Bathing and Charity at Purushottama in the Adhika-Masa
Verse 1 (skanda.5.61.1)
सनत्कुमार उवाच। अधिमासं समासाद्य योऽन्यत्र स्थितिमात्मनः। करोति स नरो मूर्खो महाकालवनादृते
sanatkumāra uvāca| adhimāsaṁ samāsādya yo'nyatra sthitimātmanaḥ| karoti sa naro mūrkho mahākālavanādṛte
Sanatkumara said: Whoever, when the Adhika-masa arrives, makes his abode elsewhere than at the Mahakala forest — that man is a fool.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.61.2)
अधिमासे नरो व्यास तीर्थे पुरुषोत्तमाभिधे। स्नात्वा दत्त्वा च दानानि तेषां लोकाः सनातनाः
adhimāse naro vyāsa tīrthe puruṣottamābhidhe| snātvā dattvā ca dānāni teṣāṁ lokāḥ sanātanāḥ
O Vyasa, a man who in the Adhika-masa bathes at the tirtha named Purushottama and gives gifts there attains the eternal worlds.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.61.3)
पुरुषोत्तमं समभ्यर्च्य रमालालितपादकम्। तथैव च उमां देवीं शंकरेण च पूजयेत्
puruṣottamaṁ samabhyarcya ramālālitapādakam| tathaiva ca umāṁ devīṁ śaṁkareṇa ca pūjayet
Having duly worshipped Purushottama, whose feet are cherished by Rama, and likewise worshipped the goddess Uma together with Shankara...
Verse 4 (skanda.5.61.4)
वांछितार्थशतं प्राप्य विष्णुलोके महीयते। भाद्रपदे सिते पक्षे एकादश्यां समाहितः। उपोष्य विधिवद्व्यास रात्रौ जागरणं चरेत्
vāṁchitārthaśataṁ prāpya viṣṇuloke mahīyate| bhādrapade site pakṣe ekādaśyāṁ samāhitaḥ| upoṣya vidhivadvyāsa rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ caret
...one obtains a hundred desired things and is exalted in the world of Vishnu. On the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, with composed mind...
Verse 5 (skanda.5.61.5)
विष्णोश्च पूजनं कार्यं जलयात्रा तथैव च। पुरुषोत्तमसरे नित्यं तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु
viṣṇośca pūjanaṁ kāryaṁ jalayātrā tathaiva ca| puruṣottamasare nityaṁ tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu
...having duly fasted, O Vyasa, one should keep vigil through the night; the worship of Vishnu and the water-procession should also be performed. Hear now the ever-sacred fruit of the Purushottama lake.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.61.6)
पुत्रदारधनं सम्यगायुरारोग्यसंपदः। न तेषां दुर्लभं किंचित्त्रिषु लोकेषु विद्यते
putradāradhanaṁ samyagāyurārogyasaṁpadaḥ| na teṣāṁ durlabhaṁ kiṁcittriṣu lokeṣu vidyate
Sons, a good wife, wealth in full measure, longevity and the wealth of health — nothing of these remains difficult to obtain for them in all three worlds.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.61.7)
तस्य पूर्वतरे भागे जटेश्वरमहेश्वरः। तिष्ठति तापसस्तीरे यत्र राजा भगीरथः
tasya pūrvatare bhāge jaṭeśvaramaheśvaraḥ| tiṣṭhati tāpasastīre yatra rājā bhagīrathaḥ

Verse 8 (skanda.5.61.8)
तपस्तप्त्वा परं लेभे पुण्यं पुण्यवतां वरः। गंगां भूतलमानीय सर्वलोकसुखाय वै
tapastaptvā paraṁ lebhe puṇyaṁ puṇyavatāṁ varaḥ| gaṁgāṁ bhūtalamānīya sarvalokasukhāya vai
...austerity and obtained supreme merit; foremost among the meritorious, he brought the Ganga down to the earth for the happiness of all the worlds.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.61.9)
तस्य तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा तिलधेनुं प्रदापयेत्। सर्वयज्ञफलं प्राप्य पुत्रवाञ्जायते नरः
tasya tīrthe naraḥ snātvā tiladhenuṁ pradāpayet| sarvayajñaphalaṁ prāpya putravāñjāyate naraḥ
A man who bathes at that tirtha should offer a gift of a sesame-cow; obtaining thereby the fruit of every sacrifice, that man becomes blessed with sons.
Verse 10 (skanda.5.61.10)
तस्येशानतरे भागे रामो भार्गवसत्तमः। तपस्तेपे सुधर्मात्मा आत्मकायविशुद्धये
tasyeśānatare bhāge rāmo bhārgavasattamaḥ| tapastepe sudharmātmā ātmakāyaviśuddhaye
In its north-eastern portion, Rama, foremost of the Bhargavas and of righteous soul, performed austerity for the purification of his own body.
Verse 11 (skanda.5.61.11)
कौशिकी च सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा सर्वतीर्थवरप्रदा। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो जातिहत्यादोषविवर्जितः
kauśikī ca saricchreṣṭhā sarvatīrthavarapradā| tatra snātvā naro jātihatyādoṣavivarjitaḥ
And there is the Kaushiki, foremost of rivers, granting the merit of all tirthas; bathing there, a man is freed from the sin of killing one of his own kind.
Verse 12 (skanda.5.61.12)
रामेश्वरं समालोक्य धूतपापो भवेन्नरः
rāmeśvaraṁ samālokya dhūtapāpo bhavennaraḥ
Beholding Rameshvara, a man becomes cleansed of sin.
