Chapter 451All chaptersChapter 453

Verse 1 (skanda.7.452.1)

prahlāda uvāca| tato gacchedvijaśreṣṭhā gomatīṁ kṛṣṇasaṁśrayām| yasyā darśanamātreṇa mucyate sarvapātakaiḥ| sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ kṛṣṇasāyujyamāpnuyāt||

Prahlada said: Thereafter, O foremost of brahmins, one should go to the Gomati, refuge of Krishna, by the mere sight of which one is freed from every sin, and, wholly cleansed of all wrongdoing, attains union with Krishna.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.452.2)

duritaughakṣayakaramamaṅgalyavināśanam| sarvakāmapradaṁ nṝṇāṁ praṇamedgomatījalam||

One should bow to the waters of the Gomati, which destroy the mass of sins, dispel every misfortune, and fulfil all the desires of men.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.452.3)

mahāpāpakṣayakaramagatīnāṁgatipradam| pūrvapuṇyavaśātprāptaṁ praṇamedgomatījalam||

One should bow to the waters of the Gomati, which destroy the greatest sins and give refuge to the refugeless, and which are attained only through merit accumulated in former lives.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.452.4)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| daityendra saṁśayo'smākaṁ taṁ tvaṁ chettumihārhasi| iyaṁ kā gomatī tatra kenānītā mahāmate||

The sages said: O lord of demons, we have a doubt, and you alone are fit to resolve it. Who is this Gomati, and who, O wise one, brought her there?

Verse 5 (skanda.7.452.5)

kena kāryavaśeneha samprāptā varuṇālayam| sarvaṁ bhāgavataśreṣṭha hyetadvistarato vada||

For what purpose did she come to reach the abode of Varuna, the ocean? O foremost of devotees, tell us all this in full.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.452.6)

prahlāda uvāca| ekārṇave purā bhūte naṣṭe sthāvarajaṅgame| tadā brahmā samabhavadviṣṇornābhisaroruhāt||

Prahlada said: Of old, when the whole world had become a single ocean, and all things moving and unmoving had perished, then Brahma arose from the lotus of Vishnu's navel.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.452.7)

ādiṣṭaḥ prabhuṇā brahmā sṛjasva vividhāḥ prajāḥ| iti dhātā samādiṣṭo hariṇā sṛṣṭikāraṇe||

The Lord commanded Brahma: 'Create manifold beings.' Thus was the creator instructed by Hari for the work of creation.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.452.8)

uktvā bāḍhamiti brahmā tataḥ sṛṣṭau mano dadhe| sasarja mānasātsadyaḥ sanakādyānkumārakān| uvāca vacanaṁ brahmā prajāḥ sṛjata putrakāḥ||

Saying 'so be it,' Brahma then fixed his mind upon creation. He at once produced from his mind Sanaka and the other youthful sages, and said to them: 'My sons, create beings.'

Verse 9 (skanda.7.452.9)

brahmaṇo vacanaṁ śrutvā te kṛtāñjalayo'bruvan| bhagavanbhagavadrūpaṁ draṣṭukāmā vayaṁ prabho||

Hearing Brahma's word, they said, with joined palms: 'O lord, O master, we wish instead to behold the very form of the Lord.'

Verse 10 (skanda.7.452.10)

'We shall not pursue this creative task, so binding and so hard to accomplish,' they said, and all those youths — Sanaka and the rest — departed.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.452.11)

paścimāṁ diśamāsthāya tīre nadanadīpateḥ| tejomayasya rūpasya draṣṭukāmā mahātmanaḥ| tasminmānasamādhāya tepire paramaṁ tapaḥ||

Going to the western direction, to the shore of the lord of rivers, desiring to behold the radiant form of that great being, they fixed their minds upon him and performed the most intense austerity.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.452.12)

bahuvarṣasahasraistu prasanne dharaṇīdhare| bhittvā jalaṁ samuttasthau tejorūpaṁ durāsadam||

After many thousands of years, when the sustainer of the earth was pleased, that unapproachable radiant form arose, cleaving through the water.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.452.13)

anekadaityadamanaṁ bahuyantravidāraṇam| sūryakoṭiprabhābhāsaṁ sahasrāraṁ sudarśanam||

