The Glory of Amareshvara

Chapter 144All chaptersChapter 146

Verse 1 (skanda.6.145.1)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ yattvayā kathitaṁ sūta na mṛtā sā kumārikā hatā raudraprahāraiśca kautukaṁ tanmahattaram

The sages said: O Suta, what you have told us — that that maiden, though struck with terrible blows, did not die — this is a matter of great wonder.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.145.2)

yato bhūyaḥ prasaṁjātā yoginī haratuṣṭidā yattvārthaṁ sarvamācakṣva kāraṇaṁ ca tadadbhutam

For she then became a yogini who brought delight to Hara; tell us in full that wondrous reason.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.145.3)

sūta uvāca sā praviṣṭā samaṁ tena supuṇyamamareśvaram māghakṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṁ na mṛtyuryatra vidyate

Suta said: She had entered, together with him, that most sacred Amareshvara, where, on the fourteenth of the dark half of Magha, death simply does not exist.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.145.4)

api caivāyuṣaḥ śeṣe kimutākālato dvijāḥ tena no nidhanaṁ prāptā hatāpi sudṛḍhaṁ tadā

O brahmins, if even one whose lifespan has run its course does not die there, how much less one struck before his time? For this very reason, though struck most forcefully, she did not meet death at that time.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.145.5)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ amareśvara ityukto yo devo hyamaratvadaḥ kena saṁsthāpito hyatra kiṁprabhāvaśca kīrtaya

The sages said: Tell us — by whom was that god known as Amareshvara, the giver of immortality, established here, and what is his power?

Verse 6 (skanda.6.145.6)

sūta uvāca aditiśca ditiścaiva prajāpatisute śubhe kṛte purātirūpāḍhye kaśyapena mahātmanā

Suta said: In the Krita age, the great soul Kashyapa took as his wives two auspicious, exceedingly beautiful daughters of Prajapati — Aditi and Diti.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.145.7)

adityāṁ vibudhā jātā diteścaiva tu daityapāḥ teṣāṁ sāpatnyabhāvena mahadvairamupasthitam atha daityaiḥ surā dhvastāḥ kṛtāścānye parāṅmukhāḥ anye tu bhayasaṁtrastā diśo jagmuḥ kṣatāṁgakāḥ

From Aditi were born the gods, and from Diti the lords of the daityas; because the two co-wives were rivals, a great enmity arose between them. Then the gods were shattered by the daityas — some were turned back, while others, terrified, with wounded limbs, fled in every direction.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.145.8)

tato duḥkhasamāyuktā devamātātra saṁsthitā tapaścakre divānaktaṁ śivadhyānaparāyaṇā

Then the mother of the gods, filled with sorrow, came and settled here, and, day and night devoted to meditation on Shiva, performed austerity.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.145.9)

evaṁ tasyāstapaḥsthāyā gate yugacatuṣṭaye nirbhidya dharaṇīpṛṣṭhaṁ śivaliṁgaṁ samutthitam

Thus, while she remained in austerity, four ages passed, and then, splitting open the surface of the earth, a Shiva-linga arose.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.145.10)

tatastasmai kṛtānandā stutvā stotraiḥ pṛthagvidhaiḥ aṣṭāṁgapraṇipātena namaścakre samāhitā

Then, filled with joy, she praised it with various hymns, and, single-mindedly, bowed to it with a prostration of eight limbs.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.145.11)

etasminnaṁtare vāṇī saṁjātā gaganāṁgaṇe śarīrarahitā divyā meghagambhīraniḥsvanā

Meanwhile, in the expanse of the sky, a divine, disembodied voice arose, its sound as deep as thunder.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.145.12)

varaṁ prārthaya kalyāṇi yaste hṛdi vyavasthitaḥ prasanno'haṁ pradāsyāmi tavādya śaśiśekharaḥ

