Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 406
The Greatness of Shrimata
Verse 1 (skanda.7.406.1)
pulastya uvāca tato gacchennṛpaśreṣṭha śrīmātāṁ devavaṁditām sarvakāmapradāṁ nṛṇāmihaloke paratra ca
Pulastya said: Then, O best of kings, one should go to Shrimata, worshipped by the gods, bestower of all desires upon men in this world and the next.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.406.2)
yā ca sarvamayī śaktiryayā vyāptamidaṁ jagat sā tasminparvate sākṣātsvayaṁ vāsamarocayat
That Shakti who is all-pervading, by whom this universe is pervaded — she herself was pleased to dwell on that very mountain.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.406.3)
purā devayuge rājā kaliṁgonāma dānavaḥ jarāmaraṇahīnosau devānāṁ ca bhayaṁkaraḥ
Formerly, in the Deva-yuga, there was a demon-king named Kalinga, free from old age and death, a terror to the gods.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.406.4)
tena sarvamidaṁ vyāptaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram balaprabhāvataḥ svargo jitastena surādhipaḥ brahmalokamanuprāpto devaiḥ sarvaiḥ samanvitaḥ
By him this entire triple world, with its moving and unmoving beings, was pervaded; by the power of his strength he conquered heaven, so the lord of the gods went, together with all the gods, to Brahmaloka.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.406.5)
tena daityena sarve'pi trāsitāḥ suramānavāḥ kaliṁgonāma daityaḥ sa svayamindro babhūva ha
By that demon, all gods and men were terrified. The demon named Kalinga himself became Indra.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.406.6)
vasavo marutaḥ sādhyā viśvedevāḥ surarṣayaḥ tena sarve kṛtā daityā yathāyogyaṁ narādhipa
The Vasus, Maruts, Sadhyas, Vishvedevas, and divine sages — all these he turned into demons, each according to his rank, O lord of men.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.406.7)
yajñabhāgānsvayaṁ sarve bubhujuste ca dānavāḥ tapo'rthe ca tato devā gatāḥ sarve'rbudācalam
All those demons themselves enjoyed the sacrificial portions. Then, for the sake of austerity, all the gods went to Mount Arbuda.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.406.8)
adyāpi devatākhātaṁ trailokye khyātimāgatam tatra vrataparāḥ sarve patramūlaphalāśinaḥ
Even today the 'Devata-khata' (Gods' pit) is famed throughout the three worlds; there, all devoted to vows, subsisting on leaves, roots and fruits,
Verse 9 (skanda.7.406.9)
avyaktāḥ paramatrāsāddhyāyaṁtaste ca saṁsthitāḥ paṁcāgnisādhakāḥ kecittatra vrataparāyaṇāḥ
unmanifest, out of extreme fear, they remained there, meditating. Some were practitioners of the five-fire penance, devoted to vows there.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.406.10)
ekāhārā nirāhārā vāyubhakṣāstathā pare anye māsopavāsāśca cāndrāyaṇaparāyaṇāḥ
Some ate once a day, some fasted entirely, others subsisted on air alone; others observed the month-long fast, devoted to the Chandrayana vow.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.406.11)
kṛcchrasāṁtapane niṣṭhā mahāpārākiṇaḥ pare aṁbubhakṣā vāyubhakṣāḥ phenapāścoṣmapāḥ pare
Others were fixed in the Krichchhra and Santapana penances; others were Maha-parakins; some subsisted on water, some on air, some on foam, others on heat.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.406.12)
japahomaparāścānye dhyānāsaktāstathā pare balinaivadyadānaiśca gaṁdhadhūpairnarādhipa
Others were devoted to japa and homa; others were absorbed in meditation. With offerings, food-gifts, sandal-paste and incense, O lord of men,
Verse 13 (skanda.7.406.13)
pūjayaṁtaḥ parāṁ śaktiṁ devīṁ svakāryahetave evaṁ teṣāṁ vratasthānāṁ tapasā bhāvitātmanām vimuktirabhavadrājansarveṣāṁ karmabandhanāt
