Chapter 460All chaptersChapter 462

Verse 1 (skanda.7.461.1)

śrīprahlāda uvāca| santyanekāni tīrthāni bahvāścaryakarāṇi ca| prāpte kaliyuge ghore tāni pupluvirerṇave||

Shri Prahlada said: There are many sacred places here, most wondrous indeed; when the terrible Kali age arrived, they had all sunk beneath the ocean.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.461.2)

uddeśato mayā viprāḥ kīrtyamānā nibodhata| saṁkṣepato vipravarā yathā teṣāṁ ca yāḥ kriyāḥ||

O brahmins, listen as I briefly describe them by name; O best of brahmins, I shall describe them and their rites in summary.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.461.3)

saṁhṛtya ca bhuvo bhāraṁ sādhūnsaṁsthāpya satpathe| dvāravatyāmagātkṛṣṇo vṛṣṇisaṁghaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ||

Having removed the burden of the earth and established the righteous upon the good path, Krishna, surrounded by hosts of the Vrishni clan, went to Dvaravati.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.461.4)

darśanārthaṁ tadā brahmā daivataiḥ parivāritaḥ| varuṇo yamavitteśau sūryācandramasau tathā||

Then, for the sake of beholding him, Brahma came, surrounded by the gods, and so too did Varuna, Yama, Kubera, the Sun, and the Moon.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.461.5)

āgatya saha kṛṣṇena kāryaṁ saṁsādhya cātmanaḥ| vedhāścakre tadā tīrthaṁ svanāmnā kīrtitaṁ bhuvi||

Coming to Krishna and accomplishing his own purpose, Brahma then made a sacred place, which became renowned on earth by his own name.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.461.6)

brahmakuṇḍamiti khyātaṁ sarvapāpaharaṁ śubham| tattīre sthāpayāmāsa sahasrakiraṇaṁ prabhum||

It became known as 'Brahmakunda,' auspicious and destructive of all sin. On its bank, the thousand-rayed lord (the Sun) was installed.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.461.7)

mūlaṁ surāṇāṁ hi kila brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ| tena saṁsthāpitaṁ yasmānmūla sthānamiti smṛtam||

Brahma, grandsire of the worlds, is indeed the root of the gods; because it was established by him, it is remembered by the name 'Mulasthana' (the root-place).

Verse 8 (skanda.7.461.8)

brahmatīrthaṁ tu taddṛṣṭvā candraścakre tataḥ saraḥ| taḍāgaṁ candranāmnā vai sarvapāpapraṇāśanam||

Seeing that sacred place of Brahma, the Moon likewise made a lake — a pool named after himself, destructive of every sin.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.461.9)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā tejasā yuktaṁ saṁhṛṣṭāḥ surasattamāḥ| ūcuste lokasraṣṭāraṁ śṛṇuṣva vacanaṁ hi naḥ||

Seeing it radiant, the best of gods, rejoicing, said to the creator of the worlds: 'Hear our word.'

Verse 10 (skanda.7.461.10)

yo'tra snānaṁ prakurute pitṝnsantarpayiṣyati| pūjayiṣyati deveśaṁ mūlasthānaṁ surarṣabha||

'O bull among gods, whoever bathes here, offers libations to the ancestors, and worships the lord of gods and Mulasthana,'

Verse 11 (skanda.7.461.11)

sarvapāpavinirmukto dhanadhānyasamanvitaḥ| saptamyāṁ māghamāsasya śuklapakṣe dvijarṣabhāḥ||

O bulls among brahmins, he becomes freed of all sin and blessed with wealth and grain, especially on the seventh day of the bright fortnight of Magha,

Verse 12 (skanda.7.461.12)

yo'tra snānaṁ prakurute mānavo bhaktisaṁyutaḥ| mūlasthānaṁ ca deveśa saṁsnāpya pravilepayet||

That man who, filled with devotion, bathes here, and bathes and anoints the lord of gods, Mulasthana,

Verse 13 (skanda.7.461.13)

pūjayiṣyati vastrādyaiḥ svaśaktyā bhūṣaṇaistathā| puṣpadhūpādibhiścaiva naivedyena ca mānavaḥ||

and worships him with garments, ornaments, flowers, incense, and food offerings according to his means,

Verse 14 (skanda.7.461.14)

sarvānkāmānavāpnoti brahmalokaṁ sa gacchati||

he obtains all his desires and goes to the realm of Brahma.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.461.15)

sāvitrīṁ ca tato dṛṣṭvā brahmaṇā sthāpitāṁ ca vai| kṛtvā cāyatanaṁ divyaṁ svāṁ mūrtiṁ sanniveśya ca| nāma cakre tadā devyāḥ svayaṁ tasyāḥ pitāmahaḥ||

Then, having seen Savitri, whom Brahma had established there, and having built a divine shrine and installed his own image within it, the grandsire himself named that goddess.

