Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 449
Durvasa's Visit to Dvaraka and the Curse upon Rukmini
Verse 1 (skanda.7.449.1)
prahlāda uvāca| sarveṣāmapi bhūtānāṁ daityadānavarakṣasām| bhavanto vai pūjyatamā devādīnāṁ tathaiva ca||
Prahlada said: Among all beings — demons, danavas, and rakshasas alike — and among the gods too, you are most worthy of worship.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.449.2)
anujñayā tu yuṣmākaṁ prasādātkeśavasya hi| adhiṣṭhānaṁ bhagavataḥ kathayāmi nibodhata||
With your leave, and by the grace of Keshava, I shall now declare the Lord's abode — listen well.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.449.3)
paścimasya samudrasya tīramāśritya tiṣṭhati| kuśasthalīti yā pūrvaṁ kuśena sthāpitā purī||
Resting upon the shore of the western ocean stands the city that was of old founded by Kusha, and named Kushasthali.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.449.4)
vahate gomatī yatra sāgareṇa samantataḥ| dvārāvatīti sā viprā ānarteṣu prakīrtitā||
There, where the river Gomati flows, joined on every side by the sea, that city, O brahmins, is renowned in the land of Anarta as Dvaravati.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.449.5)
tasyāṁ vasati viśvātmā sarvakāmapradaḥ hariḥ| kalā ṣoḍaśasaṁyukto mūrtiṁ dvādaśakānvitaḥ||
There dwells Hari, the soul of the universe, granter of every desire, endowed with sixteen divine powers and manifest in twelve forms.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.449.6)
tadeva paramaṁ dhāma tadeva paramaṁ padam| dvārakā sā ca vai dhanyā yatrāste madhusūdanaḥ||
That indeed is the supreme abode, that the supreme state — blessed is that Dvaraka where Madhusudana resides.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.449.7)
yatra kṛṣṇaścaturbāhuḥ śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ| narā muktiṁ prayāsyanti tatra gatvā kalau yuge||
Where the four-armed Krishna bears the conch, discus, and mace — going there, in the Kali age, men shall attain liberation.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.449.8)
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya prahlādasya mahātmanaḥ| vismayāviṣṭamanasastamūcurmunisattamāḥ||
Hearing these words of the great-souled Prahlada, those foremost sages, their minds filled with wonder, said to him:
Verse 9 (skanda.7.449.9)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| kṣayaṁ yadukule yāte bhāre copahṛte bhuvaḥ| prabhāse yādavaśreṣṭhaḥ svasthānamagamaddhariḥ||
The sages said: When the Yadu clan had perished and the earth's burden was lifted, Hari, foremost of the Yadavas, departed for his own abode at Prabhasa —
Verse 10 (skanda.7.449.10)
dvārāvatyā plāvitāyāṁ samantātsāgareṇa hi| kathaṁ sa bhagavāṁstatra kalau daitya prakīrtyate||
and when Dvaravati was submerged on every side by the ocean, how, O demon, is that Lord still declared to be present there in the Kali age?
Verse 11 (skanda.7.449.11)
kathayasva suraśreṣṭha kathaṁ viṣṇurmahītale| sthitaścānartaviṣaya etadvistarato vada||
Tell us, O best of beings, how Vishnu abides on earth in the land of Anarta — explain this to us in full.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.449.12)
ugrasene narapatau praśāsati vasundharām| kṛṣṇo yadupurīmetāṁ śobhayāmāsa sarvataḥ||
Prahlada said: While King Ugrasena governed the earth, Krishna made this city of the Yadus resplendent on every side.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.449.13)
ramamāṇe ramānāthe rāmābhiramaṇe harau| ekadā tu samāsīne sabhāyāṁ yadusattame||
One day, as Hari, lord of Rama (Lakshmi) and delighting with Balarama, sat in the assembly hall, foremost among the Yadus,
Verse 14 (skanda.7.449.14)
kathābhiḥ kriyamāṇābhirvicitrābhiranekadhā| uddhavaḥ kathayāmāsa pracāraṁ yadunandanam||
amid many wondrous tales being told, Uddhava related some news to that delight of the Yadus.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.449.15)
yātrāyāmanusamprāptaṁ durvāsasamakalmaṣam| sthitaṁ taṁ gomatītīre cakratīrthasamīpataḥ||
The sinless sage Durvasa, arriving there on pilgrimage, was staying on the bank of the Gomati, near Chakra-tirtha.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.449.16)
tacchrutvā sahasotthāya bhagavānrukmiṇīgṛham| jagāma hṛṣṭamanasā viśvaśaktiradhokṣajaḥ||
Hearing this, the Lord rose at once and, rejoicing at heart, that all-powerful Adhokshaja went to Rukmini's dwelling.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.449.17)
āgatyovāca vaidarbhīṁ samprāptamṛṣisattamam| taponirdhūtapāpmā'yamatriputro mahātapāḥ||
Coming to her, he said to Vaidarbhi (Rukmini): 'That great ascetic, son of Atri, whose sins have been washed away by austerity, has now arrived here.'