worshipping the Supreme Shakti, the Goddess, for the accomplishment of their own purpose. Thus, for those established in their vows, with minds purified by austerity, O king, liberation came to them all from the bondage of karma.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.406.14)
tataḥ pūrṇe sahasrāṁte varṣāṇāṁ nṛpasattama devī pratyakṣatāṁ prāptā kanyakārūpadhāriṇī
O best of kings, then when a full thousand years had passed, the Goddess became manifest, taking the form of a maiden.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.406.15)
pūrvaṁ jātā mahārāja dhūmamūrtirbhayāvahā tato jvālā tataḥ kanyā śuklavāso'nulepanā dṛṣṭvā tāṁ tuṣṭuvurdevāḥ kṛtāṁjaliputāstataḥ
First, O great king, she appeared in a terrifying form of smoke; then flame; then a maiden clothed in white and anointed. Seeing her, the gods, with joined palms, praised her:
Verse 16 (skanda.7.406.16)
namo'stu sarvage devi namaste sarvapūjite kāmage'ciṁtye namaste tridaśāśraye
Salutation to you, O Goddess who pervades all! Salutation to you, worshipped by all! O you who move at will, inconceivable, salutation to you, refuge of the thirty gods!
Verse 17 (skanda.7.406.17)
namaste paramādevi brahmayone namonamaḥ ardhamātrekṣare caiva tasyārdhārdhe namonamaḥ
Salutation to you, O supreme Goddess! Salutation, salutation, O womb of Brahma! Salutation, salutation to you who are the half-measure of the syllable, and the half of its half!
Verse 18 (skanda.7.406.18)
namaste padmapatrākṣi viśvamātarnamonamaḥ namaste varade devi rajaḥsattvatamomayi
Salutation to you, O lotus-petal-eyed one! Salutation, salutation, O mother of the universe! Salutation to you, O boon-giving Goddess, composed of rajas, sattva and tamas!
Verse 19 (skanda.7.406.19)
svasvarūpasthite devi tvaṁ ca saṁsāralakṣaṇam tvaṁ buddhistvaṁ dhṛtiḥ kṣāṁtistvaṁ svāhā tvaṁ svadhā kṣamā
Established in your own true form, O Goddess, you are the very mark of the world; you are intellect, you are steadfastness, you are forbearance, you are Svaha, you are Svadha, you are forgiveness.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.406.20)
tvaṁ vṛddhistvaṁ gatiḥ karttrī śacī lakṣmīśca pārvatī sāvitrī tvaṁ ca gāyatrī ajeyā pāpanāśinī
You are increase, you are the path, the doer; you are Shachi, Lakshmi, and Parvati; you are Savitri and Gayatri, unconquerable, destroyer of sin.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.406.21)
yaccānyadatra deveśi trailokye'stītisaṁjñitam tadrūpaṁ tāvakaṁ devi parvateṣu ca saṁsthitam
Whatever else exists in the three worlds, O lady of the gods, known by any name — that form of yours, O Goddess, is established in the mountains too.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.406.22)
vahninā ca yathā kāṣṭhaṁ taṁtunā ca yathā paṭaḥ tathā tvayā jagadvyāptaṁ guptā tvaṁ sarvataḥ sthitā
As fire pervades wood, as thread pervades cloth, so the universe is pervaded by you; you, hidden, are present everywhere.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.406.23)
pulastya uvāca evaṁ stutā jaganmātā tānuvāca surottamān varo me yācyatāṁ śīghramabhīṣṭaḥ surasattamāḥ
Pulastya said: Thus praised, the Mother of the universe spoke to those excellent gods: Let a boon be quickly asked of me, whatever is desired, O best of gods.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.406.24)
kimatra guptabhāvena tiṣṭhatha śvabhramadhyagāḥ madbhaktānāṁ bhayaṁ nāsti trailokyepi carācare
Why do you, hidden, remain here, gone into the midst of a cave? There is no fear for my devotees anywhere in the three worlds, whether moving or unmoving.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.406.25)
devā ūcuḥ kaliṁgena vayaṁ devi nirastāḥ saṁgare muhuḥ tena vyāptamidaṁ sarvaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram
The gods said: O Goddess, we have been repeatedly driven back by Kalinga in battle; by him this entire triple world, with its moving and unmoving beings, has been pervaded.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.406.26)
