Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 473
The Glory of the Dvadashi Night Vigil
Verse 1 (skanda.7.473.1)
śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| prahlādaṁ sarvadharmajñaṁ vedaśāstrārthapāragam| vaiṣṇavāgamatattvajñaṁ bhagavadbhaktitatparam
Shri Markandeya said: Prahlada, knower of all dharmas, versed in the meaning of the Vedas and scriptures, expert in the truths of the Vaishnava scriptures, devoted to devotion to the Lord —
Verse 2 (skanda.7.473.2)
sukhāsīnaṁ mahāprājñamṛṣayo draṣṭumāgatāḥ| sarvaśāstrārthatattvajñāḥ svadharmapratipālakāḥ
to see that greatly wise one seated comfortably, sages came who knew the essential meaning of all scriptures and who upheld their own dharma.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.473.3)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| vinā jñānādvinā dhyānādvinā cendriyanigrahāt| anāyāsena yenaitatprāpyate paramaṁ padam
The sages said: without knowledge, without meditation, without restraint of the senses — by what effortless means that supreme state is attained,
Verse 4 (skanda.7.473.4)
saṁkṣepātkathaya snehāddṛṣṭādṛṣṭaphalodayam| dharmānmanujaśārdūla brūhi sarvānaśeṣataḥ
tell us that, in brief, out of affection, O tiger among men; declare to us fully all the dharmas that yield visible and unseen fruit.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.473.5)
ityukto'sau mahābhāgo nārāyaṇaparāyaṇaḥ| kathayāmāsa saṁkṣepātsarvalokahitodyataḥ
Thus addressed, that illustrious one, devoted to Narayana, intent on the welfare of all beings, began to speak in brief.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.473.6)
śrīprahlāda uvāca| śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi guhyādguhyataraṁ mahat| yasya saṁśravaṇādeva sarvapāpakṣayo bhavet
Shri Prahlada said: Listen, I shall tell a great truth, more secret than the secret, by merely hearing which all sins are destroyed.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.473.7)
aṣṭādaśapurāṇānāṁ sārātsārataraṁ ca yat| tadahaṁ kathayiṣyāmi bhuktimuktiphalapradam
That which is more essential than the very essence of the eighteen Puranas — that I shall tell, which grants both enjoyment and liberation as its fruit.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.473.8)
sukhāsīnaṁ mahādevaṁ jagataḥ kāraṇaṁ param| papraccha ṣaṇmukho bhaktyā sarvalokahitodyataḥ
Shanmukha (Kartikeya), intent on the welfare of all worlds, devotedly questioned Mahadeva, the supreme cause of the universe, seated at ease.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.473.9)
skanda uvāca| bhagavansarvalokānāṁ duḥkhasaṁsārabheṣajam| kathayasva prasādena sukhopāyaṁ vimuktaye
Skanda said: O Lord, graciously tell me the remedy for the sorrowful existence of all worlds, and the easy means to liberation.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.473.10)
īśvara uvāca| caturvidhaṁ tu yatpāpaṁ koṭijanmārjitaṁ kalau| jāgare vaiṣṇavaṁ śāstraṁ vācayitvā vyapohati
Ishvara said: Whatever fourfold sin has been accrued over crores of births, in the Kali age, is removed by having the Vaishnava scripture recited during the night vigil.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.473.11)
vaiṣṇavasya tu śāstrasya yo vaktā jāgare hareḥ| madbhaktaṁ taṁ vijānīyādvipannastvanyathā bhavet
He who is the reciter of Vaishnava scripture during Hari's night vigil should be known as my devotee; otherwise, one falls into calamity.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.473.12)
