Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 8
The Majesty of Sri Someshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.7.8.1)
devyuvāca| punaḥ kathaya deveśa māhātmyaṁ lokaśaṁkara| śrīsomeśvaradevasya sarvapātakanāśanam| brahmaviṣṇvīśadaivatyaṁ tathātra tritayaṁ vada
The Goddess said: O Lord of gods, O benefactor of the world, tell again the glory of Śrī Someśvara, destroyer of all sins. Also tell of the threefold divinity of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Īśa here.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.8.2)
īśvara uvāca| śṛṇuṣvaikamanā bhūtvā mama gopyaṁ purātanam| tasmim̐lliṁge ca yadvṛttamāścaryaṁ paramaṁ mahat
Īśvara said: Listen with a focused mind to this ancient secret of mine — what has occurred in this liṅga is a supreme and great wonder.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.8.3)
ṣaṣṭikoṭi sahasrāṇi ṛṣīṇāmūrddhvaretasām| tasmim̐lliṁge praviṣṭāni te ghṛtāhutirivānale
Sixty thousand crores of chaste sages of upward-flowing seed entered into that liṅga, as an oblation of ghee poured into fire.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.8.4)
siddhirvṛddhistathā tuṣṭirṛddhiḥ puṣṭistu paṁcamī| kīrtiḥ śāṁtistathā lakṣmīstasmilliṁge samutthitā
Siddhi, Vṛddhi, Tuṣṭi, Ṛddhi, and fifthly Puṣṭi, as well as Kīrti, Śānti, and Lakṣmī — all these arose from that liṅga.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.8.5)
saptakoṭyastu maṁtrāṇāṁ siddhīnāṁ caiva saṁbhavaḥ| divyayogarasāścānye divyauṣadhirasāyanāḥ
Seventy million mantras and siddhis had their origin here, along with other divine yogic elixirs and divine medicinal alchemical essences.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.8.6)
gāruḍaṁ bhūtataṁtraṁ ca khecaryo vyaṁtarīstathā| te sarve saha yogena tasmālliṁgātsamutthitāḥ
The science of Garuḍa, the tantra of spirits, the arts of Khecarī and Vyantarī — all these, together with yoga, arose from that same liṅga.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.8.7)
anyāścaiva tu yāḥ kāścitsiddhayo'ṣṭau prakīrtitāḥ| tāḥ sarvāḥ saha liṁgena tasmātsthānātsamutthitāḥ
And whatever other eight siddhis are proclaimed — all of them, together with the liṅga, arose from that very place.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.8.8)
anyaddevi pravakṣyāmi atra siddhiṁ gatāstu ye| mamāṁśasaṁbhavāḥ prāptā asmim̐lliṁge layaṁ gatāḥ
O Goddess, I shall now tell you something else — those who attained perfection here, born of my own portion, merged into this very liṅga.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.8.9)
teṣāṁ ca vikramānsarvānpravakṣyāmyanupūrvaśaḥ| purākramā grahā muṇḍā guḍakāśca sahetukāḥ
I shall tell in due order all of their mighty deeds — Purākrama, Graha, Muṇḍa, Guḍaka, and Sahetuka.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.8.10)
vimalā daṁḍikāścaiva saptaite kutsikāḥ smṛtāḥ| asminlliṁge purā siddhā yogātpāśupatānmama
Vimalā and Daṇḍika — these seven are remembered as the Kutsikas. They attained perfection in this liṅga long ago through my Pāśupata yoga.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.8.11)
rudro viprastathā dānaścaṁdro mantho'valokakaḥ| sūryāvalokaśceti gārgeyāḥ sapta kīrttitāḥ
Rudra, Vipra, Dāna, Candra, Mantha, Avalokaka, and Sūryāvaloka — these seven are proclaimed as the Gārgeyas.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.8.12)
someśvare ca te siddhāḥ prabhāse varavarṇini| mūkamanyaḥ śivaścaiva prakāśaḥ kapilastathā
They too, O fair one, attained perfection at Someśvara, in Prabhāsa. Mūkamanya, Śiva, Prakāśa, and Kapila.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.8.13)
satkulaḥ karṇikāraśca pauruṣeyāḥ prakīrttitāḥ| someśvare purā siddhāḥ prabhāse pāpanāśane
Satkula and Karṇikāra — these are proclaimed as the Pauruṣeyas. They attained perfection long ago at Someśvara, in sin-destroying Prabhāsa.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.8.14)
yugeyuge purā siddhāstasmim̐lliṁge priye mama| ete cānye ca ye viprā bhaviṣyaṁti kalau yuge
In age after age, from ancient times, these have attained perfection in that liṅga dear to me. These and other brāhmaṇas yet to come in the Kali age.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.8.15)
tatra siddhiṁ gamiṣyaṁti durllabhāṁ tridaśairapi| etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ talliṁgaṁ siddhidaṁ param
