The Glory of Naradaditya

Verse 1 (skanda.7.305.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि तस्याः पूर्वेण संस्थितम्। नारदादित्यनामानं जरादारिद्र्यनाशनम्

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi tasyāḥ pūrveṇa saṁsthitam| nāradādityanāmānaṁ jarādāridryanāśanam

Ishvara said: Then go, O great Goddess, to the east of her, to the one named Naradaditya, the destroyer of old age and poverty.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.305.2)

पश्चिमे मूलचंडीशाद्धनुषां च शतत्रये। आराध्य नारदो देवि भास्करं वारितस्करम्। जरा निर्मुक्तदेहस्तु तत्क्षणात्समपद्यत

paścime mūlacaṁḍīśāddhanuṣāṁ ca śatatraye| ārādhya nārado devi bhāskaraṁ vāritaskaram| jarā nirmuktadehastu tatkṣaṇātsamapadyata

To the west of Mula-Chandisha, at a distance of three hundred bow-lengths, O Goddess, having worshipped Bhaskara, who draws up the waters, Narada's body was that very instant freed from old age.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.305.3)

देव्युवाच। कथं जरामनुप्राप्तो नारदो मुनिपुंगवः। कथमाराधितः सूर्य एतन्मे वद शंकर

devyuvāca| kathaṁ jarāmanuprāpto nārado munipuṁgavaḥ| kathamārādhitaḥ sūrya etanme vada śaṁkara

The Goddess said: How did Narada, the foremost of sages, come to old age? And how was the Sun worshipped? Tell me this, O Shankara.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.305.4)

ईश्वर उवाच। यदा द्वारवतीं प्राप्तो नारदो मुनिपुंगवः। सर्वे दृष्टास्तदा तेन विष्णोः पुत्रा महाबलाः

īśvara uvāca| yadā dvāravatīṁ prāpto nārado munipuṁgavaḥ| sarve dṛṣṭāstadā tena viṣṇoḥ putrā mahābalāḥ

Ishvara said: When Narada, the foremost of sages, arrived at Dvaravati, he then beheld the mighty sons of Vishnu,

Verse 5 (skanda.7.305.5)

तद्राजकुलमध्ये तु क्रीडमाना परस्परम्। आयांतं नारदं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे विनयसंयुताः

tadrājakulamadhye tu krīḍamānā parasparam| āyāṁtaṁ nāradaṁ dṛṣṭvā sarve vinayasaṁyutāḥ

playing with one another in the midst of that royal family; and seeing Narada arriving, all of them, filled with courtesy,

Verse 6 (skanda.7.305.6)

नमश्चक्रुर्यथान्यायं विना सांबं त्वरान्विताः। अविनीतं तु तं दृष्ट्वा कथयामास नारदः

namaścakruryathānyāyaṁ vinā sāṁbaṁ tvarānvitāḥ| avinītaṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā kathayāmāsa nāradaḥ

duly paid homage—except Samba, who was impatient; seeing him discourteous, Narada spoke:

Verse 7 (skanda.7.305.7)

शरीरमदमत्तोऽसि यस्मात्सांब हरेः सुत। अचिरेणैव कालेन शापं प्राप्स्यसि दारुणम्

śarīramadamatto'si yasmātsāṁba hareḥ suta| acireṇaiva kālena śāpaṁ prāpsyasi dāruṇam

'Since you are intoxicated with pride of body, O Samba, son of Hari, in a short time you shall receive a dreadful curse.'

Verse 8 (skanda.7.305.8)

सांब उवाच। नमस्कारेण किं कार्यमृषीणां च जितात्मनाम्। आशीर्वादेन तेषां च तपोहानिः प्रजायते

sāṁba uvāca| namaskāreṇa kiṁ kāryamṛṣīṇāṁ ca jitātmanām| āśīrvādena teṣāṁ ca tapohāniḥ prajāyate

Samba said: 'What use is homage to sages who have conquered the self? By their blessing, only a loss of their own austerity results.'

Verse 9 (skanda.7.305.9)

मुनीनां यः स्वभावो हि त्वयि लेशो न नारद। विद्यते ब्रह्मणः पुत्र उच्यते किमतः परम्

munīnāṁ yaḥ svabhāvo hi tvayi leśo na nārada| vidyate brahmaṇaḥ putra ucyate kimataḥ param

'The nature that belongs to sages, O Narada, not a trace of it exists in you, O son of Brahma—what more is there to say?'

