The Legend of the Kshata-Sangama Tirtha

Chapter 55All chaptersChapter 57

Verse 1 (skanda.5.56.1)

sanatkumāra uvāca| tīrthamanyataraṁ vyāsa kṣātāsaṁgamasaṁbhavam| yatra tu snānamātreṇa mahāpāpaiḥ pramucyate

Sanatkumara said: Listen, O Vyasa — I shall tell of another tirtha born at the confluence of the Kshata, where by mere bathing one is freed even from great sins.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.56.2)

amā vai śanivāreṇa yadāyāti samāhitaḥ| pitṝnuddiśya yaḥ kuryācchrāddhaṁ caiva tilodakam

When the new-moon day falls together with a Saturday, whoever performs shraddha and the sesame-water offering directed to the ancestors...

Verse 3 (skanda.5.56.3)

paśyecchanaiścaraṁ devaṁ sthāvaraṁ liṁgamuttamam| tasya śānaiścarī pīḍā na bhavettu kadācana

...and beholds the god Shanaishchara in the great immovable linga — for him the affliction of Saturn shall never occur.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.56.4)

vyāsa uvāca| mahātīrthaṁ samākhyātaṁ mahākālavane śubhe| bhūyastu śrotumicchāmi vistareṇa tapodhana

Vyasa said: The great tirtha in the auspicious Mahakala forest has been told; I wish to hear yet more of it in detail, O rich in austerity.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.56.5)

sanatkumāra uvāca| śrūyatāṁ bho dvijaśreṣṭha kathā paurāṇikī śubhā| yasyāḥ śravaṇamātreṇa mahāpāpakṣayo bhavet

Sanatkumara said: Listen, O best of brahmins, to this auspicious ancient tale, by the mere hearing of which even great sin is destroyed.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.56.6)

revā carmaṇvatī kṣātā tisro nadyaḥ purā'nagha| jātāstrailokyapāvanyo bhuvi cāmarakaṁṭakāt

O sinless one, in ancient times the three rivers Reva, Charmanvati and Kshata were born on earth from Amarakantaka, purifiers of the three worlds.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.56.7)

puṇyāḥ puṇyajalā ramyāḥ pavitrāḥ pāpahārakāḥ| punaṁtyaḥ sarvalokānāṁ snānātpānāttathāpagāḥ

Sacred, of sacred waters, delightful, pure, removers of sin — these rivers purify all the worlds through bathing and drinking.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.56.8)

ekadopavane ramye māṁdhātṛkṣetra uttame| mitho ramaṁti saṁhṛṣṭāḥ parasparajigīṣayā

Once, in a beautiful garden in the excellent domain of Mandhata, they sported joyfully together, each wishing to outdo the other.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.56.9)

kiṁciddoṣaprasaṁgena mitho bhedo hyajāyata| revāsaṁgaṁ parityaktā bhittvā viṁdhyagiriṁ varam

Through some slight quarrel a rift arose between them; abandoning her union with the Reva, the Kshata cut through the great Vindhya mountain...

Verse 10 (skanda.5.56.10)

mahākālavane ramye samā yātā saridvarā| yatra śiprā mahāpuṇyā purī hyeṣā'marāvatī

...and that river came in an even course to the beautiful Mahakala forest, where the greatly sacred Shipra flows and this very city is like Amaravati.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.56.11)

sarvatīrthavaraṁ śreṣṭhaṁ nāmā rudrasaraḥ smṛtam| bhuktimuktipradaṁ nityaṁ siddharṣigaṇasevitam

There the foremost of all tirthas, known by the name Rudrasaras, is remembered — ever granting enjoyment and liberation, attended by hosts of siddhas and sages.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.56.12)

tatrāgatya purā kṣātā śiprāsaṁgaṁ samāśritā| tatra tīrthaṁ paraṁ jātaṁ kṣātāsaṁgamasaṁjñitam| yatra dhūtarajā jātaḥ sadyaḥ prokto vibhāvasuḥ

Coming there of old, the Kshata took refuge in confluence with the Shipra; there arose the supreme tirtha called Kshata-sangama, where it is told that the Sun, Vivasvat, shaken free of his blemish, at once became stainless.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.56.13)

vyāsa uvāca| kathaṁ sūryastvayā prokto virajo hyabhavatpurā| etadveditumicchāmi tvatto brahmavidāṁ vara

Vyasa said: How is it that the Sun, as told by you, became free of blemish in ancient times? I wish to learn this from you in detail, O best among knowers of Brahman.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.56.14)

sanatkumāra uvāca| purānusūryāṁ sāvitrīṁ tvaṣṭā svatanayāṁ dadau

Sanatkumara said: Long ago Tvashta gave in marriage to the Sun his own daughter Savitri, who was called Anusurya, 'she who matches the Sun.'

