Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 17
The Glory of Arkasthala and the Procedure of its Worship
Verse 1 (skanda.7.17.1)
īśvara uvāca| atha pūjāvidhānaṁ te kathayāmi yaśasvini| arkasthalasya devasya yathā pūjyo narottamaiḥ
Īśvara said: Now I shall tell you the procedure of worship, O glorious one — how the god Arkasthala is to be worshipped by excellent men.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.17.2)
sarveṣāmeva devānāmādirāditya ucyate| ādikarttā tvasau yasmādādityastena cocyate
Āditya is said to be the first among all the gods. Since he is the original creator, he is thus called Āditya.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.17.3)
nādityena vinā rātrirna divā na ca tarpaṇam| na dharmo vai na cādharmo na saṁtiṣṭhecarācaram
Without Āditya there is neither night nor day nor ancestral offering; neither dharma nor adharma exists, and the moving and unmoving world cannot remain established.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.17.4)
ādityaḥ pālayetsarvamādityaḥ sṛjate sadā| ādityaḥ saṁharetsarvaṁ tasmādeṣa trayīmayaḥ
Āditya sustains all things, Āditya ever creates, Āditya destroys all; therefore he is made of the threefold Veda.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.17.5)
ārādhanavidhiṁ tasya bhāskarasya mahātmanaḥ| kathayāmi mahādevi vedoktairmaṁtravistaraiḥ| taṁ śṛṇuṣva varārohe sarvapāpapraṇāśanam
The procedure of worship of that great-souled Bhāskara, O great Goddess, I shall tell together with the full Vedic mantras. Hear it, O well-formed one, a rite that destroys all sin.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.17.6)
mūrttisthaḥ pūjyate yena vidhānena maheśvari| dvādaśātmā yathā sūryastatte vakṣyāmyaśeṣataḥ
By what procedure the god established in an image is worshipped, O great Goddess, and how the Sun has a twelvefold nature — all this I shall tell you in full.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.17.7)
mukhaśuddhiṁ ca kṛtvā'dau snānaṁ kṛtvā viśeṣataḥ| vastraśuddhiṁ deha śuddhiṁ kṛtvā sūryaṁ spṛśettataḥ
Having first purified the mouth, then bathed with particular care, and purified the garments and the body, one should then touch the Sun.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.17.8)
dantakāṣṭhavidhānaṁ tu prathamaṁ kathayāmi te
First I shall tell you the procedure for the tooth-cleaning twig.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.17.9)
madhūke putralābhaḥ syādarke netrasukhaṁ priye
From the mahua twig comes the gaining of a son; from the arka twig comes comfort of the eyes, O beloved.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.17.10)
vaktṛtvaṁ vai badaryā ca bṛhatyā drurjjanāñjayet
From the jujube twig comes eloquence; the wood of the bṛhatī plant brings victory over people.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.17.11)
aiśvaryaṁ ca bhavedbilve khadire ca na saṁśayaḥ
From the bilva twig comes sovereignty, and likewise from khadira; of this there is no doubt.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.17.12)
rogakṣayaḥ kadambe tu arthalābho'timuktake
From the kadamba twig comes the decline of disease; from atimuktaka comes the gaining of wealth.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.17.13)
marutāṁ yāti sarvatra āṭarūṣakasaṁbhavaiḥ
Through twigs arising from the āṭarūṣaka plant, one attains everywhere the favor of the Maruts.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.17.14)
jātipradhānatāṁ jātāvaśvattho yacchate yaśaḥ
The jāti (jasmine) twig grants preeminence within one's own kind; the aśvattha (sacred fig) bestows fame.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.17.15)
śriyaṁ prāpnoti nikhilāṁ śirīṣasya niṣevaṇāt
By the use of the śirīṣa twig, one attains complete prosperity.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.17.16)
priyaṁguṁ sevamānasya saubhāgyaṁ paramaṁ bhavet| abhīpsitārthasiddhiḥ syānnityaṁ plakṣaniṣevaṇāt