Verse 10 (skanda.7.305.10)

न कलत्रं न ते पुत्रा न च पौत्रप्रपौत्रकाः। न गृहं नैव च द्वारं न हि गावो न वत्सकाः

na kalatraṁ na te putrā na ca pautraprapautrakāḥ| na gṛhaṁ naiva ca dvāraṁ na hi gāvo na vatsakāḥ

'You have no wife, no sons, no grandsons or great-grandsons; no house, and no door; no cows, no calves.'

Verse 11 (skanda.7.305.11)

ब्रह्मणो मानसः पुत्रो ब्रह्मचर्ये व्यवस्थितः। अयुक्तं कुरुते नित्यं कस्मात्प्रकृतिरीदृशी

brahmaṇo mānasaḥ putro brahmacarye vyavasthitaḥ| ayuktaṁ kurute nityaṁ kasmātprakṛtirīdṛśī

'Mind-born son of Brahma, established in celibacy—why do you always do what is improper? What sort of nature is this?'

Verse 12 (skanda.7.305.12)

युद्धं विना न ते सौख्यं सौख्यं न कलहं विना। यादृशस्तादृशो वापि वाग्वादोऽपि सदा प्रियः

yuddhaṁ vinā na te saukhyaṁ saukhyaṁ na kalahaṁ vinā| yādṛśastādṛśo vāpi vāgvādo'pi sadā priyaḥ

'Without a fight you have no happiness, and no happiness without a quarrel; be it as it may, wrangling too is ever dear to you.'

Verse 13 (skanda.7.305.13)

स्नानं संध्या जपो होमस्तर्पणं पितृदेवयोः। नारदः कुरुते चान्यदन्यत्कुर्वंति ब्राह्मणाः

snānaṁ saṁdhyā japo homastarpaṇaṁ pitṛdevayoḥ| nāradaḥ kurute cānyadanyatkurvaṁti brāhmaṇāḥ

'Bathing, the twilight rites, recitation, fire-offering, libation to ancestors and gods—Narada does something else, while brahmins do other things.'

Verse 14 (skanda.7.305.14)

कौमारेण तु गर्विष्ठो यस्मान्मां शापयिष्यसि। तस्मात्त्वमपि विप्रर्षे जरायुक्तो भविष्यसि

kaumāreṇa tu garviṣṭho yasmānmāṁ śāpayiṣyasi| tasmāttvamapi viprarṣe jarāyukto bhaviṣyasi

'Since, puffed up with mere boyish pride, you shall curse me—therefore, O sage among brahmins, you too shall become afflicted with old age.'

Verse 15 (skanda.7.305.15)

एवं शप्तस्तदा देवि नारदो मुनिपुंगवः। एकान्ते निर्मले स्थाने कंटकास्थिविवर्जिते

evaṁ śaptastadā devi nārado munipuṁgavaḥ| ekānte nirmale sthāne kaṁṭakāsthivivarjite

Thus cursed, O Goddess, Narada, the foremost of sages, went to a solitary, pure place free of thorns and bones,

Verse 16 (skanda.7.305.16)

कृष्णाजिनपरिच्छिन्ने ह्युपविष्टो वरासने। ऋषितोया तटे रम्ये प्रतिष्ठाप्य महामुनिः

kṛṣṇājinaparicchinne hyupaviṣṭo varāsane| ṛṣitoyā taṭe ramye pratiṣṭhāpya mahāmuniḥ

and, seated on an excellent seat covered with black antelope skin, on the lovely bank of Rishitoya, that great sage installed—

Verse 17 (skanda.7.305.17)

सूर्यस्य प्रतिमां रम्यां सर्वदारिद्र्यनाशिनीम्। तुष्टाव विविधैः स्तोत्रैरादित्यं तिमिरापहम्

sūryasya pratimāṁ ramyāṁ sarvadāridryanāśinīm| tuṣṭāva vividhaiḥ stotrairādityaṁ timirāpaham

a lovely image of the Sun, the destroyer of all poverty, and praised Aditya, the dispeller of darkness, with various hymns:

Verse 18 (skanda.7.305.18)

नमस्त ऋक्स्वरूपाय साम्नां धामग ते नमः। ज्ञानैकरूपदेहाय निर्धूततमसे नमः

namasta ṛksvarūpāya sāmnāṁ dhāmaga te namaḥ| jñānaikarūpadehāya nirdhūtatamase namaḥ

'Homage to you, of the form of the Rigveda, who dwells in the abode of the Samans, homage; to the one whose body is the sole form of knowledge, whose darkness is dispelled, homage.'

