Avanti Khanda · Chapter 77

The Greatness of Svarnajvaleshvara

Chapter 76All chaptersChapter 78

Verse 1 (skanda.5.77.1)

śrīmahādeva uvāca| svarṇajvāleśvaraṁ ṣaṣṭhaṁ viddhi cātra yaśasvini| yasya darśanamātreṇa dhanavāniha jāyate

Shri Mahadeva said: "Know here, O glorious one, the sixth god as Svarnajvaleshvara; by the mere sight of whom a man becomes wealthy in this world."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.77.2)

purā sārddhaṁ tvayā devi krīḍato mama maṁdire| jātaṁ varṣaśataṁ divyaṁ surataikarasasya ca

Formerly, O Devi, while sporting with you in my abode, a hundred divine years passed, given wholly to the delight of love.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.77.3)

devaiḥ sarvaistato vahniḥ prerito mama saṁnidhau| tato vahniḥ samāyātastrailokyārthe yaśasvini

Then, by all the gods, Agni was sent into my presence; then Agni came there, for the sake of the three worlds, O glorious one.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.77.4)

tato vahnimukhe kṣiptaṁ vīryaṁ svaṁ krīḍatā mayā| dahyamānastadā tena gaṁgāṁ vahnirjagāma ha

Then, as I was at play, my own seed fell into the mouth of Agni; being burned by it, Agni then went to the Ganga.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.77.5)

tatra gatvā pracikṣepa vīryamagniḥ sudurddharam| tathāpi dahyate vahnirvīryaśeṣeṇa pārvati

Having gone there, Agni cast forth that seed, so hard to bear; even so, O Parvati, Agni went on burning from the remainder of the seed.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.77.6)

jātaṁ ramyaṁ tato divyaṁ vīryaśeṣeṇa kāṁcanam| jvalaṁtaṁ cātitāpena duḥsahaṁ durddharaṁ priye

From the remainder of the seed there then arose lovely, divine gold, blazing with excessive heat, unbearable, hard to hold, O beloved.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.77.7)

agnerapatyaṁ prathamaṁ dṛṣṭvotpannaṁ tu pārvati| lobhābhibhūtā asurāḥ surā gandharvakinnarāḥ

Seeing this firstborn offspring of Agni thus arisen, O Parvati, the asuras, gods, gandharvas and kinnaras, overcome with greed —

Verse 8 (skanda.5.77.8)

yakṣāḥ sādhyāḥ piśācāśca manuṣyā rākṣasāḥ khagāḥ| abhyadhāvansusaṁrabdhāste suvarṇajighṛkṣavaḥ

— the yakshas, sadhyas, pishachas, men, rakshasas, and birds, all rushed forward in great excitement, eager to seize the gold.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.77.9)

suvarṇārthe mahānnādo mamedamiti jalpatām| ajñānātsaṁgaraścaiva saṁjātaḥ prāṇahārakaḥ

A great uproar arose over the gold, as each cried, "This is mine!"; and out of ignorance a life-destroying battle broke out.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.77.10)

athāvaraṇamukhyāni nānāpraharaṇāni ca| pragṛhyābhyanadannādairdevaiḥ sārddhaṁ yaśasvini

Then, seizing shields foremost among their gear and weapons of many kinds, they roared with battle-cries against the gods, O glorious one.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.77.11)

asurā asuraiḥ sārddhaṁ manuṣyā mānuṣaiḥ saha| gandharvāḥ saha gandharvaiḥ kiṁnaraiḥ saha kiṁnarāḥ

Asuras against asuras, men against men, gandharvas against gandharvas, kinnaras against kinnaras —

Verse 12 (skanda.5.77.12)

bhūtaiḥ sārddhaṁ ca bhūtāni rākṣasaiḥ saha rākṣasāḥ| vetālaiḥ saha vetālā yuddhaṁ cakruḥ sudāruṇam

— bhutas against bhutas, rakshasas against rakshasas, vetalas against vetalas — they waged a most terrible war.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.77.13)

putrastu pitaraṁ dveṣṭi pitā putraṁ tathaiva ca| haṁti bhāryā svabhartāraṁ bhartā ca svāṁ priyāṁ tathā

Son hated father, and father likewise hated son; wife slew her own husband, and husband his own beloved wife likewise.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.77.14)

mātaraṁ svasuto haṁti mātā putraṁ hinasti ca| tato vairavinirbaṁdhaḥ saṁjātaḥ svarṇakāraṇāt

The son slew his own mother, and the mother slew her son; thus were bonds of enmity forged, all on account of the gold.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.77.15)

surāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca sarvaṁ ghorataraṁ mahat| prāsāśca vipulāstīkṣṇā nyapataṁta sahasraśaḥ| tomarāśca sutīkṣṇāgrāḥ śastrāṇi vividhāni ca

