sanatkumāra uvāca| śṛṇu vyāsa mahābuddhe śiprāmāhātmyamuttamam| yathā'mṛtabhavā khyātā pātāle nāgasaṁmate||

Sanatkumara said: Listen, O Vyasa of great intellect, to the supreme glory of the Shipra — how she became renowned as Amritabhava in Patala, honored by the serpents.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.51.2)

ekadā rudro bhikṣārthaṁ nāgaloke bubhukṣitaḥ| kare kapālamādāya bhogavatyāṁ samāgataḥ||

Once, Rudra, hungry, came for alms into the world of the serpents; taking the skull-bowl in hand, he arrived at Bhogavati.

bhikṣāṁ dehi vaco dīnaṁ vācayitvā gṛhegṛhe| bhikṣā kenāpi no dattā kṣudhitasya ca dhūrjaṭeḥ||

Uttering the humble words 'Give me alms' at every house, no alms at all were given by anyone to the hungry Dhurjati.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.51.4)

tadā krodhābhiraktākṣaḥ śūlapāṇiḥ kṣudhārditaḥ| bhrāmayitvā purīṁ sarvāṁ śanairbahirviniryayau||

Then, his eyes red with rage, trident in hand, tormented by hunger, having wandered through the whole city, he slowly went out beyond it.

ekaviṁśatikuṇḍāni pīyūṣasya dvijottama| yatra tiṣṭhaṁti sarvāṇi nāgalokasya rakṣaṇe||

O best of the twice-born, there were twenty-one cisterns of nectar, all standing there for the protection of the serpent-world.

riktāni pīyūṣakuṇḍāni kṛtvā tatraiva sotthitaḥ| kaṁpitaśca tadā loko nāgānāṁ sarvatomukham||

Having emptied the nectar-cisterns, he rose up right there; then the entire world of the serpents trembled on every side.

For their grace, a bodiless voice spoke: 'Listen, all you serpents — it is you who have insulted a god.'

dattā na bhikṣā kenāpi bhogavatyāṁ pinākinaḥ| tadā bahirgato nāthaḥ kṣudhito dharmavigrahaḥ||

Salutation to Mrida, the self-controlled! Salutation indeed to the one of peaceful form!

Verse 43 (skanda.5.51.43)

evaṁ prasādito nāgairbhagavānvṛṣabhadhvajaḥ| prasannavadano bhūtvā pratyakṣaḥ prāha pannagān||

Thus propitiated by the serpents, the Lord, bull-bannered, his face gracious, appeared before them in person and spoke to the serpents.

Verse 44 (skanda.5.51.44)

śrīmahādeva uvāca| śṛṇudhvamuragāḥ sarve vacastathyaṁ vadāmi vaḥ| nāgaloke purā nityaṁ bhikṣārthaṁ cāgatosmyaham||

Shri Mahadeva said: Listen, all you serpents; I shall tell you the truth. I had come, as always, into the world of the nagas for the purpose of alms.

Verse 45 (skanda.5.51.45)

gṛhegṛhe bhogavatyāṁ vyacaratkṣudhito bhṛśam| kapālaṁ ca kare kṛtvā dhṛtvā kaṁthāṁ sucīrakām||

In Bhogavati, at every house, exceedingly hungry, I went about, the skull-bowl in my hand, wearing a fine patched cloak.

Verse 46 (skanda.5.51.46)

aprāptabhikṣo bhikṣārthī punarāgāṁ tato gṛham| tena pāpaprasaṁgena sudhā naṣṭā ca vaḥ sthalāt||

Having received no alms, though seeking them, I returned then to my own abode; by that occasion of transgression, your nectar was destroyed from its place.

Verse 47 (skanda.5.51.47)

By some occasion of merit, O fortunate ones, you have now reached the supreme Mahakalavana, having left your excellent abode of serpents.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.51.48)

ābālavṛddhaiḥ sastrībhi dṛṣṭā śiprā saridvarā| yasyā darśanamātreṇa suniṣpāpo'smyahaṁ purā||

By all, from children to elders, together with the women, you have beheld the excellent river Shipra — by the mere sight of whom I myself once became wholly free of sin.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.51.49)

śiprāyāṁ snānajaṁ puṇyaṁ vaktuṁ śakto na kīdṛśam| darśanājjāyate śaṁbhustatkṣaṇādbhuvi pannagāḥ||

What kind of merit is born from bathing in the Shipra — of that I am not even able to speak; O serpents, by the mere sight of her one instantly becomes Shambhu on this earth.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.51.50)

yasmātsnānaṁ kṛtaṁ sarvaiḥ śiprāyāṁ pannagottamaiḥ| tena puṇyaprabhāvena sudhāstu vo gṛhegṛhe||

Because bathing in the Shipra has now been performed by all of you, O best of serpents, by the power of that merit, let nectar be in every house of yours once more.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.51.51)

nītvā śiprodakaṁ puṇyaṁ kuṇḍeṣu pariṣiñcata| tenaitāni ca kuṇḍāni amṛtānyekaviṁśatiḥ||

Take the sacred water of the Shipra and sprinkle it into your cisterns; by that, these twenty-one cisterns of nectar—

Verse 52 (skanda.5.51.52)

saṁpūrṇāni bhaviṣyaṁti sthirāṇi pannagottamāḥ| tathetyuktvā ca te sarve dhṛtvā śiprodakaṁ karaiḥ||

'—O best of serpents, shall become full and permanent once more.' Saying 'So be it,' all of them, taking up the water of the Shipra in their hands,

Verse 53 (skanda.5.51.53)

gatāste vai svakaṁ lokaṁ namaskṛtvā maheśvaram| tataḥ prabhṛti sā śiprā nāgaloke'mṛtodbhavā||

returned to their own world, having bowed to Maheshvara. From that time on, that Shipra, in the world of serpents, has been known as Amritodbhava.

Verse 54 (skanda.5.51.54)

sarvalokeṣu vikhyātā vyāsa śiprā'mṛtodbhavā| ye tu tasyāṁ prakurvaṁti narāḥ snānādikaṁ bhuvi||

O Vyasa, the Shipra has become renowned in all the worlds as Amritodbhava. Those men who, upon this earth, perform bathing and the like in her,

Verse 55 (skanda.5.51.55)

na teṣāṁ duṣkṛtaṁ kiṁcinnāpado na ca durgatiḥ| na viyogo bhavetteṣāṁ putradārādikaiḥ kadā||

for them no evil deed remains, nor misfortunes, nor misery; separation from their sons, wives, and the like never befalls them.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.51.56)

na ca mitrāṇi duṣyaṁti na rogo na daridratā| kathāṁ pāpaharāṁ puṇyāṁ sarvakāmavarapradām| paṭhanācchravaṇādvāpi gosahasraphalaṁ labhet||

Their friends never turn corrupt, nor is there disease or poverty. Whoever recites or hears this meritorious, sin-removing tale, granter of every desired boon, obtains the merit of a thousand cows.