The voice said: O auspicious one, ask for whatever boon lies in your heart; I, Shashishekhara, am pleased with you and shall grant it to you today.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.145.13)

aditiruvāca mama putrāḥ suraśreṣṭha hanyante yudhi dānavaiḥ tatkuruṣva gatāyāsānavadhyānraṇamūrdhani

Aditi said: O best of gods, my sons are being slain in battle by the danavas; therefore grant that they become invincible on the field of war, freed from all exhaustion.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.145.14)

śrībhagavānuvāca etalliṁgaṁ madīyaṁ ye spṛṣṭvā yāsyaṁti saṁyuge avadhyāste bhaviṣyanti yāvatsaṁvatsaraṁ śubhe

The Blessed Lord said: O auspicious one, whoever, having touched this my linga, goes into battle, shall remain invincible for a full year.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.145.15)

anyo'pi mānavo yo'tra caturdaśyāṁ samāhitaḥ māghamāsasya kṛṣṇāyāṁ prakariṣyati jāgaram

And any other man too who, on the fourteenth of the dark half of the month of Magha, keeps a devoted vigil here,

Verse 16 (skanda.6.145.16)

so'pi saṁvatsaraṁ yāvadbhaviṣyati nirāmayaḥ api mṛtyudine prāpte yo'sminnāyatane śubhe

he too shall remain free from disease for a year; and even one whose day of death has already come, if he — in this auspicious sanctuary —

Verse 17 (skanda.6.145.17)

āgamiṣyati taṁ mṛtyurdūrātparihariṣyati evamuktvātha sā vāṇī virarāma tataḥ param

shall come here, death shall turn away from him even from afar. Having said this, that voice thereafter fell silent.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.145.18)

aditiścāpi santuṣṭā hataśeṣānsutāṁstataḥ samānīyātha talliṁgaṁ teṣāmeva nyadarśayat kathayāmāsa tatsarvaṁ māhātmyaṁ yadvaroditam

Satisfied, Aditi then summoned her sons who had survived the slaughter, showed them that linga, and related to them all the greatness that had been declared in the boon.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.145.19)

tataste vibudhāḥ sarve talliṁgaṁ praṇipatya ca pratijagmustuṣṭiyuktāḥ śastrāṇyādāya tānprati

Thereafter all those gods, bowing to that linga, joyfully took up their weapons and set out once more against those danavas.

Verse 20 (skanda.6.145.20)

yatra te dānavā hṛṣṭāḥ sthitāḥ śakrapade śubhe svargabhogasamāyuktā nandanāṁtarvyavasthitāḥ

There, where those danavas sat delighted upon Indra's auspicious throne, enjoying the pleasures of heaven, established within the Nandana grove.

Verse 21 (skanda.6.145.21)

atha te dānavā dṛṣṭvā saṁprāptāṁstridivaukasaḥ sahasā saṁgarārthāya nānāśastradharānbahūn

Then those danavas, seeing the celestial dwellers suddenly arrived for battle in great numbers, bearing various weapons,

Verse 22 (skanda.6.145.22)

rathavaryānsamāruhya dhṛtaśastrāstravarmaṇaḥ yuddhārthaṁ sammukhā jagmurgarjamānā ghanā iva

mounted upon splendid chariots, arming themselves with weapons and armor, advanced to face them for battle, roaring like storm clouds.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.145.23)

tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ devānāṁ dānavaiḥ saha roṣapreritacittānāṁ mṛtyuṁ kṛtvā nivartanam

Then war broke out between the gods and the danavas; for those whose minds were driven by fury, death alone was the retreat.

Verse 24 (skanda.6.145.24)

tataste vibudhāḥ sarve haralabdhavarāstadā jaghnurdaityānasaṁkhyātācchitaiḥ śastrairanekadhā

Then all those gods, having obtained the boon from Hara, began to slay the innumerable daityas in many ways with sharp weapons.