Verse 18 (skanda.7.449.18)
ātithyenārcito vipro dāsyate ca mahodayam| gṛhiṇī na gṛhe yasya satpātrāgamanaṁ vṛthā||
A brahmin honoured with hospitality bestows great blessing; but if a house has no mistress present, the arrival of a worthy guest goes in vain.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.449.19)
tasya devā na gṛhṇanti pitaraśca tathodakam| tadāgacchasva gacchāmo nimantrayitumatrijam||
Neither gods nor ancestors accept the water offered by such a one. So come, let us go to invite the son of Atri.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.449.20)
tathetyuktvā tu sā devī rathamāruruhe satī| rathamāruhya deveśo rukmiṇyā sahito hariḥ| jagāma tatra yatrāste durvāsā munisattamaḥ||
Saying 'so be it,' that virtuous lady mounted the chariot. Mounting the chariot with Rukmini, Hari, lord of the gods, went to where the great sage Durvasa was staying.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.449.21)
dṛṣṭvā jvalantaṁ tapasā kūle nadanadīpateḥ| kāpālikasya purataḥ susnātaṁ varasīkaraiḥ||
They saw him, blazing with the fire of austerity, on the shore of the lord of rivers, appearing as a Kapalika ascetic, well bathed in fine spray of water.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.449.22)
praṇamya bhagavānbhaktyā papracchānāmayaṁ tataḥ| paścādvidarbhatanayā rukmiṇī praṇanāma tam||
The Lord bowed to him with devotion and inquired after his welfare, and afterward Rukmini, the princess of Vidarbha, bowed to him as well.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.449.23)
durvāsāścāpi tau dṛṣṭvā darśanārthamupāgatau| papraccha kuśalaṁ tatra svāgatenābhinandya ca||
Durvasa too, seeing them come for his darshan, welcomed them and asked after their welfare.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.449.24)
durvāsā uvāca| kuśalaṁ kṛṣṇa sarvatra kutra vāsastavādhunā| kati dārā dhanāpatyametadvistarato vada||
Durvasa said: Krishna, is all well with you everywhere? Where do you now reside? How many wives, how much wealth, how many children have you — tell me this in full.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.449.25)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca| samudreṇa pradattā me bhūmirdvādaśayojanā| tasyāṁ nivasato brahmanpurī hemamayī mama||
Shri Krishna said: The ocean has granted me twelve yojanas of land, O brahmin; dwelling there, I have my golden city.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.449.26)
prāsādāstatra sauvarṇā navalakṣāṇi saṁkhyayā| tasyāṁ vasāmi saṁhṛṣṭastvatprasādātsunirbhayaḥ||
There are nine hundred thousand golden mansions there; in that city I dwell, joyful and wholly fearless, by your grace.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.449.27)
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya vismayāviṣṭamānasaḥ| pratyuvāca sa durvāsāḥ prahasya madhusūdanam||
Hearing his words, Durvasa, his mind filled with wonder, laughingly replied to Madhusudana:
Verse 28 (skanda.7.449.28)
vasanti tāvakā ye ca teṣāṁ saṁkhyā vadasva bhoḥ| yāvatyaśca mahiṣyaste putrāḥ parijanāstathā||
Tell me the number of those who dwell with you — how many are your queens, your sons, and your retinue?
