Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 455
The Glory of Bathing at the Gomati-Ocean Confluence and of Chakra-tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.7.455.1)
prahlāda uvāca| mā gacchadhvaṁ suranadīṁ kāliṁdīṁ mā sarasvatīm| gacchadhvaṁ ca dvijaśreṣṭhā gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
Prahlada said: Do not go to the celestial river Ganga, nor to the Kalindi (Yamuna), nor to the Sarasvati; go instead, O foremost of brahmins, to the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.455.2)
prāpyate helayā yatra sarve kāmā na saṁśayaḥ| gomatījalakallolaiḥ krīḍate yatra sāgaraḥ||
There all desires are attained with ease — of this there is no doubt — where the ocean sports with the rippling waves of the Gomati's waters.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.455.3)
pāpaghnaṁ gomatītīraṁ prāpyate puṇyavannaraiḥ| sāgareṇa ca saṁmiśraṁ mahāpātakanāśanam||
The sin-destroying bank of the Gomati is attained only by men of great merit; mingled with the ocean, it becomes a destroyer of the gravest sins.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.455.4)
gomatī saṅgatā yatra sāgareṇa dvijottamāḥ| muktidvāraṁ tu tatproktaṁ kalikāle na saṁśayaḥ||
O best of brahmins, where the Gomati meets the ocean, that place is declared to be the gateway to liberation in the Kali age — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.455.5)
yatpuṇyaṁ labhate tūrṇaṁ gaṅgāsāgarasaṅgame| tatpuṇyaṁ samavāpnoti gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
Whatever merit is swiftly obtained at the confluence of the Ganga and the ocean is fully obtained at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.455.6)
namaskṛtya ca toyeśaṁ gomatīṁ ca saridvarām| arghyaṁ dadyādvidhānena kṛtvā ca karayoḥ kuśān||
Having bowed to the lord of waters and to the Gomati, foremost among rivers, and having taken darbha grass in the hands, one should duly offer the water of welcome.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.455.7)
mantreṇānena viprendrā dadyādarghyaṁ vidhānataḥ| brāhmaṇaiḥ saha saṅgatya sadā tattīrthavāsibhiḥ||
O foremost of brahmins, one should duly offer the water of welcome with this mantra, always in the company of the brahmins who dwell at that sacred place.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.455.8)
bhaktyā cārghyaṁ pradāsyāmi devāya paramātmane| trāhi māṁ pāpinaṁ ghoraṁ namaste sururūpiṇe||
'With devotion I offer this water of welcome to the supreme divine self. Save me, a terrible sinner; salutations to you, who take the form of the gods.'
Verse 9 (skanda.7.455.9)
tīrtharāja namastubhyaṁ ratnākara mahārṇava| gomatyā saha govinda gṛhāṇārghyaṁ namo'stu te||
'O king of sacred places, O treasury of jewels, O great ocean, salutations to you! O Govinda, accept this offering together with the Gomati; salutations to you.'
Verse 10 (skanda.7.455.10)
dattvā cārghyaṁ śikhāṁ baddhvā saṁsmṛtya jalaśāyinam| kuryācca prāṅmukhaḥ snānaṁ tataḥ pratyaṅmukhastathā||
Having offered the water of welcome, tying up the topknot, and calling to mind the Lord who reclines upon the waters, one should bathe facing east, and then facing west as well.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.455.11)
snātvā ca parayā bhaktyā pitṝnsaṁtarpayettataḥ| viśvedevādi sampūjya pitṝṇāṁ śrāddhamācaret||
Having bathed, one should with the deepest devotion offer libations to the ancestors; having worshipped the Vishvedevas and other deities, one should perform the shraddha rite for the ancestors.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.455.12)
yathoktāṁ dakṣiṇāṁ dadyādviṣṇurme prīyatāmiti| viśeṣataḥ pradātavyaṁ suvarṇaṁ viprasattamāḥ||
One should give the prescribed sacrificial fee, saying: 'May Vishnu be pleased with me.' O best of brahmins, gold especially should be given.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.455.13)
daṁpatyorvāsasī caiva kañcukoṣṇīṣameva ca| lakṣmyā saha jagannātho viṣṇurme prīyatāmiti||
One should give garments for both husband and wife, a tunic, and a turban, saying: 'May Vishnu, Lord of the universe, together with Lakshmi, be pleased with me.'
