The Glory of Ajapaleshvari
Verse 1 (skanda.7.58.1)
īśvara uvāca| atha dvitīyāṁ te vacmi śaktiṁ devi kriyātmikām| prabhāsasthāṁ mahādevīṁ devānāṁ prītidāyinīm
Ishvara said: Now I tell you of the second Shakti, O Goddess — the Kriya-shakti (power of action), the great Goddess residing in Prabhasa, who bestows delight upon the gods.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.58.2)
someśādvāyave bhāge ṣaṣṭidhanvaṁtare sthitā| tatra pīṭhaṁ mahādevi yoginīgaṇavaṁditam
She is situated in the northwest (Vayu) direction from Somesha, sixty bow-lengths away. There, O great Goddess, stands a seat revered by hosts of Yoginis.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.58.3)
tasminsthāne sthitaṁ devi pātālavivaraṁ mahat| tasminmahāprabhe sthāne rakṣārūpeṇa saṁsthitām
In that place, O Goddess, lies a great opening to the netherworld (Patala); in that place of great splendor, she abides in the form of a guardian,
Verse 4 (skanda.7.58.4)
pātālanidhi nikṣepadivyauṣadhirasāyanam| kṣetramadhye sthitaṁ sarvaṁ tadarcanarato labhet
guarding Patala's treasures, deposits, divine herbs, and elixirs. All that lies within the sacred field is obtained by one devoted to her worship.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.58.5)
bhairavīti ca taddevyāḥ pūrvaṁ nāma prakīrttitam| asminpunaścāṁtare tu aṣṭāviṁśe caturyuge| tretāyugamukhe rājā ajāpālo babhūva ha
Formerly, that Goddess's name was proclaimed as Bhairavi. Again, in this interval, in the twenty-eighth Chaturyuga, at the dawn of the Treta age, there was a king named Ajapala.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.58.6)
tena cāgatya kṣetre'sminpaṁcavarṣaśatāni ca| bhairavī pūjitā devī vyādhigrastena bhāmini
O lovely one, having come to this sacred field, though afflicted with disease, he worshipped the Goddess Bhairavi for five hundred years.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.58.7)
tataḥ provāca taṁ devī saṁtuṣṭā rājasattamam| alaṁ kleśena rājarṣe tuṣṭāhaṁ tava bhaktitaḥ
Then the Goddess, well pleased, said to that excellent king: "Enough of hardship, O royal sage; I am pleased by your devotion."
Verse 8 (skanda.7.58.8)
ityuktaḥ sa tadā rājā kṛtāñjaliputaḥ sudhīḥ| praṇamyovāca tāṁ devīmānaṁdāsrāvilekṣaṇaḥ
Thus addressed, the wise king, joining his palms, his eyes brimming with tears of joy, bowed to the Goddess and spoke.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.58.9)
yadi tuṣṭāsi me devi varārho yadi vāpyaham| sarve rogāḥ śarīrānme nāśaṁ yāṁtu bahiḥ kṛtāḥ
"O Goddess, if you are pleased with me, and if I am worthy of a boon, let all diseases, cast out from my body, come to destruction."
Verse 10 (skanda.7.58.10)
evamuktā tu sā devī punaḥ provāca taṁ nṛpam| sarvameva mahārāja yathoktaṁ te bhaviṣyati
Thus addressed, that Goddess spoke again to the king: "O great king, everything shall come to pass exactly as you have said."
Verse 11 (skanda.7.58.11)
ityukte tu tadā devyā tasya rājñaḥ kalevarāt| nirgatā vyādhayastatra ajārūpeṇa vai pṛthak
As soon as the Goddess said this, the diseases emerged separately from that king's body, taking the form of goats.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.58.12)
sahasrāṇāṁ tu paṁcaiva niyataṁ sārddhameva ca| iti vṛtte mahādevyā punaḥ prokto narādhipaḥ
They numbered exactly five and a half thousand. When this had happened, the great Goddess spoke to the king once more.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.58.13)
rājannetānajārūpānvyādhīnpālaya kṛtsnaśaḥ| kiṁkurvāṇā bhaviṣyaṁti tavaivādeśakāriṇaḥ
"O king, tend fully to these diseases in the form of goats; what will they do? They shall be entirely obedient to your command."