It was the discus Sudarshana — subduer of countless demons, shatterer of many a magical device, blazing with the splendour of a million suns, and possessed of a thousand spokes.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.452.14)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā vismitāḥ sarve brahmaputrāḥ parasparam| vīkṣamāṇā bhagavataḥ paramāyudhamuttamam||

Beholding that supreme and excellent weapon of the Lord, all the sons of Brahma, filled with wonder, gazed upon one another.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.452.15)

tānvilokya tathābhūtānvāguvācāśarīriṇī| bho brahmaputrā bhagavāñchīghramāvirbhaviṣyati||

Seeing them in that state, a disembodied voice spoke: 'O sons of Brahma, the Lord shall manifest himself very soon.'

Verse 16 (skanda.7.452.16)

arhaṇārthaṁ bhagavataḥ śīghramarghyaṁ prakalpyatām| āyudhaṁ lokanāthasya dvijāḥ śīghraṁ prasādyatām||

Quickly prepare an offering of welcome for the Lord's honour; O brahmins, swiftly propitiate the weapon of the lord of the worlds.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.452.17)

tacchrutvākāśavacanaṁ tuṣṭuvuste sudarśanam||

Hearing that voice from the sky, they began to praise Sudarshana.

Verse 18 (skanda.7.452.18)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| jyotirmaya namaste'stu namaste harivallabha| sudarśana namaste'stu sahasrārā'kṣarā'vyaya||

The sages said: Salutations to you, O radiant one! Salutations to you, beloved of Hari! Salutations to you, O Sudarshana, of a thousand spokes, imperishable, undecaying!

Verse 19 (skanda.7.452.19)

namaste sūryarūpāya brahmarūpāya te namaḥ| amoghāya namastubhyaṁ rathāṅgāya namonamaḥ||

Salutations to you in your form as the sun, salutations to you in your form as Brahman; salutations to you, unfailing one; salutations again and again, O wheel of the chariot!

Verse 20 (skanda.7.452.20)

evaṁ te pūjayāmāsuḥ sumanobhistathā'kṣataiḥ| stavairnānāvidhaiḥ stutvā praṇemurharivallabham||

Thus they worshipped it with flowers and unbroken rice grains, and having praised it with manifold hymns, bowed to that beloved of Hari.

Verse 21 (skanda.7.452.21)

tatprasādya sunābhaṁ tu prabhusaṁdarśanotsukāḥ| asmaranmanasā devaṁ brahmāṇaṁ pitaraṁ svakam||

Having thus propitiated that beautiful-hubbed discus, and eager for the sight of the Lord, they called to mind, in their hearts, their own father, the god Brahma.

Verse 22 (skanda.7.452.22)

teṣāṁ tu cintitaṁ jñātvā brahmā gaṅgāmathābravīt| yāhi śīghraṁ saricchreṣṭhe pṛthivyāṁ harikāraṇāt||

Knowing their thoughts, Brahma then said to the Ganga: 'Go quickly to the earth, O foremost of rivers, for Hari's sake.'

Verse 23 (skanda.7.452.23)

gāṁ gatā tvaṁ mahābhāge tato bahumatā'si me| urvyāṁ te gomatī nāma suprasiddhaṁ bhaviṣyati||

O fortunate one, having gone to the earth, you shall become even more esteemed by me; on earth, your name shall become renowned as 'Gomati.'

Verse 24 (skanda.7.452.24)

vasiṣṭhasyānugā bhūtvā yāhi śīghraṁ dharātalam| tātaṁ putrīvānuyātā vasiṣṭhatanayā bhava||

Following behind Vasishtha, go swiftly to the surface of the earth; as a daughter follows her father, become the daughter of Vasishtha and accompany him.

Verse 25 (skanda.7.452.25)

bāḍhamityeva sā devī prasthitā varuṇālayam| vasiṣṭhastvagrato yāti taṁ gaṅgā pṛṣṭhato'nvagāt||

Saying 'so be it,' that goddess set out toward the abode of Varuna. Vasishtha walked ahead, and the Ganga followed behind him.

Verse 26 (skanda.7.452.26)

tāṁ dṛṣṭvā manujāḥ sarve vasiṣṭhena samanvitām| namaścakrurmahābhāgāṁ gacchato paścimārṇavam||

Seeing that most fortunate goddess journeying toward the western ocean, accompanied by Vasishtha, all the people bowed to her.

