Avanti Khanda · Chapter 353
The Glory of Shuleshvara Tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.5.353.1)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchenmahīpāla bhadrakālītisaṅgamam| śūlatīrthamiti khyātaṁ svayaṁ devena nirmitam
Markandeya said: O king, then one should go to the confluence of Bhadrakali, known as Shula Tirtha, fashioned by the god himself.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.353.2)
pañcāyatanamadhye tu tiṣṭhate parameśvaraḥ| śūlapāṇirmahādevaḥ sarvadevatapūjitaḥ
In the midst of the five-shrine complex stands the Supreme Lord, trident-bearing Mahadeva, worshipped by all the gods.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.353.3)
sa saṅgamo nṛpaśreṣṭha nityaṁ devairniṣevitaḥ| darśanāttasya tīrthasya snānadānādviśeṣataḥ
O best of kings, that confluence is ever frequented by the gods. By the sight of that tirtha, and especially by bathing and giving gifts there—
Verse 4 (skanda.5.353.4)
daurbhāgyaṁ durnimittaṁ ca hyabhiśāpo nṛpagrahaḥ| yadanyadduṣkṛtaṁ karma naśyate śaṅkaro'bravīt
misfortune, ill omens, curses, royal displeasure, and whatever other evil deed there be — all are destroyed, thus spoke Shankara.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.353.5)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca| kathaṁ śūleśvarī devī kathaṁ śūleśvaro haraḥ| prathito narmadātīre etadvistarato vada
Yudhishthira said: How did the goddess Shuleshvari and Shuleshvara, Hara, come to be renowned on the bank of the Narmada? Tell this at length.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.353.6)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| babhūva brāhmaṇaḥ kaścinmāṇḍavya iti viśrutaḥ| vṛttimānsarvadharmajñaḥ satye tapasi ca sthitaḥ
Markandeya said: There was a certain brahmin renowned by the name Mandavya, a man of good conduct, knowing all dharma, established in truth and austerity.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.353.7)
aśokāśramamadhyastho vṛkṣamūle mahātapāḥ| ūrdhvabāhurmahātejāstasthau maunavratānvitaḥ
In the midst of the Ashoka hermitage, at the foot of a tree, that great ascetic, arms raised aloft, of great splendour, remained fixed in the vow of silence.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.353.8)
tasya kālena mahatā tīvre tapasi vartataḥ| tamāśramamanuprāptā dasyavo loptrahāriṇaḥ
While he was engaged for a long time in that intense austerity, robbers, carrying stolen plunder, arrived at that hermitage.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.353.9)
anusarpyamāṇā bahubhiḥ puruṣairbharatarṣabha| te tasyāvasathe loptraṁ nyadadhuḥ kurunandana
O bull of the Bharatas, being pursued by many men, O descendant of Kuru, they deposited that plunder right there in his hermitage.
Verse 10 (skanda.5.353.10)
nidhāya ca tadā līnāstatraivāśramamaṇḍale| teṣu līneṣvatho śīghraṁ tatastadrakṣiṇāṁ balam
and, having hidden it there, they concealed themselves within that hermitage precinct. Then, soon after they had hidden, the force of the pursuing guards—
Verse 11 (skanda.5.353.11)
ājagāma tato'paśyaṁstamṛṣiṁ taskarānugāḥ| tamapṛcchaṁstadā vṛttaṁ rakṣiṇastaṁ tapodhanam
arrived there, and, pursuing the thieves, they caught sight of that sage. The guards then questioned that ascetic of austere wealth.
Verse 12 (skanda.5.353.12)
vada kena pathā yātā dasyavo dvijasattama| tena gacchāmahe brahman yathā śīghrataraṁ vayam
Speak, O best of the twice-born, by which path have the robbers fled? O brahmin, tell us so that we may go swiftly by that same way.
Verse 13 (skanda.5.353.13)
But though they spoke thus, that ascetic of austere wealth said nothing at all, O king; he uttered not a single word, good or ill.
Verse 14 (skanda.5.353.14)
tataste rājapuruṣā vicinvantastamāśramam| saṁyamyainaṁ tato rājñe sarvān dasyūnnyavedayan
Then those royal officers searched through that hermitage, and, binding him, they reported to the king concerning all the robbers.
Verse 15 (skanda.5.353.15)
taṁ rājā sahitaiścoraiḥ anvaśādvadhyatāmiti| sambadhya taṁ ca tairrājañchūle proto mahātapāḥ
The king, taking him to be bound together with the robbers, ordered his execution. O king, they bound that great ascetic and impaled him upon a stake.
