Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 29

The Reason the Ocean's Water Became Undrinkable

Chapter 28All chaptersChapter 30

Verse 1 (skanda.7.29.1)

īśvara uvāca| agnitīrthaṁ tato gacchetsāgarasya taṭe śubhe| yatrā'sau vāḍavo muktaḥ sarasvatyā varānane

Ishvara said: Then one should go to that auspicious Agnitirtha on the shore of the ocean, O fair-faced one, where the vadava-fire was released by Sarasvati.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.29.2)

dakṣiṇe somanāthasya sarvapāpapraṇāśanam| tīrthaṁ trailokyavikhyātaṁ padmakaṁ nāma nāmataḥ

To the south of Somanatha is a tirtha that destroys all sins, renowned throughout the three worlds, named Padmaka.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.29.3)

dhanvaṁtaraśate proktaṁ someśājjalamadhyagam| kuṇḍaṁ pāpaharaṁ proktaṁ śatahastapramāṇataḥ| tatra snānaṁ prakurvīta vigāhya nidhimaṁbhasām

At a hundred bow-lengths from Someshvara, situated in the midst of the waters, a sin-removing pool a hundred cubits in measure is spoken of. One should bathe there, plunging into that reservoir of waters.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.29.4)

ādau kṛtvā tu vapanaṁ someśvarasamīpataḥ| śaṁkaraṁ manasā dhyāyankeśāṁstatra parityajet| samuttārya tataḥ keśānbhūyaḥ snānaṁ samācaret

First, having had one's head shaved near Someshvara while meditating upon Shankara in the mind, one should leave one's hair there. Then, having let the hair drift away, one should bathe again.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.29.5)

yatkiṁcitkurute pāpaṁ manuṣyo vṛttikarśitaḥ| tadeva parvatasute sarvaṁ keśeṣu tiṣṭhati

O Daughter of the Mountain, whatever sin a man, worn down by the struggle for livelihood, commits — all of it resides precisely in his hair.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.29.6)

tasmātsarvaprayatnena keśāṁstatra vinikṣipet| tadeva somanāthāgre kṛtvā tu dviguṇaṁ phalam

Therefore, with utmost effort, one should discard the hair there. Doing this before Somanatha yields a doubled fruit.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.29.7)

agnitīrthasamīpasthaṁ kaparddidvāramadhyagam| tatraiva dviguṇaṁ jñeyamanyatraikaguṇaṁ smṛtam

Only in the place situated near Agnitirtha, within the gateway of Kapardin, should the fruit be known as doubled; elsewhere it is prescribed as single.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.29.8)

kṣurakarma na śastaṁ syādyoṣitāṁ tu varānane| sabhartṛkāṇāṁ tatraiva vidhiṁ tāsāṁ śṛṇuṣva me

O fair-faced one, the shaving-rite is not prescribed for women whose husbands are living. Hear from me the procedure for them.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.29.9)

sarvānkeśānsamuddhṛtya cchedayedaṁguladvayam| tato devānvidhānena tarppayetpitṛdevatāḥ

Having gathered up all the hair, one should cut off a length of two fingers' breadth. Then, according to rule, one should offer tarpana to the gods and to the ancestor-deities.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.29.10)

muṇḍanaṁ copavāsaśca sarvatīrtheṣvayaṁ vidhiḥ

Tonsure and fasting — this is the rule at all tirthas.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.29.11)

gaṁgāyāṁ bhāskare kṣetre mātāpitrorgurau mṛte| ādhāne somapāne ca vapanaṁ saptasu smṛtam

At the Ganga, at the field of the Sun, at the death of mother, father, or teacher, at the conception-rite, and at the Soma-drinking sacrifice — tonsure is prescribed on these seven occasions.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.29.12)

aśvamedhasahasrāṇāṁ sahasraṁ yaḥ samācaret| nāsau tatphalamāpnoti vapanādyacca labhyate

Even one who performs a thousand times a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices does not obtain the fruit that is gained through tonsure.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.29.13)

vinā mantreṇa yastatra devi snānaṁ samācaret| samāpnoti kvacicchreyo muktvaikaṁ parvavāsaram