yajñabhāgo hṛto'smākaṁ daityānāṁ sa prakalpitaḥ tena svargaḥ samākrāntaḥ surāḥ sarve nirākṛtāḥ
Our share of the sacrifice has been taken away and allotted to the demons; by him heaven has been overrun, and all the gods have been driven out.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.406.27)
hatvā daityānyathā bhūyaḥ śakraḥ svapadamāpnuyāt tathā kuru mahābhāge vara eṣo'smadīpsitaḥ
Just as, having slain the demons before, Indra regained his own place — do so again, O greatly fortunate one; this is the boon we desire.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.406.28)
devyuvāca yathā yūyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭāstathaivāyaṁ mahāsuraḥ viśeṣo nāsti me kaścidubhayoḥ surasattamāḥ
The Goddess said: Just as you were created by me, so too was this great demon; I see no difference between the two of you, O best of gods.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.406.29)
tasmāttānvārayiṣyāmi śakrādyāṁstridivātpunaḥ evamuktvā varārohā preṣayāmāsa pārthiva
Therefore I shall restrain them — Indra and the others — and restore them to heaven once again. Having said this, the lovely one, O king, sent
Verse 30 (skanda.7.406.30)
dūtaṁ kaliṁgadaityāya tyaja tvaṁ tridivaṁ drutam sa gatvā bāṣkaliṁ daityaṁ sāmapūrvaṁ vaco'bravīt
a messenger to the demon Kalinga: 'Abandon heaven at once.' He went to the demon Bashkali and spoke conciliatory words first.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.406.31)
dūta uvāca yā sā sarvagatā devī śaktirūpā śuci smitā śrīmātā jagatāṁ mātā devairārādhitā parā teṣāṁ tuṣṭā ca devī tvāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt
The messenger said: That all-pervading Goddess, of Shakti-form, of pure smile — Shrimata, mother of the worlds, supremely worshipped by the gods — pleased with them, she spoke this word to you:
Verse 32 (skanda.7.406.32)
svasthānaṁ gaccha śīghraṁ tvaṁ śakro yātu triviṣṭapam madvākyāddānavaśreṣṭha devatvaṁ na bhavettava
Go quickly to your own place; let Indra go to heaven. By my word, O best of demons, the state of godhood shall not be yours.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.406.33)
pulastya uvāca sa dūtavacanaṁ śrutvā dānavo madagarvitaḥ ahaṁ lokeśvaro matvā sagarvamidamabravīt
Pulastya said: Hearing the messenger's words, that demon, intoxicated with pride, thinking himself lord of the world, spoke thus with arrogance:
Verse 34 (skanda.7.406.34)
bāṣkaliruvāca kā śrīmāteti ke devā nāsmātsvargaṁ tyajāmyaham na tāṁ jānāmi tāṁścaiva gatvā brūhi mamājñayā
Bashkali said: Who is this Shrimata? Who are these gods? I shall not abandon heaven for their sake. I do not know her, nor them — go and tell them by my command:
Verse 35 (skanda.7.406.35)
na bhavadbhyasvahaṁ svargaṁ prayacchāmi kathaṁcana dūto'vadhyo bhavedrājñāmapi vaire sudāruṇe etasmātkāraṇāddūta na tvāṁ prāṇairviyojaye
I shall not give up heaven for you in any way. A messenger is inviolable even for kings, even in the most terrible enmity — for this reason alone, O messenger, I do not sever you from your life-breath.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.406.36)
śrīmātāṁ yadi me dūta darśayiṣyasi cettataḥ abhīṣṭānsaṁpradāsyāmi satyameva bravīmyaham
But, O messenger, if you show me this Shrimata, then I shall grant whatever she desires — I speak this truly.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.406.37)
ahaṁ tvayā samaṁ tatra yāsye yatra sthitā ca sā nigrahaṁ ca kariṣyāmi vākyaṁ me satyakāraṇam
I myself shall go there with you, wherever she is present, and I shall subdue her — my word is grounded in truth.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.406.38)
pulastya uvāca evamuktvā madonmatto dūtena ca sa dānavaḥ arbudaṁ prayayau tūrṇaṁ roṣeṇa mahatā vṛtaḥ