Verse 16 (skanda.5.353.16)
tataste śūlamāropya taṁ muniṁ rakṣiṇastadā| pratijagmurmahīpāla dhanānyādāya tānyatha
Having impaled that sage upon the stake, the guards then returned, O king, taking that wealth with them.
Verse 17 (skanda.5.353.17)
śūlasthaḥ sa tu dharmātmā kālena mahatā tadā| dhyāyandevaṁ trilokeśaṁ śaṅkaraṁ tamumāpatim
That righteous one, impaled upon the stake, then for a long while meditated upon that god, lord of the three worlds, Shankara, husband of Uma.
Verse 18 (skanda.5.353.18)
bahukālaṁ maheśānaṁ manasādhyāya saṁsthitaḥ| nirāhāro'pi viprarṣirmaraṇaṁ nābhyapadyata
Remaining fixed for a long time, contemplating Maheshvara in his mind, that brahmin-seer, even without food, did not meet death.
Verse 19 (skanda.5.353.19)
dhārayāmāsa viprāṇāmṛṣabhaḥ sa hṛdā harim| śūlāgre tapyamānena tapastena kṛtaṁ tadā
That foremost of brahmins held Hari within his heart; suffering upon the tip of the stake, he thus performed austerity.
Verse 20 (skanda.5.353.20)
santāpaṁ paramaṁ jagmuḥ śrutvaitanmunayo'khilāḥ| te rātrau śakunā bhūtvā saṁnyavartanta bhārata
Hearing this, all the sages fell into the deepest distress. O descendant of Bharata, at night, taking the form of birds, they returned there.
Verse 21 (skanda.5.353.21)
darśayanto muneḥ śaktiṁ tamapṛcchan dvijottamam| śrotumicchāma te brahman kiṁ pāpaṁ kṛtavānasi
Displaying the sage's own power, they asked that foremost of the twice-born: O brahmin, we wish to hear — what sin have you committed?
Verse 22 (skanda.5.353.22)
śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tataḥ sa muniśārdūlastānuvāca tapodhanān| doṣataḥ kiṁ gamiṣyāmi na hi me'nyo parādhyati
Shri Markandeya said: Then that tiger among sages said to those ascetics: Because of what fault should I depart? No one else has offended against me.
Verse 23 (skanda.5.353.23)
evamuktvā tataḥ sarvānācacakṣe tato muniḥ| munayaśca tato rājñe dvitīye'hni nyavedayan
Having spoken thus, the sage then related everything. And the sages, on the following day, reported this to the king.
Verse 24 (skanda.5.353.24)
rājā tu tamṛṣiṁ śrutvā niṣkrāntaḥ saha bandhubhiḥ| prasādayāmāsa tadā śūlasthamṛṣisattamam
The king, hearing of that sage, set out with his kinsmen, and sought to appease that foremost of sages, impaled upon the stake.
Verse 25 (skanda.5.353.25)
rājovāca| yanmayā'pakṛtaṁ tāta tavājñānavaśādbahu| prasādaye tvāṁ tatrāhaṁ na me tvaṁ kroddhumarhasi
The king said: O father, for the great wrong I have done you out of ignorance, I beg your forgiveness; you should not be angry with me.
Verse 26 (skanda.5.353.26)
evamuktastato rājñā prasādamakaronmuniḥ| kṛtaprasādaṁ rājā taṁ tataḥ samavatārayat
Thus addressed by the king, the sage, gracious, granted forgiveness. The king then brought down that sage, now appeased.
Verse 27 (skanda.5.353.27)
avatīryamāṇastu muniḥ śūle māṁsatvamāgate| atisaṁpīḍito vipraḥ śaṅkaraṁ manasāgamat
As the sage was being brought down, the stake remained embedded in his flesh; that brahmin, in extreme agony, turned in his mind to Shankara.
Verse 28 (skanda.5.353.28)
saṁdhyātaḥ śaṅkarastena bahukālopavāsataḥ| prādurbhūto mahādevaḥ śūlaṁ tasya tathāchinat
Pleased by his long fast and meditation, Shankara appeared, and Mahadeva then severed the stake from him.
Verse 29 (skanda.5.353.29)
śūlamūlasthitaḥ śambhustuṣṭaḥ prāha punaḥpunaḥ| brūhi kiṁ kriyatāṁ vipra sattvasthānaparāyaṇa
Standing at the base of the stake, Shambhu, pleased, said again and again: Speak, O brahmin, devoted to steadfastness — what shall I do?
Verse 30 (skanda.5.353.30)
adeyamapi dāsyāmi tuṣṭo'smyadyomayā saha| kiṁ tu satyavatāṁ loke siddhirna syācca bhūyasī
I shall give even what is otherwise ungivable; I, together with Uma, am pleased with you today. Yet in this world, why should the truthful not attain abundant accomplishment?
