The Command to the Kinkaras

Verse 1 (skanda.8.100.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तस्मिन्भये समापन्ने विनाशभयसूचकाः । हिरण्याक्षपुरे घोरा उत्पाता ह्यभवन् तदा

sanatkumāra uvāca | tasminbhaye samāpanne vināśabhayasūcakāḥ | hiraṇyākṣapure ghorā utpātā hyabhavan tadā

Sanatkumara said: When that danger drew near, terrible portents, foretelling the fear of destruction, then occurred in the city of Hiranyaksha.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.100.2)

अट्टालका विशीर्यन्ते देवताश्चाहसन्निव । शिवा नदन्ति दैत्यानां गृहेषु च सभासु च

aṭṭālakā viśīryante devatāścāhasanniva | śivā nadanti daityānāṁ gṛheṣu ca sabhāsu ca

Watchtowers crumbled, the images of the gods seemed to laugh, and jackals howled in the houses and assembly-halls of the Daityas.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.100.3)

अकस्माच्चाभवत्तत्र पौराणां भैरवो रवः । पादपाश्च विना वातं पतन्त्युन्मूलिता भुवि । भास्करश्च कबन्धाभो युद्धञ्चाप्यत्र दृश्यते

akasmāccābhavattatra paurāṇāṁ bhairavo ravaḥ | pādapāśca vinā vātaṁ patantyunmūlitā bhuvi | bhāskaraśca kabandhābho yuddhañcāpyatra dṛśyate

Suddenly a terrifying uproar arose among the citizens; trees, uprooted, fell to the ground without any wind; the sun appeared headless, like a trunk without a head, and the phantom of a battle too was seen there.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.100.4)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । एतान्यन्यानि च तदा निमित्तानि महान्ति च । संलक्ष्य राजा दैत्यानामसुरानिदमब्रवीत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | etānyanyāni ca tadā nimittāni mahānti ca | saṁlakṣya rājā daityānāmasurānidamabravīt

Sanatkumara said: Observing these and other great omens, the king of the Daityas spoke thus to the Asuras:

Verse 5 (skanda.8.100.5)

निमित्तान्यभि लक्ष्यन्ते महान्त्यसुरपुङ्गवाः । नैव तान्यनिमित्तानि दृश्यते च भयं महत्

nimittānyabhi lakṣyante mahāntyasurapuṅgavāḥ | naiva tānyanimittāni dṛśyate ca bhayaṁ mahat

"Great omens are being observed, O bulls among the Asuras; these are surely not without cause, and great fear is apparent."

Verse 6 (skanda.8.100.6)

हृतराज्याश्च देवेशा न ते स्थास्यन्ति निष्क्रियाः । नूनन्ते किञ्चिदाश्रित्य कुर्वन्ति समरं प्रति

hṛtarājyāśca deveśā na te sthāsyanti niṣkriyāḥ | nūnante kiñcidāśritya kurvanti samaraṁ prati

"The lords of the gods, their kingdom seized, will not remain inactive; surely, taking refuge in something, they are making ready for battle."

Verse 7 (skanda.8.100.7)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रह्लादोसुरसत्तमः । प्रणम्य पितरं सम्यगिदं वचनमब्रवीत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā prahlādosurasattamaḥ | praṇamya pitaraṁ samyagidaṁ vacanamabravīt

Sanatkumara said: Having heard his words, Prahlada, best of Asuras, bowing to his father, duly spoke this word:

Verse 8 (skanda.8.100.8)

प्रह्लाद उवाच । सुतोहं तव दैत्येन्द्र पिता त्वं मम धर्मतः । न तवास्मद्विधैर्बुद्धिराधेया दैत्यसत्तम

prahlāda uvāca | sutohaṁ tava daityendra pitā tvaṁ mama dharmataḥ | na tavāsmadvidhairbuddhirādheyā daityasattama

Prahlada said: "I am your son, O lord of the Daityas, and you are rightfully my father; it is not fitting, O best of Daityas, for ones like us to offer you counsel."

Verse 9 (skanda.8.100.9)

तथापि तु वयं प्रीत्या इच्छन्तो राज्यमक्षयम् । वक्ष्यामो बालभावेन तन्न संस्मर्त्तुमर्हसि

tathāpi tu vayaṁ prītyā icchanto rājyamakṣayam | vakṣyāmo bālabhāvena tanna saṁsmarttumarhasi

"Yet still, out of affection, desiring your imperishable rule, we shall speak in our childlike way - you should not take this amiss."