Verse 14 (skanda.7.58.14)
ajāpāleti te nāma khyātaṁ loke bhaviṣyati| tava nāmnā mama nāma ajāpāleśvarīti ca| bhaviṣyati dharāpṛṣṭhe tacca yāvaccaturyugam
"Your name shall become renowned in the world as Ajapala. From your name, mine shall become Ajapaleshvari, and this shall endure on the earth for a whole Chaturyuga."
Verse 15 (skanda.7.58.15)
aṣṭamyāṁ ca caturddaśyāṁ yo'tra māṁ pūjayiṣyati| tasyāṣṭaguṇamaiśvaryaṁ dāsye tuṣṭā na saṁśayaḥ
"Whoever worships me here on the eighth and fourteenth lunar days, to him, pleased, I shall grant eightfold prosperity — without doubt."
Verse 16 (skanda.7.58.16)
aśvayukchuklāṣṭamyāṁ ca triḥ kṛtvā tu pradakṣiṇām| someśaṁ madhyataḥ kṛtvā saṁsnāpyābhyarcya māṁ pṛthak| tasya varṣatrayaṁ rājanna bhīḥ śoko bhaviṣyati
"On the bright eighth of the month of Ashvina, keeping Somesha at the center, circumambulating three times, bathing the image and worshipping me separately — for that person, O king, there shall be neither fear nor grief for three years."
Verse 17 (skanda.7.58.17)
yā tu vaṁdhyā bhavennārī rogiṇī durbhagā tathā| tayoktā navamī kāryā mamāgre tuṣṭivarddhinī
"Whatever woman is barren, or sick, or unfortunate should perform the ninth-day rite before me, which increases contentment."
Verse 18 (skanda.7.58.18)
īśvara uvāca| ityuktvā tu tadā devī tatraivāṁtarhitā'bhavat| prabhāsakṣetramadhyasthaḥ sa rājātulavikramaḥ
Ishvara said: Having said this, the Goddess vanished right there. That king of incomparable valor, dwelling in the midst of the Prabhasa field,
Verse 19 (skanda.7.58.19)
pālayāmāsa dharmātmā tānajānvyādhirūpiṇaḥ| auṣadhīrvividhākārāsteṣāṁ yāḥ puṣṭihetavaḥ
righteous as he was, tended those disease-goats with various kinds of herbs that nourished them.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.58.20)
tatra varṣaśataṁ sāgraṁ puṣṭiṁ nītā ajāḥ pṛthak| mahānidhānasaṁsthānamajāpālena nirmiṁtam
There, for over a hundred years, the goats were each nourished. Ajapala built there a great treasure-house.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.58.21)
atha tasyāḥ prasādena sa rājā pṛthuvikramaḥ| saptadvīpādhipo jātaḥ sūryavaṁśavibhūṣaṇaḥ
Then, by her grace, that mighty king, the ornament of the Solar dynasty, became the lord of the seven continents.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.58.22)
devyuvāca| atyāścaryamidaṁ deva ajā devyāḥ samudbhavam| punaśca śrotumicchāmi tasya rājñodbhutaṁ mahat
The Goddess said: "O Lord, this origin of the goats from the Goddess is most wondrous. I wish to hear again the great and marvelous deeds of that king."
Verse 23 (skanda.7.58.23)
"How, O Lord of gods, did that king alone rule over the earth of seven continents? How did he transform those diseases into goats?"