Verse 27 (skanda.7.452.27)

āvirbabhūva tatraiva yatra te munayaḥ sthitāḥ| draṣṭukāmā hare rūpaṁ śriyā juṣṭaṁ caturbhujam||

She appeared right there, where those sages stood, longing to behold Hari's four-armed form, resplendent with glory.

Verse 28 (skanda.7.452.28)

dṛṣṭvā vasiṣṭhamanugāmāyāntīṁ surapāvanīm| avākiranmahābhāgāṁ sumanobhiśca sarvaśaḥ||

Seeing that purifier of the gods coming along, following Vasishtha, they showered flowers upon that most blessed one from every side.

Verse 29 (skanda.7.452.29)

divyairmālyaiḥ sugandhaiśca gandhadhūpaistathā'kṣataiḥ| sampūjya hṛṣṭamanasaḥ sādhusādhviti cābruvan||

Worshipping her with divine, fragrant garlands, sandal paste, incense, and unbroken rice, they, their hearts full of joy, exclaimed, 'Well done, well done!'

Verse 30 (skanda.7.452.30)

vasiṣṭhaṁ te'gragaṁ dṛṣṭvā hyudatiṣṭhaṁstato dvijāḥ| arghyādisatkriyāṁ kṛtvā prahṛṣṭā idamabruvan||

Seeing Vasishtha coming ahead, those brahmins rose up, and, having performed the rites of welcome with water and offerings, joyfully said this:

Verse 31 (skanda.7.452.31)

yasmāttvayā samānītā hyasmilloke saridvarā| tasmāttava sutetyevaṁ khyātiṁ loke gamiṣyati||

Because you have brought this excellent river into this world, she shall become known throughout the world as 'your daughter.'

Verse 32 (skanda.7.452.32)

goḥ svargādāgatā yasmādidaṁ sthānaṁ matī matā| tasmāddhi gomatīnāma khyātiṁ loke gamiṣyati||

Because she has come to this place from the celestial path called 'Go' (heaven), and this place is regarded as excellent, she shall become renowned in the world by the name 'Gomati.'

Verse 33 (skanda.7.452.33)

asyā darśanamātreṇa muktiṁ yāsyanti mānavāḥ| kiṁ punaḥ snānadānādi kṛtvā yānti hareḥ padam||

By the mere sight of her, men shall attain liberation; how much more, then, do those who bathe in her and give charity attain the abode of Hari!

Verse 34 (skanda.7.452.34)

tāmeva cārghyaṁ dattvā te yogīndrā īḍire harim| paraṁ puruṣasūktena puruṣaṁ śeṣaśāyinam||

Having offered water of welcome to her, those lords of yogis praised Hari, the supreme Person reclining on Shesha, with the Purusha Sukta.

Verse 35 (skanda.7.452.35)

iti saṁstuvatāṁ teṣāṁ harirāvirbabhūva ha| pītakauśeyavasano vanamālāvibhūṣitaḥ| divyamālyānuliptāṅgo divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ||

As they thus sang his praises, Hari manifested himself — clad in yellow silk garments, adorned with a garland of forest flowers, his limbs anointed with divine garlands, and decorated with celestial ornaments.

Verse 36 (skanda.7.452.36)

śeṣāsanagataṁ devaṁ divyānekodyatāyudham| jvalatkirīṭamukuṭaṁ sphuranmakarakuṇḍalam||

That god sat upon the throne of Shesha, bearing many divine weapons upraised, his crown blazing, his makara-shaped earrings gleaming.

Verse 37 (skanda.7.452.37)

bhaktābhayapradaṁ śāntaṁ śrīvatsāṅkaṁ mahābhujam| sadā prasannavadanaṁ ghanaśyāmaṁ caturbhujam||

He gave fearlessness to his devotees, was ever peaceful, bore the mark of Shrivatsa, had mighty arms, an ever-serene countenance, was dark as a dense rain cloud, and had four arms.

