The Glory of Nilarudra

Verse 1 (skanda.7.88.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि नीलरुद्रं द्वितीयकम्। भूतेशादुत्तरे भागे धनुषां षोडशे स्थितम्

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi nīlarudraṁ dvitīyakam| bhūteśāduttare bhāge dhanuṣāṁ ṣoḍaśe sthitam

Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the second, Nilarudra, situated to the north of Bhutesha, at a distance of sixteen bows.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.88.2)

महालिंगं महादेवि गणगंधर्वपूजितम्। संस्नाप्य तं विधानेन ईशमंत्रेण पूजयेत्

mahāliṅgaṁ mahādevi gaṇagandharvapūjitam| saṁsnāpya taṁ vidhānena īśamantreṇa pūjayet

A great Linga, O great Goddess, worshipped by the ganas and gandharvas; having duly bathed him, one should worship with the Isha mantra.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.88.3)

कुमुदोत्पलसंभारैः सम्यक्संभावितात्मवान्। कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणां तस्य नमस्कारेण पूजयेत्

kumudotpalasaṁbhāraiḥ samyaksaṁbhāvitātmavān| kṛtvā pradakṣiṇāṁ tasya namaskāreṇa pūjayet

With offerings of white water-lilies and blue lotuses, with a well-composed mind, having circumambulated him, one should worship with obeisance.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.88.4)

एवं कृत्वा नरो देवि राजसूयफलं लभेत्। वृषस्तत्रैव दातव्यः सम्यग्यात्राफलेप्सुभिः

evaṁ kṛtvā naro devi rājasūyaphalaṁ labhet| vṛṣastatraiva dātavyaḥ samyagyātrāphalepsubhiḥ

Doing thus, O Goddess, a man obtains the fruit of a Rajasuya sacrifice; a bull should be given there by those desiring the full fruit of the pilgrimage.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.88.5)

नीलांजननिभो दैत्यो निहतश्चांतकः पुरा। तस्य रोदयिता स्त्रीणां नीलरुद्रस्ततः स्मृतः

nīlāñjananibho daityo nihataścāntakaḥ purā| tasya rodayitā strīṇāṁ nīlarudrastataḥ smṛtaḥ

Long ago, a Daitya named Antaka, dark as black collyrium, was slain here; since he thereby made that Daitya's women weep, he was thereafter remembered as Nilarudra.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.88.6)

तस्य संक्षेपतः प्रोक्तं माहात्म्यं पापनाशनम्। सम्यक्छ्रद्धान्वितैः प्राप्यं श्राव्यं तद्दर्शनोत्सुकैः

tasya saṁkṣepataḥ proktaṁ māhātmyaṁ pāpanāśanam| samyakchraddhānvitaiḥ prāpyaṁ śrāvyaṁ taddarśanotsukaiḥ

Thus has his sin-destroying glory been told in brief — to be attained and heard by those endowed with proper faith who are eager for his sight.