O Goddess, whoever bathes there without mantra obtains benefit only rarely, except on a parva (festival) day.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.29.14)

vinā maṁtraṁ vinā parva kṣurakarma vinā naraiḥ| kuśāgreṇāpi deveśi na spraṣṭavyo mahodadhiḥ

O Devesi, without mantra, without a parva-occasion, and without the shaving-rite, men should not touch the great ocean even with the tip of a blade of kusha grass.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.29.15)

evaṁ snātvā vidhānena dattvā'rghyaṁ ca mahodadhau| saṁpūjya puṣpagaṁdhaiśca vastraiḥ puṇyānulepanaiḥ

Having thus bathed according to rule, having offered arghya into the great ocean, and having worshipped with flowers and fragrance, garments and sacred unguents—

Verse 16 (skanda.7.29.16)

hiraṇmayaṁ yathāśaktyā nikṣipettatra kaṁkaṇam

—one should, according to one's ability, cast a golden bracelet there.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.29.17)

evaṁ kṛtvā vidhānaṁ tu sparśayellavaṇodadhim| mantreṇānena deveśi tataḥ sāṁnidhyatāṁ vrajet

Having thus performed the rite, one should [only then] touch the salt ocean. O Devesi, presence of the deity is attained by this very mantra.

Verse 18 (skanda.7.29.18)

oṁ namo viṣṇuguptāya viṣṇurūpāya te namaḥ| sāṁnidhye bhava deveśa sāgare lavaṇāmbhasi

"Om, salutation to Vishnugupta, salutation to you of Vishnu's form. O Lord of gods, be present here in the ocean, in the salt water."

Verse 19 (skanda.7.29.19)

agniśca reto mṛḍayā ca deho retodhā viṣṇuramṛtasya nābhiḥ| etadbruvanpārvati satyavākyaṁ tato'vagāhettu patiṁ nadīnām

"Agni is the seed, and the body comes through Mridani (Parvati); Vishnu is the bestower of the seed, the navel of immortal nectar." Having uttered this true saying, O Parvati, one should then plunge into the Lord of Rivers.

Verse 20 (skanda.7.29.20)

oṁ namo ratnagarbhāya mantreṇānena bhāmini| kaṁkaṇaṁ prakṣipettatra tataḥ snāyādyadṛcchayā

With the mantra "Om, salutation to the Jewel-Wombed One," O beautiful one, one should cast the bracelet there; then one should bathe at will.

Verse 21 (skanda.7.29.21)

tataśca tarpayeddevānmanuṣyāṁśca pitāmahān| tilamiśreṇa toyena samyakchraddhāsamanvitaḥ

Then, with water mixed with sesame seeds and with complete faith, one should offer tarpana to the gods, to men, and to the ancestors.

Verse 22 (skanda.7.29.22)

ājanmaśatasāhasraṁ yatpāpaṁ kurute naraḥ| sakṛtsnātvā vyapoheta sāgare lavaṇāmbhasi

Whatever sin a man commits across a hundred thousand births, he washes away by bathing just once in the ocean, in its salt water.

Verse 23 (skanda.7.29.23)

vṛṣabhastatra dātavyaḥ pravṛtte kṣurakarmaṇi| ātmaprakṛtidānaṁ ca pītavastraṁ tathaiva ca

When the shaving-rite has been performed, a bull should be given there, along with a gift representing one's own nature, and likewise a yellow garment.

Verse 24 (skanda.7.29.24)

anena vidhinā tatra samyaksnānaṁ samācaret| sparśayedvāḍavaṁ tejaścānyathā doṣabhāgbhavet

By this procedure one should first bathe there properly, and only then touch the radiance of the vadava-fire; otherwise one becomes subject to fault.

Verse 25 (skanda.7.29.25)

varaḥ śāpaśca tasyāyaṁ purā datto yathā dvijaiḥ

This is the boon and curse that were formerly given to it, the Ocean, by the brahmins.

Verse 26 (skanda.7.29.26)

devyuvāca| kutra kutra mahādeva jalasnānādviśudhyati| kimarthaṁ sāgare doṣaḥ prāpyate kautukaṁ mahat

The Goddess said: O Mahadeva, in which places does bathing in water purify a man? Why in particular is there a defect in the ocean? This is a matter of great curiosity to me.