Pulastya said: Having said this, that demon, intoxicated with pride at the messenger's words, went swiftly to Arbuda, surrounded by great fury.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.406.39)
dṛṣṭvā bāṣkalimāyāṁtaṁ devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ vāryamāṇāstadā devyā palāyanaparāyaṇāḥ
Seeing Bashkali approaching, the gods headed by Indra, then restrained by the Goddess, resorted to flight,
Verse 40 (skanda.7.406.40)
bhayena mahatāviṣṭā diśo bhejuḥ samaṁtataḥ athāsau bāṣkaliḥ prāptaḥ sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ
overcome with great fear, they fled in all directions. Then that Bashkali arrived, surrounded by a mighty army,
Verse 41 (skanda.7.406.41)
śrīmātā tiṣṭhate yatra parvaterbudasaṁjñake dūtaṁ ca preṣayāmāsa tamuvāca narādhipaḥ
where Shrimata dwelt, on the mountain named Arbuda. And he sent a messenger, and the king spoke to him:
Verse 42 (skanda.7.406.42)
bāṣkaliruvāca gaccha dūtavara brūhi śrīmātāṁ cāruhāsinīm bhāryā me bhava suśroṇi ahaṁ te vaśagaḥ sadā
Bashkali said: Go, excellent messenger, and tell the lovely-smiling Shrimata: Become my wife, O fair-hipped one; I shall be ever under your sway.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.406.43)
bhaviṣyati hi me rājyaṁ sarvaṁ vaśagataṁ tava anyathā dharṣayiṣyāmi sarvaiḥ sārddhaṁ surottamaiḥ
My whole kingdom shall be under your control. Otherwise, I shall subdue you, together with all the excellent gods.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.406.44)
kimiṁdreṇālpavīryeṇa kimanyaiśca varānane sahasrākṣo na me tulyo na me tulyāḥ surāsurāḥ
What is Indra, of little strength, to me? What are the others, O fair-faced one? The thousand-eyed one is not my equal, nor are gods or demons my equal.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.406.45)
pulastya uvāca etacchrutvā tato gatvā sa dūtaḥ saṁnyavedayat tasya sarvaṁ yathāvākyaṁ tenoktaṁ ca mahīpate
Pulastya said: Having heard this, the messenger went and reported to her everything just as it had been spoken by him, O lord of the earth.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.406.46)
tataḥ śrutvā smitaṁ kṛtvā ciṁtayāmāsa bhāminī jarā maraṇahīnoyaṁ daityendraḥ śaṁbhunā kṛtaḥ
Hearing it, the lovely one smiled and reflected: This lord of demons has been made free from old age and death by Shambhu himself.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.406.47)
kathamasya mayā kāryo nigraho devatākṛte punaściṁtayate yāvatsā devī dānavaṁ prati tāvattatrāgataḥ śīghraṁ sa kāmena pariplutaḥ
How shall his subjugation be accomplished by me, for the sake of the gods? While the Goddess was still pondering thus concerning the demon, he arrived there swiftly, overwhelmed with desire.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.406.48)
atha dṛṣṭinipātena sā devī dānavādhipam vyalokayattatastasyā niścayaḥ saṁbabhūva ha
Then, with a mere glance, the Goddess looked upon the lord of the demons, and thereupon her resolve was formed.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.406.49)
tato jahāsa sā devīśanakairvṛpasattama mukhāttasyāstataḥ sainyaṁ niṣkrāṁtamatibhīṣaṇam
Then the Goddess laughed softly, O best of kings, and from her mouth there issued forth an army, exceedingly terrible —
Verse 50 (skanda.7.406.50)
hastino hayavaryāśca pādātāśca pṛthagvidhāḥ rathasāhasramārūḍhā yodhāścāpi sahasraśaḥ
elephants, excellent horses, and foot-soldiers of various kinds; a thousand chariots mounted, and warriors too, by the thousands.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.406.51)
taiḥ sainyaṁ dānaveśasya sarvaṁ śastrairnipātitam paśyatastasya daityasya niścalasyāsurasya ca
By them, the entire army of the lord of demons was struck down with weapons, while that demon, motionless, looked on.