will attain there that perfection which is hard to obtain even for the gods. All this has been told to you — that liṅga is the supreme bestower of perfection.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.8.16)
durllabhaṁ sarvamarttyānāṁ prabhāse tu vyavasthitam| na ca kaścidvijānāti aśubhaiḥ karmabhirvṛtaḥ
This is hard to attain for all mortals, though it stands right there in Prabhāsa. No one enveloped by inauspicious deeds is able to know it.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.8.17)
grahadoṣāstu ye kecidbhūtadoṣāstathā pare| ḍākinīpretavetālā rākṣasā grahapūtanāḥ
Whatever afflictions of planets there are, and other afflictions of spirits — ḍākinīs, ghosts, vetālas, rākṣasas, grahas, and pūtanās.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.8.18)
piśācā yātudhānāśca mātaro jātahārikāḥ| bālagrahāstathā cānye buddhāścaiva tu ye grahāḥ
piśācas, yātudhānas, the Mātṛs, seizers of newborns, seizers of children, and other grahas known as buddha-grahas.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.8.19)
jvarabhūta grahāścānye hyatisārabhagaṁdarāḥ| aśmarī mūtrakṛcchraṁ ca rogāścānye sahasraśaḥ
fever-causing grahas and spirits, dysentery, fistula, kidney-stones, painful urination, and a thousand other diseases.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.8.20)
durnāmakāstathā cānye kuṣṭharogāstathā pare| kṣayarogāstathā cānye vātagulmāstathaiva ca| anye caiva tu ye kecidvyādhayastu prakīrttitāḥ
the disease called durnāmaka, leprosy, consumption, wind-tumors, and whatever other ailments are named.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.8.21)
someśvaraṁ samāsādya tasya liṁgasya darśanāt| sarva eva vinaśyaṁti vahnau kṣiptamivendhanam
Upon reaching Someśvara, merely by the sight of that liṅga, all these are destroyed, like fuel cast into fire.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.8.22)
upasargāśca cānye sarpaghoṇapavṛścikāḥ| sarve tatra vinaśyaṁti śrīsomeśvaradarśanāt
Other afflictions [a portion of the source text is illegible here] and the bites of serpents, scorpions, and the like — all these are destroyed there by the mere sight of Śrī Someśvara.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.8.23)
yo'sau someśvaro nāmnā paścimo bhairavaḥ smṛtaḥ| kālāgnirudranātheti paryāyairnāmabhiḥ śrutaḥ
This very one, known by the name Someśvara, is remembered in the west as Bhairava, and is heard of by other equivalent names such as Kālāgnirudranātha.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.8.24)
tasmiṁstiṣṭhāmi deveśi bhaktānugrahakārakaḥ| sarvaṁ ca duṣkṛtaṁ nṛṇāṁ bhakṣayāmi na saṁśayaḥ
In that form I dwell, O sovereign Goddess, as the bestower of grace on devotees. I devour all the evil deeds of men, without doubt.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.8.25)
yo'sau prāṇaḥ śarīrastho dehināṁ dehasaṁcaraḥ| brahmāṁḍametadyasyāṁtareko yaścāpyanekadhā
That very breath which dwells in bodies, moving through the frame of embodied beings, within whom this entire universe abides, who is one and yet manifold.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.8.26)
vedāḥ sarve'pi yaṁ devaṁ praśaṁsaṁti maharṣayaḥ| parasya brahmaṇo rūpaṁ yasya dvāreṇa labhyate
the god whom all the Vedas and great sages praise, through whose gateway the form of the supreme Brahman is attained.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.8.27)
so'yaṁ devi mahādevaḥ prabhāse saṁvyavasthitaḥ| yathā guptaṁ gṛhe ratnaṁ na kaścidviṁdate naraḥ
That very Mahādeva, O Goddess, stands established in Prabhāsa — just as no man finds a jewel hidden within a house.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.8.28)
prabhāse tu sthitaṁ tadvadratnabhūtaṁ gṛhe mama| tacca liṁgaṁ purā kalpe saptapātālabhedakam
Just so, this one stands hidden in Prabhāsa, in my house, like a jewel. In a former kalpa, that liṅga pierced through the seven nether worlds.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.8.29)
kathitaṁ koṭi sūryasya pralayānalasaṁnibham| tenakālāgnirudreti proktaṁ someśvaraḥ purā
It is described as resembling ten million suns, like the fire of universal dissolution. For this reason, Someśvara was called Kālāgnirudra of old.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.8.30)
iti devi samāsena kathitaṁ tava pārvati| someśvarasya māhātmyaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam
Thus, O Goddess Pārvatī, I have told you in brief the glory of Someśvara, the destroyer of all sins.
