The Glory of the Kalabhairava Cremation Ground

Verse 1 (skanda.7.201.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। तस्मिन्स्थाने महादेवि स्मशानं कालभैरवम्। ब्रह्मकुण्डं वरारोहे यावद्देवः कृतस्मरः

īśvara uvāca| tasminsthāne mahādevi smaśānaṁ kālabhairavam| brahmakuṇḍaṁ varārohe yāvaddevaḥ kṛtasmaraḥ

Ishvara said: In that place, O great Goddess, extending as far as where the god Kritasmara stands, lies the cremation ground called Kalabhairava, together with the Brahma-kunda, O fair one.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.201.2)

तत्र ये प्राणिनो दग्धा मृताः कालविपर्ययात्। ते सर्वे मुक्तिमायांति महापातकिनोऽपि वा

tatra ye prāṇino dagdhā mṛtāḥ kālaviparyayāt| te sarve muktimāyāṁti mahāpātakino'pi vā

Whatever living beings are cremated there, or die there in the course of time, all of them attain liberation, even if they be guilty of the gravest sins.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.201.3)

कृतस्मरान्महादेवि यावन्मंकीश्वरः स्थितः। महास्मशानं तद्देवि अपुनर्भवदायकम्

kṛtasmarānmahādevi yāvanmaṅkīśvaraḥ sthitaḥ| mahāsmaśānaṁ taddevi apunarbhavadāyakam

O great Goddess, from Kritasmara as far as where Mankishvara stands — that entire tract, O Goddess, is the great cremation ground granting freedom from rebirth.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.201.4)

तस्मिन्स्थाने वहेद्यत्र विषुवं प्राणिनां प्रिये। तत्रोषरं स्मृतं क्षेत्रं तन्मे प्रियतरं सदा

tasminsthāne vahedyatra viṣuvaṁ prāṇināṁ priye| tatroṣaraṁ smṛtaṁ kṣetraṁ tanme priyataraṁ sadā

O beloved, that place where the breath of living beings flows evenly through both nostrils is known as the 'Ushara' field; that is ever most dear to me.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.201.5)

कल्पांतेऽपि न मुंचामि अविमुक्तात्प्रियं मम

kalpāṁte'pi na muṁcāmi avimuktātpriyaṁ mama

That place, dearer to me even than Avimukta itself, I shall not abandon even at the end of the aeon.