Verse 25 (skanda.6.145.25)

hataśeṣāśca ye teṣāṁ te tyaktvā tridaśālayam palāyanakṛtotsāhāḥ praviṣṭā makarālayam

Those among them who survived the slaughter, abandoning the abode of the gods, intent upon flight, entered the ocean, abode of sea-monsters.

Verse 26 (skanda.6.145.26)

tataḥ śakraḥ samāpede svarājyaṁ dānavairhṛtam yadāsītpūrvakāle tatsamagraṁ hatakaṇṭakam

Then Indra regained his own kingdom, which had been seized by the danavas, whole again and free of all thorns, just as it had been before.

Verse 27 (skanda.6.145.27)

tataste dānavāḥ śeṣā jñātvā talliṁgasaṁbhavam māhātmyaṁ vṛṣanāthasya kṣetrasyāsyodbhavasya ca

Thereafter, those remaining danavas, having learned of the origin of that linga of the Bull-Lord, and the greatness of the arising of that field —

Verse 28 (skanda.6.145.28)

śukreṇa kathitaṁ sarvaṁ māghakṛṣṇe niśāgame caturdaśyāṁ śucirbhūtvā yastalliṁgaṁ prapūjayet kālāghrāto'pi na prāṇaiḥ sa pumāṁstyajyate kvacit

all this being told to them by Shukra — that whoever, having purified himself, worships that linga on the night of the fourteenth of dark Magha, even if approached by death, is never deprived of his life.

Verse 29 (skanda.6.145.29)

tasmādyūyaṁ samāsādya talliṁgaṁ taddine niśi pūjayadhvaṁ mahābhāgā yena syurmṛtyuvarjitāḥ

Shukra said: Therefore, O blessed ones, you too, going to that linga on the night of that day, should worship it, so that you may become free of death.

Verse 30 (skanda.6.145.30)

yāvatsaṁvatsarasyātaṁ satyametanmayoditam yathā te devasaṁghāśca tatprabhāvādasaṁśayam

This I have spoken truly — that by its power, just as those hosts of gods remained so, you too, without doubt, shall remain so until the end of the year.

Verse 31 (skanda.6.145.31)

atha taṁ dānavendrāṇāṁ maṁtraṁ jñātvā sureśvaraḥ nāradādbrāhmaṇaḥ putrādbhayatrastamanāstataḥ

Then, learning of that counsel of the lords of the danavas from the brahmin's son Narada, the lord of the gods became fearful in mind.

Verse 32 (skanda.6.145.32)

maṁtraṁ cakre samaṁ devaistatra devasya rakṣaṇe yathā syādudyamaḥ samyaktasminnahani sarvadā

He took counsel with the gods regarding the protection of that god-linga, so that on that day a proper effort might always be made.

Verse 33 (skanda.6.145.33)

koṭayastu trayastriṁśaddevānāṁ sāyudhāstataḥ rakṣārthaṁ tasya liṁgasya tasminkṣetre vyavasthitāḥ māghakṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṁ susaṁnaddhāḥ prahāriṇaḥ

Thereafter, thirty-three crore gods, armed, stationed themselves in that field to protect that linga, fully prepared and ready to strike, on the fourteenth of dark Magha.

Verse 34 (skanda.6.145.34)

atha te dānavā dṛṣṭvā tāndevāṁstatra saṁsthitān bhayasaṁtrastamanaso dudruvuḥ sarvato diśam

Then those danavas, seeing the gods stationed there, their minds terrified with fear, fled in every direction.

Verse 35 (skanda.6.145.35)

atha prabhāte vimale prodgate ravimaṇḍale bhūya eva surāḥ sarve maṁtraṁ cakruḥ parasparam

Then, when the clear dawn came and the orb of the sun rose, all the gods once more took counsel among themselves.