Verse 14 (skanda.7.455.14)
mahādānāni sarvāṇi gomatyudadhisaṅgame| saptadvīpapatirbhūtvā viṣṇuloke mahīyate||
One who performs all the great gifts at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean becomes lord of the seven continents and is glorified in Vishnu's realm.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.455.15)
yastulāpuruṣaṁ dadyādgomatyudadhisaṅgame| saptadvīpapatirbhūtvā viṣṇuloke mahīyate||
Whoever gives the gift of Tulapurusha (weighing oneself against gold) at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean likewise becomes lord of the seven continents and is glorified in Vishnu's realm.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.455.16)
ātmānaṁ tolayedyastu svarṇena rajatena vā| vastrairvā kuṅkumairvāpi phalairvāpi tathā rasaiḥ||
Whoever weighs himself against gold, or silver, or garments, or saffron, or fruits, or liquid essences —
Verse 17 (skanda.7.455.17)
bhuktvā bhogānsuvipulāṁstathā kāmānmanoharān| sampūjyamānastridaśairyāti viṣṇvālayaṁ naraḥ||
having enjoyed abundant pleasures and delightful desires, that man, honoured by the gods, goes to Vishnu's abode.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.455.18)
hiraṇyarūpyadānaṁ ca hyaśvaṁ dhenuṁ tathaiva ca| gomatīsaṅgame dattvā sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt||
Giving gifts of gold, silver, a horse, and a cow at the confluence of the Gomati, one obtains all one's desires.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.455.19)
bhūmidānaṁ ca yo dadyādgomatyudadhisaṅgame| snātvā śucirhariṁ smṛtvā tasmāddhanyataro nahi||
There is none more blessed than one who, having bathed and become pure at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean, calls Hari to mind and gives the gift of land.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.455.20)
kanyādānaṁ ca yaḥ kuryādvidyādānamathāpi vā| gomatyāḥ saṅgame snātvā yāti brahmapadaṁ naraḥ||
Whoever gives a daughter in marriage or gives the gift of learning, having bathed at the confluence of the Gomati, attains the state of Brahman.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.455.21)
yo dadyātsvarṇadhenuṁ ca ghṛtadhenuṁ samāhitaḥ| brahmāṇḍadānamapi vā tasya puṇyamanaṁtakam||
Whoever, with a focused mind, gives a cow of gold, a cow of ghee, or even the gift of the cosmic egg (Brahmanda-dana), his merit becomes boundless.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.455.22)
tathā lavaṇadhenuṁ ca jaladhenumathāpi vā| dattvā yāti paraṁ sthānaṁ gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
Likewise, having given a cow of salt or a cow of water at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean, one attains the supreme abode.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.455.23)
yugādiṣu ca sarveṣu gomatyudadhisaṅgame| snātvā saṁtarpya ca pitṝnakṣayaṁ lokamāpnuyāt||
On all the yugadi days (marking the start of the ages), having bathed at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean and offered libations to the ancestors, one attains the imperishable realm.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.455.24)
āṣāḍhyāṁ ca tathā māghyāṁ kārtikyāṁ saṅgame naraḥ| pitṝṇāṁ tarpaṇaṁ snānaṁ śrāddhaṁ pāvakapūjanam| kuryāccaiva tathā dānaṁ yadīcchedakṣayaṁ padam||
During Ashadha, Magha, and Kartika, at the confluence, a man should perform libations to the ancestors, bathing, shraddha, worship of the sacred fire, and charity, if he desires the imperishable state.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.455.25)
pitṝṇāṁ cākṣayā tṛptirgayāśrāddhena vai yathā| tadvacchrāddhānmahābhāga gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
Just as the ancestors receive imperishable satisfaction through the shraddha rite at Gaya, O illustrious one, so too through shraddha performed at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.455.26)
