Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 417
The Glory of Partheshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.7.417.1)
pulastya uvāca | tataḥ pārtheśvaraṁ gacchedevaṁ pātakanāśanam | yaṁ dṛṣṭvā mānavaḥ samyaṅmucyate sarvapātakaiḥ
Pulastya said: Then one should go to Partheshvara, which thus destroys sin, seeing which a man is duly freed from all sins.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.417.2)
pārthā nāmnyabhavatsādhvī devalasya priyā satī | tayā pūrvaṁ tapastaptaṁ tatra sthāne mahīpate
O king, there was a virtuous wife named Parthā, the beloved of the sage Devala; by her, formerly, austerity was performed in that place.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.417.3)
sā pūrvamabhavadvandhyā ṛṣipatnī yaśasvinī | vairāgyaṁ paramaṁ gatvā tataścaivārbudaṁ gatā
That illustrious wife of the sage was formerly barren. Having attained supreme dispassion, she then went to Mount Arbuda.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.417.4)
vāyubhakṣā nirāhārā samacittāsane sthitā | tato varṣasahasrānte bhaktyā tasyā mahīpate
Living on air alone, without food, seated with an even mind — then, O king, at the end of a thousand years, through her devotion —
Verse 5 (skanda.7.417.5)
udbhidya dharaṇīpṛṣṭhaṁ sahasā liṅgamutthitam | etasminneva kāle tu vāguvācāśarīriṇī
Suddenly, splitting open the surface of the earth, a linga rose up. At that very moment a bodiless voice spoke.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.417.6)
pūjayaitanmahābhāge śivaliṅgaṁ supāvanam | tvadbhaktyā dharaṇīpṛṣṭhānniḥsṛtaṁ kāmadaṁ mahat
O most fortunate one, worship this most purifying Shiva-linga. Through your devotion it has emerged from the earth's surface, great and wish-fulfilling.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.417.7)
yo yaṁ kāmamabhidhyāyanpūjayiṣyati mānavaḥ | anyopi tadabhipretaṁ prāpsyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
Whatever desire a person contemplates while worshipping this linga, another too shall attain what is longed for — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.417.8)
pārtheśvarākhyametaddhi loke khyātiṁ gamiṣyati | evamuktvā tato vāṇī virarāma mahīpate
This linga, named Partheshvara, shall indeed attain fame in the world. Having said this, O king, the voice then fell silent.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.417.9)
tataḥ sā vismayāviṣṭā pūjayāmāsa tattadā | tataḥ putraśataṁ prāptaṁ divyaṁ vaṁśadharaṁ tathā
Then she, filled with wonder, worshipped it at once; thereafter she obtained a hundred divine sons, continuers of the lineage.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.417.10)
tataḥ prabhṛti talliṅgaṁ vikhyātaṁ dharaṇītale | tatrāsti nirmalaṁ toyaṁ girigahvaraniḥsṛtam
From then on that linga became renowned on earth. There is pure water there, flowing out from a mountain cave.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.417.11)
The man who, having duly bathed there, beholds it with devotion, does not experience in this world the sorrow born of childlessness.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.417.12)
śuklapakṣe caturdaśyāṁ jāgaraṁ tasya cāgrataḥ | yaḥ karoti nirāhāraḥ sa putraṁ labhate dhruvam
He who, fasting, keeps vigil before it on the fourteenth of the bright fortnight, certainly obtains a son.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.417.13)
piṇḍanirvāpaṇaṁ tatra yaḥ karoti samāhitaḥ | tasya putratvamāyāti pitarastatprasādataḥ
He who, with a composed mind, offers the ancestral rice-ball there — by its grace his forefathers attain the state of a true son, that is, they are satisfied and reach a good state.