Verse 38 (skanda.7.452.38)

pādasaṁvāhanāsaktalakṣmyā juṣṭaṁ manoharam| taṁ dṛṣṭvā munayaḥ sarve harṣotkarṣasamanvitāḥ| viṣṇuṁ te viṣṇusūktaiśca tuṣṭuvurvedasaṁbhavaiḥ||

That charming god was attended by Lakshmi, devoted to massaging his feet. Beholding him, all the sages were filled with the greatest joy, and they praised Vishnu with the Vishnu hymns that spring from the Vedas.

Verse 39 (skanda.7.452.39)

evaṁ saṁstuvatā teṣāṁ viṣṇurdīnānukampakaḥ| uvāca suprasannena manasā dvijasattamān||

Thus praised by them, Vishnu, compassionate to the lowly, spoke to those foremost brahmins with a heart full of grace:

Verse 40 (skanda.7.452.40)

śrībhagavānuvāca| bhobhoḥ kumārāstuṣṭo'haṁ pradāsyāmi yathepsitam| bhaviṣyatha jñānayutā aspṛṣṭā mama māyayā||

The Lord said: O youths, I am pleased, and I shall grant you your desire. You shall become endowed with knowledge, untouched by my maya.

Verse 41 (skanda.7.452.41)

yasmānmokṣārthibhirviprā jalenāhaṁ prasāditaḥ| tasmādidaṁ paraṁ tīrthaṁ sarvakāmapradaṁ param||

Because brahmins seeking liberation have propitiated me with this water, this shall become a supreme sacred place, the very best, granting every desire.

Verse 42 (skanda.7.452.42)

anugrahāya bhavatāṁ yatra cakraṁ sudarśanam| niḥsṛtaṁ prathamaṁ viprā jalaṁ bhittvā mamāgrataḥ||

O brahmins, that very place where, for your benefit, the discus Sudarshana first emerged, cleaving the water, ahead of me —

Verse 43 (skanda.7.452.43)

cakratīrthamiti khyātaṁ tasmādetadbhaviṣyati| mamāpi niyataṁ vāso bhaviṣyati mahārṇave||

shall become known as Chakra-tirtha; and there in that great ocean shall my abode also be permanently fixed.

Verse 44 (skanda.7.452.44)

ye'tra snānaṁ prakurvanti prasaṅgenāpi mānavāḥ| cakratīrthe dvijaśreṣṭhāsteṣāṁ muktiḥ kare sthitā||

O foremost of brahmins, whoever bathes at Chakra-tirtha, even incidentally, holds liberation already in the palm of his hand.

Verse 45 (skanda.7.452.45)

bhavato'pi sadā hyatra tiṣṭhadhvaṁ ca dvijarṣabhāḥ| vāyubhūtāntarikṣasthāḥ sarvakāmasya dāyakāḥ||

You too, O bulls among brahmins, shall dwell here always, abiding as beings of air in the sky, bestowing all desires upon those who seek them.

Verse 46 (skanda.7.452.46)

prahlāda uvāca| tacchrutvā hṛṣṭamanasaḥ kṛtvārghyaṁ surapāvanīm| avanijya hareḥ pādau mūrdhnā'paścāpyadhārayan||

Prahlada said: Hearing this, they, their hearts filled with joy, offered water of welcome to that purifier of the gods, washed Hari's feet, and then bore that water upon their heads.

Verse 47 (skanda.7.452.47)

prakṣālya sā hareḥ pādau praviṣṭā varuṇālayam| tasminmahāpāpaharā gomatī sāgaraṁ gatā||

Having washed Hari's feet, she entered the abode of Varuna; thus the Gomati, remover of the greatest sins, merged into the ocean.

Verse 48 (skanda.7.452.48)

varaṁ dattvā tato viṣṇustatraivāntaradhīyata| sanakādyā brahmasutāstasthustatra samāhitāḥ||

Having granted the boon, Vishnu vanished from that very place; and Sanaka and the other sons of Brahma remained there, established in meditation.

Verse 49 (skanda.7.452.49)

evaṁ sā gomatī tatra saṁjātā sāgaraṁgamā| sarvapāpaharā proktā pūrvagaṅgeti yā śrutā||

Thus the Gomati, arising there, flowed on to merge with the ocean; she is declared the remover of all sins, and is renowned by the name 'Purva-Ganga' (the earlier Ganga).