kuryātsnānaṁ tathā dānaṁ pitṝṇāṁ tarpaṇaṁ tathā| pañcakāsu dvijaśreṣṭhāstathā caivāṣṭakāsu ca||
O foremost of brahmins, one should perform bathing, charity, and libations to the ancestors during the panchaka days, and likewise during the ashtaka days.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.455.27)
vaidhṛtau ca vyatīpāte chāyāyāṁ kuñjarasya ca| ṣaṣṭhyāṁ ca kapilākhyāyāṁ tathā hi dvādaśīṣu ca||
During the Vaidhriti and Vyatipata yogas, at the time of the elephant's shadow (Gajachhaya), on Kapila Shashthi, and also on the twelfth lunar days,
Verse 28 (skanda.7.455.28)
gomatyāṁ saṅgame snātvā dadyāddānaṁ viśeṣataḥ| nirmalaṁ sthānamāpnoti yatra gatvā na śocati||
having bathed at the confluence of the Gomati, one should give charity in particular; thereby one attains that pure realm, going to which one grieves no more.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.455.29)
śrāddhapakṣe tvamāvāsyāṁ gomatyudadhisaṅgame| helayā prāpyate puṇyaṁ dattvā piṇḍaṁ gayāsamam||
During the ancestral fortnight, on the new-moon day, offering the ancestral rice-balls at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean easily earns merit equal to that of Gaya.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.455.30)
tasmātsarvaṁ prayatnena tvamāvāsyāṁ dvijottamāḥ| śrāddhaṁ hi pitṛpakṣānte kāryaṁ gomatisaṅgame||
Therefore, O best of brahmins, everything should be done with diligence on the new-moon day; shraddha must certainly be performed at the confluence of the Gomati at the end of the ancestral fortnight.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.455.31)
yadyapyaśrotriyaṁ śrāddhaṁ yadyapyupahataṁ bhavet| pakṣaśrāddhakṛtaṁ puṇyaṁ dinenaikena labhyate||
Even if the shraddha lacks a Vedically learned brahmin, or is in some way flawed, still the merit of the entire fortnight's shraddha is obtained in a single day.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.455.32)
śraddhāhīnaṁ mantrahīnaṁ pātrahīnamathāpi vā| dravyahīnaṁ kālahīnaṁ manasaḥ svāsthyavarjitam||
Even if a shraddha is lacking in faith, lacking in proper mantras, lacking a worthy recipient, or lacking in materials, timing, or a settled state of mind —
Verse 33 (skanda.7.455.33)
śrāddhapakṣe hyamāyāṁ tu gomatyudadhisaṅgame| paripūrṇaṁ bhavetsarvaṁ pitṝṇāṁ tṛptirakṣayā||
even so, performed during the ancestral fortnight, on the new moon, at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean, it becomes complete in every way, and the ancestors receive imperishable satisfaction.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.455.34)
gomatī kamalā caiva caṁdrabhāgā tathaiva ca| tisrastu saṅgatā nadyaḥ praviṣṭā varuṇālayam||
The Gomati, the Kamala, and the Chandrabhaga — these three rivers, joined together, enter the abode of Varuna.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.455.35)
gayāyāṁ piṇḍadānena prayāge hyasthipātane| tatpuṇyaṁ samavāpnoti pakṣānte śrāddhakṛnnaraḥ||
The merit obtained by offering rice-balls at Gaya and by immersing bones at Prayaga is fully obtained by a man who performs shraddha at the end of the fortnight here.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.455.36)
yadīcchetsarvatīrtheṣu helayā tvabhiṣecanam| snānaṁ kurvīta bhaktyā vai gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
If one desires, with ease, the consecration obtained at all sacred places, one should bathe with devotion at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.455.37)
pakṣepakṣe samagrā tu pitṛpūjā kṛtā ca yaiḥ| sampūrṇā jāyate teṣāṁ gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
