mounted on dogs, elephant-tusked in hand, girdled, their hands holding swords and shields, with the tumultuous din of hand-drums, their jangling footfall making the mountains resound, their forms terrifying with harsh cries, their hair curled and grey as kasha-grass,
Verse 16 (skanda.7.380.16)
naramāṁsavasāsārakavalavyagratālukān | janagaṁdhasamājñānabhavatīvravilocanān

Verse 18 (skanda.7.380.18)

svecchācārānnarānmarttyānvārayati nage tathā | hariṁ haraṁ nadīṁ devīṁ na paśyaṁti giriṁ yathā
Thus they restrain wayward, self-willed mortal men upon the mountain, so that they may not carelessly behold Hari, Hara, the goddess-river, and the mountain.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.380.20)

Having seen and recognised them, Vamana, meditating upon the god Maheshvara, offered praise: 'Victory to those brothers whose forms are marked for battle against wicked lords of daityas, whose valour equals that of five Indras -'
Verse 21 (skanda.7.380.21)

'-born from the mouth of Rudra, skilled ones, destroyers of Daksha's sacrifice, delighting the frightened submarine fire by consuming their own oblations,'
Verse 22 (skanda.7.380.22)
kuṅkumāgarukarpūraliptāṁgāḥ suvibhūṣitāḥ | madirāmodamattāṁganṛtyagītakarāḥ surāḥ
'-gods whose limbs are anointed with saffron, aguru, and camphor, richly adorned, whose limbs, intoxicated with the fragrance of wine, engage in dance and song,'
Verse 23 (skanda.7.380.23)
brahmāṁḍabhramaṇaśrāṁta svagaṁdhatrastasaṁcarāḥ | manojavāḥ kāmagamā kṣetrapālā jayaṁti te
'-weary from roaming the whole universe, their very scent making all else flee, swift as thought, going wherever they will - victory to these guardians of the field!'
Verse 24 (skanda.7.380.24)
ityādivacanāttuṣṭā dvijasyāgre svayaṁ sthitāḥ | ekapādo'smyahaṁ caiko dvitīyo giridāruṇaḥ
Pleased by these and other such words, they stood themselves before the brahmin: 'I am Ekapada; the second is Giridaruna,'
Verse 25 (skanda.7.380.25)
tṛtīyo meghanādastu siṁhanādaścaturthakaḥ | paṁcamaḥ kālamegho'haṁ kurmaḥ kiṁ te vadasva tat
'the third is Meghanada, the fourth Simhanada, and I, the fifth, am Kalamegha. What shall we do for you? Tell us that.'
Verse 26 (skanda.7.380.26)
dvija uvāca yadi tuṣṭā bhavaṁto me yadi deyo varo dhuvam | aho āpralayaṁ yāvatsthātavyaṁ matpratiṣṭhitaiḥ
The brahmin said: 'If you are pleased with me, and if a boon is surely to be given, then you, established by me, should remain here until the dissolution of the world.'
Verse 27 (skanda.7.380.27)
ekapādo giri taṭe praharṣātprathamaṁ sthitaḥ | vasatau vasatā tena girau ca giridāruṇaḥ
Ekapada, with great joy, took his place first on the mountain-slope; and dwelling there with him was Giridaruna.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.380.28)
pratiṣṭhitaḥ prasādyātha varado'sau svayaṁ sthitaḥ | ujjayaṁtagirermūrdhni meghanādaḥ svayaṁ yayau
Thus established and gratified, that boon-giver took his own place there; and Meghanada himself went to the summit of Mount Ujjayanta.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.380.29)
bhavānīśaṁkaraṁ ramyaṁ siṁhanādastathāviśat | svayaṁ vastrāpathenaiva bhavasyāgre nirūpitaḥ
Simhanada entered the lovely shrine of Bhavani-Shankara; he was established, by the very glory of Vastrapatha, before Bhava himself.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.380.30)
svaṇarekhānadītīre kālamegho mahābalaḥ | sarvalokopakārārthaṁ tīrthaṁ saṁsthāpitaṁ purā
The mighty Kalamegha took his place on the bank of the river Svarnarekha; thus of old was this sacred ford established for the benefit of all the worlds.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.380.31)
