The Greatness of Ambarevati Tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.6.116.1)
sūta uvāca tathānyāpi ca tatrāsti suvikhyātāmbarevatī devī kāmapradā puṁsāṁ bālakānāṁ sukhapradā
Suta said: And there, too, is another well-known goddess, Ambarevati, who grants the desires of men and bestows happiness on children.
Verse 2 (skanda.6.116.2)
yāṁ dṛṣṭvā pūjayitvā'tha caitrāṣṭamyāṁ viśeṣataḥ śuklāyāṁ nāpnuyānmartyaḥ kuṭumbavyasanaṁ kvacit
Beholding and worshipping her, especially on the eighth day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, a mortal never suffers misfortune in his family.
Verse 3 (skanda.6.116.3)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ kena vā sthāpitā tatra sā devī cāmbarevatī kiṁprabhāvā kiṁsvarūpā sūtaputra vadasva naḥ
The sages said: "By whom was that goddess Ambarevati established there? Of what power, of what form is she — O son of Suta, tell us."
Verse 4 (skanda.6.116.4)
sūta uvāca yadā śeṣeṇa saṁdiṣṭā nānānāgā viṣolbaṇāḥ purasyāsya vināśāya krodhasaṁraktalocanāḥ tadā tasya priyā sā ca putraśokena pīḍitā
Suta said: When various serpents, fiercely venomous, their eyes red with rage, had been commanded by Shesha for the destruction of this city, then his beloved, tormented by grief for her son...
Verse 5 (skanda.6.116.5)
svayamevāgrato gatvā bhakṣayāmāsa taṁ dvijam kuṭumbena samāyuktaṁ yena putro nipātitaḥ
...herself went ahead of all and devoured that brahmin, together with his family, by whom her son had been struck down.
Verse 6 (skanda.6.116.6)
atha tasya dvijendrasya bālavaidhavyasaṁyutā anujā''sīttapoyuktā brahmacaryakṛtakṣaṇā
Now, that lord of brahmins had a younger sister, widowed in her childhood, devoted to austerity, her days spent in celibate observance.
Verse 7 (skanda.6.116.7)
sā dṛṣṭvā bhakṣitaṁ sarvaṁ bhaṭṭikākhyā kuṭumbakam nāgapatnyā tataḥ prāha jalamādāya pāṇinā
She, named Bhattika, seeing her whole family devoured, then, taking water in her hand, spoke to the serpent-wife.
Verse 8 (skanda.6.116.8)
yasmāttvayā kuṭumbaṁ me nāśaṁ nītaṁ dvijihvake darśitaṁ ca mahadduḥkhaṁ mama bandhujanodbhavam
"Since, O forked-tongued one, you have brought destruction upon my family, and shown me this great grief born of the loss of my kinsmen..."
Verse 9 (skanda.6.116.9)
tathā tvamapi saṁprāpya mānuṣatvaṁ sugarhitam mānuṣaṁ patimāsādya putrapautrānavāpya ca
"...so may you too obtain a most despised human birth, and, having obtained a human husband and having gained sons and grandsons..."
Verse 10 (skanda.6.116.10)
teṣāṁ vināśajaṁ duḥkhaṁ mānuṣe tvamavāpsyasi nāgatve vartamānāyāḥ śāpaṁ te'muṁ dadāmyaham
"...you shall, in human form, suffer the grief born of their destruction. To you, still in your serpent state, I give this curse."
Verse 11 (skanda.6.116.11)
sā'pi śrutvā'tha taṁ śāpaṁ revatī bhaṭṭikodbhavam krodhena mahatāviṣṭā hyadaśattāṁ drutaṁ tataḥ
Revati too, hearing that curse issued by Bhattika, seized with great rage, then bit her at once.
Verse 12 (skanda.6.116.12)
atha tasyāstanuṁ prāpya nāgīdaṁṣṭrā viṣolbaṇā jagāma śatadhā nāśaṁ bibhide na tvacaṁ kvacit
But upon reaching her body, the serpent's venom-laden fang shattered into a hundred pieces and could not pierce her skin at all.
Verse 13 (skanda.6.116.13)
tataḥ sā lajjayāviṣṭā svaraktaplāvitānanā viṣaṇṇā niṣasādātha saṁniviṣṭā dharātale
Then she, overcome with shame, her face streaming with her own blood, sat down dejected upon the ground.
Verse 14 (skanda.6.116.14)
etasminnaṁtare nāgāstathānye ye samāgatāḥ revatīṁ te samālokya tathārūpāṁ bhayānvitām procuśca kimidaṁ devi tava vaktre rujāspadam
Meanwhile, other serpents who had gathered there, seeing Revati in that fearful state, said: "O goddess, what is this affliction upon your face?"
Verse 15 (skanda.6.116.15)
athavā kiṁ prabhāvo'yaṁ kasyacidraktasaṁpadaḥ
"Or, is this some power belonging to another, this abundance of blood?"