Verse 24 (skanda.7.58.24)
īśvara uvāca| purā babhūva rājarṣirdilīpa iti viśrutaḥ| dīrgho nāma sutastasya raghustasmādajāyata
Ishvara said: Long ago there was a royal sage renowned by the name Dilipa. His son was named Dirgha, and from him Raghu was born.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.58.25)
ajaḥputro raghoścāpi tasmādyaścātivīryavān| sa bhairavīṁ samārādhya kṛtvā vyādhīnajāgaṇān
Aja was the son of Raghu, and from him was born one of exceeding valor. He, having duly worshipped Bhairavi, transformed the diseases into a herd of goats,
Verse 26 (skanda.7.58.26)
pālayāmāsa saṁhṛṣṭo hyajāpālastato'bhavat| tasminkāle babhūvātha rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ
and tended them joyfully; thus he became Ajapala. At that time there lived Ravana, lord of the rakshasas.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.58.27)
laṁkāsthitaḥ suragaṇānniyuyoja svakarmasu| akhaṁḍamaṁḍalaṁ caṁdramātapatraṁ cakāra ha
Ravana, dwelling in Lanka, had pressed the hosts of gods into his own service; he had made the unbroken orb of the moon his royal parasol.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.58.28)
iṁdraṁ senāpatiṁ cakre vāyuṁ pāṁsupramārjakam| varuṇaṁ dūtakarmasthaṁ dhanadaṁ dhanarakṣakam
He made Indra his army commander, Vayu his dust-sweeper, Varuna his messenger, Dhanada the guardian of his treasury.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.58.29)
yamaṁ saṁyamane'rīṇāṁ yuyuje maṁtraṇe manum| meghāśchardaṁti liṁpaṁti drumāḥ puṣpāṇi cikṣipuḥ
He employed Yama in restraining his enemies and Manu in counsel. The clouds sprinkled and moistened the ground, the trees scattered flowers.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.58.30)
saptarṣayaḥ śāṁtiparā brāhmaṇāḥ śaṁsinaḥ priyāḥ| nāgā yāmakakakṣāyāṁ gaṁdharvā gītatatparāḥ
The Seven Sages were engaged in peace-rites, the Brahmins were dear eulogists; the Nagas stood as watchmen, the Gandharvas were devoted to singing.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.58.31)
prekṣaṇīye'psarovṛṁdaṁ vādye vidyādharā vṛtāḥ| gaṁgādyāḥ saritaḥ pāne gārhapatye hutāśanaḥ

Verse 32 (skanda.7.58.32)

He employed Vishvakarma, the craftsman, in works of construction and adornment; all kings stood before him, rendering service.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.58.33)
dṛśyaṁte bhāsvarai ratnaiḥ praskhalaṁto vibhūṣaṇaiḥ| tāndṛṣṭvā rāvaṇaḥ prāha prahastaṁ pratihārakam
They were seen stumbling under the weight of gleaming jewels and ornaments. Seeing them, Ravana said to Prahasta, the gatekeeper,
Verse 34 (skanda.7.58.34)
sevāṁ karttuṁ mama sthāne brūhi ke'tra samāgatāḥ| uvāca sa praṇamyāgre daṇḍapāṇirniśācaraḥ
"Tell me, who are these who have come here to serve me?" Then the demon Dandapani stepped forward, bowed, and said.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.58.35)
eṣa kākutstho māṁdhātā dhuṁdhumāro nalo'rjunaḥ| yayātirnahuṣo bhīmo rāghavo'yaṁ vidūrathaḥ
"This is Kakutstha, Mandhata, Dhundhumara, Nala, Arjuna, Yayati, Nahusha, Bhima, this one is Raghava, and this is Vidhuratha."
Verse 36 (skanda.7.58.36)
ete cānye ca bahavo rājāna iha cāgatāḥ| sevākarāstava sthāne nājāpāla iho gataḥ
"These and many other kings have come here to serve you; only Ajapala has not come here."