Among gods and asuras everything became exceedingly terrible and vast; sharp, massive lances fell by the thousands, javelins with keen points, and weapons of every kind —

Verse 16 (skanda.5.77.16)

suvarṇārthe mahādevi vamaṁto rudhiraṁ bahu

— for the sake of gold, O great Devi, warriors fell, vomiting much blood.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.77.17)

asiśaktigadāṛṣṭyo nipeturdharaṇītale| chinnāni paṭṭiśaiścaiva śirāṁsi yudhi dāruṇaiḥ

Swords, spears, maces, and lances fell to the ground; heads were severed in the terrible battle by pattisha-blades.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.77.18)

rudhireṇāvaliptāṁgā nihatāśca parasparam| adrīṇāmiva kūṭāni dhātuyuktāni śerate

Their limbs smeared with blood, slain by one another, they lay like the ore-streaked peaks of mountains.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.77.19)

hāhākāraḥ samabhavadbhayakṛcca sahasraśaḥ| anyonyaṁ chiṁdatāṁ śastraiḥ suvarṇasya ca kāraṇāt

A cry of lamentation arose, a thousandfold terrifying, as they cut one another down with weapons, all for the sake of the gold.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.77.20)

parighairāyasaiḥ pāśairvajrakalpaiśca muṣṭibhiḥ| nighnatāṁ samare'nyonyaṁ śabdo divamivāspṛśat

With iron bars, with nooses, with fists like thunderbolts, as they struck one another in that battle, the din seemed to touch the very sky.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.77.21)

chiṁdhibhiṁdhi pradhāva tvaṁ pātayādhisareti ca| aśrūyanta mahāghorāḥ śabdāstatra samaṁtataḥ

"Cut! Pierce! Rush forward! Strike him down! Chase him!" — such most terrible cries were heard there on every side.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.77.22)

evaṁ tu tumule yuddhe varttamāne mahābhaye| kaṁpitā dharaṇī devi devāstrastāḥ savāsavāḥ

While such a tumultuous, most fearsome battle was raging, the earth trembled, O Devi, and the gods, together with Vasava, were terrified.

Verse 23 (skanda.5.77.23)

kṣubhyaṁti sma samudrāśca celuśca dharaṇīdharāḥ| tasyārthe pīḍitaṁ sarvaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam

The oceans grew agitated, and the mountains shook; for its sake the whole world, with gods, asuras, and men, was afflicted.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.77.24)

ṛṣayo vālakhilyādyā devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ| bṛhaspatiṁ puraskṛtya brahmalokaṁ gatāḥ striyaḥ

The sages beginning with the Valakhilyas, and the gods led by Shakra, with Brihaspati at their head, went with their womenfolk to the world of Brahma.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.77.25)

socchvāsā kathayāmāsurjarjarīkṛtamastakāḥ| vṛttāṁtaṁ vistarātsarvaṁ lokatrayavināśanam

Panting, their heads battered, they related in full detail the whole event, the destruction of the three worlds.

Verse 26 (skanda.5.77.26)

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ teṣāṁ brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ| ciṁtayitvā ca taiḥ sārddhamājagāma mamāṁtikam

Hearing their words, Brahma, grandfather of the worlds, having reflected, came together with them into my presence.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.77.27)

mayā pṛṣṭāstu te sarve kenaite jarjarīkṛtāḥ| śastrāstraiḥ pīḍitāḥ kena kasmādvo bhayamāgatam

I asked all of them: "By whom have you been so battered? By whom afflicted with weapons? From what has this fear come upon you?"

Verse 28 (skanda.5.77.28)

kaścāsau dānavo duṣṭo yena vai pīḍitā bhṛśam| tatsarvaṁ kathitaṁ devi mamāgre bhayavihvalaiḥ

"Who is that wicked danava by whom you have been so grievously afflicted?" All this, O Devi, was told before me by them, overcome with fear.

Verse 29 (skanda.5.77.29)

te māmūcustadā devā brahmādyā bhayakāraṇam

Then the gods, headed by Brahma, told me the cause of their fear —

Verse 30 (skanda.5.77.30)

lobhātsarve vinaṣṭāḥ sma suvarṇasya ca kāraṇāt| pīḍitaṁ ca jagatsarvaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam

"We have all been ruined by greed, on account of gold; the whole world, with gods, asuras, and men, has been afflicted."