For those who have performed the full worship of the ancestors in every fortnight, it becomes complete at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.455.38)
śrāddhe kṛte tvamāvasyāṁ pitṛpakṣe ca vai dvijāḥ| aputrā caiva yā nārī kākavaṁdhyā ca yā bhavet||
O brahmins, when shraddha has been performed on the new-moon day during the ancestral fortnight, a woman who is childless, or who is 'kakavandhya' (bears only a single child) —
Verse 39 (skanda.7.455.39)
mṛtaputrā tathā viprāḥ saṅgame snānamācaret| doṣaiḥ pramucyate sarvairgomatyudadhisaṅgame| snātvā sukhamavāpnoti prajāṁ ca cirajīvinīm||
or whose children have died — O brahmins, she should bathe at the confluence; bathing at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean, she is freed from all these afflictions, and obtains happiness and long-lived offspring.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.455.40)
yāni kāni ca dānāni pṛthivyāṁ sambhavanti hi| tāni sarvāṇi deyāni gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
Whatever kinds of gifts exist upon this earth, all of them should be given at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.455.41)
sarvadaiva ca viprendrā viśeṣātsarvaparvasu| snānaṁ kurvīta niyato gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
O foremost of brahmins, always, and especially on all festival days, one should regularly bathe at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.455.42)
darśanādeva pāpasya kṣayo bhavati bho dvijāḥ| praṇāme manasastuṣṭirmuktiścaivāvagāhane||
O brahmins, by the mere sight of it, sin is destroyed; by bowing, the mind finds contentment; and by immersion, liberation itself is attained.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.455.43)
śrāddhe kṛte pitṝṇāṁ tu tṛptirbhavati śāśvatī| dāne manorathāvāptirjāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ||
By performing shraddha, the ancestors obtain everlasting satisfaction; by giving charity, one's heartfelt wishes are fulfilled — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.455.44)
kṛtakṛtyāstu te dhanyā yaiḥ kṛtaṁ pitṛtarpaṇam| śrāddhaṁ ca ṛṣiśārdūlā gomatyudadhisaṅgame||
O foremost of sages, blessed and fulfilled indeed are those who have performed libations and shraddha for their ancestors at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.455.45)
pitṛpakṣe ca vai kecinmātṛpakṣe tathaiva ca| tathā śvaśurapakṣe ca ye cānye mitrabāṁdhavāḥ||
Whether in the paternal lineage, or the maternal lineage, or the lineage of one's father-in-law, or among other friends and kinsmen —
Verse 46 (skanda.7.455.46)
sthāvaratvaṁ gatā ye ca pudgalatvaṁ ca ye gatāḥ| piśācatvaṁ gatā ye ca ye ca pretatvamāgatāḥ||
those who have attained the state of immobile beings, those who have become mere inert matter, those who have become pishachas (malevolent spirits), and those who have become ghosts —
Verse 47 (skanda.7.455.47)
those who have entered the animal kingdom, and those who have become insects — all of these attain liberation merely by this bathing, of this there is no doubt.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.455.48)
kiṁ punaḥ śrāddhadānādi gomatīsaṅgame tathā| kṛtvā muktimavāpnoti mānavo nātra saṁśayaḥ||
How much more, then, does a man attain liberation by performing shraddha, charity, and the like at the confluence of the Gomati — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.455.49)
śravaṇadvādaśīyoge gomatyudadhisaṅgame| snātvā muktimavāpnoti yatra gatvā na śocati||
By bathing at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean when the twelfth lunar day coincides with the Shravana asterism, one attains liberation, reaching that state where one grieves no more.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.455.50)
santyajya sarvatīrthāni gomatyudadhisaṅgame| snānaṁ kṛtvā tathā śrāddhaṁ kṛtakṛtyo bhavennaraḥ| paraṁ lokamavāpnoti hyarcayitvā tu vāmanam||
