Chapter 83All chaptersChapter 85

Verse 1 (skanda.7.84.1)

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi ādinārāyaṇaṁ harim| tasyāśca pūrvadigbhāge sarvapātakanāśanam

Ishvara said: Thereafter, O great Goddess, one should go to Adinarayana Hari, situated to the east of that place (Yogeshvari), who destroys all sins.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.84.2)

pādukāsanasaṁyuktaṁ sarvadaityāṁtakāriṇam| ādau kṛtayuge devi daityo'bhūnmeghavāhanaḥ

He is seated upon his sandal-throne, the ender of all demons. O Devi, at the very beginning, in the Krita age, there was a demon named Meghavahana.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.84.3)

mahābalo mahākāyo yojanāyutavistaraḥ| ajeyaḥ sarvadevānāṁ trailokyakṣayakārakaḥ| brahmaṇā tasya tuṣṭena varo datto varānane

He was of immense strength, of enormous body, extending ten thousand yojanas, unconquerable by all the gods, and a destroyer of the three worlds. O fair-faced one, Brahma, pleased with him, granted him a boon.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.84.4)

yadā pādukayā viṣṇustvāṁ haniṣyati saṁyuge| tadaiva mṛtyurbhavitā nānyathā maraṇaṁ tava

'Only when Vishnu strikes you with his sandal in battle will your death occur; otherwise there shall be no death for you.'

Verse 5 (skanda.7.84.5)

iti labdhavaro daityaḥ saṁtāpayati bhūtalam| yugānāṁ koṭimekāṁ tu sadevāsuramānuṣam

Having obtained this boon, the demon tormented the whole earth, together with gods, demons, and men, for a full crore of ages.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.84.6)

saṁtapya bahudhā devi dakṣiṇo dadhimāgataḥ| tatra vidhvaṁsayāmāsa ṛṣīṇāmāśramāṇi vai

O Devi, having tormented the world in many ways, he came from the south to the ocean of curds; there he destroyed the hermitages of the sages.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.84.7)

tatasta ṛṣayaḥ sarve vidhvastāśramamaṇḍalāḥ| śaraṇaṁ caiva saṁprāptā devadevaṁ tu keśavam| ajeyaṁ taṁ tu saṁjñātvā tuṣṭuvurgaruḍadhvajam

Then all those sages, whose circle of hermitages had been destroyed, took refuge in the god of gods, Keshava; knowing him (the demon) to be unconquerable, they praised the Garuda-bannered one.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.84.8)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| namaḥ paramakalyāṇakalyāṇāyātmayogine| janārddanāya devāya śrīdharāya ca vedhase

The sages said: Salutations to the one who is auspiciousness itself even to supreme auspiciousness, the self-realized yogi, the god Janardana, Shridhara, and the Creator.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.84.9)

namaḥ kamalakiṁjalkasuvarṇamukuṭāya ca| keśavāyātisūkṣmāya bṛhanmūrte namonamaḥ

Salutations to the one whose golden crown resembles the pollen of the lotus; salutations again and again to Keshava, the most subtle and yet the vastest of forms.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.84.10)

mahātmane vareṇyāya namaḥ paṁkajanābhaye| namo'stu māyāharaye haraye harivedhase

Salutations to the great soul, the most excellent one, the lotus-naveled one; salutations to Hari who removes illusion, and to Hari the Creator.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.84.11)

hiraṇyagarbhagarbhāya jagataḥ kāraṇātmane| acyutāya namo nityamanantāya namonamaḥ

Salutations to the one who is the very womb of Hiranyagarbha, the essential cause of the world; eternal salutations to the imperishable one, and again and again to the infinite one.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.84.12)

namo māyāpaṭacchanna jagaddhātre mahātmane| saṁsārasāgarottāra jñānapotapradāyine| akuṁṭhamataye dhātre sargasthityaṁtakarmaṇe

Salutations to the great-souled sustainer of the world, veiled by the covering of illusion; to the giver of the boat of knowledge to cross the ocean of worldly existence, to the one of unimpeded intellect, the sustainer who performs the acts of creation, preservation, and dissolution.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.84.13)

yathā hi vāsudeveti prokte naśyati pātakam| tathā vilayamabhyetu daityo'yaṁ meghavāhanaḥ

Just as sin is destroyed merely by the utterance of the name 'Vasudeva,' so may this demon Meghavahana meet his dissolution.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.84.14)

yathā viṣṇuḥ svabhakteṣu pāpamāpnoti saṁsthitam| tathā vināśamāyātu daityo'yaṁ pāpakarmakṛt

Just as Vishnu takes upon himself the sin residing in his devotees, so may this demon of sinful deeds meet his destruction.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.84.15)

smṛtamātro yathā viṣṇuḥ sarvaṁ pāpaṁ vyapohati| tathā praṇāśamabhyetu daityo'yaṁ meghavāhanaḥ

Just as Vishnu, merely by being remembered, wipes away all sin, so may this demon Meghavahana come to utter destruction.

