Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 94
The Glory of Bhairaveshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.7.94.1)
īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi bhairaveśvaramuttamam| tasyaiva vahnikoṇasthaṁ dhanuṣāṁ daśake sthitam
Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the excellent Bhairaveshvara, situated in the southeast corner of that place, at a distance of ten bows.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.94.2)
sarvakāmapradaṁ devi dāridryaughavināśanam| pūrvaṁ caṇḍeśvaraṁ nāma khyātaṁ kṛtayuge priye
Bestower of all desires, O Goddess, destroyer of the flood of poverty; formerly, in the Krita Yuga, O beloved, it was known by the name Chandeshvara.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.94.3)
caṇḍo nāma gaṇo devi tena cārādhitaṁ purā| divyābdānāṁ sahasraṁ tu tena caṇḍeśvaraṁ smṛtam
The gana named Chanda, O Goddess, worshipped him formerly, for a thousand divine years; thereby he was remembered as Chandeshvara.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.94.4)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā devadeveśaṁ spṛṣṭvā ca susamāhitaḥ| mucyate sakalātpāpādājanmamaraṇāntikāt
Having beheld that Lord of the gods of gods, and touched him, with a well-composed mind, one is freed from all sin, from birth right up to the end of death.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.94.5)
tatra kṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṁ māse bhādrapade priye| upavāsa paro bhūtvā yaḥ karoti prajāgaram| sa yāti paramaṁ sthānaṁ yatra devo maheśvaraḥ
There, on the dark fourteenth day in the month of Bhadrapada, O beloved, he who, wholly fasting, keeps a night vigil, goes to the supreme abode where the god Maheshvara dwells.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.94.6)
vācikaṁ mānasaṁ pāpaṁ karmaṇā yadupārjitam| tatsarvaṁ nāśamāyāti tasya liṅgasya darśanāt
Whatever sin of speech or mind, or acquired through action, all of it is destroyed by the sight of that Linga.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.94.7)
tilā hiraṇyaṁ vastrāṇi tatra deyaṁ manīṣiṇe| sarvakilviṣanāśārthaṁ samyagyātrāphalepsunā
Sesame, gold, and garments should be given there to a wise man, by one desiring the full fruit of the pilgrimage, for the destruction of all sin.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.94.8)
bhairavākāramāsthāya kalpānte sa haredyataḥ| viśvaṁ samagraṁ deveśi tenāsau bhairavaḥ smṛtaḥ
Since, taking the form of Bhairava at the end of the Kalpa, he consumes the entire universe, O Lady of the gods — thereby he is remembered as Bhairava.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.94.9)
asminkalpe mahādevi prabhāsakṣetramāsthitaḥ| babhūva bhairavo rudraḥ kalpānte liṅgamūrtimān
In this Kalpa, O great Goddess, established in the field of Prabhasa, the Rudra Bhairava came to be, at the end of the Kalpa, embodied in the Linga.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.94.10)
evaṁ saṁkṣepataḥ proktaṁ māhātmyaṁ bhairaveśvaram| yacchrutvā mucyate jantuḥ pātakādatibhairavāt
Thus has been told, in brief, the glory of Bhairaveshvara; by hearing which a creature is freed even from the most dreadful sin.