Verse 27 (skanda.7.29.27)

yatra gaṁgādayaḥ sarvā nadyo viśrāṁtimāgatāḥ| yatra viṣṇuḥ svayaṁ śete yatra lakṣmīḥ svayaṁ sthitā

The ocean, where the Ganga and all rivers come to rest, where Vishnu himself reclines, where Lakshmi herself dwells—

Verse 28 (skanda.7.29.28)

kimarthaṁ varaśāpaṁ tu tasya dattaṁ dvijaiḥ purā| sarvaṁ vistarato brūhi mahānme saṁśayo'tra vai

—why then was a boon and a curse given to it by the brahmins in ancient times? Tell me all of this in detail; I have a great doubt about this.

Verse 29 (skanda.7.29.29)

īśvara uvāca| dīrghasatraṁ purā devi prārabdhaṁ surasattamaiḥ| prabhāsaṁ tīrthamāsādya samyakchraddhā samanvitaiḥ

Ishvara said: O Goddess, long ago the best of the gods, having arrived at the tirtha of Prabhasa and filled with proper faith, began a long sacrificial session.

Verse 30 (skanda.7.29.30)

tataḥ satrāvasāne tu dattvā dānamanekadhā| sarvasvaṁ brāhmaṇendrāṇāṁ prabhāsakṣetravāsinām

Then, at the conclusion of the sacrificial session, having given manifold gifts, they offered their entire possessions to the foremost brahmins dwelling in the Prabhasa-kshetra—

Verse 31 (skanda.7.29.31)

tāvadanye dvijāstatra dakṣiṇārthaṁ samāgatāḥ| deśīyāstatra vāstavyāḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ

—meanwhile, other resident brahmins of that region, dwelling there, arrived in their hundreds and thousands seeking sacrificial fees.

Verse 32 (skanda.7.29.32)

prārthanābhaṅgabhītāśca tato devāḥ savāsavāḥ| praṇaṣṭāstānsurāndṛṣṭvā brāhmaṇāścānuvavrajuḥ

Then the gods, together with Vasava, fearing that this entreaty could not be satisfied, vanished from there. Seeing those gods vanish, the brahmins pursued after them.

Verse 33 (skanda.7.29.33)

khecaratvaṁ purā devi hyāsīdagrabhuvāṁ mahat| tena yāṁti drutaṁ sarve yatra yatra surālayāḥ

O Goddess, in ancient times the first-born (the brahmins) possessed the great power of moving through the sky. By that power they swiftly reached wherever the abodes of the gods were.

Verse 34 (skanda.7.29.34)

evaṁ sarvatragāmitvaṁ teṣāṁ vīkṣya divaukasaḥ| praviṣṭāḥ sāgaraṁ bhītā ūcurvākyaṁ ca taṁ punaḥ

Seeing this power of theirs to go everywhere, the frightened gods entered the ocean and spoke these words to him once more—

Verse 35 (skanda.7.29.35)

śaraṇaṁ te vayaṁ prāptā brāhmaṇebhyo bhayaṁ gatāḥ| nāsti vittaṁ ca dānārthaṁ tasmādrakṣa mahodadhe

"We have come to you for refuge, having become frightened of the brahmins. We have no wealth left to give; therefore, O great ocean, protect us."

Verse 36 (skanda.7.29.36)

ekataḥ kratavaḥ sarve samāptavaradakṣiṇāḥ| ekato bhayabhītasya prāṇinaḥ prāṇarakṣaṇam| viśeṣataśca devānāṁ rakṣaṇaṁ bahupuṇyadam

On one side stood all the completed sacrifices with their boons and gifts fully given; on the other, the saving of a frightened being's life — and especially, the protection of the gods yields abundant merit. (Weighing this, the Ocean resolved to protect them.)

Verse 37 (skanda.7.29.37)

samudra uvāca| brāhmaṇebhyo na bhīḥ kāryā kathaṁcitsurasattamāḥ| ahaṁ vo rakṣayiṣyāmi praviśadhvaṁ mamodare

The Ocean said: "O best of gods, have no fear whatsoever of the brahmins. I shall protect you; enter into my belly."