Verse 31 (skanda.5.353.31)
svakarmaṇo'nurūpaṁ hi phalaṁ bhuñjanti jantavaḥ| śubhena karmaṇā bhūtirduḥkhaṁ syātpātakena tu
Creatures reap fruit in accordance with their own deeds; from good action comes prosperity, and from sin, sorrow.
Verse 32 (skanda.5.353.32)
bahubhedaprabhinnaṁ tu manuṣyeṣu vipacyate| keṣāṁ daridrabhāvena keṣāṁ dhanavipattijam
This fruit ripens among men in many differing forms — for some as poverty, for others as the loss of wealth.
Verse 33 (skanda.5.353.33)
santatyabhāvajaṁ keṣāṁ keṣāṁcittadviparyayaḥ| tathā durvṛttitasteṣāṁ phalamāvirbhavennṛṇām
for some as childlessness, for others its opposite; thus does the fruit of men's evil conduct manifest itself.
Verse 34 (skanda.5.353.34)
keṣāṁcitputramaraṇe viyogātpriyamitrayoḥ| rājacaurāgnitaḥ keṣāṁ duḥkhaṁ syāddaivanirmitam
For some, sorrow comes through the death of a son, for others through separation from a beloved or a friend; for still others, fate-ordained suffering comes through a king, a thief, or fire.
Verse 35 (skanda.5.353.35)
tacharīre tu keṣāṁcitkarmaṇā sampradṛśyate| jarāśca vividhāḥ keṣāṁ dṛśyante vyādhayastathā
In the very body of some, the fruit of their deeds becomes visible; in others, various forms of old age and disease are seen.
Verse 36 (skanda.5.353.36)
dṛśyante cābhiśāpāśca pūrvakarmānusaṁcitāḥ| kaṣṭāḥ kaṣṭatarāvasthā gatāḥ kecidanāgasaḥ
Curses accumulated by past deeds are seen too; some innocent men are also observed to fall into more and more grievous states.
Verse 37 (skanda.5.353.37)
pūrvakarmavipākena dharmeṇa tapasi sthitāḥ| dāntāḥ svadāraniratā bhūridāḥ paripūjakāḥ
By the ripening of former deeds, established in righteousness and austerity, self-controlled, devoted to their own wives, generous in giving, and devoted to worship—
Verse 38 (skanda.5.353.38)
hrīmanto nayasaṁyuktā anye bahuguṇairyutāḥ| durgamāmāpadaṁ prāpya nijakarmasamudbhavām
modest, principled, endowed with many virtues — even such people, encountering an insurmountable calamity born of their own past deeds—
Verse 39 (skanda.5.353.39)
na saṁjvaranti ye martyā dharmanindāṁ na kurvate| idameva tapo matvā kṣipanti suvicetasaḥ
do not become distraught by it, nor do they revile righteousness; those of good understanding, regarding that very calamity as austerity, pass through it.
Verse 40 (skanda.5.353.40)
hā bhrātarmātaḥ putreti kaṣṭeṣu na vadanti ye| smaranti māṁ maheśānamathavā puṣkarekṣaṇam
Those who, in adversity, do not cry out 'O brother, O mother, O son,' but instead remember me, Maheshvara, or the lotus-eyed Vishnu—
Verse 41 (skanda.5.353.41)
duṣkṛtaṁ pūrvajaṁ bhoktuṁ dhruvaṁ tadupaśāmyati
having thus experienced their former sin, are surely set at peace.
Verse 42 (skanda.5.353.42)
dināni yāvanti vaset sa kaṣṭe yathākṛtaṁ cintayaddevamīśam| tāvanti saumyāni kṛtāni tena bhavanti vipra śrutinodanaiṣā
O brahmin, for as many days as a man dwells in hardship while contemplating the Lord God, for that many days it becomes turned to his good — this is the teaching of the scriptures.
Verse 43 (skanda.5.353.43)
yasmāttvayā kaṣṭagatena nityaṁ smṛtaścāhaṁ manasā pūjitaśca| gaurīsahāyastena ihāgato'smi brūhyadya kṛtyaṁ kriyatāṁ kiṁ nu vipra
Because, even while in distress, you constantly remembered me and worshipped me in your mind, I have come here together with Gauri. O brahmin, tell me now what should be done.
Verse 44 (skanda.5.353.44)
māṇḍavya uvāca| tuṣṭo yadyumayā sārdhaṁ varado yadi śaṅkara| tadā me śūlasaṁsthasya saṁśayaṁ paramaṁ vada
Mandavya said: O Shankara, if you, together with Uma, are pleased and willing to grant a boon, then resolve for me, impaled here upon the stake, my greatest doubt.