harijāgaraṇaṁ kāryaṁ madbhaktena vijānatā| anyathā pāpino jñeyā ye dviṣanti janārddanam
My devotee, knowing this, must perform Hari's night vigil. Those who bear hatred for Janardana should otherwise be known as sinners.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.473.13)
jāgaraṁ ye ca kurvaṁti gāyaṁti harivāsare| agniṣṭomaphalaṁ teṣāṁ nimiṣārddhena ṣaṇmukha
O six-faced one, those who keep the vigil and sing on Hari's day obtain the fruit of the Agnishtoma sacrifice in but half a moment.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.473.14)
jāgare paśyatāṁ viṣṇormukhaṁ rātrau muhurmuhuḥ| yeṣāṁ hṛṣyaṁti romāṇi rātrau jāgaraṇe hareḥ| kulāni divi tāvaṁti vasaṁti harisannidhau
Those who, gazing repeatedly upon Vishnu's face through the night of the vigil, feel their hair stand on end during Hari's night vigil — as many of their kinsfolk dwell in heaven, near Hari.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.473.15)
yamasya pathi nirmuktā janāḥ pāpaśatairvṛtāḥ| gītaśāstravinodena dvādaśījāgarānvitāḥ
People, though surrounded by hundreds of sins, who join in the Dvadashi vigil enlivened with song and scriptural discourse, are freed from Yama's path.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.473.16)
suprabhātā niśā teṣāṁ dhanyāḥ sukṛtino narāḥ| prāṇātyayena muhyaṁti yaiḥ kṛtaṁ jāgaraṁ hareḥ
For them the night ends in a good dawn; blessed and meritorious are those men who have kept Hari's vigil — they do not become confused at the moment of death.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.473.17)
putrinaste narā loke dhaninaḥ khyātapauruṣāḥ| yeṣāṁ vaṁśodbhavāḥ putrāḥ kurvaṁti harijāgaram
Those men are, in this world, blessed with sons, wealthy, and renowned for valour, whose descendants perform Hari's night vigil.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.473.18)
iṣṭaṁ makhaiḥ kṛtaṁ dānaṁ dattaṁ piṁḍaṁ gayāśire| snātaṁ nityaṁ prayāge tu yaiḥ kṛtaṁ jāgaraṁ hareḥ
Those who have kept Hari's vigil have, as it were, performed sacrifice with offerings, given gifts, offered rice-balls at Gayashirsha, and bathed daily at Prayaga.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.473.19)
dayitā viṣṇubhaktāśca nityaṁ mama ṣaḍānana| kurvaṁti vāsaraṁ viṣṇoryasmājjāgaraṇaṁ hitam
O six-faced one, devotees of Vishnu are ever dear to me, because they observe the vigil on Vishnu's day, which is beneficial.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.473.20)
śrutvā harṣaṁ na cāpnoti jāgaraṁ na karoti yaḥ| prakaṭīkaroti tannūnaṁ jananyā durviceṣṭitam
He who, hearing this, feels no joy and does not keep the vigil, thereby reveals, without doubt, his own mother's improper conduct.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.473.21)
saṁprāpya vāsaraṁ viṣṇorna yeṣāṁ jāgaro hareḥ| vyarthaṁ gataṁ ca tatpuṇyaṁ teṣāṁ varṣaśatodbhavam
Those who, having attained Vishnu's day, do not keep Hari's vigil — their merit accumulated over a hundred years has gone to waste.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.473.22)
putro vā putraputro vā dauhitro duhitā'pi vā| kariṣyati kule'smākaṁ kalau jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ
'Whether a son, a grandson, a daughter's son, or a daughter — someone in our family, in the Kali age, will perform Hari's night vigil' —
Verse 23 (skanda.7.473.23)
pātyamānāḥ prajalpaṁti pitaro yamakiṁkaraiḥ| muktirbhaviṣyatyasmākaṁ narakājjāgare kṛte
Thus speak the ancestors, being hurled down by Yama's servants: 'When the vigil is performed, we shall be freed from hell.'
