The Glory of Bhutanatheshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.7.117.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि भूतनाथेश्वरं हरम्। कुण्डेश्वर्या ईशभागे धनुषां विंशकेऽन्तरे॥

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi bhūtanātheśvaraṃ haram| kuṇḍeśvaryā īśabhāge dhanuṣāṃ viṃśake'ntare||

Ishvara said: Thereafter, O great goddess, one should go to Hara as Bhutanatheshvara, situated in the north-eastern direction from Kundeshvari, at a distance of twenty bow-lengths.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.117.2)

कल्पलिंगं महादेवि ह्यनादिनिधनं स्थितम्। पूर्वं त्रेतायुगे देवि वीरभद्रेश्वरीति च॥

kalpaliṃgaṃ mahādevi hyanādinidhanaṃ sthitam| pūrvaṃ tretāyuge devi vīrabhadreśvarīti ca||

O great goddess, it is a kalpa-linga, existing without beginning or end; formerly, in the Treta age, O goddess, it was called Virabhadreshvari.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.117.3)

प्रख्यातं भुवि देवेशि कलौ भूतेश्वरं स्मृतम्। पुरा द्वापरसंधौ च तत्र भूतानि कोटिशः॥

prakhyātaṃ bhuvi deveśi kalau bhūteśvaraṃ smṛtam| purā dvāparasaṃdhau ca tatra bhūtāni koṭiśaḥ||

O goddess of gods, in the Kali age it became renowned on earth and is remembered as Bhuteshvara; formerly, at the junction of the Dvapara age, crores of beings there

Verse 4 (skanda.7.117.4)

संसिद्धिं परमां जग्मुस्तल्लिंगस्य प्रभावतः। तेन भूतेश्वरं नाम प्रख्यातं धरणीतले॥

saṃsiddhiṃ paramāṃ jagmustalliṃgasya prabhāvataḥ| tena bhūteśvaraṃ nāma prakhyātaṃ dharaṇītale||

attained supreme perfection through the power of that linga; therefore the name Bhuteshvara became renowned upon the earth.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.117.5)

तत्र कृष्णचतुर्द्दश्यां रात्रौ संपूज्य शंकरम्। दक्षिणां दिशमाश्रित्य अघोरं पूजयेत्तु यः॥

tatra kṛṣṇacaturddaśyāṃ rātrau saṃpūjya śaṃkaram| dakṣiṇāṃ diśamāśritya aghoraṃ pūjayettu yaḥ||

Whoever, on the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight, having worshipped Shankara there, and facing the southern direction, worships the Aghora aspect,

Verse 6 (skanda.7.117.6)

दृढं जितेन्द्रियो भूत्वा निर्भयो ध्यानसंयु तः। तस्यैव जायते सिद्धिर्या काचिद्भूतले स्थिता॥

dṛḍhaṃ jitendriyo bhūtvā nirbhayo dhyānasaṃyu taḥ| tasyaiva jāyate siddhiryā kācidbhūtale sthitā||

having become firmly self-controlled, fearless, and absorbed in meditation—to him alone comes whatever perfection exists upon the earth.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.117.7)

तिलहेमप्रदानं च पिण्डदानं च तत्र वै। पितॄनुद्दिश्य दद्याद्वै तेषां प्रेतत्वमुक्तये॥

tilahemapradānaṃ ca piṇḍadānaṃ ca tatra vai| pitṝnuddiśya dadyādvai teṣāṃ pretatvamuktaye||

There, one should give sesame and gold, and offer the rice-ball, dedicating it to the ancestors, for their release from the state of ghosts.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.117.8)

इति निगदितमेतद्भूतनाथेश्वरस्य प्रचुरकलिमलानां नाशनं पुण्यहेतुः। पठति च पुरुषो वा यः शृणोतीह भक्त्या सुरवरमहिमानं मुच्यते पातकौघैः॥

iti nigaditametadbhūtanātheśvarasya pracurakalimalānāṃ nāśanaṃ puṇyahetuḥ| paṭhati ca puruṣo vā yaḥ śṛṇotīha bhaktyā suravaramahimānaṃ mucyate pātakaughaiḥ||

Thus has this been declared, the glory of Bhutanatheshvara, destroyer of the abundant impurities of the Kali age and cause of merit. Whatever man reads or hears with devotion this glory of the excellent god is freed from the multitude of sins.