Verse 10 (skanda.8.100.10)

अद्य रात्रौ मया स्वप्ने दृष्टोसौ नररूपवान् । वराहरूपं संगत्य भवन्तं निगृहीतवान् । न तथा तद्यथा स्याद्धि तथा त्वं सम्यगाचर

adya rātrau mayā svapne dṛṣṭosau nararūpavān | varāharūpaṁ saṁgatya bhavantaṁ nigṛhītavān | na tathā tadyathā syāddhi tathā tvaṁ samyagācara

"This very night, in a dream, I saw a man-formed being who, having assumed the form of a boar, seized you. Let it not come to pass so - act rightly, so that it does not."

Verse 11 (skanda.8.100.11)

हिरण्याक्ष उवाच । एवमेतन्न सन्देहो भवान्यद्धर्मतस्तदा । दृष्टवाँस्तद्यथातत्त्वमेवमेतन्न संशयः

hiraṇyākṣa uvāca | evametanna sandeho bhavānyaddharmatastadā | dṛṣṭavā~stadyathātattvamevametanna saṁśayaḥ

Hiranyaksha said: "So it is - there is no doubt that you, in your righteousness, saw that in its true form; of this there is no doubt."

Verse 12 (skanda.8.100.12)

अहमद्य गतः स्वप्ने त्र्यम्बकस्य निवेशने । ततः स मामिदं प्राह भगवान् गोवृषध्वजः

ahamadya gataḥ svapne tryambakasya niveśane | tataḥ sa māmidaṁ prāha bhagavān govṛṣadhvajaḥ

"I too, this night, went in a dream to the abode of Tryambaka; there the blessed god whose banner bears the bull spoke this to me:"

Verse 13 (skanda.8.100.13)

एतावद् भवतो दैत्य राज्यमिन्द्रत्वमेव च । यच्छेमां त्वं प्रियां पुत्र सहयक्षाय सुप्रभाम्

etāvad bhavato daitya rājyamindratvameva ca | yacchemāṁ tvaṁ priyāṁ putra sahayakṣāya suprabhām

"'This much, O Daitya, was your kingdom and your lordship; now, O son, give up this cherished, radiant [glory of yours] to the Yaksha as well.'"

Verse 14 (skanda.8.100.14)

क्षिप्रमेतां प्रयच्छाद्य मुकुटं हारमेव च । केयूराङ्गदकं चैव खङ्गं रुचकमेव च

kṣiprametāṁ prayacchādya mukuṭaṁ hārameva ca | keyūrāṅgadakaṁ caiva khaṅgaṁ rucakameva ca

"'Give this up swiftly, this very day - the crown and the necklace, the armlets and the bracelets, the sword and the jewel too.'"

Verse 15 (skanda.8.100.15)

कटके शासनञ्चैव दुकूलञ्च तथोतरीम् । अनिच्छतो मे संगृह्य शक्रस्य प्रददौ तदा

kaṭake śāsanañcaiva dukūlañca tathotarīm | anicchato me saṁgṛhya śakrasya pradadau tadā

"'- the armlet, the royal seal of authority, the fine silk, and the upper garment as well.' Then, seizing them from me though I was unwilling, he gave them at once to Shakra.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.100.16)

ततो मां भगवानाह मत्समीपे त्वया सदा । कल्यं प्रभृति वस्तव्यं किन्ते राज्येन दैत्यप

tato māṁ bhagavānāha matsamīpe tvayā sadā | kalyaṁ prabhṛti vastavyaṁ kinte rājyena daityapa

Then the blessed lord said to me: 'From tomorrow onward you must always dwell near me; what use, O lord of the Daityas, is a kingdom to you now?'

Verse 17 (skanda.8.100.17)

यदेतद्धि मया दृष्टं न तन्मिथ्या भविष्यति । सर्वथा नास्ति दैत्यानां मयैकेन भवं त्विह

yadetaddhi mayā dṛṣṭaṁ na tanmithyā bhaviṣyati | sarvathā nāsti daityānāṁ mayaikena bhavaṁ tviha

"This that I have seen shall surely not prove false. In no way, for the sake of the Daityas, shall things now rest on me alone."