Setting aside all other sacred places, having bathed and performed shraddha at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean, a man becomes fulfilled in all his purposes; having worshipped Vamana, he attains the supreme realm.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.455.51)
samyaksnātvā naro yastu pūjayedgaruḍadhvajam| pītāṁbaradharo bhūtvā divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ||
That man who, having bathed properly, worships the bearer of the Garuda banner, clad in yellow garments and adorned with divine ornaments —
Verse 52 (skanda.7.455.52)
vīkṣyamāṇaḥ surastrībhirnāgārikṛtaketanaḥ| caturbhujadharo bhūtvā vanamālāvibhūṣitaḥ| saṁstūyamāno munibhiryāti viṣṇvālayaṁ naraḥ||
gazed upon by celestial nymphs, bearing the banner of the enemy of serpents (Garuda), four-armed and adorned with a garland of forest flowers, praised by the sages, that man goes to Vishnu's abode.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.455.53)
gomatīsaṅgame snātvā kṛtakṛtyo bhavennaraḥ| yatra daityavadhaṁ kṛtvā viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā||
Bathing at the confluence of the Gomati, a man becomes fulfilled in all his purposes — at that very place where the all-powerful Vishnu slew a demon,
Verse 54 (skanda.7.455.54)
cakraṁ prakṣālitaṁ pūrvaṁ kṛṣṇena svayameva hi| tenaiva cakratīrthaṁ hi khyātaṁ lokatraye dvijāḥ||
and where Krishna himself once washed his discus — for that very reason, O brahmins, it became renowned throughout the three worlds as Chakra-tirtha.
Verse 55 (skanda.7.455.55)
bhavanti yatra pāṣāṇāścakrāṅkā muktidāyakāḥ| yaiḥ pūjitairjagannāthaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ sāṁnidhyamāvrajet||
There, stones marked with the discus are found, granting liberation, through worship of which one attains the very presence of Krishna, Lord of the universe.
Verse 56 (skanda.7.455.56)
tatraiva yadi labhyeta cakrairdvādaśabhiḥ saha||
If, in that very place, a stone marked with twelve discuses is obtained,
Verse 57 (skanda.7.455.57)
dvādaśātmā sa vijñeyo mokṣadaḥ sarvadehinām| ekacakrāṅkito yastu dvāravatyāṁ suśobhanaḥ||
that should be recognized as the twelve-fold form, bestowing liberation upon all embodied beings. That beautiful stone in Dvaraka marked with a single discus —
Verse 58 (skanda.7.455.58)
sudarśanābhidhāno'sau mokṣaikaphalado hi saḥ| lakṣmīnārāyaṇo dvābhyāṁ bhuktimuktiphalapradaḥ||
is named Sudarshana, and grants liberation as its sole fruit. The one marked with two discuses is Lakshmi-Narayana, granting the fruit of both worldly enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 59 (skanda.7.455.59)
tribhistrivikramaścaiva trivargaphaladāyakaḥ| śrīprado ripuhantā ca caturbhiḥ saṁyutaḥ sa hi||
The one marked with three is Trivikrama, granting the fruit of the threefold aims of life (dharma, artha, kama). The one endowed with four grants prosperity and destroys enemies.
Verse 60 (skanda.7.455.60)
pañcabhirvāsudevastu janmamṛtyubhayāpahaḥ| pradyumnaḥ ṣaḍbhirevāsau lakṣmīṁ kāntiṁ dadāti yaḥ||
The one with five is Vasudeva, who removes the fear of birth and death. The one with six is Pradyumna, who bestows prosperity and radiance.
Verse 61 (skanda.7.455.61)
saptabhirbalabhadraśca cakrago'tra prakīrtitaḥ| lāñchitaścāṣṭabhirbhaktiṁ dadāti puruṣottamaḥ||
The one with seven, bearing the discus mark, is declared to be Balabhadra. The one marked with eight is Purushottama, who bestows devotion.
Verse 62 (skanda.7.455.62)
sarvaṁ dadyānnavavyūho durlabho yaḥ surairapi| daśāvatāro daśamī rājyado nātra saṁśayaḥ||
The one with nine, called Navavyuha, grants everything — rare even for the gods. The one with ten, called Dashavatara, undoubtedly grants sovereignty.