vāmanena svayaṁ gatvā kṣetrapālāstu pūjitāḥ | purā yugādau rājeṁdra sarve devāḥ samāgatāḥ
By Vamana himself, going there in person, the guardians of the field were worshipped. Long ago, at the start of the age, O king of kings, all the gods gathered together -
Verse 32 (skanda.7.380.32)
surāṣṭradeśe saṁprāptāḥ puṇye raivatake girau | rakṣārthaṁ sarvalokānāṁ vadhārthaṁ devavairiṇām
arriving in the land of Saurashtra, at the sacred Mount Raivataka, for the protection of all worlds and for the destruction of the enemies of the gods.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.380.33)
viṣṇoḥ kaṇṭhe tadā muktā jayamālā surottamaiḥ | dāmodareti vikhyātaṁ dattaṁ nāmottamaṁ hareḥ
Then a garland of victory was placed round Vishnu's neck by the foremost of gods, and the supreme name 'Damodara' was given to Hari, by which he became renowned.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.380.34)
tatrādau kārtike śukle vāsare viṣṇuvallabhe | upoṣya sahite devaistattīrthaṁ viṣṇunā kṛtam
There, first, in the bright fortnight of Kartika, on a day dear to Vishnu, fasting together with the gods, that sacred ford was established by Vishnu.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.380.35)
sarvatīrthamayī puṇyā svarṇarekhā nadī sthitā | bhuktimuktipradaṁ puṇyaṁ viṣṇulokapradāyakam
The sacred river Svarnarekha abides there, embodying all sacred fords, bestowing both enjoyment and liberation, holy, and granting the world of Vishnu.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.380.36)
kṣālanaṁ sarvapāpānāṁ rogadāridryanāśanam | dāmodaraṁ raivatake paramānaṁdadāyakam
Bathing there washes away all sins, destroys disease and poverty; Damodara at Raivataka grants supreme bliss.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.380.37)
ye paśyaṁti vimānaiste nīyaṁte viṣṇumaṁdire | na gṛhe kārtikaḥ kāryo viśeṣādbhīṣmapaṁcakam
Those who behold him are borne away by celestial chariots to Vishnu's abode. The month of Kartika should not be observed at home, especially not the Bhishma-Panchaka period.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.380.38)
paṁcakāddvādaśī śreṣṭhā kāryā dāmodare jale | prātaḥsnānaṁ prakarttavyaṁ saṁprāpte kārtike janaiḥ
Of the Bhishma-Panchaka, the twelfth tithi is best, to be observed in the waters of Damodara. When Kartika arrives, people should perform their morning bath there.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.380.39)
māsopavāsaḥ karttavyo yatibhirbrahmacāribhiḥ | satībhirvidhavābhiśca muktisthānamabhīpsubhiḥ
A month-long fast should be undertaken by ascetics and celibate students, by chaste wives and widows, and by all who desire the place of liberation,
Verse 40 (skanda.7.380.40)
ekabhaktena naktena tathaivāyācitena ca | upavāsevana kṛcchreṇa śākāhāreṇa vā punaḥ
eating but once a day, or only at night, or on unsolicited food, or again by fasting, by penance, or by a diet of vegetables alone.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.380.41)
saṁsevyaḥ kārttike viṣṇurdīpadānaparairnaraiḥ | brahmacaryaparairmāso nīyate yadi mānavaiḥ
Vishnu is to be worshipped throughout Kartika by men devoted to the offering of lamps; if the month is passed by men devoted to celibacy -
Verse 42 (skanda.7.380.42)
tadā viṣṇupure vāsaḥ kriyate viṣṇunā saha | pañcopavāsāḥ karttavyāḥ saṁprāpte bhīṣmapaṁcake
then dwelling in Vishnu's own city, together with Vishnu, is granted to them. Five fasts should be undertaken when the Bhishma-Panchaka period arrives -
Verse 43 (skanda.7.380.43)
ekādaśīṁ samārabhya paṁcamī pūrṇimādinam | tadetatpaṁcakaṁ proktaṁ sarvapāpaharaṁ nṛṇām
beginning with the eleventh tithi, ending on the fifth day after the full moon. This Panchaka is declared to remove all sins from men.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.380.44)