Verse 18 (skanda.8.100.18)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दैत्याः सर्वे तदाब्रुवन् । मिथ्यैतत् स्वप्नगतयो मिथ्या राजन् प्रकीर्तिताः

sanatkumāra uvāca | tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā daityāḥ sarve tadābruvan | mithyaitat svapnagatayo mithyā rājan prakīrtitāḥ

Sanatkumara said: Having heard his words, all the Daityas then said, "This is false, O king; dream-visions have always been proclaimed false."

Verse 19 (skanda.8.100.19)

अन्धकः सहितोस्माभिर्योत्स्यते दैवतैः सह । योवध्यः सर्वभूतानां बलवानजितश्च ह

andhakaḥ sahitosmābhiryotsyate daivataiḥ saha | yovadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ balavānajitaśca ha

"Andhaka, who is unslayable by all beings, powerful and unconquered, shall fight against the gods, joined together with us."

Verse 20 (skanda.8.100.20)

तमाश्रित्य वयं सर्वे योत्स्यामो विज्वराः सुखम् । मा युध्यतु भवान्सार्धं सुरैः सुरबलार्दन

tamāśritya vayaṁ sarve yotsyāmo vijvarāḥ sukham | mā yudhyatu bhavānsārdhaṁ suraiḥ surabalārdana

"Relying on him, all of us shall fight happily, free of anguish; you need not fight against the gods yourself, O crusher of the strength of the gods."

Verse 21 (skanda.8.100.21)

त्वयि प्राणाः स्थितास्सर्वे दैत्यानां दानवैस्सह । त्वयि जीवति जीवामस्त्वञ्चेन्नासि कुतो वयम् । त्यक्त्वा वाद्य पुरं सर्वे प्रविशाम महोदधिम्

tvayi prāṇāḥ sthitāssarve daityānāṁ dānavaissaha | tvayi jīvati jīvāmastvañcennāsi kuto vayam | tyaktvā vādya puraṁ sarve praviśāma mahodadhim

"In you rest the very lives of all the Daityas together with the Danavas; while you live, we live - and if you are gone, what are we? Or else, today, let us all abandon the city together and take refuge in the great ocean."

Verse 22 (skanda.8.100.22)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा हिरण्याक्षो महासुरः । प्रहस्य तानिदं सम्यगुवाच वदतां वरः

sanatkumāra uvāca | teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā hiraṇyākṣo mahāsuraḥ | prahasya tānidaṁ samyaguvāca vadatāṁ varaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Having heard their words, the great Asura Hiranyaksha, that best of speakers, laughed and duly spoke to them:

Verse 23 (skanda.8.100.23)

स्रष्टा यः सर्वभूतानां दाता हर्त्ता तथैव च । विहितं तेन यत् पूर्वं तत्कुर्यात् कोन्यथा पुनः

sraṣṭā yaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ dātā harttā tathaiva ca | vihitaṁ tena yat pūrvaṁ tatkuryāt konyathā punaḥ

"He who is the creator of all beings, the giver, and likewise the taker away - what he has ordained beforehand, who else could ever alter?"

Verse 24 (skanda.8.100.24)

यदि मृत्युरवश्यं मे विहितस्तेन दानवाः । अयुध्यमानमासीनमेत्यासौ मा वधिष्यति

yadi mṛtyuravaśyaṁ me vihitastena dānavāḥ | ayudhyamānamāsīnametyāsau mā vadhiṣyati

"If death has certainly been ordained for me by him, O Danavas, then it will come and slay me even as I sit unresisting, without fighting."

Verse 25 (skanda.8.100.25)

वीक्षध्वं तन्मम स्थानं सर्व एवासुरोत्तमाः । यत्र तिष्ठन्तमभ्येत्य न मा मृत्युर्नयिष्यति

vīkṣadhvaṁ tanmama sthānaṁ sarva evāsurottamāḥ | yatra tiṣṭhantamabhyetya na mā mṛtyurnayiṣyati

"Behold, then, all you best of Asuras, that place of mine where, standing firm, death, though it come, shall not carry me off."