Verse 16 (skanda.6.116.16)
revatyuvāca yeyaṁ duṣṭatamā kāciddṛśyate duṣṭatāpasī asyā jāto vikāro'yaṁ mamāsye nāgasattamāḥ
Revati said: "O best of serpents, it is because of this most wicked ascetic woman seen here that this affliction has arisen in my mouth."
Verse 17 (skanda.6.116.17)
tasmādenāṁ mahāduṣṭāṁ bhaginīṁ tasya durmateḥ yena me nihataḥ putro dvijaputreṇa sāṁpratam
"Therefore this greatly wicked sister of that evil-minded brahmin's son, by whom my son was just now slain..."
Verse 18 (skanda.6.116.18)
bhakṣyatāṁ bhakṣyatāṁ śīghraṁ mama nāśāya saṁsthitām sāṁprataṁ manmukhe tena rudhiraṁ pannagottamāḥ
"O best of serpents, let her be devoured, be devoured at once — she who stands here for my ruin, by whom blood now flows in my mouth."
Verse 19 (skanda.6.116.19)
atha te pannagāḥ kruddhā dadaṁśustāṁ tapasvinīm samaṁ sarveṣu gātreṣu yathānyā prākṛtā striyam
Then those serpents, enraged, bit that female ascetic all over her body at once, as they would any ordinary woman.
Verse 20 (skanda.6.116.20)
tatasteṣāmapi tathā mukhāddaṁṣṭrā vinirgatāḥ rudhiraṁ ca tato jajñe śeṣapatnyā yathā tathā
Then, from their mouths too, in just the same way, their fangs shattered, and blood appeared, just as had happened to Shesha's wife.
Verse 21 (skanda.6.116.21)
atha tasyāḥ prabhāvaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā te nāgasattamāḥ śeṣā bhayaparitrastāḥ prajagmuśca diśo daśa
Then, seeing that power of hers, those best of serpents, terrified with fear, fled in all ten directions.
Verse 22 (skanda.6.116.22)
bhaṭṭikāpi jagāmāśu svāśramaṁ prati duḥkhitā bhayatrastaiḥ samaṁtācca vīkṣyamāṇā mahoragaiḥ
Bhattika too, grieving, quickly went toward her own hermitage, watched on every side by the great, terrified serpents.
Verse 23 (skanda.6.116.23)
tataḥ sarvaṁ samālokya tāpyamānaṁ mahoragaiḥ tatsthānaṁ svajanairmuktaṁ duḥkhena mahatānvitaiḥ
Then, seeing everything tormented by the great serpents, and that place abandoned by her own people, overwhelmed with great sorrow...
Verse 24 (skanda.6.116.24)
jagāmānyatra sā sādhvī samyagvrataparāyaṇā tīrthayātrāṁ prakurvāṇā paribabhrāma medinīm
...that virtuous woman, devoted wholly to her vows, went elsewhere, undertaking pilgrimage and wandering over the earth.
Verse 25 (skanda.6.116.25)
evamudvāsite sthāne tasminsā revatī tadā smṛtvā taṁ bhaṭṭikāśāpaṁ duḥkhena mahatā'nvitā
Thus, that place having become desolate, Revati then, remembering that curse of Bhattika, was overcome with great sorrow.
Verse 26 (skanda.6.116.26)
kathaṁ me mānuṣīgarbhe śāpādvāso bhaviṣyati mānuṣyeṇa ca kāṁtena prabhaviṣyati saṁgamaḥ
"How, by this curse, shall I come to dwell in a human womb, and how shall union with a human husband come to pass for me?"
Verse 27 (skanda.6.116.27)
naitatputrodbhavaṁ duḥkhaṁ tathā māṁ bādhate hṛdi yathedaṁ mānuṣe garbhe saṁvāso mānuṣaṁ prati
"This grief born of the loss of my son does not so trouble my heart, as does this — dwelling in a human womb, in union with a human husband."
Verse 28 (skanda.6.116.28)
tathā daśanasaṁtyaktā kathaṁ bhartuḥ svamānanam darśayiṣyāmi bhūyo'pi kṣate kṣāro'tra me sthitaḥ
"And with my fangs now lost, how shall I ever again show my own face to my husband? Here is salt rubbed into my wound."
Verse 29 (skanda.6.116.29)

tasmātparicariṣyāmi kṣetre'traiva vyavasthitā kiṁ kariṣyāmi saṁprāpya gṛhaṁ putraṁ vinākṛtā

tataścārādhayāmāsa samyakchraddhāsamanvitā aṁbikāṁ sā tadā devīṁ sthāpayitvā sureśvarīm
Then, with proper faith, she installed the goddess Ambika, the queen of the gods, and worshipped her.

Revati said: "O goddess, I was cursed formerly by a brahmin woman, for another reason — that you should obtain a human birth, becoming yourself a human woman."
Verse 34 (skanda.6.116.34)

"And likewise, O queen of the gods, my fangs have been taken from my mouth; how, then, might their restoration come about, through your power?"