Verse 29 (skanda.7.449.29)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca| brahmanṣoḍaśasāhasraṁ bhāryāścāṣṭādhikā mama| tāsāṁ madhye'bhīṣṭatamā vidarbhādhipateḥ sutā||
Shri Krishna said: O brahmin, I have sixteen thousand and eight wives; among them, the daughter of the king of Vidarbha is dearest to me.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.449.30)
ekaikasyā daśa sutāḥ kanyā caikā tathā mune| ṣaṭpañcāśadyadūnāṁ tu koṭyaḥ parijano mama||
O sage, each wife has ten sons and one daughter; my kinsfolk number fifty-six crore Yadavas.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.449.31)
śeṣāḥ prakṛtayo brahmaṁsteṣāṁ saṁkhyā na vidyate| tacchrutvā cintayāmāsa kimetaditi vismitaḥ||
As for the rest of my subjects, O brahmin, their number cannot be reckoned. Hearing this, Durvasa, astonished, began to wonder what this could mean.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.449.32)
aho hyanantavīryasya māyāmāśritya tiṣṭhataḥ| anantā sarvakartṛtve pravṛttirdṛśyatāmiyam||
Ah, how wondrous! This is the boundless activity to be seen in one of infinite power, who abides sustained by his own maya, capable of all things without limit.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.449.33)
durvāsā uvāca| svāgataṁ te mahābāho brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te| darśanena tvadīyena prītimeti ca me manaḥ||
Durvasa said: Welcome, O mighty-armed one! Tell me, what shall I do for you? My heart rejoices at the sight of you.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.449.34)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca| yadi prasanno bhagavāṁstadāgacchasva me gṛham| śirasā dhārya pādāmbu prayāsyāmi pavitratām||
Shri Krishna said: If you are pleased, O revered one, then come to my home. Bearing the water from your feet upon my head, I shall become pure.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.449.35)
durvāsā uvāca| akṣamāsārasarvasvaṁ kiṁ māṁ nayasi mādhava| naya māṁ yadi madvākyaṁ karoṣi saha bhāryayā||
Durvasa said: Madhava, will you simply carry me — who possess nothing but this rosary of beads — along with you? If you will do as I say, then carry me together with your wife.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.449.36)
prahlāda uvāca| evamastviti coktvā sa prasthitaḥ svarathena hi| taṁ dṛṣṭvā prasthitaṁ viṣṇuṁ prahasyovāca bhartsayan||
Prahlada said: Saying 'so be it,' Krishna set out in his own chariot. Seeing Vishnu thus setting forth, Durvasa laughed and spoke, taunting him:
Verse 37 (skanda.7.449.37)
durvāsā uvāca| durvāsasaṁ na jānāsi muñcemānhayasattamān| tvaṁ ca bhāryā tathā ceyaṁ vahataṁ svarathena mām||
Durvasa said: Do you not know Durvasa? Release these fine horses — you and this wife of yours shall draw me yourselves in your own chariot.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.449.38)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca| bhagavanyathā prabravīṣi vipra kartāsmi tattathā| tvayā kṛpālunā brahmanpārito'haṁ sabāndhavaḥ||
Shri Krishna said: O revered brahmin, whatever you command, I shall do accordingly. By your compassion, O brahmin, I and my kin are saved.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.449.39)
prahlāda uvāca| tau tathā ṛṣivaryo'sau yuktāṁ devīṁ rathe svake| tathaiva puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ yāhi yāhītyabhāṣata||
Prahlada said: Then that great sage, having yoked both the goddess and the lotus-eyed Krishna to his own chariot, cried out, 'Go, go!'
Verse 40 (skanda.7.449.40)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā devatāḥ sarvā vahamānaṁ rathaṁ harim| sādhusādhviti bhāṣanta ūcuḥ sarve parasparam||
Seeing Hari drawing the chariot, all the gods exclaimed 'Well done, well done!' and spoke among themselves:
Verse 41 (skanda.7.449.41)
aho brahmaṇyadevasya parāṁ bhaktiṁ prapaśyata| skandhe kṛtvā dhuraṁ yo hi vahate bhāryayā saha||
Behold the supreme devotion of that Lord, devoted to brahmins, who bears the yoke upon his shoulder and draws the chariot together with his wife!