By the use of the priyaṅgu twig, supreme good fortune results; by the constant use of the plakṣa (wave-leaved fig) twig, the fulfillment of one's desired aims occurs.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.17.17)
na pāṭitaṁ samaśnīyāddaṁtakāṣṭhaṁ na savraṇam| na cordddhaśuṣkaṁ vakraṁ vā naiva ca tvagvivarjjitam
One should not use a tooth-twig that is split, nor one with blemishes, nor one dried at the top, nor crooked, nor stripped of its bark.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.17.18)
vitastimātramaśnīyāddīrghaṁ hrasvaṁ ca varjayet| udaṅmukho vā prāṅmukhaḥ sukhāsīno'tha vāgyataḥ
One should use a twig the measure of a span, avoiding both the too-long and the too-short. Facing north or east, seated comfortably, and observing silence—
Verse 19 (skanda.7.17.19)
kāmaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ hṛdaye kṛtvā samabhimantrya ca| maṁtreṇānena matimānaśnīyāddantadhāvanam
Holding one's desired wish in the heart, and having consecrated it with a mantra, the wise man should use the tooth-twig with this mantra.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.17.20)
varaṁ dattvā'bhijānāsi kāmaṁ caiva vanaspate| siddhiṁ prayaccha me nityaṁ dantakāṣṭha namo'stu te
O lord of plants, granting a boon, you know my desire. Grant me perfection always; O tooth-twig, salutation to you.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.17.21)
trīnvārānparijapyaivaṁ bhakṣayeddaṁtadhāvanam| paścātprakṣālya tatkāṣṭhaṁ śucau deśe viniksipet
Reciting this thrice, one should use the tooth-twig. Afterward, having rinsed that twig, one should discard it in a clean place.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.17.22)
daṁtakāṣṭhena deveśi na jihvāṁ parimārjayet| pṛthakpṛthaktadā kāryaṁ yadīcchedvipulaṁ yaśaḥ
One should not clean the tongue with the same tooth-twig, O sovereign Goddess; if one desires abundant fame, this should be done separately.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.17.23)
aṁgulyā daṁtakāṣṭhaṁ ca pratyakṣaṁ lavaṇaṁ ca yat| mṛttikābhakṣaṇaṁ caiva tulyaṁ gomāṁsabhakṣaṇaiḥ
Cleaning the teeth with the finger, tasting salt directly, and eating clay — these are equal to eating the flesh of a cow.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.17.24)
mukhe paryuṣite nityaṁ bhavatyaprayato dvijaḥ| tasmācchuṣkamathārdraṁ vā bhakṣayeddaṁtadhāvanam
With a stale mouth, the twice-born remains ever impure. Therefore, whether dry or moist, one should always use the tooth-twig.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.17.25)
varjite divase caiva gaḍūṣāṁścaiva ṣoḍaśa| tattatpadmasugandhairvā mukhaśuddhiṁ ca kārayet
On a day when the tooth-twig is prohibited, one should rinse the mouth sixteen times, or purify the mouth with fragrant lotuses.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.17.26)
mukhaśuddhimakṛtvā yo bhāskaraṁ spṛśati dvijaḥ| trīṇi varṣasahasrāṇi sa kuṣṭhī jāyate naraḥ
Whatever twice-born touches the Sun without purifying the mouth, that man becomes a leper for three thousand years.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.17.27)
evaṁ vastrādi saṁśodhya tataḥ snānaṁ samācaret| śucau manorame sthāne saṁgṛhyāstreṇa mṛttikām
Having thus purified the garments and the rest, one should then bathe. In a pure and pleasant place, taking clay while reciting the weapon-mantra.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.17.28)
sānusvāro kārayuto hakāraḥ phaṭsamanvitaḥ| anenāstreṇa saṁgṛhya snānaṁ tatra samācaret
The syllable 'ha' joined with anusvāra and the vowel 'o', accompanied by 'phaṭ' — with this weapon-mantra one should take the clay and there perform the bath.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.17.29)
bhāgatrayaṁ tu saṁśuddhaṁ tṛṇapāṣāṇavarjitam| ekamastreṇa cālabhya tathānyaṁ bhāskareṇa tu
Three pure portions, free of grass and stones — touching one with the weapon-mantra, and another with the Bhāskara-mantra.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.17.30)