Verse 16 (skanda.7.461.16)

yaḥ paśyati svayaṁ bhaktyā kṛṣṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā jagatpatim| sāvitrīṁ sa sukhī bhūtvā sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt||

Whoever, with devotion, beholds the Lord of the universe, Krishna, and likewise beholds Savitri herself, becomes happy and obtains all his desires.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.461.17)

āyurārogyamaiśvaryaṁ putrasantānameva ca| na daurbhāgyaṁ bhavettasya na dāridyaṁ na mūrkhatā| na ca vyādhibhayaṁ tasya yaḥ paśyati vidhiṁ naraḥ||

That man who beholds Vidhi (Brahma) obtains longevity, health, prosperity, and offspring; he suffers neither misfortune, nor poverty, nor foolishness, nor the fear of disease.

Verse 18 (skanda.7.461.18)

gatvā saṁsnāpayeddevīṁ kuṅkumena kusuṁbhakaiḥ| saṁchādya vastraiḥ sampūjya puṣpairnānāvidhaistathā||

Going there, one should bathe the goddess with saffron and safflower, cover her with garments, and worship her with flowers of many kinds.

Verse 19 (skanda.7.461.19)

naivedyaphalatāmbūlagrīvāsūtrakadīpakaiḥ| sampūjya parayā bhaktyā yātrāṁ ca saphalā labhet||

With food offerings, fruit, betel leaf, a necklace, and lamps, one should worship with the deepest devotion, and thereby make the pilgrimage fruitful.

Verse 20 (skanda.7.461.20)

na vaidhavyaṁ na daurbhāgyaṁ na vaṁdhyā na mṛtaprajā| vidhirdṛṣṭo narairyaistu kule teṣāṁ prajāyate||

In the lineage of those men who have beheld Vidhi (Brahma), there occurs no widowhood, no misfortune, no barrenness, and no death of offspring.

Verse 21 (skanda.7.461.21)

tasmātsarvaprayatnena vidhiṁ paśyetsubhāvataḥ| parituṣṭo bhavetkṛṣṇo yātrā ca saphalā bhavet||

Therefore, with the fullest effort and with a good heart, one should behold Vidhi; thereby Krishna becomes greatly pleased, and the pilgrimage becomes fruitful.

Verse 22 (skanda.7.461.22)

prahlāda uvāca| brahmaṇā sthāpitaṁ dṛṣṭvā saraḥ paramaśobhanam| indraścakre mahābhāgaḥ saraḥ paramaśobhanam||

Prahlada said: Seeing that most beautiful lake established by Brahma, the illustrious Indra likewise made a most beautiful lake.

Verse 23 (skanda.7.461.23)

sthāpayāmāsa deveśo liṅgamapratimaujasam| tasminsnātvā ca labhate yasmādindrapadaṁ naraḥ||

That lord of gods installed there a Shivalinga of unparalleled splendour, bathing near which a man obtains the position of Indra.

Verse 24 (skanda.7.461.24)

tasmādindrapadaṁ nāma suprasiddhaṁ dharātale| indreṇa sthāpitaṁ liṅgaṁ yasmādbhāvanayā saha| prasiddhamindranāmnā vā indreśvaramiti smṛtam||

Therefore it is renowned on earth by the name 'Indrapada.' Since this Shivalinga was installed by Indra with devotion, it is also remembered by the name 'Indreshvara,' after him.

Verse 25 (skanda.7.461.25)

yasya prasiddhiratulā vṛddhiliṅgamiti dvijāḥ| yasya darśanamātreṇa mucyate sarvapātakaiḥ||

O brahmins, its fame is incomparable, and it is also known as 'Vriddhilinga'; merely by beholding it, one is freed from all sins.

Verse 26 (skanda.7.461.26)

pitṝṇāmakṣayā tṛptirjāyate dvijasattamāḥ| aṣṭamyāṁ ca caturddaśyāṁ snātvā cendrapade naraḥ||

O best of brahmins, the ancestors receive imperishable satisfaction; a man who bathes at Indrapada on the eighth and fourteenth lunar days,

Verse 27 (skanda.7.461.27)

indreśvaraṁ ca sampūjya yāti muktipadaṁ naraḥ| viśeṣatastu sampūjyo makarasthe divākare||

and worships Indreshvara, attains the state of liberation. He is especially worthy of worship when the sun enters Capricorn,

Verse 28 (skanda.7.461.28)

uttarāyaṇasaṁkrāntau liṅgapūraṇakena hi| śivarātrau viśeṣeṇa sampūjya umayā saha| rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā paramaṁ lokamāpnuyāt||

at the solstice of Uttarayana, with the rite of Lingapurana; and especially on Shivaratri, worshipping him together with Uma, and keeping vigil through the night, a man attains the supreme realm.

