Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 475
The Glory of the Dvadashi Vigil, Continued
Verse 1 (skanda.7.475.1)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| kṛtvā jāgaraṇaṁ viṣṇoryathānyāyaṁ nareśvara| pitṝnyacchati puṇyaṁ ca tataḥ kiṁ kurute yamaḥ
Markandeya said: O lord of men, one who duly performs Vishnu's vigil and offers its merit to the ancestors — what more can Yama then do to him?
Verse 2 (skanda.7.475.2)
bhukto vā yadi vā'bhuktaḥ svaccho vā'svaccha eva vā| vimuktiḥ kathitā tatra harijāgaraṇānnṛṇām
Whether one has eaten or not, whether pure or impure — liberation for men is declared through Hari's night vigil.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.475.3)
asnāto vā naraḥ snāto jāgare samupasthite| sarvatīrthāpluto jñeyastaṁ dṛṣṭvā divamāvrajet
When the vigil is present, a man, whether bathed or unbathed, should be known as one who has bathed at all tirthas; seeing him, one should go to heaven.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.475.4)
śvapacā jāgaraṁ kṛtvā padaṁ nirvāṇamāgatāḥ| kiṁ punarvarṇasaṁbhūtāḥ sadācāraparāstathā
Even outcastes, by performing the vigil, have attained the state of liberation — how much more, then, those born into the varnas and devoted to good conduct!
Verse 5 (skanda.7.475.5)
yuvatīnādamākarṇya yathā nidrā na jāyate| jāgare caivameva syāttatkathānāṁ ca kīrtane
Just as sleep does not come upon hearing the voice of young women, so should it be at the vigil, and at the recitation of his stories.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.475.6)
brahmahatyā surāpānaṁ steyaṁ gurvaṁganāgamaḥ| utkallanaṁ manaḥpāpaṁ śodhayedviṣṇu jāgaraḥ
The killing of a brahmin, drinking liquor, theft, union with a guru's wife, and sin arising in the mind — Vishnu's vigil purifies all of these.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.475.7)
vimuktiḥ kāmukasyoktā kiṁ punarvīkṣatāṁ harim
Liberation is declared even for one governed by lust; how much more, then, for those who behold Hari!
Verse 8 (skanda.7.475.8)
vācikaṁ mānasaṁ pāpaṁ karaṇairyadupārjitam| anyairnimiṣamātreṇa vyapohati na saṁśayaḥ
Sin accrued through speech, mind, and the other senses — this vigil removes in but a moment, without doubt.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.475.9)
goṣṭhyāṁ samāgatā ye tu teṣāṁ pāpaṁ kutaḥ smṛtam| mātṛpūjā gayāśrāddhaṁ sutīrthagamanaṁ tathā| jāgarasya nṛṇāṁ rājansamāni kavayo viduḥ
Where, indeed, is any sin ascribed to those who gather in such an assembly? O king, the wise have known the worship of one's mother, the shraddha at Gaya, and pilgrimage to excellent tirthas to be equal, for men, to the vigil.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.475.10)
jananīpūjanaṁ bhūpa hyaśvamedhāyutaiḥ samam| pūrṇaṁ varṣaśataṁ bhūpa kuśāgreṇoddhṛtaṁ jalam
O king, worship of one's mother equals ten thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices. O king, water lifted by the tip of a kusha blade for a full hundred years,
Verse 11 (skanda.7.475.11)
pibanpātre dvijaḥ samyaktīrthe puṣkarasaṁjñite| jāgarasyaiva caitāni kalāṁ nārhaṁti ṣoḍaśīm
drunk properly from a vessel by a brahmin at the tirtha called Pushkara — all these together are not worth a sixteenth part of the vigil.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.475.12)
kṛtvā kāṁcanasaṁpūrṇāṁ vasudhāṁ vasudhādhipa| dattvā yatphalamāpnoti tatphalaṁ harijāgare
O lord of the earth, the fruit obtained by making the whole earth of gold and giving it away — that same fruit comes from Hari's vigil.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.475.13)
nikṛṁtanaṁ karmaṇaśca hyātmanā duṣkṛtaṁ kṛtam| vyapohati na saṁdeho yena jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtam
He who has kept the vigil cuts through the bond of the fruit of whatever evil deeds he has himself committed — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.475.14)
saṁkṣepataḥ pravakṣyāmi punareva mahīpate| jāgare padmanābhasya yatphalaṁ kavayo viduḥ
O king, again I shall tell, in brief, the fruit which the wise have known of Padmanabha's vigil.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.475.15)
raverbiṁbamidaṁ bhittvā sa yogī harijāgare| prayāti paramaṁ sthānaṁ yogigamyaṁ niraṁjanam| sāṁkhyayogaiḥ suduḥkhena prāpyate yatpadaṁ hareḥ
Through Hari's vigil, that yogi pierces this orb of the sun and goes to that supreme, stainless abode attainable by yogis — that station of Hari which is otherwise gained only with great difficulty through Sankhya and Yoga.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.475.16)
nadyo nadā yathā yāṁti sāgare saṁsthitiṁ kramāt| evaṁ jāgaraṇātsarve tatpade yāṁti saṁsthitim
As rivers and streams flow in due order to find their resting place in the ocean, so too, through the vigil, all attain their resting place in that supreme abode.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.475.17)
merumaṁdaramānāni kṛtvā pāpāni vā naraḥ| harijāgaraṇe tāni vyapohati na saṁśayaḥ
Even if a man has committed sins as vast as Mount Meru and Mount Mandara, he removes them all at Hari's night vigil — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.475.18)
rājyaṁ svargaṁ tathā mokṣaṁ yaccānyadīpsitaṁ nṛṇām| dadāti bhagavānkṛṣṇaḥ svagītairjāgare sthitaḥ
The Lord Krishna, present at the vigil, through his own songs, grants to men kingship, heaven, liberation, and whatever else is desired.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.475.19)
jāgareṇaiva pāpānāṁ śvapacānāṁ mahīpate| tatpadaṁ kavibhiḥ proktaṁ kiṁ punastu dvijanmanām
O king, by the vigil alone, that supreme state has been declared by the wise even for sinful outcastes — how much more, then, for the twice-born!