aṁgaiścaiva tṛtīyaṁ tu abhimaṁtrya sakṛtsakṛt| japtvāstreṇa kṣipeddikṣu nirvighnaṁ tu jalaṁ bhavet
and the third with the limb-mantras, each consecrated once. Having recited the weapon-mantra, one should scatter it in the directions, so that the water becomes free of obstruction.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.17.31)
sūryatīrtha dvitīyena tṛtīyena sakṛtsakṛt| guṁṭhayitvā tataḥ snāyādravitīrthena mānavaḥ
Enveloping the second and third portions once each with the Sun's ford-gesture, a person should then bathe using the ford-gesture of the Sun.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.17.32)
tūryaśaṁkha ninādena dhyātvā devaṁ divākaram| snātvā rājopacāreṇa punarācamya yatnataḥ
Meditating on the god Divākara to the sound of trumpet and conch, bathing with royal ceremony, and then sipping water carefully once more.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.17.33)
snānaṁ kṛtvā tato devi maṁtrarājena saṁyutam| harephau biṁdu lakṣmīśca tathā'nyo dīrghayā saha
Having bathed, O Goddess, then joined with the king of mantras — the syllables 'ha' and 'ra' together with the anusvāra dot and the long vowel.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.17.34)
mātrayā rephasaṁyukto hakāro biṁdunā saha| sakāraḥ savisargastu maṁtrarājo'yamucyate
The syllable 'ha' conjoined with 'r' and a vowel-length, together with the anusvāra, and the syllable 'sa' with visarga — this is called the king of mantras.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.17.35)
tatastu tarppayenmantrānsarvāṁstāṁstu karāgrajaiḥ| tulanādūrdhvato devānsavyena ca munīṁstathā| pitṝṁścaivāpasavyena hṛdbījena pratarpayet
Then one should offer libation to all the mantras with the fingertips. Above the waist, the gods with the right hand, and the sages likewise; the ancestors with the left hand, offering libation with the heart-seed mantra.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.17.36)
yadgītaṁ pravaraṁ loke akṣarāṇāṁ manīṣibhiḥ| ekonaviṁśaṁ mātrāyā akṣaraṁ tatprakīrttitam
That which is sung by the wise as foremost among syllables in the world is declared to be the syllable of nineteen mātrās.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.17.37)
evaṁ snātvā vidhānena saṁdhyāṁ vaṁdedvidhānataḥ| tato vidvānkṣipetpaścādbhāskarāyodakāṁjalim
Having thus duly bathed, one should perform the twilight worship duly. Then the wise man should offer a handful of water to Bhāskara.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.17.38)
japecca tryakṣaraṁ mantra ṣaṇmukhaṁ ca yadṛcchayā| mantrarājeti yaḥ pūrvaṁ tavākhyāto mayā priye
One should then recite the three-syllabled mantra, the six-syllabled mantra, and, at will, the mantra called the king of mantras that I told you of earlier, O beloved.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.17.39)
paścāttīrthena maṁtrāstu saṁhṛtya hṛdaye nyaset| maṁtrairātmānamekatra kṛtvā cārghaṁ pradāpayet
Afterward, gathering the mantras with the ford-gesture, one should place them in the heart. Having united the self through the mantras, one should present the oblation water.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.17.40)
raktacaṁdanagaṁdhaistu śuciḥsnāto mahītale| kṛtvā maṁḍalakaṁ vṛttamekacitto vyavasthitaḥ
Purified with the fragrance of red sandalwood, having bathed, one should draw a round maṇḍala upon the ground and remain established with a focused mind.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.17.41)
gṛhītvā karavīrāṇi tāmre saṁsthāpya bhājane| tilataṁdulasaṁyuktaṁ kuśagaṁdhodakena tu
Taking oleander flowers and placing them in a copper vessel, combined with sesame and rice, with kuśa grass and scented water.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.17.42)
raktacaṁdana dhūpena yuktamarghyopasādhitam| kṛtvā śirasi tatpātraṁ jānubhyāmavaniṁ gataḥ
having prepared the oblation combined with red sandalwood and incense, placing that vessel upon the head, and kneeling upon the ground.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.17.43)