Verse 52 (skanda.7.406.52)
hate sainya bale tasminniṁdrādyāstridivaukasaḥ tāmūcurvacanaṁ devi dānavaṁ hantumarhasi nāsmiñjīvati no rājyaṁ svarge devi bhaviṣyati
When that army-force was slain, Indra and the other heaven-dwellers said this word to the Goddess: O Goddess, you ought to slay the demon; while he lives, our kingdom in heaven shall not be.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.406.53)
pulastya uvāca śrutvā tadvacanaṁ teṣāṁ jñātvā taṁ mṛtyuvarjitam parvatasya mahāśṛṁgaṁ dattvā tasyopari svayam
Pulastya said: Hearing their words, and knowing him to be free from death, the Goddess, having given the great peak of the mountain, upon it herself
Verse 54 (skanda.7.406.54)
niviṣṭā sā jaganmātā śrīmātā kāmarūpiṇī hitāya jagatāṁ rājannadyāpi varaparvate tatraiva vasate sākṣānnṛṇāṁ kāmapradāyinī
the Mother of the universe, Shrimata, of desire-fulfilling form, settled — for the welfare of the worlds, O king — and even to this day, on that excellent mountain, she dwells there indeed, the bestower of desires upon men.
Verse 55 (skanda.7.406.55)
etasminneva kāle tu sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ tuṣṭuvustāṁ mahāśaktiṁ bhayahantrīṁ praharṣitāḥ
At that very time, all the gods, together with Vasava (Indra), praised that great Shakti, the destroyer of fear, filled with joy.
Verse 56 (skanda.7.406.56)
prasannā'bhūttato devī teṣāṁ tatra narādhipa svaṁsvaṁ sthānaṁ surāḥ sarve pariyāṁtu gatavyathāḥ gatvā sthānaṁ svakaṁ sarve paripāṁtu gatavyathāḥ
Then the Goddess became pleased with them there, O lord of men: Let all the gods, freed from distress, go each to his own abode; having gone to their own abode, let all be freed from distress.
Verse 57 (skanda.7.406.57)
varaṁ varaya devendra brūhi yatte manogatam tatsarvaṁ saṁpradāsyāmi tuṣṭāhaṁ bhaktitastava
Choose a boon, O lord of the gods; tell me what is in your mind — I shall grant you all of it, for I am pleased through your devotion.
Verse 58 (skanda.7.406.58)
indra uvāca yadi tuṣṭāsi me devi śāśvate bhaktivatsale atraiva sthīyatāṁ tāvatsvarge yāvadahaṁ vibhuḥ
Indra said: If you are pleased with me, O eternal Goddess, dear to your devotees, then remain right here so long as I, in heaven,
Verse 59 (skanda.7.406.59)
praśāsmi rājyaṁ deveśi śāśvate bhaktavatsale ajaraścāmaraścaiva yato daityaḥ sureśvari
rule the kingdom, O lady of the gods, eternal, dear to your devotees — since that demon, O sovereign of the gods, is ageless and immortal,
Verse 60 (skanda.7.406.60)
hareṇa nirmitaḥ pūrvaṁ yena tiṣṭhati niścalaḥ prasādāttava lokāśca trayaḥ saṁtu nirāmayāḥ
having formerly been made so by Hara (Shiva) that he remains unshaken. By your grace, let the three worlds be free from affliction.