Verse 20 (skanda.7.475.20)
japadhyānavihīnasya gāyakasyāpi bhūpate| karmabhraṣṭasya ca prokto mokṣastu harijāgare
O king, liberation through Hari's vigil is declared even for one devoid of recitation and meditation, a mere singer, and one fallen from proper duty.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.475.21)
tannāsti triṣu lokeṣu puṇyaṁ puṇyavatāṁ nṛṇām| yattu sādhayate bhūpa jāgare saṁvyavasthitaḥ
O king, there is no merit in the three worlds, belonging to meritorious men, that one established at the vigil does not achieve.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.475.22)
tvayā punaridaṁ kāryaṁ smarttavyo garuḍadhvajaḥ| ekādaśyāṁ na bhoktavyaṁ kartavyaṁ jāgaraṁ sadā
This you must always do — remember the bearer of the Garuda banner; on Ekadashi one should not eat, and should always keep the vigil.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.475.23)
jāgare varttamānasya śvapacasya gatirbhavet| kiṁpunarvarṇajātīnāṁ vaiṣṇavānāṁ mahīpate
O king, even an outcaste present at the vigil attains liberation — how much more, then, for Vaishnavas born into the varnas!
Verse 24 (skanda.7.475.24)
ye tu jāgaraṇe nidrāṁ na yāṁti nṛpapuṁgava| na teṣāṁ jananī yāti khedaṁ garbhāvadhāraṇāt
O foremost of kings, those who do not succumb to sleep during the vigil — their mother does not suffer the distress of having borne them in her womb.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.475.25)
tasmājjāgaraṇaṁ kāryaṁ māturjaṭharavarjibhiḥ| bhītermokṣaparairmartyaiḥ sukhaceṣṭābahiṣkṛtaiḥ
Therefore mortals, freed from the mother's womb, intent upon liberation from fear, and setting aside comfortable ease, should perform the vigil.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.475.26)
yastu jāgaraṇaṁ rātrau kuryādbhaktisamanvitaḥ| nimiṣenimiṣe rājannaśvamedhaphalaṁ labhet
O king, he who, with devotion, keeps the vigil through the night obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice for every single moment.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.475.27)
śayanotthāpanābhyāṁ ca samaṁ puṇyamudāhṛtam| viśeṣo nāsti bhūpāla viṣṇunā kathitaṁ purā
Equal merit is declared for both putting the deity to rest and waking him; O king, there is no distinction — thus did Vishnu himself declare of old.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.475.28)
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ sthitāḥ śūdrāśca jāgare| pakṣiṇaḥ kṛmikīṭāśca hyaneke caiva jaṁtavaḥ| te gatāḥ paramaṁ sthānaṁ yogigamyaṁ niraṁjanam
Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras present at the vigil, and birds, worms, insects, and many other creatures too — all of them attain that supreme, stainless abode attainable by yogis.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.475.29)
yāni kāni ca pāpāni brahmahatyāsamāni ca| kṛṣṇajāgaraṇe tāni kṣayaṁ yāṁti na saṁśayaḥ
Whatever sins exist, equal to the killing of a brahmin, all of them are dissolved at Krishna's vigil — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.475.30)
ekataḥ kratavaḥ sarve sarvatīrthasamanvitāḥ| ekato devadevasya jāgaraḥ kṛṣṇavallabhaḥ| na samaṁ hyadhikaḥ proktaḥ kavibhiḥ kṛṣṇajāgaraḥ
On one side stand all sacrifices together with all tirthas; on the other, the vigil of the god of gods, beloved of Krishna — the wise have declared Krishna's vigil not merely equal, but greater.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.475.31)
sūryaśakrādayo devā brahmarudrādayo gaṇāḥ| nityameva samāyāṁti jāgare kṛṣṇavallabhe
The Sun, Indra, and the other gods, the hosts led by Brahma and Rudra — all of them ever gather at that vigil beloved of Krishna.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.475.32)
gaṁgā sarasvatī revā yamunā ca śatahradā| caṁdrabhāgā vitastā ca nadyaḥ sarvāśca tatra vai
The Ganga, Sarasvati, Narmada, Yamuna, Shatadru, Chandrabhaga, Vitasta, and all other rivers come there.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.475.33)
sarāṁsi ca hradāścaiva samudrāḥ kṛtsnaśo nṛpa| ekādaśyāṁ nṛpaśreṣṭha gacchaṁti harijāgare
O best of kings, on Ekadashi, lakes, pools, and all the oceans entirely go to Hari's vigil.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.475.34)