Verse 37 (skanda.7.58.37)
rāvaṇaḥ kupitaḥ prāha śīghraṁ dūta visarjaya| ityuktvā prahito dūto dhūmrākṣo nāma rākṣasaḥ
Ravana, enraged, said: "Send a messenger at once." Having said this, a rakshasa named Dhumraksha was sent as messenger.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.58.38)
dhūmrākṣa gaccha brūhi tvamajāpālaṁ mamājñayā| sevāṁ karttuṁ mamāgaccha karaṁ vā yaccha pārthiva
"Dhumraksha, go and tell Ajapala, by my command: O king, come to serve me, or else pay tribute,"
Verse 39 (skanda.7.58.39)
athavā caṁdrahāsena tvāṁ kariṣye vikaṁdharam| rāvaṇenaivamuktastu dhūmrākṣo garuḍo yathā
"or else I shall behead you with Chandrahasa." Thus commanded by Ravana, Dhumraksha, swift as Garuda,
Verse 40 (skanda.7.58.40)
saṁprāptastāṁ purīṁ ramyāṁ tava rājakulaṁ gataḥ| dadarśāyāṁtamekaṁ sa ajāpālamajāvṛtam
reached that lovely city and went to his royal palace. There he saw Ajapala coming alone, surrounded by goats,
Verse 41 (skanda.7.58.41)
muktakeśaṁ muktakacchaṁ svarṇakaṁbaladhāriṇam| yaṣṭiskaṁdhaṁ reṇuvṛtaṁ vyādhibhiḥ parivāritam
with loosened hair, loosened garment, wearing a golden blanket, a staff upon his shoulder, covered in dust, encircled by the diseases,
Verse 42 (skanda.7.58.42)
nighnaṁtamiva śārdūlaṁ sarvopadravanāśanam| mahyāmālikhya nāmāni vinighnaṁtaṁ dviṣāṁ gaṇam
striking as though a tiger, the destroyer of all calamities, tracing names upon the earth and thereby vanquishing the hosts of his foes.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.58.43)
snātaṁ bhuktaṁ nijasthāne kṛtakṛtyaṁ manuṁ yathā| dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭamanāḥ prāha dhūmrākṣo rāvaṇoditam
Bathed, fed, fulfilled in his own place like Manu — seeing him thus, Dhumraksha, with a delighted mind, delivered Ravana's message.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.58.44)
ajāpālo'pi sākṣepaṁ pratyuktvā kāraṇottaram| preṣayāmāsa dhūmrākṣaṁ tataḥ kṛtyaṁ samādadhe
Ajapala too, replying with a rebuke and a reasoned answer, sent Dhumraksha away; then he performed a ritual invocation.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.58.45)
jvaramākārayitvā tu provācedaṁ mahīpatiḥ| gaccha laṁkādhipasthānamācara tvaṁ yathoditam
Having invoked Fever, the king spoke thus: "Go to the abode of the lord of Lanka; act as instructed."
Verse 46 (skanda.7.58.46)
niyuktastvajapālena jvaro divi jagāma ha| gatvā ca kaṁpayāmāsa rāvaṇaṁ rākṣaseśvaram
Fever, commanded by Ajapala, went through the sky, and having arrived, caused Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, to shake and tremble.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.58.47)
rāvaṇastaṁ viditvā tu jvaraṁ paramadāruṇam| provāca tiṣṭhatu nṛpaḥ tena me na prayojanam
Recognizing that most terrible Fever, Ravana said: "Let the king remain as he is; I have no business with him."
Verse 48 (skanda.7.58.48)
tataḥ sa vijvaro rājā babhūva dhanadānujaḥ| evaṁ tasya caritrāṇi saṁti cānyāni koṭiśaḥ
Then that king, the younger brother of Dhanada, became free of the fever. Thus there are also millions of other deeds of his.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.58.49)
ajāpālasya deveśi sūryavattviṭkirīṭinaḥ| tenaiṣārādhitā devī ajāpālena dhīmatā| sarvarogapraśamanī sarvopadravanāśinī
O Goddess of gods, this Goddess was thus worshipped by the wise Ajapala, radiant like the sun and crowned — she who pacifies all diseases and destroys all calamities.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.58.50)
pūjayettāṁ vidhānena bhogepsuryadi mānavaḥ| gaṁdhairdhūpairalaṁkārairvastrairanyaiśca bhaktitaḥ
A man desiring enjoyment should worship her according to rule, with fragrance, incense, ornaments, garments, and other offerings, with devotion.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.58.51)
iti te kathitaṁ sarvamajādevyāḥ samudbhavam| sarvaduḥkhopaśamanaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam
Thus has the entire origin-story of the Goat-Goddess (Aja-devi) been told to you, which pacifies all sorrows and destroys all sins.