Verse 26 (skanda.8.100.26)

अथवा नैव मृत्युर्मे विहितस्तेन दानवाः । युध्यमानं यथा पूर्वं नैव मां स नयिष्यति

athavā naiva mṛtyurme vihitastena dānavāḥ | yudhyamānaṁ yathā pūrvaṁ naiva māṁ sa nayiṣyati

"Or else, O Danavas, if death has not been ordained for me by him at all, then, fighting as before, he shall in no way carry me off."

Verse 27 (skanda.8.100.27)

मादृशः कथमेवैतत् कुर्यात् सद्भिर्विगर्हितम् । बाले मृत्युं समावेश्य ततश्चात्मान्तरेक्षणम्

mādṛśaḥ kathamevaitat kuryāt sadbhirvigarhitam | bāle mṛtyuṁ samāveśya tataścātmāntarekṣaṇam

"How could one like me do this thing, censured by the virtuous - place the burden of facing death upon a mere child, and then look only to my own safety?"

Verse 28 (skanda.8.100.28)

रणे रिपूणां कदनं कृत्वैकश्चाप्यनेकशः । पृष्ठं दद्यात् पुनस्तेषां मादृशो दानवेश्वराः

raṇe ripūṇāṁ kadanaṁ kṛtvaikaścāpyanekaśaḥ | pṛṣṭhaṁ dadyāt punasteṣāṁ mādṛśo dānaveśvarāḥ

"Having wrought the slaughter of enemies single-handed against many in battle, should one like me, O lords of the Danavas, then turn my back to them again?"

Verse 29 (skanda.8.100.29)

विप्रचित्तिरुवाच । देवा ह्यनेकशः सर्वे जिता नष्टाश्च सर्वशः । पुनश्चायान्ति न यथा तथा सर्वे यतामहे

vipracittiruvāca | devā hyanekaśaḥ sarve jitā naṣṭāśca sarvaśaḥ | punaścāyānti na yathā tathā sarve yatāmahe

Vipracitti said: "All the gods have already been conquered and utterly destroyed many times over; let us all now strive so that they may never come again."

Verse 30 (skanda.8.100.30)

हिरण्याक्ष उवाच । अमरं देवता ज्ञात्वा स्वमात्मानं सुदुर्लभम् । जीवन्तः सुचिरेणापि भूयो लप्स्यामहे वयम्

hiraṇyākṣa uvāca | amaraṁ devatā jñātvā svamātmānaṁ sudurlabham | jīvantaḥ sucireṇāpi bhūyo lapsyāmahe vayam

Hiranyaksha said: "Knowing the gods to be immortal, and knowing our own selves to be exceedingly hard to regain, we, remaining alive, shall win this back again, even if only after a very long time."

Verse 31 (skanda.8.100.31)

राज्यमेव विजानन्तो विपलायन्ति नित्यशः । अस्माकममरत्वन्तु नैवास्त्यसुरसत्तमाः

rājyameva vijānanto vipalāyanti nityaśaḥ | asmākamamaratvantu naivāstyasurasattamāḥ

"Knowing only the kingdom to be at stake, they always flee away; but for us, O best of Asuras, there is indeed no immortality at all."

Verse 32 (skanda.8.100.32)

नष्टानामप्यतोस्माकं जीविताशा न विद्यते । तस्यामसत्यां पश्याम यत् प्राप्तं तद्धि नो वरम्

naṣṭānāmapyatosmākaṁ jīvitāśā na vidyate | tasyāmasatyāṁ paśyāma yat prāptaṁ taddhi no varam

"Therefore, once destroyed, we have no hope of life remaining. That hope being absent, let us see it thus - whatever comes to us, that indeed is best for us."

Verse 33 (skanda.8.100.33)

मा कृथा नाशने बुद्धिं युद्धे बुद्धिः स्थिता मम । सुयुद्धेन रणे प्राणा यान्तु मा क्लीबवद्धि नः

mā kṛthā nāśane buddhiṁ yuddhe buddhiḥ sthitā mama | suyuddhena raṇe prāṇā yāntu mā klībavaddhi naḥ

"Do not set your mind on destruction and flight; my resolve is fixed on battle. Let our lives depart in a well-fought battle - let it not be in a cowardly way for us."

