The Glory of Baladitya: Vishvamitra's Accomplishment

Verse 1 (skanda.7.288.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि बालादित्यमिति श्रुतम्। अगत्स्यस्थानतः पूर्वे गव्यूतिद्वितयेन तु

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi bālādityamiti śrutam| agatsyasthānataḥ pūrve gavyūtidvitayena tu

Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the place known as Baladitya, two gavyutis to the east of Agastya's abode.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.288.2)

स्थानं सपाटिकानाम तस्यदक्षिणतः स्थितम्। गव्यूतिमात्रं देवेशि बालार्क इति विश्रुतम्

sthānaṁ sapāṭikānāma tasyadakṣiṇataḥ sthitam| gavyūtimātraṁ deveśi bālārka iti viśrutam

To its south is situated the place of the Sapatikas; one gavyuti further, O Goddess of gods, is the place renowned as Balarka.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.288.3)

यत्र चाराधिता विद्या विश्वामित्रेण धीमता। संस्थाप्य लिंगत्रितयं प्रतिष्ठाप्य तथा रविम्

yatra cārādhitā vidyā viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā| saṁsthāpya liṁgatritayaṁ pratiṣṭhāpya tathā ravim

Where the wise Vishvamitra worshipped his mantra-lore, having established a triad of lingas and having also installed the Sun there,

Verse 4 (skanda.7.288.4)

विद्यायाः साधनं चक्रे सिद्धिं सूर्यादवाप्तवान् । बालादित्येति तेनासौ ततः ख्यातिमगात्प्रभुः

vidyāyāḥ sādhanaṁ cakre siddhiṁ sūryādavāptavān | bālādityeti tenāsau tataḥ khyātimagātprabhuḥ

he performed the accomplishment of his mantra-lore and obtained perfection from the Sun; and by that, this lord thereafter attained renown under the name Baladitya.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.288.5)

तं दृष्ट्वा मानवो देवि भास्करपापतस्करम्। न दारिद्र्यमवाप्नोति यावज्जीवति मानवः

taṁ dṛṣṭvā mānavo devi bhāskarapāpataskaram| na dāridryamavāpnoti yāvajjīvati mānavaḥ

Beholding him, O Goddess, that Bhaskara who steals away sin, a man does not experience poverty for as long as he lives.