Verse 42 (skanda.7.449.42)
vikīryamāṇaḥ kusumaiḥ surasaṅghairjanārdanaḥ| jagāma sa rathaṁ gṛhya sabhāryo dvārakāṁ prati||
Showered with flowers by the hosts of gods, Janardana, with his wife, drew the chariot on toward Dvaraka.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.449.43)
uhyamāne rathe tasminrukmiṇī tṛṣitā'bhavat| uvāca kṛṣṇaṁ vaidarbhī śramavyākulalocanā||
As that chariot was being drawn, Rukmini grew thirsty; Vaidarbhi, her eyes weary with exhaustion, said to Krishna:
Verse 44 (skanda.7.449.44)
śrāntā bhāraparikliṣṭā vahatī kopanaṁ dvijam| pāyayitvodakaṁ kānta naya māṁ mandiraṁ svakam||
Weary and worn by the burden, I am drawing this irascible brahmin. My beloved, give me water to drink, and take me home.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.449.45)
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasyāḥ pādākrāntyā dharātalāt| ānayāmāsa bhagavāngaṅgāṁ tripathagāṁ śubhām||
Hearing her words, the Lord pressed the earth with his foot and brought forth the auspicious Ganga, traveller of the three worlds.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.449.46)
taddṛṣṭvā nirmalaṁ śītaṁ sugandhaṁ pāvanaṁ tathā| papau pipāsitā devī rukmiṇī jāhnavījalam||
Seeing that pure, cool, fragrant, purifying water, the thirsty goddess Rukmini drank of the Ganga's stream.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.449.47)
pītaṁ tayā jalaṁ dṛṣṭvā cukopa ṛṣisattamaḥ| jajvāla jvalanaprakhyaḥ śaśāpa parameśvarīm||
Seeing her drink the water, that foremost of sages grew furious; blazing like fire, he cursed the supreme goddess.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.449.48)
durvāsā uvāca| māmapṛṣṭvā jalaṁ yasmātpītavatyasi rukmiṇi| tasmātpānaratā nityaṁ bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ||
Durvasa said: Because you, Rukmini, drank water without asking my leave, you shall, without doubt, become forever devoted to flowing water.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.449.49)
aviyuktā rathādyasmānmāmapṛṣṭvā jalaṁ tvayā| pītaṁ tasmācca kṛṣṇena viyuktā tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi||
Since, without stepping away from the chariot, you drank water without my leave, you shall for that be separated from Krishna.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.449.50)
prahlāda uvāca| etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ| parityajya rathaṁ vipro bhūmāvevāvatiṣṭhati||
Prahlada said: Having said this much, the brahmin, his eyes red with rage, abandoned the chariot and stood there upon the ground.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.449.51)
evaṁ śaptā tadā devī rudodātīva vihvalā| uvāca kṛṣṇaṁ karuṇaṁ kathaṁ sthāsye tvayā vinā||
Thus cursed, the goddess wept, utterly overwhelmed, and said to Krishna in piteous tones: 'How shall I live without you?'
Verse 52 (skanda.7.449.52)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca| āyāsye pratyahaṁ devi dvikālaṁ bhavanaṁ tava| yo māṁ paśyati cātrasthaṁ sa tvāmeva prapaśyati||
Shri Krishna said: O goddess, I shall come to your dwelling twice each day. Whoever sees me present here shall in truth be seeing you.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.449.53)
māṁ hi dṛṣṭvā naro yastu tvāṁ na paśyati bhaktitaḥ| ardhaṁ yātrāphalaṁ tasya bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ||
Whoever, having seen me, does not also with devotion behold you, shall obtain but half the fruit of his pilgrimage — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 54 (skanda.7.449.54)
āśvāsya ca priyāmevaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ yadunandanaḥ| tataḥ prasādayāmāsa durvāsasamakalmaṣam||
Having thus consoled his beloved, the delight of the Yadus then set about pacifying the sinless Durvasa.
Verse 55 (skanda.7.449.55)
bāhyo pavanamadhye tu pūjayāmāsa taṁ tathā| avanijya svayaṁ pādau viprapādāvanejanam| dhārayāmāsa śirasā jagataḥ pāvano hariḥ||
There in the open air, he worshipped him thus. Washing the brahmin's feet with his own hands, Hari, the purifier of the world, bore that water upon his own head.
Verse 56 (skanda.7.449.56)
dattvārghyaṁ gāṁ ca viprāya madhuparkaṁ sa bhaktitaḥ| vidhivadbhojayāmāsa ṣaḍrasena dvijottamam||
Offering the brahmin water, a cow, and honey-mixture with devotion, he duly fed that best of the twice-born a meal of the six flavours.