Verse 45 (skanda.5.353.45)
na rujā mama kāpi syācchūlasamprotite'gake| amṛtasrāvi tacchūlaṁ prabhāvātkasya śaṁsa me
My limb, though pierced through by the stake, feels no pain at all; the stake even streams forth nectar — tell me, by whose power is this?
Verse 46 (skanda.5.353.46)
śrīśūlapāṇiruvāca| śūlasthena tvayā vipra manasā cintito'smi yat| anayānāṁ nihantāhaṁ duḥkhānāṁ vinibarhaṇaḥ
Shri Shulapani said: O brahmin, even while impaled upon the stake, you contemplated me in your mind; I am the destroyer of injustices and the remover of sorrows.
Verse 47 (skanda.5.353.47)
dhyātamātro hyahaṁ vipra pātāle vāpi saṁsthitaḥ| śūlamūle tvahaṁ śambhuragre devī svayaṁ sthitā| jaganmātāmbikā devī tvāmṛtenānvapūrayat
O brahmin, I, though I might be even in the netherworld, become present merely by being contemplated. At the base of the stake I myself, Shambhu, stand, and at its tip stands the goddess herself, Ambika, mother of the world, who has filled you with nectar.
Verse 48 (skanda.5.353.48)
māṇḍavya uvāca| pūrvameva sthito yasmācchūlaṁ vyāpyomayā saha| prasādapravaṇo mahyamidānīṁ cānayā saha
Mandavya said: Since you, together with Uma, have already been present, pervading the stake, and now, together with her, are graciously inclined toward me—
Verse 49 (skanda.5.353.49)
yasyāḥ saṁsmaraṇādeva daurbhāgyaṁ pralayaṁ vrajet| na daurbhāgyātparaṁ loke duḥkhādduḥkhataraṁ kila
one whose mere remembrance destroys misfortune — indeed, in this world, there is no sorrow greater than misfortune, none more sorrowful than sorrow itself.
Verse 50 (skanda.5.353.50)
kilaivaṁ śrūyate gāthā purāṇeṣu surottama| trailokyaṁ dahatastubhyaṁ saubhāgyamekatāṁ gatam
O best of gods, thus is the tale heard in the Puranas — that as you were burning the three worlds, Saubhagya, good fortune, became one with you.
Verse 51 (skanda.5.353.51)
viṣṇorvakṣaḥsthalaṁ prāpya tatsthitaṁ ceti naḥ śrutam| pītaṁ tadvakṣasastrastadakṣeṇa parameṣṭhinā
We have also heard that, reaching Vishnu's breast, it settled there; and, terrified, the lord Daksha then drank it from that very breast.
Verse 52 (skanda.5.353.52)
tasmātsatīti saṁjajña iyamindīvarekṣaṇā| yajatastasya deveśa tava mānāvakhaṇḍanāt
and thus this lotus-eyed one was born under the name Sati. O lord of gods, because that sacrificer, Daksha, failed to preserve your honour intact—
Verse 53 (skanda.5.353.53)
juhāvāgnau tu sā devī hyātmānaṁ prāṇasaṁjñikam| ātmānaṁ bhasmasātkṛtvā prāleyādresteataḥ sutā
that goddess offered up her own life-breath, her very self, into the fire; having reduced herself to ashes, she was thereafter born as the daughter of the Himalaya.
Verse 54 (skanda.5.353.54)
menakāyāṁ prabho jātā sāmprataṁ yā hyumābhidhā| anādinidhanā devī hyapratarkyā sureśvara
O lord, born of Menaka, she who is now known by the name Uma. O lord of the gods, that goddess is without beginning or end, beyond all reasoning.
Verse 55 (skanda.5.353.55)
yadi tuṣṭo'si deveśa hyumā me varadā yadi| ubhāvapyatra vai sthāne sthitau śūlāgramūlayoḥ
O lord of gods, if you are pleased, and if Uma too is willing to grant me a boon, then may both of you, established here at the tip and the base of this stake—
Verse 56 (skanda.5.353.56)
avatāro yatra tatra saṁsthitiṁ vai tataḥ kuru
make your permanent abode right here, at the very place of your manifestation.
Verse 57 (skanda.5.353.57)
śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tenaivamukte sahasā kṛtvā bhūmaṇḍalaṁ dvidhā| niḥsṛtau śūlamūlāgrālliṅgārcāpratirūpiṇau
Shri Markandeya said: When he had spoken thus, suddenly splitting the surface of the earth in two, the two of them emerged from the base and tip of the stake, in the form of a linga and an image.