Verse 61 (skanda.7.406.61)
atra tvāṁ pūjayiṣyāmo vayaṁ sarve sametya ca caitraśuklacaturddaśyāṁ dṛṣṭvā tvāṁ yāṁtu sadgatim
Here we shall all worship you, gathered together; having seen you on the fourteenth of the bright half of Chaitra, let beings go to a good state.
Verse 62 (skanda.7.406.62)
pulastya uvāca evamuktvā sahasrākṣaḥ sarvadevaiḥ samanvitaḥ hṛṣṭastriviṣṭapaṁ prāpto devyāstasyāḥ prabhāvataḥ
Pulastya said: Having said this, the thousand-eyed one (Indra), together with all the gods, joyfully attained heaven, by the power of that Goddess.
Verse 63 (skanda.7.406.63)
sāpi tatra sthitā devī devānāṁ hitakāmyayā
She too remained there, the Goddess, for the welfare of the gods.
Verse 64 (skanda.7.406.64)
yastāṁ paśyati caitrasya caturddaśyāṁ site nṛpa sa yāti paramaṁ sthānaṁ jarāmaraṇavarjjitam
Whoever beholds her on the bright fourteenth of Chaitra, O king, attains the supreme state, free from old age and death.
Verse 65 (skanda.7.406.65)
kiṁ vratairniyamairvāpi dānairdatte narādhipa sarve taddarśanasyāpi kalāṁ nārhaṁti ṣoḍaśīm
What use are vows, observances, or gifts given, O lord of men? All these together are not worth a sixteenth part of merely beholding her.
Verse 66 (skanda.7.406.66)
tatraiva pāduke divye tayā nyaste narādhipa yaste paśyati bhūyo'sau saṁsāraṁ na hi paśyati sarvānkāmānavāpnoti iha loke paratra ca
There, in that very place, she placed her two divine sandals, O lord of men; whoever again beholds them does not behold this worldly existence — he obtains all desires, in this world and the next.
Verse 67 (skanda.7.406.67)
yayātiruvāca kasminkāle dvijaśreṣṭha devyā mukte'tra pāduke kasmācca kāraṇādbrūhi sarvaṁ vistarato mama
Yayati said: At what time, O best of the twice-born, were the sandals left here by the Goddess? For what reason — tell me all in full.
Verse 68 (skanda.7.406.68)
pulastya uvāca tāṁ devīṁ mānavāḥ sarve saṁvīkṣya nṛpasattama prāpnuvaṁti parāṁ siddhiṁ dvividhāṁ dharmakāriṇaḥ
Pulastya said: All men, O best of kings, beholding that Goddess, doers of dharma, attain the supreme accomplishment, of two kinds.
Verse 69 (skanda.7.406.69)
etasminneva kāle tu yajñadānādikāḥ kriyāḥ praṇaṣṭā bhūtale rājaṁstīrthayātrāvratodbhavāḥ
At that very time, rites of sacrifice and charity, and those arising from vows of pilgrimage, were lost upon the earth, O king.
Verse 70 (skanda.7.406.70)
śūnyāste narakāḥ sarve saṁbabhūvuryamasya ye yajñabhāgavihīnāśca devāḥ kaṣṭamupāgatāḥ
All those hells of Yama became empty, and the gods, deprived of their sacrificial share, fell into distress.
Verse 71 (skanda.7.406.71)
atha sarve nṛpaśreṣṭha devāstatra samāgatāḥ ūcurgatvā'rbudaṁ tatra śrīmātāṁ parameśvarīm
Then, O best of kings, all the gods gathered together and, having gone to Arbuda, spoke to Shrimata, the supreme goddess:
Verse 72 (skanda.7.406.72)
devā ūcuḥ agniṣṭomādikāḥ sarvāḥ kriyā naṣṭāḥ sureśvari martyaloke vayaṁ tena karmaṇātīva pīḍitāḥ
The gods said: All rites beginning with Agnishtoma have been destroyed, O sovereign of the gods; in the mortal world we are exceedingly afflicted on that account.