Verse 38 (skanda.7.29.38)

tataste vibudhāḥ sarve tasya vākyena harṣitāḥ| praviṣṭā gahvarāṁ kukṣiṁ tasyaiva bhaya varjjitāḥ

Then all those gods, gladdened by his words, entered his deep, cavernous belly, freed from fear.

Verse 39 (skanda.7.29.39)

samudro'pi mahatkṛtvā nijarūpaṁ ca bhūriśaḥ| jalajāñjīvasaṁghātāndhṛtvā tīrasamīpataḥ

The Ocean too, having made his own form exceedingly vast, gathered together multitudes of aquatic creatures near the shore—

Verse 40 (skanda.7.29.40)

tataścakra upāyaṁ sa brāhmaṇānāṁ nipātane| matsyānāmāmiṣaṁ paktvā mahānnena ca gopitam

—then he devised a stratagem to stop the pursuing brahmins: he cooked the flesh of fish and concealed it within an abundance of other food.

Verse 41 (skanda.7.29.41)

athovāca dvijānsarvānpraṇipatya kṛtāṁjaliḥ| prasādaḥ kriyatāṁ viprā muhūrttaṁ mama sāṁpratam

Then, bowing down with folded hands, he said to all the brahmins: "O brahmins, show me favor for just this moment."

Verse 42 (skanda.7.29.42)

ātithyagrahaṇādeva dīnasya praṇatasya ca| yuṣmadarthaṁ mayā samyagetatpākaṁ samāvṛtam| kriyatāṁ bhojanaṁ bhūyo gaṁtavyamanu nākinām

"—by accepting the hospitality of this humble, bowed one — I have carefully prepared this meal for your sake. Partake of it, and then continue on in pursuit of the celestials."

Verse 43 (skanda.7.29.43)

atha te brāhmaṇā matvā samudraṁ śraddhayānvitam| bāḍhamityeva taṁ procya bubhujuḥ svarṇabhājane

Then those brahmins, considering the ocean to be sincere, said "very well" to him and ate from golden vessels.

Verse 44 (skanda.7.29.44)

na vyajānaṁta tanmāṁsaṁ guptaṁ svādu kṣudhārdditāḥ

Afflicted by hunger, they did not recognize that concealed, savory meat.

Verse 45 (skanda.7.29.45)

tatastṛptāśca te viprā brāhmaṇā vigatakṣudhaḥ| āśīrvādaṁ daduḥ sarve brāhmaṇāḥ śaṁsita vratāḥ

Then, satisfied and their hunger gone, all those brahmins, devout in their vows, gave him their blessing.

Verse 46 (skanda.7.29.46)

bhojanāṁto brāhmaṇānāṁ prāṇāṁtaḥ kṣatrajanmanām| āśīviṣāṇāṁ sarpāṇāṁ kopo jñeyo mṛtāvadhiḥ| prerayāmāsa devānvai gamyatāmityuvāca tān

The satisfaction of brahmins ends with feeding; that of kshatriyas, with the end of life; and the wrath of venomous serpents is known to end only in death. (Meanwhile) he urged the gods onward, telling them, "Now you may go."

Verse 47 (skanda.7.29.47)

tato devāḥ sagaṁdharvā gacchaṁtaḥ śīghragā viyat| gacchatastāṁstato dṛṣṭvā brāhmaṇāstatra vaṁditā

Then the gods, together with the Gandharvas, departed swiftly through the sky. Seeing them going, those brahmins there, who had just been honored—

Verse 48 (skanda.7.29.48)

dakṣiṇārthaṁ samutpetuḥ surānuddiśya pṛṣṭhataḥ

—rose up once more, chasing after the gods from behind, for the sake of dakshina.

Verse 49 (skanda.7.29.49)

tataḥ prapatitā bhūmau dvijāste sahasā punaḥ| abhakṣyabhakṣaṇātte vai brāhmaṇā māṁsabhakṣaṇāt

Then those brahmins suddenly fell back to the ground — because, through eating forbidden food, that is, through eating meat, those brahmins had lost their power of flight.

Verse 50 (skanda.7.29.50)

niṣkṛtiṁ tāṁ parijñāya samudrasya ruṣānvitāḥ| daduḥ śāpaṁ mahādevi raudraṁ raudravapurddharāḥ

Realizing this stratagem of the Ocean, and filled with rage, O Mahadevi, they assumed terrible, fierce forms and pronounced a curse.