spṛhaṇīyāstu devebhyo ye narāḥ kṛṣṇajāgare| nṛtyaṁ gītaṁ prakurvaṁti vīṇāvādyaṁ tathaiva ca
Those men who, at Krishna's vigil, perform dance and song, and play the vina, are objects of envy even to the gods.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.475.35)
bhaktyā vā'pyathavā'bhaktyā śucirvāpyathavā'śuciḥ| kṛtvā jāgaraṇaṁ viṣṇormucyate pāpakoṭibhiḥ
Whether with devotion or without it, whether pure or impure, having performed Vishnu's vigil, a man is freed from crores of sins.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.475.36)
pādayoḥ pāṁsukaṇikā yāvattiṣṭhaṁti bhūtale| tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi jāgarī vasate divi
For as many thousands of years as there are particles of dust clinging to his feet upon this earth, so long does the one who keeps the vigil dwell in heaven.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.475.37)
tasmādgṛhaṁ pragantavyaṁ jāgare mādhavasya ca| kalau malavināśāya dvādaśadvādaśīṣu ca
Therefore, in the Kali age, for the destruction of sin, one should go to Madhava's house of vigil on each of the twelve Dvadashis of the year.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.475.38)
subahūnyapi pāpāni kṛtvā jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ| nirddahenmerutulyāni yugakoṭiśatānyapi
Very many sins, even those as great as Mount Meru, accumulated over hundreds of crores of ages, are burned away by performing Hari's vigil.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.475.39)
unmīlinī mahīpāla yaiḥ kṛtā prītisaṁyutaiḥ| kalau jāgaraṇopetā phalaṁ vakṣyāmi tacchṛṇu
O king, those who, with love, in the Kali age, have observed the Unmilini vow accompanied by the vigil — I shall tell their fruit; listen.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.475.40)
sthitau yugasahasraṁ tu pādenaikena bhūtale| kāśyāṁ ca jāhnavītīre tatphalaṁ labhate naraḥ
The fruit obtained by standing on one foot for a thousand yugas at Kashi, on the bank of the Ganga — that same fruit a man obtains.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.475.41)
bhavedyugasahasraṁ ca vinā'āhāreṇa yatphalam| unmīlinīṁ samāsādya phalaṁ jāgaraṇe hareḥ
The fruit that would come from remaining without food for a thousand yugas — that fruit is obtained through Hari's vigil upon observing the Unmilini.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.475.42)
duṣprāpyaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ sthānaṁ makhakoṭiśataiḥ kṛtaiḥ| helayā prāpyate nūnaṁ dvādaśyāṁ jāgare kṛte
The Vaishnava abode, hard to attain even through hundreds of crores of sacrifices, is surely, effortlessly attained by performing the vigil on Dvadashi.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.475.43)
na kurvaṁti vrataṁ viṣṇorjāgareṇa samanvitam| parasvaṁ pāradāryaṁ ca pāpaṁ tānprati gacchati
Those who do not observe Vishnu's vow accompanied by the vigil — the sin of coveting another's wealth and another's wife falls upon them.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.475.44)
ekenaivopavāsena bhāvahīnāstu mānavāḥ| nirddagdhā'khilapāpāste prayāṁti svargakānanam
Even men devoid of proper feeling, by a single fast, burn away all their sins and attain the celestial grove of heaven.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.475.45)
yatra bhāgavataṁ śāstraṁ yatra jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ| śāligrāmaśilā yatra tatra gacchaddhariḥ svayam
Where the Bhagavata scripture is, where Hari's vigil takes place, where the Shaligrama stone is — there Hari himself goes.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.475.46)
na puryaḥ pāvanāḥ sapta kalau vedavaco nahi| yādṛśaṁ vāsaraṁ viṣṇoḥ pāvanaṁ jāgarānvitam
In the Kali age, neither the seven sacred cities nor even the words of the Veda are as purifying as Vishnu's day accompanied by the vigil.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.475.47)
saṁprāpte vāsare viṣṇorye na kurvaṁti jāgaram| majjaṁti narake ghore narānāryo na saṁśayaḥ
Those men and women who, when Vishnu's day arrives, do not perform the vigil sink into terrible hell — of this there is no doubt.