Verse 31 (skanda.5.77.31)

iti teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā mayā jñātaṁ varānane| tasyārthe kalaho ghoraḥ saṁjāto hi parasparam

Hearing their words, I understood, O fair-faced one, that on its account this terrible strife had arisen among them all —

Verse 32 (skanda.5.77.32)

lokatrayavināśaśca sahasā yena vai kṛtaḥ| yamuddiśya tyajetprāṇāṁstamāhurbrahmaghātakam

— and by which the destruction of the three worlds had suddenly been wrought. Whoever gives up his life on its account, him they shall call a slayer of a brahmin.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.77.33)

brahmahā vahniputrastu yamuddiśya mṛto janaḥ| śarīraṁ śabalaṁ caiva savikāraṁ bhaviṣyati

A man who dies on account of Agni's son shall become guilty of brahmin-slaying; his body shall become mottled and deformed.

Verse 34 (skanda.5.77.34)

dhātavo hi bhaviṣyaṁti tasya dehe na saṁśayaḥ| lakṣyate duḥkhamatulaṁ chedadāhādigharṣaṇam

The bodily humors shall become disordered in his body, there is no doubt; incomparable suffering shall be his to bear — cutting, burning, chafing, and the like.

Verse 35 (skanda.5.77.35)

etasminnaṁtare vahnirdṛṣṭvā putrasya ceṣṭitam| jñātvā krodhaṁ madīyaṁ tu bhīto vai putrakāraṇāt

Meanwhile Agni, seeing the doings wrought by his son, and learning of my anger, became afraid on his son's account.

Verse 36 (skanda.5.77.36)

ājagāma suvarṇena sārddhaṁ devi mamāṁtikam| prasādito'haṁ putrārthe vahninā hi varānane

He came, together with the gold, O Devi, into my presence; and I was entreated by Agni on his son's behalf, O fair-faced one —

Verse 37 (skanda.5.77.37)

rakṣaṇīyastvayā deva putroyaṁ tava śaṁkara| bhāṇḍāgāre svakīye tu kriyatāṁ parameśvara

"O God, this son of mine must be protected by you; place him, O Shankara, O Supreme Lord, in your own treasury —"

Verse 38 (skanda.5.77.38)

tvayi tuṣṭe mahādeva prāpyo'yaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ| icchayā dīyatāṁ devi yasya kasya janasya ca

"— once you are pleased, O Mahadeva, he may be attained, there is no doubt of it; O Devi, let him be given, at will, to whatever person you choose."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.77.39)

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā pitṛdevamukhasya ca| tatheti ca pratijñātaṁ mayā lobhādyaśasvini

Hearing these words from the mouth of that father-god, O glorious one, I promised, out of eager fondness, "So be it."

Verse 40 (skanda.5.77.40)

snehānmayā vahniputra utsaṁge ca kṛtastadā| snehādvai cuṁbito mūrdhni pariṣvaktaḥ punaḥpunaḥ

Out of affection I then took Agni's son upon my lap; out of affection I kissed him upon the head, and embraced him again and again.

Verse 41 (skanda.5.77.41)

dadāmi te mahābhāga varaṁ varaya śobhanam| parituṣṭo'smi vai kāmaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ samavāpnuhi

"I grant you a boon, O fortunate one; choose a fair one. I am well pleased indeed; obtain your desire as you wish."

Verse 42 (skanda.5.77.42)

ahamājñāpayāmi tvāṁ śreyaścaivamavāpsyasi| mamābhīṣṭakaraṁ sthānaṁ vidyate pṛthivītale

"I now instruct you, and thereby you shall attain the highest good. There exists, on the surface of the earth, a place dear to my heart —"

Verse 43 (skanda.5.77.43)

akṣayaṁ pralaye putra mahākālavanaṁ śubham| tatraiva vidyate liṁgaṁ karkoṭakasya dakṣiṇe

"— the auspicious Mahakala forest, imperishable even at the great dissolution, my son. There indeed, south of Karkotaka, stands a linga —"

Verse 44 (skanda.5.77.44)

mahāpāpaharaṁ putra darśanāddīptidāyakam| tasya darśanamātreṇa kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyasi

"— destroyer of great sins, my son, bestowing radiance by its very sight. By the mere sight of it, you shall become fulfilled."

Verse 45 (skanda.5.77.45)

puṇyaścaiva pavitreṇa durlabhaśca bhaviṣyati| akulīnaḥ kulīnastu samalo nirmalo naraḥ

"By this purity a man becomes meritorious, and rare; the lowborn becomes highborn, the impure man becomes stainless —"

Verse 46 (skanda.5.77.46)

virūpo rūpavāṁścaiva tvatprasādādbhaviṣyati| dānāni paripūrṇāni vratāni niyamāstathā

"— the ill-formed becomes well-formed, by your grace. Gifts shall become complete in their merit, and vows and observances likewise —"

Verse 47 (skanda.5.77.47)

yajñāścaivopavāsāśca tīrthaṁ piṁḍādikaṁ tvayā| susaṁpūrṇā bhaviṣyaṁti tava dānena suvrata

"— sacrifices, fasts, pilgrimage, the offering of pindas, and the like, O one of good vows, shall become fully complete through your gift."