Verse 51 (skanda.7.29.51)

yasmādabhakṣyaṁ māṁsaṁ vai brāhmaṇānāṁ paraṁ smṛtam| tvayopahṛtamasmākaṁ suguptaṁ bhakṣyasaṁyutam

"Since meat is declared utterly forbidden food for brahmins, and you served it to us, well hidden and mixed in with proper food—

Verse 52 (skanda.7.29.52)

ekataḥ sarvamāṁsāni matsyamāṁsaṁ tathaikataḥ| ekataḥ sarvapāpāni paradārāstathaikataḥ

—weigh all other kinds of meat on one side and fish-meat alone on the other (the worst of them); weigh all other sins on one side and violation of another's wife alone on the other (the gravest of them)—

Verse 53 (skanda.7.29.53)

evaṁ vayaṁ vijānanto yadi māṁsasya dūṣaṇam| tathāpi vaṁcitāḥ sarve aparīkṣitakāriṇaḥ

—thus, though we knew of the defilement caused by meat, we were all nonetheless deceived, having acted without first examining it.

Verse 54 (skanda.7.29.54)

yasmātpāpamate krūraṁ tvayā vai vañcitā vayam| māṁsasya bhakṣaṇāttasmādapeyastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi

"Since you, O cruel and evil-minded one, have deceived us through the eating of meat — therefore you shall become undrinkable."

Verse 55 (skanda.7.29.55)

aspṛśyastvaṁ dvijeṁdrāṇāmanyeṣāṁ ca nṛṇāṁ bhuvi| tavodakena ye marttyāḥ kariṣyaṁti kubuddhayaḥ

"You shall become untouchable to the foremost brahmins and to other men on earth. Those foolish mortals who perform rites with your water—

Verse 56 (skanda.7.29.56)

snānaṁ te narakaṁ ghoraṁ prayāsyaṁti na saṁśayaḥ| kṛtaghnānāṁ ca ye lokā ye lokāḥ pāpakarmiṇām

—by bathing in you, shall go without doubt to a terrible hell — the very worlds attained by the ungrateful and by evildoers—

Verse 57 (skanda.7.29.57)

tāṁstavodaka saṁsparśāllapsyaṁte mānavā bhuvi

—those same worlds shall men on earth obtain merely through contact with your water."

Verse 58 (skanda.7.29.58)

īśvara uvāca| evaṁ śaptaḥ samudrastairbrāhmaṇairvaravarṇini| tato varṣasahasraṁ tu hyaspṛśyaḥ saṁbabhūva ha

Ishvara said: O fair-complexioned one, thus cursed by those brahmins, the Ocean remained untouchable for a thousand years.

Verse 59 (skanda.7.29.59)

tatastrāsākulo bhūtvā sarvāṁstānidamabravīt| devakāryamidaṁ viprā mayā kṛtamabuddhinā

Then, overcome with terror, he said to all of them: "O brahmins, out of folly I performed this deed for the sake of the gods.

Verse 60 (skanda.7.29.60)

bubhūṣatā paraṁ dharmaṁ śaraṇāgatasaṁbhavam| kāmātkrodhādbhayāllobhādyastyajeccharaṇāgatam

—desiring to uphold the supreme dharma that arises from protecting one who has sought refuge. Whoever, overpowered by desire, anger, fear, or greed, abandons a refuge-seeker—

Verse 61 (skanda.7.29.61)

satyādvāpi sa vijñeyo mahāpātakakārakaḥ| yuṣmadbhītyā samāyātāḥ svargiṇaḥ śaraṇaṁ mama

—or does so even in the name of truth, is known as a committer of the greatest sin. Fearing you, the celestials came to me for refuge.

Verse 62 (skanda.7.29.62)

te mayā rakṣitāḥ samyagyathāśaktyā hyupāyataḥ| śoṣayiṣye'hamātmānaṁ yasmācchaptaḥ prakopataḥ

I protected them properly, to the best of my ability, through a stratagem. Now that I have been cursed in your anger, I shall dry myself up—

Verse 63 (skanda.7.29.63)

bhavadbhirnotsahe sthātuṁ janasparśavinākṛtaḥ| evamuktvā tato devi samudraḥ saritāṁpatiḥ| ātmānaṁ śoṣayāmāsa duḥkhena mahatā sthitaḥ

—for, deprived by you of the touch of people, I have no strength left to endure." Having said this, O Goddess, the Ocean, lord of rivers, sunk in great sorrow, began to dry himself up.