Verse 36 (skanda.6.145.36)

yadyetatkṣetramutsṛjya gamiṣyāmaḥ surālayam liṁgametatsamabhyetya pūjayiṣyaṁti dānavāḥ

They said: If we abandon this field and go back to the abode of the gods, the danavas will come and worship this linga,

Verse 37 (skanda.6.145.37)

tato'vadhyā bhaviṣyaṁti te'pi sarve yathā vayam tasmādatraiva tiṣṭhāmastrayastriṁśatpranāyakāḥ

and then they too shall become invincible, even as we are; therefore we thirty-three chief leaders shall remain here itself.

Verse 38 (skanda.6.145.38)

koṭīnāmeva sarveṣāṁ śeṣā gacchantu tatra ca sahasrākṣeṇa saṁyuktāḥ svarge svapararakṣakāḥ

Let the rest of all the crores of gods, together with Sahasraksha (Indra), go to heaven, to guard themselves and others there.

Verse 39 (skanda.6.145.39)

tato'ṣṭau vasavastatra dvādaśārkāstathaiva ca ekādaśāpare rudrā nāsatyau dvau ca sundarau

Then the eight Vasus, and likewise the twelve Adityas, and the eleven Rudras, and the two beautiful Nasatyas (Ashvins) —

Verse 40 (skanda.6.145.40)

ete talliṁgarakṣārthaṁ tasminkṣetre vyavasthitāḥ śeṣāḥ śakrasamāyuktāḥ prajagmustridaśālayam

these remained stationed in that field for the protection of that linga; the rest, together with Indra, went to the abode of the gods.

Verse 41 (skanda.6.145.41)

sūta uvāca evaṁ prabhāvaṁ liṁgaṁ tu devadevasya śūlinaḥ bhavadbhiḥ paripṛṣṭaṁ yadadityā sthāpitaṁ purā

Suta said: Thus that linga of the trident-bearing god of gods, about which you have asked me, is of such power — that linga which was established long ago by Aditi.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.145.42)

yasmānna vidyate mṛtyustena dṛṣṭena dehinām amarākhyaṁ tato liṁgaṁ vikhyātaṁ bhuvanatraye

Since death does not come to embodied beings who behold it, that linga became renowned throughout the three worlds by the name "Amara" (the deathless).

Verse 43 (skanda.6.145.43)

yasmindeśe'pi sā kanyā hatā tena dvijanmanā jābālinā sukruddhena tasya devasya maṁdire

And the place where that maiden was struck by that greatly enraged twice-born Jabali was within the very temple of that god.

Verse 44 (skanda.6.145.44)

āsīttatra dine kṛṣṇā māghamāsa caturdaśī tena no nidhanaṁ prāptā suhatā'pi tapasvinī

That day was the fourteenth of the dark half of Magha; for this reason that ascetic maiden, though struck most severely, did not meet death.

Verse 45 (skanda.6.145.45)

etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ tasya liṁgasya sambhavam māhātmyaṁ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāḥ sarvapātakanāśanam

O best of brahmins, this entire account of that linga's origin — a greatness that destroys all sins — has now been told to you.

Verse 46 (skanda.6.145.46)

yaścaitatpaṭhate bhaktyā tasya liṁgasya saṁnidhau apamṛtyubhayaṁ tasya kathaṁcinnaiva jāyate

Whoever reads this with devotion in the presence of that linga never in any way experiences fear of untimely death.

Verse 47 (skanda.6.145.47)

tasyāgre'sti śubhaṁ kuṇḍaṁ pūritaṁ svacchavāriṇā adityā nirmitaṁ devyā snānārthaṁ cātmanaḥ kṛte

In front of it lies an auspicious pool, filled with clear water, which was made by the goddess Aditi for her own bathing.

Verse 48 (skanda.6.145.48)

snānaṁ kṛtvā narastasminyastalliṁgaṁ prapaśyati karoti jāgaraṁ rātrau tasminneva dinedine so'dyāpi vatsaraṁ yāvannāpamṛtyumavāpnuyāt

Whoever bathes there and beholds that linga, and keeps vigil that same night, even today does not meet an untimely death for a full year.