Verse 15 (skanda.5.56.15)

patidharmaratā nityaṁ siṣeve lokacakṣuṣe| tasyāṁ vai mithunaṁ jajñe lokasākṣivibhāvasoḥ

Ever devoted to her wifely duty, she served the Sun, the eye of the world; from her, to Vivasvat the witness of the world, a twin pair was born.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.56.16)

yamo vaivasvato jāto yamunā lokapāvanī| tatastvaṣṭā'bravīcchāyāṁ svakīyāṁ sūnṛtāṁ giram

Yama Vaivasvata and the world-purifying Yamuna were born; then Tvashta spoke gentle, true words to his own creation, Chhaya.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.56.17)

mithunaṁ me tavotsaṁge dhṛtaṁ tvaṁ paripālaya| tāvadevamiha cchāye yāvatpiturgṛhecarī

'This twin pair of mine, placed in your lap — protect them; remain here thus, O Chhaya, only until Savitri is moving about in her father's house.'

Verse 18 (skanda.5.56.18)

ravibhaktiratā nityaṁ cara tvaṁ mama veśmani| no vācyāhaṁ kadā cchāye piturveśmagatā raveḥ

'Ever devoted to the Sun, live on in my household; but never, O Chhaya, tell the Sun that his true wife has gone to her father's house.'

Verse 19 (skanda.5.56.19)

evaṁ sā samayaṁ kṛtvā sāvitrī hyagamattadā| piturveśmagatā bālā saviturbhayavihvalā

Having thus made this pact, Savitri then departed; the young woman, overwhelmed with fear of the Sun, went to her father's house.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.56.20)

pitrā nivāritā sadyo vaḍavārūpadhāriṇī| vicacāra vane ramye bahulodakaśāḍvale

Forbidden at once by her father from staying, she assumed the form of a mare and wandered in a beautiful, water-rich forest meadow.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.56.21)

ekadā yācitā tena vaivasvatena bubhukṣatā| nodanaṁ vai tayā dattaṁ yācamānāya tatkṣaṇāt

Once, being hungry, Yama Vaivasvata asked Chhaya for food; but she did not give it at once to him who begged.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.56.22)

tadā padāhatā tena cchāyā taṁ ca śaśāpa ha| yatastvaṁ me padāghātaṁ kṛtavānbālabhāvanāt

Then, struck by his foot, Chhaya in turn cursed him: 'Since, out of childish impulse, you have struck me with your foot...'

Verse 23 (skanda.5.56.23)

tasmāttvaṁ ca padā khaṁjo bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ| evaṁ śapto rujākrāṁto vilalāpa śucārditaḥ

'...therefore you shall become lame of foot, without doubt.' Thus cursed, overcome with affliction, he wept, tormented by grief.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.56.24)

etasminnaṁtare vyāsa paribhūya vasuṁdharām| bhāvayansakalāṁllokāngrahacārī vibhāvasuḥ

Meanwhile, O Vyasa, Vivasvat, moving as a planet and illumining all the worlds, arrived there.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.56.25)

dṛṣṭvā ca tanayaṁ paṁgumityuvāca vibhāvasuḥ| kimidaṁ vatsa te kaṣṭaṁ kutaḥ prāptaṁ tvayā'nagha

Seeing his son lame, Vivasvat said: 'What is this trouble of yours, my child? Whence has it come to you, O sinless one?'

Verse 26 (skanda.5.56.26)

iti pṛṣṭo yadā tena savitrā lokabhāsvatā| uvāca gadgadāṁ vācaṁ yamaḥ saṁyaminīpatiḥ

Thus questioned by the world-illumining Sun, Yama, lord of restraint, spoke in a voice choked with emotion.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.56.27)

prātarāśāya me nātha yācitaṁ māturaṁtikāt| no dattaṁ bhojanaṁ kṣipraṁ bālabhāvena tāḍitā

'O lord, I asked my mother for my morning meal; when food was not quickly given, out of childish impulse I struck her.'