Verse 64 (skanda.7.29.64)

tato devagaṇāḥ sarve sthalākāraṁ mahārṇavam| śanaiḥśanaiḥ prapaśyaṁto bhayena mahatā'nvitāḥ

Then all the hosts of gods, watching the great ocean gradually take on the appearance of dry land, were seized with great fear.

Verse 65 (skanda.7.29.65)

ūcurgatvā tu lokeśaṁ devadevaṁ pitāmaham| asmatkṛte dvijaiḥ śaptaḥ sāgaro brāhmaṇottamaiḥ

They went to the Lord of the worlds, the God of gods, the Grandsire, and said: "For our sake, the foremost brahmins have cursed the Ocean.

Verse 66 (skanda.7.29.66)

sa śoṣayati cātmānaṁ duḥkhena mahatānvitaḥ| samudrājjalamādāya pravarṣaṁti balāhakāḥ

—overwhelmed with great sorrow, he is drying himself up. (Yet consider:) the clouds take water from the ocean and pour it down as rain—

Verse 67 (skanda.7.29.67)

tataḥ saṁjāyate sasyaṁ sasyādyajñā bhavaṁti ca| yajñaiḥ saṁjāyate tṛptiḥ sarveṣāṁ tridivaukasām

—from that, crops grow; from crops come sacrifices; and from sacrifices arises the satisfaction of all the dwellers of heaven.

Verse 68 (skanda.7.29.68)

evaṁ tasya vināśena nāśo'smākaṁ bhaviṣyati| tasmāttvaṁ rakṣa taṁ gatvā yathā śoṣaṁ na gacchati

Thus, by his destruction, our own destruction shall follow. Therefore, please go and protect him, so that he does not dry up.

Verse 69 (skanda.7.29.69)

yathā tuṣyaṁti viprāste tathā nītirvidhīyatām

Devise such a course of action by which those brahmins may become satisfied."

Verse 70 (skanda.7.29.70)

devānāṁ vacanādbrahmā gatvā sāgarasannidhau| samudrārthe yayāce tānbrāhmaṇānkṣetravāsinaḥ

At the word of the gods, Brahma went to the vicinity of the Ocean and pleaded with those brahmins dwelling in that sacred region, on the Ocean's behalf.

Verse 71 (skanda.7.29.71)

brahmovāca| prasādaḥ kriyatāmasya sāgarasya dvijottamāḥ| yathā pavitratāṁ yāti madvākyātkriyatāṁ tathā

Brahma said: "O foremost brahmins, show grace to this Ocean. Act, at my word, in such a way that he may attain purity once more.

Verse 72 (skanda.7.29.72)

pradāsyati sa yuṣmabhyaṁ ratnāni vividhāni ca

—He shall give you various kinds of jewels.

Verse 73 (skanda.7.29.73)

yūyaṁ bhaviṣyathātyaṁtaṁ bhūmidevā iti kṣitau| nāmnā madvacanānnūnaṁ satyametanmayoditam

—And by my word, you shall forever be known on earth by the name 'gods of the earth' (bhudevas). This declaration of mine shall surely prove true."

Verse 74 (skanda.7.29.74)

brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ| nānyathā kartumicchāmastava vākyaṁ jagatpate| na ca mithyā''tmano vākyaṁ pramāṇaṁ cātra vai bhavān

The brahmins said: "O Lord of the world, we do not wish to act contrary to your word; nor can our own word prove false. You yourself are the authority in this matter.

Verse 75 (skanda.7.29.75)

tanno vākyātsuraśreṣṭha hitaṁ vā yadi vāhitam| paraṁ syājjagatāṁ śreyaḥ sarveṣāṁ ca divaukasām| tathā kuru jagannātha asmākaṁ hitakāraṇam

—Therefore, O best of gods, whether it proves beneficial or harmful for us, let our word bring about the supreme welfare of all the worlds and of all the gods. O Lord of the universe, do whatever is beneficial for us."