Verse 19 (skanda.7.305.19)

शुद्धज्योतिःस्वरूपाय निर्मूर्तायामलात्मने। वरिष्ठाय वरेण्याय सर्वस्मै परमात्मने

śuddhajyotiḥsvarūpāya nirmūrtāyāmalātmane| variṣṭhāya vareṇyāya sarvasmai paramātmane

'To the one of pure light as form, formless, of stainless self; to the most excellent, most worthy of choice, the Supreme Self of all.'

Verse 20 (skanda.7.305.20)

नमोऽखिलजगद्व्यापिस्वरूपानंदमूर्तये। सर्वकारणपूताय निष्ठायै ज्ञानचेतसाम्

namo'khilajagadvyāpisvarūpānaṁdamūrtaye| sarvakāraṇapūtāya niṣṭhāyai jñānacetasām

'Homage to the one whose form pervades the entire universe, embodied bliss; to the one pure amid all causes, the resting-place of the minds of the wise.'

Verse 21 (skanda.7.305.21)

नमः सर्वस्वरूपाय प्रकाशालक्ष्यरूपिणे। भास्कराय नमस्तुभ्यं तथा दिनकृते नमः

namaḥ sarvasvarūpāya prakāśālakṣyarūpiṇe| bhāskarāya namastubhyaṁ tathā dinakṛte namaḥ

'Homage to the one whose form is all forms, whose nature is discerned through light; homage to you, O Bhaskara, and homage to you, the maker of the day.'

Verse 22 (skanda.7.305.22)

ईश्वर उवाच। एवं संस्तुवतस्तस्य पुरतस्तस्य चेतसा। प्रादुर्बभूव देवेशि जगच्चक्षुः सनातनः। उवाच परमं प्रीतो नारदं मुनिपुंगवम्

īśvara uvāca| evaṁ saṁstuvatastasya puratastasya cetasā| prādurbabhūva deveśi jagaccakṣuḥ sanātanaḥ| uvāca paramaṁ prīto nāradaṁ munipuṁgavam

Ishvara said: As he thus praised, before him, through the devotion of his heart, O Mistress of gods, the eternal Eye of the world appeared, and, most delighted, spoke to Narada, the foremost of sages:

Verse 23 (skanda.7.305.23)

सूर्य उवाच। वरं वरय विप्रर्षे यस्ते मनसि वर्तते। तुष्टोऽहं तव दास्यामि यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुर्लभम्

sūrya uvāca| varaṁ varaya viprarṣe yaste manasi vartate| tuṣṭo'haṁ tava dāsyāmi yadyapi syātsudurlabham

Surya said: 'Choose a boon, O sage among brahmins, whatever is in your mind; I am pleased—I shall grant it to you, even if it be exceedingly hard to obtain.'

Verse 24 (skanda.7.305.24)

नारद उवाच। कुमार वयसा युक्तो जरायुक्तकलेवरः। प्रसादात्स्यां हि ते देव यदि तुष्टो दिवाकर

nārada uvāca| kumāra vayasā yukto jarāyuktakalevaraḥ| prasādātsyāṁ hi te deva yadi tuṣṭo divākara

Narada said: 'By your grace, O god, if you are pleased, O Sun, let me become endowed with youthful age, my body freed from old age.'

Verse 25 (skanda.7.305.25)

सप्तम्यां रविवारेण यस्त्वां पश्यति मानवः। तस्य रोगभयं माऽस्तु प्रसादात्तिमिरापह

saptamyāṁ ravivāreṇa yastvāṁ paśyati mānavaḥ| tasya rogabhayaṁ mā'stu prasādāttimirāpaha

'Whatever man beholds you on Sunday, the seventh lunar day—let there be, by your grace, O dispeller of darkness, no fear of disease for him.'

Verse 26 (skanda.7.305.26)

ईश्वर उवाच। एवं भविष्यतीत्युक्त्वा ह्यन्तर्धानं गतो रविः। इत्येतत्कथितं देवि माहात्म्यं सकलं तव। नारदादित्यदेवस्य सर्वपातकनाशनम्

īśvara uvāca| evaṁ bhaviṣyatītyuktvā hyantardhānaṁ gato raviḥ| ityetatkathitaṁ devi māhātmyaṁ sakalaṁ tava| nāradādityadevasya sarvapātakanāśanam

Ishvara said: Having said, 'So it shall be,' the Sun vanished from sight. Thus, O Goddess, has this entire glory of the god Naradaditya, the destroyer of all sins, been told to you.