Verse 24 (skanda.7.473.24)
nānyathā jāyate'smākaṁ muktiryajñaśatairapi| vinā jāgaraṇenaiva naralokātkathaṁcana| tasmājjāgaraṇaṁ kāryaṁ pitṝṇāṁ hitamicchatā
'Not through hundreds of sacrifices will our liberation otherwise come — from the human world, without the vigil, by no means whatsoever.' Therefore one who desires the welfare of his ancestors must perform the vigil.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.473.25)
bhaktirbhāgavatānāṁ ca goviṁdasyāpi kīrtanam| na dehagrahaṇaṁ tasmātpunarloke bhaviṣyati
By devotion to the Bhagavatas and by chanting the name of Govinda, a man does not again take a body in this world.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.473.26)
jāgaraṁ kurute yaśca saṁgame vijayādine| punarddehaprajananaṁ dagdhaṁ tenā'ātmanā svayam
He who keeps the vigil at the confluence of the Vijaya tithi has, by his very self, burned away future rebirth.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.473.27)
trispṛśā vāsaraṁ yena kṛtaṁ jāgaraṇānvitam| keśavasya śarīre tu sa līno nātra saṁśayaḥ
He who has observed the Trisparsha day accompanied by the vigil becomes absorbed into Keshava's own body — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.473.28)
unmīlinī kṛtā yena rātrau jāgaraṇānvitā| prabhavaṁti na pāpāni sthūlasūkṣmāṇi tasya tu
He who has observed the Unmilini vow at night, accompanied by the vigil — gross and subtle sins have no power over him.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.473.29)
satālavādyasaṁyuktaṁ saṁgītaṁ jāgaraṁ hareḥ| yaḥ kārayati devasya dvādaśyāṁ dānasaṁyutam
He who, on Dvadashi, has Hari's vigil performed with music accompanied by cymbals and instruments, together with gift-giving,
Verse 30 (skanda.7.473.30)
tasya puṇyaṁ pravakṣyāmi mahābhāgavatasya hi| tilaprasthasahasraṁ tu sahiraṇyaṁ dvijātaye| dattvā yatphalamāpnoti hyayaneravisaṁkrame
I shall tell the merit of that great devotee — the fruit obtained by giving a thousand prasthas of sesame together with gold to a brahmin at the solstice, when the sun changes its course,
Verse 31 (skanda.7.473.31)
hemabhāraśataṁ nityaṁ savatsaṁ kapilāyutam| prekṣaṇīyapradānena tatphalaṁ prāpnuyātkalau
the fruit of a hundred measures of gold given daily, and of a kapila cow with her calf — that fruit he obtains, in the Kali age, merely through the gift of witnessing the vigil.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.473.32)
yaḥ punarvāsare putra divyairṛṣikṛtaiḥ stavaiḥ| toṣayetpadmanābhaṁ vai vaidikairviṣṇusāmabhiḥ
O son, he who, on that day, gratifies Padmanabha with divine hymns composed by sages, and with the Vedic Vishnu-samans,
Verse 33 (skanda.7.473.33)
ṛgyajuḥsāmasambhūtaivaiṣṇavaiścaiva putraka| saṁskṛtaiḥ prākṛtaiḥ stotrairanyaiśca vividhaistathā
O son, with Vaishnava mantras born of the Rig, Yajur, and Sama, and with hymns in Sanskrit, Prakrit, and other various tongues as well,
Verse 34 (skanda.7.473.34)
prītiṁ karoti deveśo dvādaśyāṁ jāgare sthitaḥ| śṛṇu puṇyaṁ samāsena yadgītaṁ brahmaṇā mama
the Lord of gods, present at the Dvadashi vigil, becomes pleased. Now hear, in brief, the merit which Brahma once told me.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.473.35)
triḥsaptakṛtvo dharaṇīṁ triguṇīkṛtya ṣaṇmukha| dattvā yatphalamāpnoti tatphalaṁ prāpnuyānnaraḥ
O six-faced one, the fruit obtained by giving away the earth, thrice-multiplied, twenty-one times over — that same fruit a man obtains.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.473.36)
gavāṁ śatasahasreṇa savatsenāpi yatphalam| tatphalaṁ prāpnuyānmartyaḥ stotrairyastoṣayeddharim
The fruit obtained by gifting a hundred thousand cows with their calves — that same fruit the mortal obtains who pleases Hari with hymns.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.473.37)
vaidikī daśaguṇā prītiryāmenaikena jāgare| evaṁ phalānusāreṇa kāryaṁ jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ
Through Vedic hymns of praise, even a single watch of the vigil brings tenfold delight. Thus, according to the fruit, Hari's vigil should be performed.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.473.38)
yaḥ punaḥ paṭhate rātrau gītāṁ nāmasahasrakam| dvādaśyāṁ purato viṣṇorveṣṇavānāṁ samīpataḥ
He who, again, on the night of Dvadashi, before Vishnu, in the presence of Vaishnavas, recites the Gita and the thousand names,
Verse 39 (skanda.7.473.39)
puṇyaṁ bhāgavataṁ skāṁdapurāṇaṁ dayitaṁ hareḥ| mādhuraṁ bālacaritaṁ gopīnāṁ caritaṁ tathā
