Chapter 113All chaptersChapter 115

Verse 1 (skanda.7.114.1)

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi viṣṇuṃ pāpapraṇāśanam| vāmanasvāmināmānaṃ sarvapātakanāśanam||

Ishvara said: Thereafter, O great goddess, one should go to Vishnu, the destroyer of sin, known by the name Vamanasvamin, who destroys all sins.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.114.2)

puṣkarānnairṛte bhāge dhanurviśatibhiḥ smṛtam| yadā baddho balirdevi viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā||

It is remembered as situated twenty bow-lengths to the south-west of Pushkara. O goddess, when Bali was bound by the all-powerful Vishnu—

Verse 3 (skanda.7.114.3)

tadā tatra padaṃ nyastaṃ dakṣiṇaṃ viśvarūpiṇā| dvitīyaṃ meruśṛṃge tu tṛtīyaṃ gagane priye||

then the universal-formed one placed his right foot there; the second upon the peak of Meru, and the third in the sky, O beloved.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.114.4)

yāvadūrdhvaṃ cotkṣipati tāvadbhinnaṃ sudūrataḥ| pādāgreṇa tu brahmāṇḍaṃ niṣkrāntaṃ salilaṃ tataḥ||

As far up as he raised his foot, so far away was the shell of the cosmic egg pierced; then, through the tip of his foot, the primal waters flowed forth.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.114.5)

tataḥ svajānumātreṇa saṃprāptaṃ pṛthivītale| tato viṣṇupadī gaṃgā prasiddhimagamatkṣitau||

Then that water reached the surface of the earth, descending to the measure of his own knee; thence the river Vishnupadi, the Ganga, attained fame on earth.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.114.6)

pūrvaṃ sā puṣkare prāptā puṣkarātsā mahānadī| puṣkaraṃ kathyate vyoma puṣkaraṃ kathyate jalam| tena tatpuṣkaraṃ khyātaṃ saṃnidhānaṃ prajāpateḥ||

That great river first descended at Pushkara, and thence, from Pushkara, she flowed on; 'Pushkara' is a word for the sky, and 'Pushkara' is a word for water; therefore that abode of Prajapati became famed as Pushkara.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.114.7)

tatra snānaṃ naraḥ kṛtvā yaḥ paśyati hareḥ padam| sa yāti paramaṃ sthānaṃ yatra devo hariḥ svayam||

A man who, having bathed there, beholds the footprint of Hari, goes to that supreme abode where the god Hari himself dwells.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.114.8)

tatra piṃḍapradānena tṛptiḥ syātkoṭivārṣikī| pitṝṇāṃ ca varārohe hyetadāha hariḥ svayam||

There, by the offering of the rice-ball, the ancestors attain satisfaction for ten million years; O fair one, Hari himself has declared this.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.114.9)

atra gāthā purā gītā vasiṣṭhena maharṣiṇā| vāmanasvāminaṃ dṛṣṭvā tāṃ śṛṇuṣva samāhitā||

Here, in ancient times, a verse was sung by the great sage Vasishtha upon beholding Vamanasvamin; listen to it, O collected one.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.114.10)

snātvā tu puṣkare tīrthe dṛṣṭvā viṣṇupadaṃ tataḥ| api kṛtvā mahatpāpaṃ kimataḥ paritapyate||

'Having bathed at the tirtha of Pushkara, and then beheld the footprint of Vishnu, even one who has committed a great sin—why should he grieve further on that account?'

Verse 11 (skanda.7.114.11)

yastatropānahau dadyādbrāhmaṇāya yatavrataḥ| sa yānavaramārūḍho viṣṇuloke mahīyate||

Whoever, keeping his vow, gives a pair of sandals to a Brahmin there, mounted upon an excellent vehicle, is honoured in the world of Vishnu.