Verse 34 (skanda.8.100.34)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तेषामेवन्तु वदतां सभायां सुरविद्विषाम् । वेगश्वासाभिसंरब्धो दानवः प्रत्यदृश्यत

sanatkumāra uvāca | teṣāmevantu vadatāṁ sabhāyāṁ suravidviṣām | vegaśvāsābhisaṁrabdho dānavaḥ pratyadṛśyata

Sanatkumara said: While those enemies of the gods were thus speaking in the assembly, a Danava, agitated and breathing hard with speed, suddenly appeared before them,

Verse 35 (skanda.8.100.35)

सम्यक् सन्त्रासित इव मृगराजेन निर्जने । करीव सिंहपादेन गरुडेनेव पन्नगः

samyak santrāsita iva mṛgarājena nirjane | karīva siṁhapādena garuḍeneva pannagaḥ

utterly terrified, as though chased by the lion-king in a lonely place - like an elephant terrified by a lion's paw, or a serpent by Garuda.

Verse 36 (skanda.8.100.36)

तदा स बद्धमुष्टिश्च दिशः सर्वा विलोकयन् । वेगेन निःश्वसन् गत्वा द्वारि द्वाःस्थमभाषत

tadā sa baddhamuṣṭiśca diśaḥ sarvā vilokayan | vegena niḥśvasan gatvā dvāri dvāḥsthamabhāṣata

Then, with clenched fists, glancing about in every direction and breathing hard from his haste, he went to the gate and spoke to the gatekeeper:

Verse 37 (skanda.8.100.37)

दानव उवाच । आवेदय सभापाल राज्ञे प्राप्तोनलः स्वयम् । सागरारक्षिकः क्षिप्रमकालं शीघ्रमुच्यते

dānava uvāca | āvedaya sabhāpāla rājñe prāptonalaḥ svayam | sāgarārakṣikaḥ kṣipramakālaṁ śīghramucyate

The Danava said: "Announce to the king, O guardian of the hall, that the fiery one, guard of the ocean, has come in person; be swift - this is urgent and cannot wait."

Verse 38 (skanda.8.100.38)

ततः प्रहस्य तं द्वाःस्थः सभापालोभिभाष्य तम् । उवाच मा भीर्भवतु कुतो भीस्ते महासुर

tataḥ prahasya taṁ dvāḥsthaḥ sabhāpālobhibhāṣya tam | uvāca mā bhīrbhavatu kuto bhīste mahāsura

Then the gatekeeper, the guardian of the hall, laughing, addressed him and said, "Have no fear - why should you be afraid, O great Asura?"

Verse 39 (skanda.8.100.39)

नेह सिंहोस्ति चोरो वा नान्यः श्वापद इत्यपि । न गावः पशवोन्ये वा भयं त्यज समाश्वस

neha siṁhosti coro vā nānyaḥ śvāpada ityapi | na gāvaḥ paśavonye vā bhayaṁ tyaja samāśvasa

"There is here no lion, no thief, nor any other wild beast; there are no cattle or other animals running loose. Cast off your fear and take heart."

Verse 40 (skanda.8.100.40)

स तथा तेन संप्रोक्तो शान्तश्चासुरसत्तमः । क्रुद्धः शब्दं तदा चक्रे महान्तं नादयन् दिशः

sa tathā tena saṁprokto śāntaścāsurasattamaḥ | kruddhaḥ śabdaṁ tadā cakre mahāntaṁ nādayan diśaḥ

Thus addressed by him, that best of Asuras, though meant to be soothed, grew angry instead, and made a great sound, making the directions resound.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.100.41)

तेभिगम्य तदा व्यास राजानं दानवेश्वरम् । ऊचुरेष किमप्यद्य दृष्टं कथयतेसुरः

tebhigamya tadā vyāsa rājānaṁ dānaveśvaram | ūcureṣa kimapyadya dṛṣṭaṁ kathayatesuraḥ

- the opening line of this verse is lost in the source manuscript - they, O Vyasa, then approaching the king, lord of the Danavas, said, "Let this Asura tell whatever he has seen today."

Verse 42 (skanda.8.100.42)

स राजन् सम्यगाश्वास्य दैत्यमेनं महायशाः । दानवानां हितार्थाय पृच्छस्व दितिनन्दन

sa rājan samyagāśvāsya daityamenaṁ mahāyaśāḥ | dānavānāṁ hitārthāya pṛcchasva ditinandana

"O king, O man of great renown, O son of Diti, having duly reassured this Daitya, question him for the good of the Danavas."