mūlamantreṇa saṁyuktamarghyaṁ dadyācca bhānave| mucyate sarvapāpaistu yo hyevaṁ vinivedayet
one should offer the oblation, joined with the root-mantra, to Bhānu. Whoever presents it thus is freed from all sins.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.17.44)
yadyugādisahasreṇa vyatīpātaśatena ca| ayanānāṁ sahasreṇa yatphalaṁ jyeṣṭhapuṣkare| tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti sūryāyārghya nivedane
Whatever fruit is obtained from a thousand new-yuga rites, from a hundred vyatīpāta observances, from a thousand solstice observances, and at the eldest Puṣkara — that same fruit is obtained by offering oblation water to the Sun.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.17.45)
dīkṣāmantravihīno'pi bhaktyā saṁvatsareṇa tu| phalamargheṇa vai devi labhate nātra saṁśayaḥ
Even one without initiatory mantras, if he offers the oblation for a full year with devotion, obtains the fruit, O Goddess; of this there is no doubt.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.17.46)
yaḥ punardīkṣito vidvānvidhinārghyaṁ nivedayet| nāsau saṁbhavate bhūmau pralayaṁ yāti bhāskare
But the learned one who, being initiated, offers the oblation duly, is not born again upon the earth; he attains dissolution in Bhāskara.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.17.47)
iha janmani saubhāgyamāyurārogyasaṁpadam| acirāllabhate devi sabhāryaḥ sukhabhājanam
In this very birth he soon attains good fortune, long life, health, and prosperity, O Goddess, and, together with his wife, becomes a sharer in happiness.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.17.48)
evaṁ snānavidhiḥ proktaḥ sauraḥ saṁkṣepatastava| hitāya mānavendrāṇāṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanaḥ
Thus, in brief, the solar rite of bathing has been told to you, for the benefit of the foremost of men, destroying all sin.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.17.49)
athavā vedamārgeṇa kuryātsnānaṁ dvijottamaḥ| yadyevaṁ mantravistāre hyaśakto dīkṣayā vinā
Or else the excellent twice-born may perform the bath by the Vedic path, if he is unable, without initiation, to undertake this elaborate mantra procedure.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.17.50)
īśvara uvāca| atha pūjāvidhānaṁ te kathayāmi yaśasvini| vedamārgeṇa divyena brāhmaṇānāṁ hitāya vai
Īśvara said: Now I shall tell you the procedure of worship, O glorious one, by the divine Vedic path, for the benefit of brāhmaṇas.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.17.51)
evaṁ saṁbhṛtasaṁbhāraḥ puṣpādipraguṇīkṛtaḥ| tata āvāhayedbhānuṁ sthāpayetkarṇikopari
Thus, having gathered the ritual materials and prepared the flowers and the rest, one should then invoke Bhānu and establish him upon the pericarp of the maṇḍala.
Verse 52 (skanda.7.17.52)
upasthānaṁ tu vai kṛtvā maṁtreṇānena suvrate| udutyaṁ jātavedasamiti mantraḥ saṁparikīrtitaḥ
O virtuous one, having performed the salutation with this mantra — the mantra beginning 'udutyaṁ jātavedasam' (Ṛg Veda 1.50.1) is thus proclaimed.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.17.53)
agniṁ dūteti mantreṇa anenāvāhya bhāmini| ākṛṣṇena rajasā maṁtreṇānena vā'rcayet
O radiant one, having invoked with the mantra 'agniṁ dūtam,' one should then worship with the mantra 'ā kṛṣṇena rajasā' (Ṛg Veda 1.35.2).
Verse 54 (skanda.7.17.54)
haṁsaḥ śuciṣaditi maṁtreṇānena pūjayet| apatyeteti mantreṇa sūryaṁ devi prapūjayet
One should worship with the mantra 'haṁsaḥ śuciṣat' (Ṛg Veda 4.40.5). With the mantra 'apa tye tāyavaḥ,' O Goddess, one should duly worship the Sun.
Verse 55 (skanda.7.17.55)
adṛśramasya caitena sūryaṁ devi samarccayet| taraṇirviśvadarśeti anena satataṁ japam
With the mantra 'adṛkṣma kasya,' O Goddess, one should worship the Sun. With the mantra 'taraṇirviśvadarśataḥ' (Ṛg Veda 1.50.4), one should recite continuously.