the holy Bhagavata, the Skanda Purana beloved of Hari, the sweet tale of his childhood, and likewise the story of the gopis —
Verse 40 (skanda.7.473.40)
etānpaṭhati rātrau yaḥ pūjayitvā tu keśavam| na vedmyahaṁ phalaṁ vatsa yadi jñāsyati keśavaḥ
he who, having worshipped Keshava, recites these at night — O child, I do not know the fruit of that; perhaps only Keshava himself knows.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.473.41)
dīpaṁ prajvālayedrātrau yaḥ stavairharijāgare| na cāstaṁ gacchate tasya puṇyaṁ kalpaśatairapi
He who, at Hari's night vigil, lights a lamp along with hymns of praise — his merit does not set, even over hundreds of kalpas.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.473.42)
maṁjarīsahitaiḥ patraistulasīsambhavairharim| jāgare pūjayedbhaktyā nāsti tasya punarbhavaḥ
He who, at the vigil, devotedly worships Hari with tulasi leaves accompanied by their clusters, does not undergo rebirth.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.473.43)
snānaṁ vilepanaṁ pūjā dhūpaṁ dīpaṁ ca saṁstavam| naivedyaṁ ca satāṁbūlaṁ jāgare dattamakṣayam
Bathing, anointing, worship, incense, lamps, hymns of praise, food-offerings, and betel — all of this, given during the vigil, becomes imperishable.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.473.44)
dhyātumicchati ṣaḍvaktraṁ yo māṁ bhaktiparāyaṇaḥ| sa karotu mahābhaktyā dvādaśyāṁ jāgaraṁ hareḥ
O six-faced one, he who, devoted to me, wishes to meditate upon me, let him, with great devotion, perform Hari's vigil on Dvadashi.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.473.45)
vāsare vāsudevasya sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ| dehamāśritya tiṣṭhaṁti ye prakurvaṁti jāgaram
On Vasudeva's day, all the gods, together with Indra, take up residence within the body of those who perform the vigil.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.473.46)
Those who, at Vasudeva's vigil, recite the Mahabharata, attain the destination of yogis — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.473.47)
caritaṁ rāmadevasya ye vadhaṁ rāvaṇasya ca| paṭhaṁti jāgare viṣṇoste yāṁti paramāṁ gatim
Those who, at Vishnu's vigil, recite the story of Lord Rama and the slaying of Ravana attain the supreme destination.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.473.48)
adhītya caturo vedānkṛtvā caivārcanaṁ hareḥ| snātvā ca sarvatīrtheṣu jāgare tatphalaṁ hareḥ
The fruit obtained by studying the four Vedas, performing worship of Hari, and bathing at all tirthas — that same fruit comes from Hari's vigil.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.473.49)
rathānāmayutairyattu sahasrairvaravāraṇaiḥ| lakṣeṇāśvavarāṇāṁ tu tatphalaṁ jāgare hareḥ
The fruit obtained by giving ten thousand chariots, thousands of fine elephants, and a hundred thousand fine horses — that same fruit comes from Hari's vigil.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.473.50)
dhānyaśailasahasraistu tulāpuruṣakoṭibhiḥ| yatphalaṁ munibhiḥ proktaṁ tatphalaṁ jāgare hareḥ
The fruit declared by the sages for thousands of mountains of grain and crores of tulapurusha gifts — that same fruit comes from Hari's vigil.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.473.51)
kanyākoṭipradānaṁ ca svarṇabhāraśataṁ tathā| dattaṁ ratnāyutaśataṁ yaiḥ kṛto jāgaro hareḥ
Equal to the gift of crores of maidens, a hundred measures of gold, and hundreds of thousands of gems is the merit of those who have performed Hari's vigil.
Verse 52 (skanda.7.473.52)
aṣṭādaśapurāṇaistu paṭhitairyatphalaṁ bhavet| tatphalaṁ śatasāhasraṁ kṛte jāgaraṇe hareḥ
The fruit that comes from reciting the eighteen Puranas — that fruit becomes a hundred-thousand-fold when Hari's vigil is performed.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.473.53)
manvādi paṭhatāṁ śāstraṁ yatphalaṁ hi dvijanmanaḥ| adhikaṁ phalamāpnoti kurvāṇo jāgaraṁ hareḥ
Whatever fruit a twice-born who recites the Manu-scripture and other treatises obtains — he who performs Hari's vigil obtains even greater fruit than that.
Verse 54 (skanda.7.473.54)
durbhikṣe cānnadātṝṇāṁ puṁsāṁ bhavati yatphalam| saṁnyāsināṁ sahasraistu yatphalaṁ bhojitaiḥ kalau| phalaṁ tatsamavāpnoti kurvatāṁ jāgaraṁ hareḥ
Whatever fruit accrues to those who give food during a famine, and whatever fruit comes from feeding a thousand ascetics in the Kali age — that fruit is obtained by those who perform Hari's vigil.