Verse 73 (skanda.7.406.73)
dṛṣṭvā tvāṁ devi pāpmānaḥ siddhiṁ yāṁti sapūrvajāḥ tasmādyathā vayaṁ puṣṭiṁ vrajāmaste prasādataḥ
Sinners, having beheld you, O Goddess, attain accomplishment together with their ancestors; therefore, that we too may attain due nourishment by your grace,
Verse 74 (skanda.7.406.74)
na niṣkrāmati daityaśca bāṣkalistvaṁ tathā kuru
do this: let the demon Bashkali not go forth again.
Verse 75 (skanda.7.406.75)
pulastya uvāca teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā saṁciṁtya suciraṁ tadā muktvā sve pāduke tatra kṛtvā cāśmasamudbhave devānuvāca rājeṁdra sarvānarttimupāgatān
Pulastya said: Hearing their words, having then pondered for a long while, she left her two sandals there, made of stone, and, O king of kings, spoke to all the gods who had come there afflicted:
Verse 76 (skanda.7.406.76)
śrīdevyuvāca yuṣmadvākyena tyakto hi mayā'yaṁ parvatottamaḥ vinyaste pāduke tasya rakṣārthaṁ bāṣkaleḥ surāḥ
Shri Devi said: By your word, I have indeed relinquished this excellent mountain. My sandals have been placed here, O gods, for the purpose of restraining Bashkali.
Verse 77 (skanda.7.406.77)
Pressed down by the weight of my sandals, O best of gods, that demon shall not be able to move from his place, immobilized as he shall be by me.
Verse 78 (skanda.7.406.78)
etacchāstraṁ mayā kṛtsnaṁ pādukārthaṁ vinirmitam adhyātmakaṁ hitārthāya prāṇināṁ pṛthivītale
This entire scripture has been composed by me concerning the sandals, spiritual, for the welfare of living beings on earth.
Verse 79 (skanda.7.406.79)
śāstramārgeṇa cānena bhaktyā yaḥ pāduke mama pūjayiṣyati siddhiḥ syāttasya maddarśanodbhavā
By this scriptural path, whoever worships my sandals with devotion — his accomplishment shall arise from the sight of me.
Verse 80 (skanda.7.406.80)
caitraśuklacaturddaśyāmahamatrārbude sadā ahorātre vasiṣyāmi suguptā girigahvare
On the fourteenth of the bright half of Chaitra, I shall always dwell here at Arbuda, day and night, well hidden in a mountain cave.
Verse 81 (skanda.7.406.81)
parvato'yaṁ mamābhīṣṭo na ca tyaktuṁ mano dadhe tathāpi saṁparityakto yuṣmākaṁ hitakāmyayā
This mountain is dear to me, and I do not wish to leave it; nevertheless, I relinquish it for the sake of your welfare.
Verse 82 (skanda.7.406.82)
pulastya uvāca evamuktvā tu sā devī samaṁtāddevakiṁnaraiḥ stūyamānā yayau svargaṁ muktvā te pāduke śubhe
Pulastya said: Having said this, the Goddess, praised on all sides by gods and Kinnaras, went to heaven, leaving behind those two auspicious sandals.
Verse 83 (skanda.7.406.83)
adyāpi siddhimāyāṁti yogino dhyānatatparāḥ tanniṣṭhāstadgataprāṇā yathā devyāḥ pradarśanāt
Even today, yogis devoted to meditation attain accomplishment, fixed upon them, their life-breath absorbed in them, just as through the manifestation of the Goddess.
Verse 84 (skanda.7.406.84)
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yanmāṁ tva paripṛcchasi śrīmātāsaṁbhavaṁ puṇyaṁ pādukābhyāṁ ca bhūmipa
All this has been related to you, that which you asked me — the sacred origin of Shrimata, and of her two sandals, O lord of the earth.
Verse 85 (skanda.7.406.85)
yastvetatpaṭhate bhaktyā ślāghate vā'tha yo naraḥ sarvapāpairmahārāja mucyate jñānatatparaḥ
Whoever recites this with devotion, or praises it, O great king — that man, devoted to knowledge, is freed from all sins.