Verse 28 (skanda.5.56.28)

pādau me galitau sadyo mātuḥ śāpaparābhavau| tacchrutvā mohamāpanno ravirdhyānaparāyaṇaḥ

'My two feet at once became crippled by my mother's curse.' Hearing this, the Sun fell into confusion and became absorbed in meditation.

Verse 29 (skanda.5.56.29)

vicitramidamākhyātaṁ mātuḥ śāpasya kāraṇam| evaṁ dhyātvā ciraṁ kālaṁ jñātavānraviraṁśumān

'Strange indeed is this account of the mother's curse,' he thought; and having meditated long, the radiant Sun came to know the truth.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.56.30)

neyaṁ sā rucirāpāṁgī tvāṣṭrī lokasya pāvanī| keyaṁ vā kuta āyātā kāsi tvaṁ ca śucismite

'This is not that lovely-eyed daughter of Tvashta, purifier of the world. Who then is this, and whence has she come? Who are you, O one of pure smile?'

Verse 31 (skanda.5.56.31)

chāyovāca| nānusūryā mahārāja chāyā tasyāḥ svasaṁbhavā| gatā vai sā piturgehe vāritāhaṁ tayā'nagha

Chhaya said: 'O great king, I am not Anusurya; I am Chhaya, born of her own being. She has indeed gone to her father's house, O sinless one, and she has forbidden me to reveal it.'

Verse 32 (skanda.5.56.32)

savitre naiva vaktavyaṁ chāye kiṁcitkathaṁcana| eṣa me samayo nātha tenāhaṁ maunamāsthitā

'"Nothing whatsoever is to be told to the Sun, Chhaya" — this was my pledge, my lord; that is why I have remained silent.'

Verse 33 (skanda.5.56.33)

tacchrutvā bhagavāṁstvaṣṭuḥ samīpaṁ roṣamāsthitaḥ| jagāma sahasā bhānurbahuroṣasamanvitaḥ

Hearing this, the illustrious Sun, filled with great anger, went at once to Tvashta's presence, overcome with fury.

Verse 34 (skanda.5.56.34)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā sahasotthāya tvaṣṭā lokapitāmahaḥ| pādyārghyācamanīyaṁ ca madhuparkairapūjayat

Seeing him, Tvashta, grandfather of the world, rose up at once and honoured him with water for the feet, arghya, sipping-water, and madhuparka.

Verse 35 (skanda.5.56.35)

natvā pādau parikramya bahumānapuraḥsaram| uvāca madhurayā vācā priyaṁ te karavāma kim

Bowing at his feet and circling him with great respect, he said in a sweet voice: 'What pleasing thing may I do for you?'

Verse 36 (skanda.5.56.36)

raviruvāca| kva sānusūryā sāvitrī mamānupriyakāriṇī| āgatā te gṛhaṁ tāta mama mārgānumodinī

The Sun said: 'Where is that Savitri, called Anusurya, who acts ever pleasingly toward me? Has she, who delights in following my path, come to your house, father?'

Verse 37 (skanda.5.56.37)

tvaṣṭovāca| na jānīmo vayaṁ tāta priyā me kva gatā sutā| ityukte vacane tvaṣṭrā ravirduściṁtamānasaḥ

Tvashta said: 'My son, we do not know where my beloved daughter has gone.' Hearing these words of Tvashta, the Sun's mind grew deeply troubled.

Verse 38 (skanda.5.56.38)

kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi kva ca priyatarā mama| iti saṁbhāṣamāṇe tu tvaṣṭā vākyamathābravīt

'What shall I do? Where shall I go? Where is my most beloved?' As he spoke thus, Tvashta then said these words.

Verse 39 (skanda.5.56.39)

tava tejaḥ paribhraṣṭā bhagnā kvāpi gatābalā| yadi te vallabhā bhāryā tejastvaṁ pariśāmaya

'Overwhelmed by your fierce brilliance, that frail woman has broken away and gone off somewhere. If she is your beloved wife, then you must pare down your radiance.'

Verse 40 (skanda.5.56.40)

sūrya uvāca| yadyevaṁ dussahaṁ tejo mama pūrvapitāmaha| tadā te rocate samyagyathā syādvai tathā kuru

The Sun said: 'O ancient grandfather, if my brilliance is truly so unbearable, then do exactly as seems right to you.'