Verse 76 (skanda.7.29.76)

athovāca nadīnāthaṁ brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ| mā śoṣaya tvamātmānaṁ hitaṁ vākyaṁ śṛṇuṣva me

Then Brahma, Grandsire of the worlds, said to the Lord of Rivers: "Do not dry yourself up; listen to my beneficial word.

Verse 77 (skanda.7.29.77)

nānyathā śakyate karttuṁ dvijānāṁ vacanaṁ hi tat| brāhmaṇāḥ kupitā nūnaṁ bhasmīkuryuḥ svatejasā

—That word of the brahmins cannot otherwise be undone. If angered, brahmins can surely reduce anyone to ashes by their own inner power.

Verse 78 (skanda.7.29.78)

devānkuryuradevāṁśca tasmāttānnaiva kopayet| yasmādeva tava sparśastridhā medhyo bhaviṣyati

—They can turn even gods into non-gods; therefore one must never provoke them. For this reason, your touch shall become sacred in three particular ways—

Verse 79 (skanda.7.29.79)

parvakāle ca saṁprāpte nadīnāṁ ca samāgame| setubaṁdhe tathā siṁdhau tīrtheṣvanyeṣu saṁyutaḥ

—when a sacred occasion arrives, at the confluence of rivers, at Setubandha, and likewise in the sea where joined with other tirthas—

Verse 80 (skanda.7.29.80)

ityevamādisarveṣu madhye'nyatra na karmaṇi| yatphalaṁ sarvatīrtheṣu sarvayajñeṣu yatphalam| tatphalaṁ tava toyasya sparśādeva bhaviṣyati

—on all such occasions, though not otherwise in ordinary activity. Whatever fruit exists in all the tirthas, whatever fruit exists in all sacrifices — that very fruit shall arise merely from the touch of your water.

Verse 81 (skanda.7.29.81)

gayāśrāddhe tu yatpuṇyaṁ gograhe maraṇena ca| tatphalaṁ tava toyasya sparśādeva bhaviṣyati

Whatever merit there is in performing a shraddha at Gaya, or in dying at the time of an eclipse — that very fruit shall arise merely from the touch of your water.

Verse 82 (skanda.7.29.82)

apeyastvaṁ tathā bhāvi svādamātreṇa kevalam| gaṁḍūṣamapi pītaṁ ca toyasyāśubhanāśanam

You shall remain undrinkable only with respect to ordinary taste; but even a single mouthful of your water, when drunk ritually, shall destroy inauspiciousness.

Verse 83 (skanda.7.29.83)

bhaviṣyati nṛṇāṁ loke tava saukhyavivarddhanam| pitṝṇāṁ tava toyena yaḥ kariṣyati tarpaṇam| pūrvoktena vidhānena tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu

It shall become, for men, an increase of happiness. Hear the meritorious fruit for one who performs tarpana for the ancestors with your water, according to the procedure stated before—

Verse 84 (skanda.7.29.84)

yāvattvaṁ tiṣṭhase loke yāvaccadrārkatārakāḥ| tavodakāmṛtaistṛptāstāvatsthāsyaṁti pūrvajāḥ

As long as you endure in the world, as long as the moon, sun, and stars endure — so long, satisfied by the nectar of your water, shall his ancestors remain content.

Verse 85 (skanda.7.29.85)

māghe māsi ca yaḥ snāyānnairaṁtaryeṇa bhāvitaḥ| pauṁḍarīkaphalaṁ tasya divasedivase bhavet

Whoever bathes continuously with devout intent during the month of Magha obtains the fruit of the Paundarika sacrifice day after day.

Verse 86 (skanda.7.29.86)

yātrāyāmathavānyatra parvakāle śaśigrahe| atra snāsyati yaḥ samyaksāgare lavaṇāṁbhasi| aśvamedhasahasrasya phalaṁ prāpsyati mānavaḥ

Whether during pilgrimage or otherwise, at a parva or at an eclipse, whoever bathes properly here in the salt ocean shall obtain the fruit of a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices.