Verse 56 (skanda.7.17.56)
citraṁ devānāmudeti bhadrāṁ devo sadārcayet| vibhūtimarccayennityaṁ yenā pāvaka cakṣasā
With 'citraṁ devānām udagād anīkam' one should ever worship the auspicious goddess. With 'yenā pāvakacakṣasā' one should always worship Vibhūti.
Verse 57 (skanda.7.17.57)
vidyāmepirajaspṛthvityanena vimalāṁ sadā| amoghāṁ pūjayennityaṁ maṁtreṇānena suvrate
With 'vi dyām eṣi rajas pṛthāḥ,' one should ever worship Vimalā. O virtuous one, with this same mantra one should always worship Amoghā.
Verse 58 (skanda.7.17.58)
sapta tvā harito'nena siddhidāṁ sarvakarmasu| vidyutāmarcayeddevaṁ sapta tvā haritena ca
With 'sapta tvā harito rathe,' one should worship her who grants success in all endeavors. With this same 'sapta tvā haritaḥ,' one should also worship the deity of lightning.
Verse 59 (skanda.7.17.59)
navamīṁ pūjayeddevīṁ satataṁ sarvatomukhīm| mantreṇānena vai devi udvayaṁtamitīha vai
O Goddess, with this mantra 'udvayaṁ tamasas pari,' one should ever worship the ninth goddess, she who faces every direction.
Verse 60 (skanda.7.17.60)

sadārcane ca dhūpena sāmīpyaṁ kurute raviḥ| pradadyātsakalaṁ kāmaṁ yadyadicchati mānavaḥ
Through incense in constant worship, the Sun grants his nearness. Whatever a man desires, he grants that wish in full.
Verse 178 (skanda.7.17.178)
tathaivāguru dhūpena nidhiṁ dadyādabhīpsitam| ārogyārthī dhanārthī ca nityadā guggalaṁ dahet
Likewise, with aloewood incense, he bestows the treasure sought. One who desires health and wealth should daily burn guggulu resin.
Verse 179 (skanda.7.17.179)
piṁḍātadhūpadānena sadā tuṣyati bhānumān| ārogyaṁ ca svayaṁ dadyātsaukhyaṁ ca paramaṁ bhavet
By the offering of piṇḍāta incense, the radiant Sun is ever pleased. He himself grants health, and supreme happiness results.
Verse 180 (skanda.7.17.180)
śrīvāsakasya dhūpena vāṇijyaṁ sakalaṁ labhet| rasaṁ sarjarasaṁ caiva dahato'rthāgamo bhavet
By the incense of śrīvāsa, all manner of trade prospers. By burning sāl resin, an influx of wealth results.
Verse 181 (skanda.7.17.181)
devadāruṁ ca dahato bhavatyannamathākṣayam| vilepanaṁ kuṁkumena sarvakāmaphalapradam
By burning deodar wood, imperishable food is obtained. Anointing with saffron grants the fruit of every desire.
Verse 182 (skanda.7.17.182)
iha loke sukhī bhūtvā akṣayaṁ svargamāpnuyāt| caṁdanasya pralepena śriyamāyuśca viṁdati
Being happy in this world, one attains imperishable heaven. By anointing with sandalwood, one obtains prosperity and long life.
Verse 183 (skanda.7.17.183)
raktacandanalepena sarvaṁ dadyāddivākaraḥ| api rogaśatairgrastaḥ kṣemamārogyamāpnuyāt
By anointing with red sandalwood, Divākara grants everything. Even one afflicted by a hundred diseases attains safety and health.
Verse 184 (skanda.7.17.184)
gatigaṁdhaṁ ca saubhāgyaṁ paramaṁ viṁdate naraḥ| kastūrikāmardanakairaiśvaryamatulaṁ labhet
Through pleasant fragrance, a man attains supreme good fortune. Through anointing with musk, incomparable sovereignty is obtained.
Verse 185 (skanda.7.17.185)
karpūrasaṁyutairgaṁdhaiḥ kṣmādhipādhipatirbhavet| catuḥsamena gaṁdhena sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt
Through fragrances combined with camphor, one becomes the overlord even of kings. Through the fourfold blended fragrance, all desires are obtained.
