The Glory of Balarka

Verse 1 (skanda.7.286.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि बालार्कं पापनाशनम्। अगस्त्याश्रमतो देवि उत्तरे नातिदूरतः

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi bālārkaṁ pāpanāśanam| agastyāśramato devi uttare nātidūrataḥ

Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to Balarka, the destroyer of sin, O Goddess, not far to the north of Agastya's hermitage.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.286.2)

बाल एव तु यत्रार्कस्तपस्तेपे पुरा प्रिये। तेन बालार्क इत्येतन्नाम ख्यातं धरातले

bāla eva tu yatrārkastapastepe purā priye| tena bālārka ityetannāma khyātaṁ dharātale

Where the Sun, while still a child, formerly performed austerity, O beloved; for that reason this name Balarka (Child-sun) became renowned on the earth.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.286.3)

तं दृष्ट्वा रविवारेण न कुष्ठी जायते नरः। बालानां रोगजा पीडा न संभूयात्कदाचन

taṁ dṛṣṭvā ravivāreṇa na kuṣṭhī jāyate naraḥ| bālānāṁ rogajā pīḍā na saṁbhūyātkadācana

Beholding him on a Sunday, a man does not become afflicted with leprosy; and the suffering born of disease in children never occurs.