Verse 16 (skanda.7.84.16)

bhavaṁtu bhadrāṇi samastadoṣāḥ prayāṁtu nāśaṁ jagato'khilasya| abhedyabhaktyā parameśvareśe smṛte jagaddhātari vāsudeve

May all be auspicious, and may every fault of the entire world come to naught, when Vasudeva — the sustainer of the world, the Lord even of the supreme lords — is remembered with unbreakable devotion.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.84.17)

ye bhūtale ye divi ye'ntarikṣe rasātale prāṇigaṇāśca kecit| bhavantu te siddhiyutā narottamāḥ smṛte jagaddhātari vāsudeve

Whatever hosts of living beings exist on earth, in heaven, in the atmosphere, or in the netherworld, may they all become excellent men endowed with accomplishment, when Vasudeva, the sustainer of the world, is remembered.

Verse 18 (skanda.7.84.18)

ye prāṇinaḥ kutracidatra saṁti brahmāṇḍamadhye parataśca kecit| teṣāṁ tu siddhiḥ paramāstvaniṁdyā stute jagaddhātari vāsudeve

Whatever beings exist anywhere within this universe, or even beyond it, may they all attain blameless, supreme accomplishment, when Vasudeva, the sustainer of the world, is praised.

Verse 19 (skanda.7.84.19)

īśvara uvāca| iti stutastadā devi ādinārāyaṇo hariḥ| jñātvā sa bhāvi kāryaṁ tatsamāruhya ca pādukām

Ishvara said: O Devi, thus praised, Adinarayana Hari, knowing the deed that was to be done, then mounted upon his sandal.

Verse 20 (skanda.7.84.20)

babhūva teṣāṁ pratyakṣa ṛṣīṇāṁ pāpanāśanaḥ| uvāca praṇatānsarvānkiṁ vā kāryaṁ hṛdi sthitam

The sin-destroying Lord became manifest before those sages, and said to all of them, bowing before him: 'What matter lies in your hearts?'

Verse 21 (skanda.7.84.21)

kathyatāṁ tatkariṣyāmi yuṣmatstotreṇa tarpitaḥ

'Speak, and I shall do it; I am satisfied by your hymn of praise.'

Verse 22 (skanda.7.84.22)

ityuktā ṛṣayaḥ sarve kṛtāṁjalipuṭāḥ sthitāḥ| ādidevaṁ hariṁ procuḥ sarve nataśirodharāḥ

Having heard this, all the sages stood with joined palms, and, bowing their heads, all spoke to the primal god Hari —

Verse 23 (skanda.7.84.23)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| jānāsi sarvaṁ tvaṁ deva na cāstyaviditaṁ tava| imaṁ daityaṁ mahādeva saṁharasva mahābalam| yathedaṁ sakalaṁ viśvaṁ nirātaṁkaṁ bhavetprabho

The sages said: O god, you know everything; nothing is unknown to you. O great god, destroy this mighty demon, so that, O Lord, this entire universe may become free of terror.

Verse 24 (skanda.7.84.24)

ityuktastaistadā viṣṇurdaityamāhūya saṁyuge| tāḍayāmāsa taṁ daityaṁ hṛdi pādukayā śubhe

When they had spoken thus, Vishnu then summoned the demon to battle, and, O auspicious one, struck that demon on the chest with his sandal.

Verse 25 (skanda.7.84.25)

sa hataḥ patito daityo vigatāsurmahodadhau| hatvā daityavaraṁ devastatra sthāne sthito'bhavat| pādukāsanasaṁsthastu tatrādyāpi varānane

Struck down, that demon fell, lifeless, into the great ocean. Having slain that foremost demon, the Lord remained established in that very spot, and, O fair-faced one, he sits there even today upon his sandal-throne.

Verse 26 (skanda.7.84.26)

yastaṁ pūjayate bhaktyā ekādaśyāṁ narottamaḥ| sośvavamedhaphalaṁ prāpya modate divi devavat

The excellent man who worships him with devotion on Ekadashi obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice and rejoices in heaven like a god.

Verse 27 (skanda.7.84.27)

golakṣaṁ brāhmaṇe dattvā yatphalaṁ prāpnuyānnaraḥ| tadādideve govinde dṛṣṭe bhaktyā phalaṁ labhet

Whatever fruit a man obtains by giving a hundred thousand cows to a Brahmin, that same fruit he obtains by devoutly beholding the primal god Govinda.

Verse 28 (skanda.7.84.28)

kalau kṛtayugaṁ teṣāṁ kleśasteṣāṁ sukhādhikaḥ| ādinārāyaṇo devo yeṣāṁ hṛdayasaṁsthitaḥ

For those in whose hearts the god Adinarayana abides, the Kali age itself becomes like the Krita age, and even their hardship becomes greater than happiness.

Verse 29 (skanda.7.84.29)

ekādaśyāṁ ravidine snātvā saṁnihitā jale| ādinārāyaṇaṁ pūjya mucyate bhavabandhanāt

Bathing in the nearby waters on an Ekadashi that falls on a Sunday, and worshipping Adinarayana, one is freed from the bondage of worldly existence.

Verse 30 (skanda.7.84.30)

iti te kathitaṁ devi māhātmyaṁ viṣṇudaivatam| śrutaṁ pāpaharaṁ nṛṇāṁ dāridryaughavināśanam

Thus, O Devi, I have related to you this glory of the god Vishnu, hearing which removes the sins of men and destroys the accumulation of poverty.
