Verse 2 (skanda.6.115.2)

kiṁ kulīnairguṇāḍhyairvā tejovidyāvicakṣaṇaiḥ trijāto'pi varaṁ so'pi svaṁ sthānaṁ yena coddhṛtam

"Of what use is high birth or abundance of virtue, of splendor or skill in learning, if even one of mixed lineage, through a boon, could restore his own place as he did?"

yastaṁ paśyati sadbhaktyā snāpayedviṣuve sadā na trijātaḥ kule tasya kathañcidapi jāyate

Whoever beholds him with true devotion and always bathes him at the equinox — in that person's lineage no one of mixed birth is ever born.

Verse 30 (skanda.6.115.30)

The sages said: "How was Brahma satisfied by that great-souled Trijata? And how was the section of ritual works differentiated by that great soul? Tell us all this in detail, for our curiosity is great."

Verse 31 (skanda.6.115.31)

"Therefore, O lord, grant to him unsurpassed knowledge of the Veda, by which special rites may come to exist here in this excellent city."

Verse 33 (skanda.6.115.33)

etasya ca gurutvaṁ ca prasādāttava padmaja yathā bhavati deveśa tayā nītirvidhīyatām

"And, O lotus-born, ordain such a means, O lord of gods, by which, through your grace, this man may attain the position of preceptor."

Verse 34 (skanda.6.115.34)

brahmā dadau tatastasya maṁtragrāmamanuttamam yena vijñāyate sarvaṁ vedārtho yajñakarma ca

Then Brahma gave to him the unsurpassed collection of mantras, by which the entire meaning of the Veda and the rites of sacrifice are known.

Verse 35 (skanda.6.115.35)

tataḥ provāca tānsarvānprahaṣṭenāṁtarātmanā eṣa vedārthasaṁpanno bhaviṣyati mahāyaśāḥ

Then, with a heart filled with joy, he said to all of them: "This man, endowed with the meaning of the Veda, shall become greatly renowned."

Verse 36 (skanda.6.115.36)

bhartṛyajña iti khyāto yajñakarmavicakṣaṇaḥ yadeva vakti yuṣmākaṁ kriyākāṁḍamaśaṁkitaiḥ

"Known as Bhartriyajna, skilled in the rites of sacrifice, whatever ritual injunction he declares to you, accept it without doubt."

Verse 37 (skanda.6.115.37)

tatkāryaṁ svargamokṣāya mama vākyātprabodhitaiḥ vedārthāneṣa sarveṣāṁ yuṣmākaṁ yojayiṣyati

"That is to be performed for the sake of heaven and liberation, as enjoined by my word; he shall establish for all of you the true meaning of the Vedas."

Verse 38 (skanda.6.115.38)

ye cānyeṣu ca deśeṣu sthāneṣu ca gatāḥ kvacit etatsthānaṁ parityajya satyametadvijottamāḥ

"O best of the twice-born, whoever, having left this place, has gone to other lands or other places — this too is true..."

Verse 39 (skanda.6.115.39)

vedasthāne ca buddhyaiṣa yatkarma pracariṣyati nānṛte vātha pāpe ca vāṇī cāsya cariṣyati

"...that whatever rite this man shall establish with wisdom, in the place of the Veda, his word shall never proceed toward falsehood or toward sin."

Verse 40 (skanda.6.115.40)

evamuktvā sa deveśo virarāma pitāmahaḥ bhartṛyajño'pi tāḥ sarvāścakre yajñakriyāḥ śubhāḥ

Having spoken thus, that lord of gods, the grandsire, fell silent; and Bhartriyajna too performed all those auspicious sacrificial rites.

Verse 41 (skanda.6.115.41)

brāhmaṇānāṁ hitārthāya śrutyarthaṁ tasya kevalam daśapramāṇāḥ saṁproktāḥ sarve te brāhmaṇottamāḥ

For the welfare of the brahmins, purely for the sake of scriptural meaning, all those best of brahmins were declared to be authoritative in ten respects.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.115.42)

catuḥṣaṣṭiṣu gotreṣu hyevaṁ te brāhmaṇottamāḥ tena tatra samānītāstrijātena mahātmanā

Thus, among the sixty-four gotras, those best of brahmins were brought together there by that great-souled Trijata.

Verse 43 (skanda.6.115.43)

teṣāmekatra jātāni daśapaṁcaśatāni ca sāmānyabhogamokṣāṇi tāni tena kṛtāni ca

The fifteen hundred families born among them together were made by him to have common enjoyment and a common path to liberation.

Verse 44 (skanda.6.115.44)

aṣṭaṣaṣṭivibhāgena pūrvamāyuvyayodbhavam tatrāsīdatha gotre ca puruṣāṇāṁ prasaṁkhyayā

Formerly, income and expenditure there existed by division among the original sixty-eight families, reckoned by the number of men in each gotra.

Verse 45 (skanda.6.115.45)

tataḥ prabhṛti sarveṣāṁ sāmānyena vyavasthitam trijātasya ca vākyena yena dūrādapi drutam

From then on, it was established in common for all, by the word of Trijata, by which, even from afar, swiftly...

Verse 46 (skanda.6.115.46)

samāgacchaṁti viprendrāḥ puravṛddhiḥ prajāyate na kaścidyāti saṁtyaktvā dausthyādanyatra ca dvijāḥ

...lords of brahmins would come there, and the growth of the city took place; and no brahmin, out of hardship, would leave and go elsewhere.

Verse 47 (skanda.6.115.47)

tatasteṣāṁ sutaiḥ pautrairnaptṛbhiśca sahasraśaḥ dauhitrairbhāgineyaiśca bhūyo bhūri prapūritam

Then, by their sons and grandsons, by their descendants in the thousands, and by their daughters' sons and sisters' sons, it became filled again and again, abundantly.

Verse 48 (skanda.6.115.48)

tatpuraṁ vṛddhimāyāti dūrvāṁkurairiva dvijāḥ kāṁḍātkāṁḍātprarohadbhiḥ saṁkhyāhīnairanekadhā

O brahmins, that city continued to grow, like durva-grass shoots sprouting innumerably from joint after joint, beyond counting.

Verse 49 (skanda.6.115.49)

sūta uvāca etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ gotrasaṁkhyānakaṁ śubham ṛṣīṇāṁ kīrtanaṁ cāpi sarvapātakanāśanam

Suta said: All this has been related to you — this auspicious reckoning of the gotras, and this recitation of the sages' names, which destroys every sin.

Verse 50 (skanda.6.115.50)

yaścaitatpaṭhate nityaṁ śṛṇuyādvā prabhaktitaḥ na syāttasya kulacchedaḥ kadācidapi bhūtale

Whoever constantly recites this, or hears it with great devotion, his lineage shall never be cut off on this earth.

Verse 51 (skanda.6.115.51)

tathā vimucyate pāpairājanmamaraṇodbhavaiḥ na paśyati viyogaṁ ca kadācitpriyasaṁbhavam

He is likewise freed from sins arising from birth to death, and he never experiences separation from his loved ones.