Verse 186 (skanda.7.17.186)
etatte kathitaṁ devi sūryamāhātmyamuttamam| savistaraṁ mayā khyātaṁ kimanyatparipṛcchasi
This, O Goddess, is the supreme glory of the Sun that has been told to you, declared by me in full detail. What else do you wish to ask?
Verse 187 (skanda.7.17.187)
devyuvāca| yadyevaṁ bhagavānsūryaḥ sarvatejasvināṁ varaḥ| sa kathaṁ grasyate deva saiṁhikeyena rāhuṇā
The Goddess said: If the blessed Sun is thus foremost among all radiant beings, then, O god, how is he seized by Rāhu, son of Siṁhikā?
Verse 188 (skanda.7.17.188)
īśvara uvāca| śṛṇu daivi pravakṣyāmi sarva pāpapraṇāśanam| kāraṇaṁ grahaṇasyāpi bhrāṁterviccedakārakam
Īśvara said: Listen, O Goddess, I shall tell that which destroys all sin — the cause even of the eclipse, which dispels delusion.
Verse 189 (skanda.7.17.189)
rāhurādityabiṁbasyādhastāttiṣṭhati bhāmini| amṛtārthī vimānastho yāvatsaṁsravate'mṛtam
O radiant one, Rāhu stands beneath the orb of Āditya, positioned in his celestial car, desiring the nectar, as long as the nectar continues to flow.
Verse 190 (skanda.7.17.190)
biṁbenāṁtarito devi ādityagrahaṇaṁ hi tat| na kaścidgrasituṁ śakta ādityo dahati dhruvam
When he is eclipsed by that orb, O Goddess, that is the eclipse of Āditya. No one is truly capable of swallowing him; Āditya surely burns anyone who tries.
Verse 191 (skanda.7.17.191)
brahmādayastamarcaṁti sa ādiḥ sarvanākinām| ādityadehajāḥ sarve tathānye devadānavāḥ
Brahmā and the others worship him; he is the origin of all the dwellers of heaven. All the gods and demons likewise are born from Āditya's very body.
Verse 192 (skanda.7.17.192)
ādikarttā svayaṁ yasmādādityastena cocyate| prabhāse saṁsthito devaḥ sarvapātakanāśanaḥ
Since he is himself the original creator, he is thus called Āditya. The god established in Prabhāsa is the destroyer of all sins.
Verse 193 (skanda.7.17.193)
bhuktimuktipradodevo vyādhiduṣkṛtanāśakṛt| tatra siddhāḥ purā devi lokapālā maharṣayaḥ
That god bestows both enjoyment and liberation, and destroys disease and evil deeds. There, in former time, O Goddess, the guardians of the world and great sages attained perfection.
Verse 194 (skanda.7.17.194)
siddhā vidyā dharā yakṣā gaṁdharvā munayastathā| dhanado'pi tathā bhīṣmo yayātirgālavastathā
Siddhas, Vidyādharas, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, sages, and likewise Kubera, Bhīṣma, Yayāti, and Gālava too.
Verse 195 (skanda.7.17.195)
sāmbaścaiva tathā devi parāṁ siddhimito gatāḥ| idaṁ rahasyaṁ deveśi sūryamāhātmyamuttamam
Sāmba too, O Goddess, attained supreme perfection from this very place. This secret, O sovereign Goddess, is the supreme glory of the Sun.
Verse 196 (skanda.7.17.196)
na deyaṁ duṣṭabuddhīnāṁ pāpināṁ ca viśeṣataḥ| na nāstike'śraddadhāne na krūraṁ vā kathaṁcana
This should not be given to those of evil intent, and especially not to sinners; not to the unbeliever, not to the faithless, and never to any cruel person.
Verse 197 (skanda.7.17.197)
imāṁ kathāmanubrūyāttathā nā'sūyake śive| idaṁ putrāya śiṣyāya dharmiṇe nyāyavartine
One should not tell this account to the envious either, O auspicious one. This should be told to a son, a disciple, one who is righteous, one who follows justice.
Verse 198 (skanda.7.17.198)
kathanīyaṁ mahābrahma sūryabhaktāya suvrate| arkasthalasya devasya māhātmyamidamuttamam
O virtuous one, this great brahman-secret should be told to a devotee of the Sun. This is the supreme glory of the god Arkasthala.