Verse 41 (skanda.5.56.41)

iti sūryavacaḥ śrutvā śāṇaṁ kṛtvā sudarśanam| ghṛṣṭitaḥ kṣuradhāreṇa laghīyānnirmalo'bhavat

Hearing the Sun's words, Tvashta set him upon the grinding-wheel called Sudarshana; ground down by its razor edge, he became lighter and stainless.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.56.42)

tasya ghṛṣṭitamātreṇa tvaṣṭā cakre vivasvataḥ| śāṇaṁ sudarśanaṁ cakraṁ saikatā maṇijātayaḥ

From the very filings of Vivasvat's radiance, Tvashta fashioned the discus Sudarshana; and from its sand-like dust arose the various kinds of gems.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.56.43)

tadā tvaṣṭā'bravīdvākyaṁ madhuraṁ sūryasaṁnidhau| mahākālavane ramye vaḍavārūpadhāriṇī

Then Tvashta spoke sweet words in the Sun's presence: 'In the beautiful Mahakala forest is she who has taken the form of a mare —'

Verse 44 (skanda.5.56.44)

gṛhyatāṁ bhoḥ suraśreṣṭha śīghraṁ gacchatu śāḍvale| yatra śiprā saricchreṣṭhā yatra kṣātā samāgatā

'— go swiftly, O best of gods, and take her up in that meadow where the foremost river Shipra meets the Kshata.'

Verse 45 (skanda.5.56.45)

ubhayoḥ saṁgamo yatra tatra muktirna saṁśayaḥ| tatra tāṁ subhagāṁ patnīṁ prāpsyasi tvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

'Where the confluence of the two occurs, there liberation is certain; there you shall surely regain that fortunate wife of yours.'

Verse 46 (skanda.5.56.46)

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā savitā sarvatāpanaḥ| tatrāgamadvanaṁ yatra mahākālasya pāvanam

Hearing these words, Savitr, who warms the whole world, went there, to that sacred forest of Mahakala.

Verse 47 (skanda.5.56.47)

kṣātāsaṁgamasaṁyuktā yatra śiprā payasvinī| tatra bhuktiśca muktiśca dhanadhānyasamāgamaḥ

There, joined at the confluence with the Kshata, flows the abundant Shipra; there both enjoyment and liberation are found, together with wealth and grain.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.56.48)

tatrāgatya priyāṁ bhāryāṁ vaḍavārūpadhāriṇīm| dadarśa tāṁ punaḥ śyāmāṁ harirūpadharo hariḥ

Coming there in the form of a horse, Hari the Sun once again beheld his beloved, dark-hued wife in her mare's form.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.56.49)

nāsikāghrāṇamātreṇa yatra jātau sutāvubhau| darśanīyau sunṛmṇāṁgau bhiṣajau tau divaukasām

There, by the mere scent-contact of their nostrils, two sons were born, both beautiful and finely formed — the two physicians of the gods.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.56.50)

chāyā ca suṣuve tatra mithunaṁ dvijasattama| tāpīṁ śanaiścaraṁ caiva sarvalokapratāpanam

And Chhaya too, O best of brahmins, gave birth there to a twin pair — the river Tapi, and Shanaishchara, who scorches all the worlds.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.56.51)

śaniyoge yadāmā vai jāyate sarvakāmadā| tadā snānaṁ ca dānaṁ ca śrāddhaṁ caiva tu kārayet

When the new-moon day falls in conjunction with Saturn, it grants every wish; then one should perform bathing, charity, and the shraddha rite.

Verse 52 (skanda.5.56.52)

tasya hastagatā lakṣmīrjāyate sarvadā bhuvi| kṣātāsaṁgame naraḥ snātvā dānaṁ dattvā ca śaktitaḥ

Fortune ever comes into his hands upon this earth; a man who bathes at the Kshata-sangama and gives charity according to his ability...

Verse 53 (skanda.5.56.53)

sthāvareśaṁ samabhyarcya tasya pāpakṣayo bhavet| sauriḥ śanaiścaro maṁdaḥ kṛṣṇo'naṁto'ntako yamaḥ

...and worships Sthavaresha, his sins are destroyed. Sauri, Shanaishchara, Manda, Krishna, Ananta, Antaka, Yama...

Verse 54 (skanda.5.56.54)

piṁgaśchāyāsuto babhruḥ sthāvaraḥ pippalāyanaḥ| etāni śanināmāni prātaḥkāle paṭhennaraḥ

...Pinga, Chhaya-suta, Babhru, Sthavara, Pippalayana — these names of Saturn, whatever man recites at dawn...