Verse 29 (skanda.7.461.29)

prahlāda uvāca| brahmatīrthaṁ ca taddṛṣṭvā tathā śakrasarobhavam| darśayanviṣṇunā sārddhamekarūpatvamāpnuyāt||

Prahlada said: Seeing that sacred place of Brahma and the lake made by Indra, displaying oneness with Vishnu,

Verse 30 (skanda.7.461.30)

saraścakāra deveśo bhagavānpārvatīpatiḥ| sumṛṣṭanirmalajalaṁ nalinīdalaśobhitam||

The lord of gods, the great Lord, husband of Parvati (Shiva), also made a lake, its water exceedingly clear and pure, adorned with lotus leaves.

Verse 31 (skanda.7.461.31)

utpalaiḥ sarvataśchannaṁ saraḥ sārasaśobhitam| tadagādhajalaṁ dṛṣṭvā svayameva pinākadhṛk| sabrahmaviṣṇunā sārddhaṁ snātastatra vṛṣadhvajaḥ||

Seeing that lake, its deep waters covered everywhere with blue lotuses and adorned with cranes, Shiva, bearer of the Pinaka bow, together with Brahma and Vishnu, bathed there himself.

Verse 32 (skanda.7.461.32)

te devāstatsaro dṛṣṭvā brahmaviṣṇusurā'surāḥ| ūcuḥ sarve susaṁhṛṣṭā vīkṣantaḥ pārvatīpatim||

Beholding that lake, Brahma, Vishnu, the gods, and the demons, all greatly rejoicing, gazing upon the husband of Parvati, said:

Verse 33 (skanda.7.461.33)

yasmātkṛtamidaṁ devā īśvareṇa mahatsaraḥ| mahādeva saronāma suprasiddhaṁ bhaviṣyati||

'O gods, since this great lake has been made by the Lord (Ishvara), it shall become renowned by the name "Mahadeva Sar."'

Verse 34 (skanda.7.461.34)

yo'tra snānaṁ prakurute pitṝṇāṁ tarpaṇaṁ tathā| śrāddhaṁ pitṝṇāṁ bhaktyā ca sa gacchetparamāṁ gatim||

Whoever bathes here, offers libations to the ancestors, and devotedly performs the shraddha rite for the ancestors, attains the supreme destiny.

Verse 35 (skanda.7.461.35)

suprasannā bhaviṣyanti sarve devā na saṁśayaḥ| darśanātpāpanirmukto mahādevasarasya ca||

All the gods will become greatly pleased — of this there is no doubt; by the mere sight of Mahadeva-sar, a man is freed of sin.

Verse 36 (skanda.7.461.36)

maheśasya ca taddṛṣṭvā saraḥ paramaśobhanam| cakāra pārvatī tatra saraścāpratimaṁ tathā||

Seeing that most beautiful lake of Mahesha, Parvati too made an incomparable lake there.

Verse 37 (skanda.7.461.37)

gaurīsara iti khyātaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam| tatra snātvā naro bhaktyā na durgatimavāpnuyāt||

It became known as 'Gaurisara,' destructive of every sin; a man who bathes there with devotion never comes to a bad end.

Verse 38 (skanda.7.461.38)

na daurbhāgyaṁ striyaścaiva na vaidhavyaṁ kadācana| snātvā gaurītīrthavare sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt||

Women suffer neither misfortune nor ever widowhood; bathing at that excellent sacred place of Gauri, a person obtains all their desires.

Verse 39 (skanda.7.461.39)

varuṇaśca tato dṛṣṭvā puṇyānyāyatanāni ca| cakāra ca saro divyaṁ viṣṇubhaktisamanvitaḥ||

Then Varuna too, seeing those meritorious shrines, filled with devotion to Vishnu, made a divine lake.

Verse 40 (skanda.7.461.40)

nāmnā varuṇapadaṁ tacca pāpakṣayakaraṁ bhuvi| nabhasye paurṇamāsyāṁ ca saṁtarpya pitṛdevatāḥ||

It is named 'Varunapada' and destroys sin upon this earth. On the full moon of Nabhasya, having offered libations to the ancestors and the gods,

Verse 41 (skanda.7.461.41)

śrāddhaṁ kṛtvā vidhānena pitṝṇāṁ śraddhayānvitaḥ| uttamaṁ lokamāpnoti yatra gatvā na śocati||

and duly performing, with faith, the shraddha rite for the ancestors, a man attains that excellent realm, going to which he grieves no more.

Verse 42 (skanda.7.461.42)

pradadyādudakumbhāṁśca dadhyodanasamanvitān| gāśca vāsāṁsi ratnāni viṣṇurme prīyatāmiti||

One should give pitchers of water together with curd-rice, cows, garments, and jewels, saying: 'May Vishnu be pleased with me.'