Verse 63 (skanda.7.455.63)
ekādaśabhiraiśvaryaṁ cakragaḥ samprayacchati| nirvāṇaṁ dvādaśātmā ca dvādaśabhirdadāti ca||
The discus-marked stone with eleven bestows lordship, and the twelve-fold form, marked with twelve discuses, grants nirvana.
Verse 64 (skanda.7.455.64)
ata ūrdhvaṁ mahābhāgāḥ saukhyamokṣapradāyakāḥ| yato'tra te ca pāṣāṇāḥ kṛṣṇacakreṇa citritāḥ||
Beyond this, O illustrious ones, all such stones bestow both happiness and liberation, since here they are marked by Krishna's very discus.
Verse 65 (skanda.7.455.65)
teṣāṁ sparśanamātreṇa mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ| cakratīrthe naraḥ snātvā kṛṣṇacakreṇa cihnitaḥ||
Merely by touching them, a man is freed from all sins. Bathing at Chakra-tirtha, a man becomes marked by Krishna's own discus.
Verse 66 (skanda.7.455.66)
Having worshipped Hari, the discus-bearer, and meditated upon the eternal one, such a man is never born without sons, without wealth, or afflicted by illness.
Verse 67 (skanda.7.455.67)
brahmahatyādikaṁ pāpaṁ manovākkāyakarmajam| tatsarvaṁ vilayaṁ yāti sakṛccakrāṅkadarśanāt||
The sin of killing a brahmin and other such sins, and sins born of actions performed by mind, speech, and body — all of it is destroyed by a single sight of the discus mark.
Verse 68 (skanda.7.455.68)
mleccha deśe śubhe vāpi cakrāṅko dṛśyate yadi| tatra caiva harikṣetraṁ muktidaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ||
Whether in a foreign land or in an auspicious country, wherever the discus mark is seen, that place is itself Hari's sacred field, bestowing liberation — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 69 (skanda.7.455.69)
mṛtyukāle'pi samprāpte yadi dhyāyeddhariṁ naraḥ| cakrāṅkaṁ dhārayedaṅge sa yāti paramaṁ padam||
Even when the time of death has come, if a man meditates upon Hari and bears the discus mark upon his body, he attains the supreme state.
Verse 70 (skanda.7.455.70)
hṛdayasthe ca cakrāṅke pūto bhavati tatkṣaṇāt| nopasarpanti taṁ bhītā dūtāḥ kṛṣṇāyudhaṁ tadā| vaiṣṇavaṁ lokamāpnoti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā||
With the discus mark upon his heart, a man becomes pure that very instant; then, in fear of Krishna's weapon, the messengers of death do not even approach him; he attains the realm of Vishnu — no doubt need be entertained about this.
Verse 71 (skanda.7.455.71)
api pāpasamācāraḥ kiṁ punardhārmikaḥ śuciḥ| gomatī saṅgame snātvā cakratīrthe tathaiva ca| mucyate pātakairghorairmānavo nātra saṁśayaḥ||
Even a person of sinful conduct — how much more a righteous and pure one — is freed of the most terrible sins by bathing at the confluence of the Gomati and at Chakra-tirtha; of this there is no doubt.
Verse 72 (skanda.7.455.72)
rājasāḥ sattvamāyānti viṣṇudharmaṁ sanātanam| kṣetrasya tasya māhātmyātsatyametatprakīrtitam||
Through the greatness of that sacred field, even those of passionate nature attain the quality of purity and reach the eternal dharma of Vishnu — this truth has been declared.
Verse 73 (skanda.7.455.73)
tāmasaṁ rājasaṁ cāpi yatkiñcidviṣṇupūjane| tacca sattvatvamāyāti nimnagā ca yathārṇave||
Whatever tamasic or rajasic quality is present in the worship of Vishnu is transformed into sattvic purity, just as a river, flowing down, merges wholly into the ocean.
Verse 74 (skanda.7.455.74)
durlabhā dvārakā vipra durlabhaṁ gomatījalam| durlabhaṁ jāgaro rātrau durlabhaṁ kṛṣṇadarśanam||
O brahmin, rare is Dvaraka, rare is the water of the Gomati, rare is keeping vigil through the night, and rare is the sight of Krishna.
