The Glory of Aparanarayana

Verse 1 (skanda.7.307.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। सांबादित्याच्च पूर्वेण किञ्चिदाग्नेयसंस्थितः। अपरनारायणो नाम यस्मान्नास्ति परो भुवि

īśvara uvāca| sāṁbādityācca pūrveṇa kiñcidāgneyasaṁsthitaḥ| aparanārāyaṇo nāma yasmānnāsti paro bhuvi

Ishvara said: To the east of Sambaditya, situated a little toward the southeast, is the one named Aparanarayana, than whom there is none higher on earth.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.307.2)

स तु सांबस्य देवेशि सूर्यो विष्णुस्वरूपवान्। अपरां मूर्तिमास्थाय विष्णुरूपो वरं ददौ

sa tu sāṁbasya deveśi sūryo viṣṇusvarūpavān| aparāṁ mūrtimāsthāya viṣṇurūpo varaṁ dadau

O Goddess of the gods, that Surya of Samba possesses the form of Vishnu; assuming another form, in the shape of Vishnu he granted a boon.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.307.3)

तेनापरेति नाम्ना वै ख्यातो विष्णुः पुराऽभवत्। फाल्गुनामलपक्षे तु एकादश्यां विधानतः

tenāpareti nāmnā vai khyāto viṣṇuḥ purā'bhavat| phālgunāmalapakṣe tu ekādaśyāṁ vidhānataḥ

Thereby that Vishnu became known of old by the name 'Apara.' In the bright fortnight of Phalguna, on the Ekadashi day, according to the prescribed rule—

Verse 4 (skanda.7.307.4)

पूजयेत्पुण्डरीकाक्षं तत्र सूर्यस्वरूपिणम्। मुक्तो भवति पापेभ्यः सर्वकामैः समृध्यते

pūjayetpuṇḍarīkākṣaṁ tatra sūryasvarūpiṇam| mukto bhavati pāpebhyaḥ sarvakāmaiḥ samṛdhyate

—one should worship there the lotus-eyed one in his form as Surya. He becomes freed from sins and prospers, all his desires fulfilled.
