to liberation.

Verse 65 (skanda.5.348.65)

rājannevaṁ viśeṣeṇa bhūteṣu parameśvaram| vāsudeva kathaṁ doṣāllobhādīnna prahāsyasi

O king, when this Supreme Lord Vasudeva is thus specially present in all beings, why would you not abandon the faults of greed and the rest?

Verse 66 (skanda.5.348.66)

sarvabhūtāni govindādyadā nānyāni bhūpate| tadā vairādayo bhāvāḥ kriyatāṁ na tu putraka

O king, when all beings are not other than Govinda, then, O child, you should never harbour feelings of enmity and the like.

Verse 67 (skanda.5.348.67)

iti paśya jagatsarvaṁ vāsudevātmakaṁ nṛpa| etadeva hi kṛṣṇena rūpamāviṣkṛtaṁ nṛpa

O king, thus see the entire universe as nothing but the very form of Vasudeva; O king, this is that same form revealed by Krishna.

Verse 68 (skanda.5.348.68)

parameśvareti yadrūpaṁ tadetatkathitaṁ tava| janmādibhāvarahitaṁ tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam

That form called the Supreme Lord — this is what has been described to you; free from birth and the other conditions of being, it is the highest state of Vishnu.

Verse 69 (skanda.5.348.69)

saṁkṣepeṇātha bhūpāla śrūyatāṁ yadvadāmi te| yanmataṁ puruṣaḥ kṛtvā paraṁ nirvāṇamṛcchati

O king, now hear in brief what I am about to tell you — that teaching by adopting which a man attains the supreme liberation.

Verse 70 (skanda.5.348.70)

All existence is comprehended entirely within Vishnu; both being and non-being are of his very nature. Existence and non-existence alike — he, the great god, the lord, is the supreme state.

Verse 71 (skanda.5.348.71)

bhavajaladhigatānāṁ dvandvavātāhatānāṁ sutaduhitṛkalatratrāṇabhārārditānām| viṣamaviṣayatoye majjatāmaplavānāṁ bhavati śaraṇameko viṣṇupoto narāṇām

For men who are sunk in the ocean of worldly existence, buffeted by the winds of the pairs of opposites, weighed down by the burden of protecting children and spouse, and drowning, boatless, in the treacherous waters of sense-objects — the one and only refuge is the vessel of Vishnu.