Verse 55 (skanda.5.56.55)

tasya śānaiścarī pīḍā na bhavettu kadācana| yamadharmo'pi cātraiva tapastepe sudustaram

...for him the affliction of Saturn shall never occur. Yama-Dharma too performed extremely arduous austerity here.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.56.56)

yajñakuṇḍottare bhāge yatra tiṣṭhati mārutiḥ| dharmasareti vikhyātaṁ nāmnā tattīrthamuttamam

In the northern part of the sacrificial fire-pit, where Maruti stands, that excellent tirtha is known by the name Dharmasara.

Verse 57 (skanda.5.56.57)

yatra siddhiṁ parāṁ prāptastapasā pavanātmajaḥ| tasmiṁstīrthe naraḥ snātvā dattvā vai kāṁsyabhājanam

There the son of the Wind attained the highest perfection through austerity. A man who bathes in that tirtha and gives a bronze vessel...

Verse 58 (skanda.5.56.58)

savāso maṇimuktābhiḥ kāṁcanālaṁkṛtaṁ varam| brāhmaṇebhyaḥ svalaṁkṛtya vedavidbhyaśca sādaram

...along with cloth, finely adorned with gems, pearls, and gold, respectfully and reverently to brahmins learned in the Veda...

Verse 59 (skanda.5.56.59)

mātṛlokaṁ samuttīrṇo brahmaloke mahīyate| śrāvaṇe māsyubhe pakṣe ekādaśyāṁ tu yo naraḥ

...passes beyond the world of the mothers and is exalted in the world of Brahma. And whatever man, on the eleventh day of either fortnight of Shravana...

Verse 60 (skanda.5.56.60)

dharmatīrthe sadācārī snānadānādikāḥ kriyāḥ| karoti satataṁ tasya viṣṇulokaḥ sanātanaḥ

...performs, with good conduct, the rites of bathing and charity at the Dharma-tirtha — for him the eternal world of Vishnu is ever assured.

Verse 61 (skanda.5.56.61)

cyavanāśrame naraḥ snātvā cyavaneśvaraṁ vilokayet| yatra siddhiṁ gatau puṇyāvaśvinau bhiṣajāṁ varau

A man, having bathed at Chyavana's hermitage, should behold Chyavaneshvara; there the two sacred Ashvins, foremost of physicians, attained perfection.

Verse 62 (skanda.5.56.62)

cyavanasya prasādena devapaṁktimavāpatuḥ| cyavanena purā dṛṣṭiḥ prāptā vai devabheṣajāt

By Chyavana's grace, the two of them obtained a place among the gods; and Chyavana of old obtained his eyesight through the physic of the gods.

Verse 63 (skanda.5.56.63)

tasmiṁstīrthe dvijaśreṣṭha divyadṛṣṭirbhavennaraḥ| atraiva prāptavānsūryaḥ sāgnihotrāśramaṁ param

In that tirtha, O best of brahmins, a man gains divine sight. Here indeed the Sun attained the supreme hermitage together with its sacred fire.

Verse 64 (skanda.5.56.64)

anusūryāṁ mahābhāgāṁ sāvitrīṁ lokaviśrutām| sūryalokaṁ samāsādya bubhuje vipulāṁ śriyam

Having regained the glorious, world-renowned Savitri called Anusurya, and attaining his solar realm, the Sun enjoyed vast splendour.

Verse 65 (skanda.5.56.65)

tasmādvyāsa paraṁ tīrthaṁ kṣātāsaṁgamasaṁjñitam| sarvapāpaharaṁ puṇyaṁ sarvakāmavarapradam

Therefore, O Vyasa, this supreme tirtha called Kshata-sangama removes all sin, is sacred, and grants every desired boon.

Verse 66 (skanda.5.56.66)

ya etāṁ tu kathāṁ puṇyāṁ śṛṇoti bhuvi bhaktitaḥ| paṭhedvā prātarutthāya tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu

Whoever on earth hears this sacred tale with devotion, or reads it having risen at dawn — hear now the merit of its fruit.

Verse 67 (skanda.5.56.67)

kapilāgosahasreṇa phalaṁ bhavati parvaṇi| tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

The merit obtained from the gift of a thousand tawny cows on a sacred day — that very merit he obtains; of this there should be no doubt.
