The Names of the Thirty-Three Gods

Verse 1 (skanda.6.146.1)

॥ ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ ॥ आदित्यानां च सर्वेषां वसुरुद्रादिकाश्विनाम् ॥ प्रत्येकशः समाचक्ष्व नामानि त्वं महामते

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ādityānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ vasurudrādikāśvinām pratyekaśaḥ samācakṣva nāmāni tvaṁ mahāmate

The sages said: O wise one, tell us, one by one, the names of all the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, and the Ashvins.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.146.2)

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ ॥ वृषध्वजश्च शर्वश्च मृगव्याधस्तृतीयकः ॥ अजैकपादहिर्बुध्न्यः पिनाकी षष्ठ एव हि

sūta uvāca vṛṣadhvajaśca śarvaśca mṛgavyādhastṛtīyakaḥ ajaikapādahirbudhnyaḥ pinākī ṣaṣṭha eva hi

Suta said: Vrishadhvaja, Sharva, and the third Mrigavyadha, Ajaikapada, Ahirbudhnya, and the sixth, Pinaki —

Verse 3 (skanda.6.146.3)

दहनश्चेश्वरश्चैव कपाली नवमस्तथा ॥ वृषाकपिस्तु दशमो रुद्रस्त्र्यंबक एव च

dahanaśceśvaraścaiva kapālī navamastathā vṛṣākapistu daśamo rudrastryaṁbaka eva ca

Dahana, Ishvara, and the ninth, Kapali, the tenth, Vrishakapi, and Rudra Tryambaka —

Verse 4 (skanda.6.146.4)

धुरो ध्रुवश्च सोमश्च मखश्चैवानिलोऽनलः ॥ प्रत्यूषश्च प्रभासश्च वसवोऽष्टौ प्रकीर्तिताः

dhuro dhruvaśca somaśca makhaścaivānilo'nalaḥ pratyūṣaśca prabhāsaśca vasavo'ṣṭau prakīrtitāḥ

Dhura, Dhruva, Soma, Makha, Anila, Anala, Pratyusha, and Prabhasa — these eight are declared to be the Vasus.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.146.5)

वरुणश्च तथा सूर्यो भानुः ख्यातश्च तापनः ॥ इंद्रश्चैवार्यमा चैव धाता चैव भगस्तथा

varuṇaśca tathā sūryo bhānuḥ khyātaśca tāpanaḥ iṁdraścaivāryamā caiva dhātā caiva bhagastathā

Varuna, and Surya, the renowned Bhanu, Tapana, Indra, Aryama, Dhata, and Bhaga —

Verse 6 (skanda.6.146.6)

गभस्तिर्धर्मराजश्च स्वर्णरेता दिवाकरः ॥ मित्रश्च वासुदेवश्च द्वादशैते च भास्कराः

gabhastirdharmarājaśca svarṇaretā divākaraḥ mitraśca vāsudevaśca dvādaśaite ca bhāskarāḥ

Gabhasti, Dharmaraja, Divakara of the golden seed, Mitra, and Vasudeva — these twelve are the Adityas.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.146.7)

नासत्यश्चैव दस्रश्च ख्यातावेतौ तथाश्विनौ ॥ देववैद्यौ महाभागौ त्वाष्ट्रीगर्भसमुद्भवौ

nāsatyaścaiva dasraśca khyātāvetau tathāśvinau devavaidyau mahābhāgau tvāṣṭrīgarbhasamudbhavau

Nasatya and Dasra — these two renowned ones are the Ashvins, the physicians of the gods, most blessed, born from the womb of Tvashtri's daughter.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.146.8)

त्रयस्त्रिंशत्समाख्याता एते ये सुरनायकाः ॥ क्षेत्रेऽत्रैवास्थिता नित्यं दानवानां वधाय च

trayastriṁśatsamākhyātā ete ye suranāyakāḥ kṣetre'traivāsthitā nityaṁ dānavānāṁ vadhāya ca

These thirty-three are declared to be the leaders of the gods, who remain permanently stationed in this very field for the slaying of danavas.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.146.9)

यस्तान्संपूजयेद्भक्त्या पुरुषः संयतेंद्रियः॥ यथोक्तदिवसे प्राप्ते नापमृत्युः प्रजायते

yastānsaṁpūjayedbhaktyā puruṣaḥ saṁyateṁdriyaḥ yathoktadivase prāpte nāpamṛtyuḥ prajāyate

Whatever man, with senses restrained, worships them with devotion on the appointed day, does not meet an untimely death.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.146.10)

अष्टम्यां च चतुर्दश्यां रुद्राः पूज्या विचक्षणैः ॥ तस्मिन्क्षेत्रे विशेषेण वांछद्भिः परमं पदम्

aṣṭamyāṁ ca caturdaśyāṁ rudrāḥ pūjyā vicakṣaṇaiḥ tasminkṣetre viśeṣeṇa vāṁchadbhiḥ paramaṁ padam

On the eighth and fourteenth days, the Rudras should be worshipped, especially in that field, by discerning men who desire the highest state.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.146.11)

दशम्यां वसवः पूज्यास्तथाष्टम्यां विशेषतः ॥ स्वर्गं समीहमानैश्च विलासैर्विविधैस्तथा

daśamyāṁ vasavaḥ pūjyāstathāṣṭamyāṁ viśeṣataḥ svargaṁ samīhamānaiśca vilāsairvividhaistathā

On the tenth day, and especially on the eighth as well, the Vasus should be worshipped by those desiring heaven and its various pleasures.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.146.12)

सप्तम्यामथ षष्ठ्यां च पूजनीया दिवाकराः ॥ ये वांछन्ति नराः सत्त्वं परिपंथिविवर्जितम्

saptamyāmatha ṣaṣṭhyāṁ ca pūjanīyā divākarāḥ ye vāṁchanti narāḥ sattvaṁ paripaṁthivivarjitam

On the seventh and sixth days, the Adityas should be worshipped by those men who desire strength free of any adversary.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.146.13)

देववैद्यौ तथा पूज्यौ द्वादश्यां व्याधिसंक्षयम् ॥ ये वांछन्ति सदा मर्त्या नीरुजा सम्भवंति ते

devavaidyau tathā pūjyau dvādaśyāṁ vyādhisaṁkṣayam ye vāṁchanti sadā martyā nīrujā sambhavaṁti te

On the twelfth day, the twin physicians of the gods should be worshipped by those who desire the destruction of disease; mortals who do so always become free from illness.