sarveṣāmapi māsānāṁ pañcakātkārtikādapi | ekādaśī kārtikasya puṇyā dāmodare kṛtā
Among all the months, even more than the Panchaka itself, the eleventh tithi of Kartika, observed at Damodara, is most meritorious.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.380.45)
miṣṭānnaṁ kārtike deyaṁ haviṣyaṁ saghṛtaplutam | suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ vastraṁ toyamannaṁ phalāni ca
In Kartika, sweet food should be given, sacred food drenched in ghee, gold, silver, clothing, water, grain, and fruit -
Verse 46 (skanda.7.380.46)
māsāṁte vividhaṁ deyaṁ gaustilāḥ kusumāni ca | sarvadāneṣu yatpuṇyaṁ sarva tīrtheṣu yatphalam
at month's end, various gifts should be given - a cow, sesame, and flowers. Whatever merit lies in all forms of giving, whatever fruit lies in all sacred fords -
Verse 47 (skanda.7.380.47)
aśvamedhādibhiryajñairgayāyāṁ piṁḍadasya yat | tatphalaṁ jāyate nṝṇāṁ dṛṣṭe dāmodare nṛpa
whatever fruit comes from sacrifices such as the Ashvamedha, or from offering rice-balls at Gaya - that same fruit comes to men, O king, from the mere sight of Damodara.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.380.48)
ekādaśyāṁ kṛtasnāno deva pūjāparo bhavet | snāpya pañcāmṛtenaiva tatastīrthodakena ca
On the eleventh tithi, having bathed, one should be devoted to the worship of the god - bathing the image with the five nectars, and then with water from the sacred ford,
Verse 49 (skanda.7.380.49)
kuṁkumāgaruśrīkhaṁḍakarpūrodakamiśritaiḥ | pūjayitvā tataḥ puṣpaiḥ śatapatraiḥ sugaṁ dhibhiḥ
with waters mixed with saffron, aguru, sandalwood, and camphor; then worshipping with fragrant hundred-petalled lotuses -
Verse 50 (skanda.7.380.50)
mālatīkusumaiḥ śubhrairbahubhistulasīdalaiḥ | vastrayajñopavītaṁ ca dattvā dhūpaṁ pradhūpayet
with white jasmine flowers and many tulasi leaves; and giving cloth and a sacred thread, incense should be offered.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.380.51)
dīpaṁ dadyāddhṛtenaiva tailenāpi ghṛtaṁ vinā | naivedyaṁ vividhaṁ deyaṁ phalaṁ tāṁbūlameva ca
A lamp should be lit with ghee, or, lacking ghee, with oil; various food-offerings should be given, along with fruit and betel.
Verse 52 (skanda.7.380.52)
prāsādapūjā karttavyā dhvajadānādinā nṛpa | gauḥ savatsā tato deyā saṁsārārṇavatāriṇī
The worship of the temple should be performed, O king, with the gift of a banner and the like; then a cow with her calf, who ferries one across the ocean of worldly existence, should be given.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.380.53)
tataḥ pradakṣiṇāṁ kṛtvā gītavāditranisvanaiḥ | vedapāṭhapurāṇaiśca vyākhyādivyakathādibhiḥ
Then, having performed circumambulation, with the resounding of song and instruments, with Vedic recitation and the Puranas, with expositions and divine tales -
Verse 54 (skanda.7.380.54)
devāgre jāgaraḥ kāryo dīpo deyoṁ'tibhūmiṣu | saptadhānyamayāḥ sapta parvatā dīpasaṁyutāḥ
a night-vigil should be kept before the god; lamps should be offered on the boundary grounds; seven mounds made of the seven grains, each fitted with a lamp -
Verse 55 (skanda.7.380.55)
phalatāṁbūlapakvānnapūritāḥ parikalpitāḥ | vidvadbhiḥ śrotriyaiḥ śrāṁtairbrāhmaṇairgṛhamedhibhiḥ
filled with fruit, betel, and cooked food, should be arranged by learned, Vedic-scholar brahmin householders, though weary,
Verse 56 (skanda.7.380.56)
strībhiśca naraśārdūla śrotavyā vaiṣṇavī kathā | evaṁ jāgaraṇaṁ kāryaṁ rāgakrodhavivarjitaiḥ
and by women too, O tiger among men, tales of Vishnu should be heard. Thus should the vigil be kept, free of passion and anger.