Verse 43 (skanda.7.461.43)

saro dṛṣṭvā jaleśasya saraścakre dhaneśvaraḥ| yakṣādhipasaronāma suprasiddhaṁ dharātale||

Seeing the lake of the lord of waters (Varuna), the lord of wealth (Kubera) likewise made a lake, renowned on earth by the name 'Yakshadhipasara' (the lake of the lord of yakshas).

Verse 44 (skanda.7.461.44)

tathā tatra naro bhaktyā sampūjya pitṛdevatāḥ| sarvānkāmānavāpnoti dadyādvastradvijātaye||

There too, a man, devotedly worshipping the ancestors and the gods, obtains all his desires, and should give garments to a brahmin.

Verse 45 (skanda.7.461.45)

prahlāda uvāca| viṣṇuṁ varapradaṁ śrutvā bhrātṝṇāṁ brahmanandanāḥ| maṁdākinī vasiṣṭhena samānītā dharātale||

Prahlada said: Hearing that Vishnu is the bestower of boons, the sons of Brahma, brothers together, and Mandakini, brought down to earth by Vasishtha,

Verse 46 (skanda.7.461.46)

ambarīṣādayaḥ sarva ājagmuḥ kṛṣṇapālitām| dvāravatyāṁ ca te dṛṣṭvā gomatīṁ sāgaraṁgamām||

Ambarisha and the others all came to that city protected by Krishna, and, in Dvaravati, beheld the Gomati merging with the ocean,

Verse 47 (skanda.7.461.47)

tīrthāni devatānāṁ ca puṇyānyāyatanāni ca| tīrthaṁ pañcanadaṁ cakruḥ prajānāṁ patayastathā||

and the sacred sites and meritorious shrines of the gods; and those lords of creatures made there the sacred place of Panchanada.

Verse 48 (skanda.7.461.48)

pañca nadyaḥ samāhūtāstatrājagmuḥ surānvitāḥ| marīcaye gomatī ca lakṣmaṇā cātraye tathā||

Five rivers were summoned, and they came there, together with the gods — Gomati for Marichi, Lakshmana for Atri,

Verse 49 (skanda.7.461.49)

candrabhāgā cāṅgirase pulahāya kuśāvatī| pāvanārthaṁ jāmbavatī jagāma kratave tathā||

Chandrabhaga for Angiras, Kushavati for Pulaha, and Jambavati, for the sake of purification, went for Kratu.

Verse 50 (skanda.7.461.50)

tāsu snātvā mahābhāgā brahmaputrā yaśasvinaḥ| nāma tasya tadā cakruḥ pañcanadyaśca tāpasāḥ||

Bathing in these, those illustrious, renowned sons of Brahma, those ascetics, then gave it the name 'Panchanadi' (the five rivers).

Verse 51 (skanda.7.461.51)

tasmātpañcanadaṁ tīrthaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam| snātavyaṁ tatra manujaiḥ svargamokṣārthibhistadā||

Therefore Panchanada is a sacred place that destroys all sins; men desiring heaven and liberation should bathe there.

Verse 52 (skanda.7.461.52)

tatra gatvā suniyato gṛhītvārghyaṁ phalena hi| mantreṇānena vai viprā dadyādarghyaṁ vidhānataḥ||

Going there, well restrained, taking up the water of welcome with a fruit, O brahmins, one should duly offer the water of welcome with this mantra:

Verse 53 (skanda.7.461.53)

brahmaputraiḥ samānītāḥ pañcaitāḥ saritāṁ varāḥ| gṛhṇantvarghyamimaṁ devyaḥ sarvapāpapraśāṁtaye||

'These five excellent rivers, brought by the sons of Brahma — O goddesses, accept this offering for the quelling of all sin.'

Verse 54 (skanda.7.461.54)

ityarghyamantraḥ| snānaṁ kṛtvā vidhānena pitṝnsaṁtarppayennaraḥ| śrāddhaṁ kuryādvidhānena śraddhayā parayā yutaḥ||

[Thus is the offering mantra.] Having duly bathed, a man should offer libations to the ancestors, and, filled with the deepest faith, duly perform the shraddha rite.

Verse 55 (skanda.7.461.55)

pañcaratnaṁ tato deyaṁ saptadhānyaṁ dvijātaye| dīnāndhakṛpaṇānāṁ ca dānaṁ dadyātsvaśaktitaḥ||

One should then give the five gems and the seven grains to a brahmin, and give charity to the poor, the blind, and the destitute according to one's means.

Verse 56 (skanda.7.461.56)

sarvānkāmānavāpnoti viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati| putrapautrasamāyuktaḥ paraṁ sukhamavāpnuyāt||