Verse 199 (skanda.7.17.199)
yaḥ śrāddhe śrāvayeddevi brāhmaṇānsaṁśitavratān| tasyānaṁtaṁ bhaveddevi yaddānaṁ puruṣasya vai
Whoever recites this to firm-vowed brāhmaṇas during a memorial rite, O Goddess, whatever gift that man makes becomes boundless.
Verse 200 (skanda.7.17.200)
yatredaṁ kīrttyate puṇyaṁ saṁpadastatra vai sadā| yātudhānā na hiṁsaṁti tacchrāddhaṁ bhayavihvalāḥ
Wherever this meritorious tale is recited, prosperity ever abides there. The rākṣasas, overwhelmed by fear, do not harm that memorial rite.
Verse 201 (skanda.7.17.201)
paṁktipāvanatāṁ yāṁti ye'pi vai paṁktidūṣakāḥ| sutavāñjanmavāṁśca syātsarvakāmamanoramaḥ
Even those who defile the sacred dining row attain purification of that row. A man becomes blessed with sons, of fulfilled birth, and delighted with every desire.
Verse 202 (skanda.7.17.202)
pravāsibhirbaṁdhuvargaiḥ saṁyujyeta sadā naraḥ| naṣṭaiḥ saṁyujyate cārthairaparaiścāpi ciṁtitaiḥ
A man is ever reunited with kinsmen who have gone abroad. He is reunited with lost wealth, and with other longed-for things as well.
Verse 203 (skanda.7.17.203)
rakṣyate yāginībhiśca priyaiśca na viyujyate| upaspṛśya śucirbhūtvā śṛṇuyādbrāhmaṇaḥ sadā| sarvānkāmāṁśca labhate nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
He is protected by yoginīs and is never separated from those dear to him. A brāhmaṇa, having touched water and become pure, should always listen to this; he obtains every desire — no further deliberation need be made on this.
Verse 204 (skanda.7.17.204)
vaiśyaḥ samṛddhimatulāṁ kṣatriyaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ| vaṇijaścāpi vāṇijyamakhaṇḍaṁ śatasaṁkhyayā| labheyuḥ kīrtanādasyāḥ sūryotpatterarānane
The vaiśya obtains incomparable prosperity, the kṣatriya becomes lord of the earth. The merchant too obtains unbroken trade a hundredfold, O fair-faced one, through the recitation of this account of the Sun's origin.
Verse 205 (skanda.7.17.205)
śūdrāścaivābhilaṣitānkāmānprāpsyaṁti bhāmini| apamṛtyubhayaṁ ghoraṁ mṛtyuto'pi mahābhayam
Śūdras too shall obtain their desired wishes, O radiant one. The dread fear of untimely death, a fear even greater than death itself—
Verse 206 (skanda.7.17.206)
naśyate nātra saṁdeho rājadvārakṛtaṁ ca yat| sarvakāmasamṛddhātmā sūryaloke mahīyate
is destroyed, without doubt, as is whatever trouble arises from dealings at the royal court. One whose self is enriched with every desire is glorified in the world of the Sun.
Verse 207 (skanda.7.17.207)
ityetatkathitaṁ devi māhātmyaṁ sūryadaivatam| arkasthalaprasaṁgena kimanyacchrotumicchasi
Thus, O Goddess, this glory of the Sun-deity has been told, in connection with Arkasthala. What else do you wish to hear?
Verse 208 (skanda.7.17.208)
sthānaṁ śāśvatamojasāṁ gatirapāṁ dīpo diśāmakṣayaḥ siddherdvāramapāvabhedi jagatāṁ sādhāraṇaṁ locanam| haimaṁ puṣkaramaṁtarikṣasaraso dīptaṁ divaḥ kuṇḍalaṁ kālonmānavibhāvanākṣatalayaṁ biṁbaṁ raveḥ pātu vaḥ
May that orb of the Sun protect you — the eternal abode of all luminous energies, the course of the waters, the imperishable lamp of the directions, the open door to perfection, the eye shared in common by all worlds, the golden lotus of the ocean of the sky, the blazing earring of heaven, the disc undiminished and unbroken through the measure and unfolding of time.