Verse 48 (skanda.5.77.48)

sarveṣāṁ caiva ratnānāmādhipatyaṁ kariṣyasi| priyābhīṣṭo hi devānāṁ lokānāṁ ca bhaviṣyasi

"You shall hold lordship over all jewels; you shall become beloved and desired by the gods and by all the worlds."

Verse 49 (skanda.5.77.49)

ityukto'sau mahādevi divyarūpo varānane| jvālāmālāvṛtaḥ puṇyo nirmalo hi babhūva ha

Thus addressed, O great Devi, O fair-faced one, he took on a divine form, wreathed in garlands of flame, becoming holy and stainless indeed.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.77.50)

liṁgenoktaḥ suvarṇastu diṣṭyādiṣṭyeti kāṁcanam| adyaprabhṛti nāmnā vai khyātiṁ yāsyasi bhūtale

The linga said to the gold: "Good fortune, good fortune indeed, O gold! From this day, by this very name, you shall become renowned on earth —"

Verse 51 (skanda.5.77.51)

sthātavyaṁ matsamīpe tu vahniputra tvayā sadā| akṣayā bhavitā kīrttistvadīyā bhuvanatraye

"— O son of Agni, you must remain ever near me; your fame shall become imperishable in the three worlds."

Verse 52 (skanda.5.77.52)

ityukto devi liṁgena vahniputro'tinirmalaḥ| jvālāvṛtatanurjātaḥ sūryakoṭisamaprabhaḥ

Thus addressed, O Devi, by the linga, the most stainless son of Agni became one whose body was wreathed in flame, radiant as ten million suns.

Verse 53 (skanda.5.77.53)

dīptirlabdhā suvarṇena jvālāmālākulā tadā| ato devi suvikhyātaḥ svarṇajvāleśvaraḥ śivaḥ

Radiance, wreathed in garlands of flame, was thus obtained by the gold; therefore, O Devi, Shiva became well-renowned as Svarnajvaleshvara.

Verse 54 (skanda.5.77.54)

yastamarcayate bhaktyā svarṇajvāleśvaraṁ śivam| tasya saṁjāyate devi vijayo rājyamūrjitam| aiśvaryaṁ dānaśaktiśca putrapautramanaṁtakam

Whoever worships that auspicious Svarnajvaleshvara Shiva with devotion — for him, O Devi, there arise victory, a flourishing kingdom, prosperity, the power to give, and sons and grandsons without end.

Verse 55 (skanda.5.77.55)

jñānato'jñānato vāpi yatpāpaṁ kurute naraḥ| tatkṣālayati dehotthaṁ darśanānnātra saṁśayaḥ

Whatever sin a man commits, whether knowingly or unknowingly, arising from the body — the mere sight of this linga washes it away, there is no doubt.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.77.56)

yatphalaṁ piṁḍadānena gayāyāṁ labhate naraḥ| tatphalaṁ dviguṇaṁ proktaṁ pūjayā nātra saṁśayaḥ

Whatever fruit a man obtains through the offering of pindas at Gaya — twice that fruit, it is declared, comes from worship here, there is no doubt.

Verse 57 (skanda.5.77.57)

gāyatryāḥ śatasāhasraiḥ samyagjaptaiśca yatphalam| tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti svarṇajvāleśvarastuteḥ

Whatever fruit comes from a hundred thousand rightly-recited repetitions of the Gayatri — that fruit one obtains through praise of Svarnajvaleshvara.

Verse 58 (skanda.5.77.58)

yatpuṇyaṁ sarvadānena dattena vidhipūrvakam| tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti kīrtanānnātra saṁśayaḥ

Whatever merit comes from every kind of gift, duly given according to rule — that fruit one obtains merely by proclaiming his glory, there is no doubt.

Verse 59 (skanda.5.77.59)

pūjayaṁti caturdaśyāṁ svarṇajvāleśvaraṁ tu ye| pūjyaṁte te sadā lakṣmyā pūrayaṁtyā manorathān

Those who worship Svarnajvaleshvara on the fourteenth lunar day — they are ever honored by Lakshmi, who fulfills their heart's desires.

Verse 60 (skanda.5.77.60)

rakṣitaṁ tridaśairdevi gaṇairnānāvidhaistathā| liṁgaṁ kaścinna jānāti mama māyāvimohitaḥ

This linga, O Devi, is guarded by the thirty gods and by ganas of various kinds; deluded by my maya, no one knows it.

Verse 61 (skanda.5.77.61)

mama prasādāttaddevi dṛśyate liṁgamuttamam| etatte kathitaṁ samyaganyacchṛṇu varānane

Only by my grace, O Devi, is that supreme linga seen. This I have told you fully; now hear the next, O fair-faced one.