Verse 87 (skanda.7.29.87)

śrīsomeśasamudrasya aṁtare ye mṛtā narāḥ| pāpino'pi gamiṣyaṁti svargaṁ nirdhūtakalmaṣāḥ

Men who die in the space between Shri Someshvara and the Ocean, even if they were sinners, shall go to heaven, their sins washed away.

Verse 88 (skanda.7.29.88)

evaṁ bhaviṣyati sadā tava madvacanādvibho| prayacchasva dvijeṁdrāṇāṁ ratnāni vividhāni ca

O mighty one, by my word this shall always remain so. Now give the foremost brahmins various kinds of jewels.

Verse 89 (skanda.7.29.89)

tena tuṣṭā varaṁ bhūyaḥ pradāsyaṁti tavepsitam

Pleased by that, they shall in turn grant you the boon you desire.

Verse 90 (skanda.7.29.90)

īśvara uvāca| pitāmahavacaḥ śrutvā bāḍhamityeva sāgaraḥ| brāhmaṇebhyaḥ suratnāni dadau śraddhā samanvitaḥ

Ishvara said: Having heard the Grandsire's words, the Ocean said "very well," and, filled with faith, gave the brahmins excellent jewels.

Verse 91 (skanda.7.29.91)

brāhmaṇairbrahmaṇo vākyamaśeṣaṁ samanuṣṭhitam| kṣurakarma tathā kṛtvā snānaṁ sarve'pi cakrire

The brahmins carried out Brahma's word in full; having performed the shaving-rite, all of them then bathed as well.

Verse 92 (skanda.7.29.92)

evaṁ pavitratāṁ prāptastīrthatvaṁ lava ṇodadhiḥ| tasya madhye mahādevi liṁgānāṁ paṁcakoṭayaḥ

Thus the salt ocean attained purity and the status of a sacred tirtha. O Mahadevi, within it there are fifty million lingas.

Verse 93 (skanda.7.29.93)

asminmanvaṁtare devi adṛśyāḥ sāgare kṛtāḥ| agnikuṇḍaṁ ca tatraiva tathānyatpadmakaṁ saraḥ

O Goddess, in this manvantara they have been made invisible within the ocean. There too is the Agnikunda, and likewise another lake named Padmaka.

Verse 94 (skanda.7.29.94)

madhye tu prāvṛtaṁ sarvamasminmanvaṁtare priye| cakramainākayormadhye diśi dakṣiṇamucyate

O beloved, in this manvantara everything in between lies concealed. It is said to be situated in the southern direction, between Chakra and Ainaka.

Verse 95 (skanda.7.29.95)

śātakumbhamaye kumbhe dhanuṣāyutavistṛte| tatra kuṁbhasya madhyastho vaḍavānalasaṁjñitaḥ

In a golden vessel ten thousand bow-lengths in extent, in the middle of that vessel dwells the one called Vadavanala.

Verse 96 (skanda.7.29.96)

sūcīvaktro mahākāyaḥ sa jalaṁ pibate sadā| etadaṁtaramāsādya agnitīrthaṁ pracakṣate

Needle-mouthed and vast of body, he continually drinks the water there. Reaching this inner region, people call it Agnitirtha.

Verse 97 (skanda.7.29.97)

tasya madhye mahāsāraṁ vāḍavaṁ yatra vai mukham| śrīsomeśāddakṣiṇato dhanvaṁtaraśatāvadhi| uttarānmānasātpūrvaṁ yāvadeva kṛtasmaram

In the midst of it lies that place of great essence, where the mouth of the vadava-fire is — extending south of Shri Someshvara up to a hundred bow-lengths, and from Manasa in the north eastward as far as Kritasmara.

Verse 98 (skanda.7.29.98)

etadgopyaṁ varārohe na deyaṁ yasya kasyacit| brahmaghnopi viśudhyeta śrutvaitannātra saṁśayaḥ

O fair-hipped one, this is a secret and should not be told to just anyone. Even the slayer of a brahmin would be purified merely by hearing this — there is no doubt of it.

Verse 99 (skanda.7.29.99)

evaṁ śāpo varo dattaḥ sāgarasya yathā dvijaiḥ| pūrvaṁ ruṣṭaistatastuṣṭaistatsarvaṁ kathitaṁ mayā

Thus, the curse and then the boon that were given to the Ocean by the brahmins — first angered, then pleased — all of this I have told you.