Verse 43 (skanda.8.100.43)

तेषां स राजा विप्रेन्द्र दानवानां महाबलः । श्रुत्वा तं दानवं व्यास इदं वचनमब्रवीत्

teṣāṁ sa rājā viprendra dānavānāṁ mahābalaḥ | śrutvā taṁ dānavaṁ vyāsa idaṁ vacanamabravīt

O foremost of brahmins, that mighty king of those Danavas, O Vyasa, having heard him, spoke this word to that Danava:

Verse 44 (skanda.8.100.44)

भयं न शक्नुते दैत्य मत्समीपेभिवर्तितुम् । ब्रूहि सर्वं यथादृष्टं समाश्वस्य तथातथम्

bhayaṁ na śaknute daitya matsamīpebhivartitum | brūhi sarvaṁ yathādṛṣṭaṁ samāśvasya tathātatham

"Fear cannot linger in my presence, O Daitya; take heart, and tell everything exactly as you saw it, point by point."

Verse 45 (skanda.8.100.45)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततस्स दानवो व्यास राजानं विगतज्वरः । प्रणम्य प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमिदं सम्यगुवाच ह

sanatkumāra uvāca | tatassa dānavo vyāsa rājānaṁ vigatajvaraḥ | praṇamya prāñjalirvākyamidaṁ samyaguvāca ha

Sanatkumara said: Then, O Vyasa, that Danava, his anguish now gone, bowing to the king with joined palms, duly spoke this word:

Verse 46 (skanda.8.100.46)

नित्यं जयतु नो राजा दानवानां सुखावहः । नश्यन्तु विद्विषः सर्वे येस्माकमहितावहाः

nityaṁ jayatu no rājā dānavānāṁ sukhāvahaḥ | naśyantu vidviṣaḥ sarve yesmākamahitāvahāḥ

"May our king, who brings happiness to the Danavas, be ever victorious! May all the enemies who bring us harm perish!"

Verse 47 (skanda.8.100.47)

अहं तवाज्ञया सर्वं विचरामि दिने दिने । सागरान्तं महाराज पुरुषैस्सह संगतः

ahaṁ tavājñayā sarvaṁ vicarāmi dine dine | sāgarāntaṁ mahārāja puruṣaissaha saṁgataḥ

"By your command, O great king, I range every day, together with my men, all the way to the shore of the ocean."

Verse 48 (skanda.8.100.48)

सोद्य पश्याम्यहं तत्र वराहं दैत्यपुङ्गव । मेरुशृङ्गप्रतीकाशं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम्

sodya paśyāmyahaṁ tatra varāhaṁ daityapuṅgava | meruśṛṅgapratīkāśaṁ jvalantamiva pāvakam

"Today, O bull among the Daityas, I saw there a Boar, resembling the peak of Meru, blazing like fire."

Verse 49 (skanda.8.100.49)

तस्य गात्रेषु दृश्यन्ते सूक्ष्मरूपधराः स्थिताः । सर्वे सुरा महाराज ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः

tasya gātreṣu dṛśyante sūkṣmarūpadharāḥ sthitāḥ | sarve surā mahārāja ṛṣayaśca tapodhanāḥ

"Within his limbs, O great king, are seen, dwelling there in subtle form, all the gods and the sages rich in austerity."

Verse 50 (skanda.8.100.50)

महाबलस्त्वं राजेन्द्र देवानां भयदः सदा । त्वत्तोपि सुमहान् भीमस्तादृङ् नैवेह विद्यते

mahābalastvaṁ rājendra devānāṁ bhayadaḥ sadā | tvattopi sumahān bhīmastādṛṅ naiveha vidyate

"You, O lord of kings, are exceedingly mighty, ever a terror to the gods; yet a being so vast and fearsome as this, surpassing even you, has never before existed here."

Verse 51 (skanda.8.100.51)

न दृष्टो न श्रुतो वापि वपुषा दैत्यपुङ्गव । अहं तेनाहतो दृष्ट्या न्यपतं भूतले भृशम्

na dṛṣṭo na śruto vāpi vapuṣā daityapuṅgava | ahaṁ tenāhato dṛṣṭyā nyapataṁ bhūtale bhṛśam

"Never before seen nor heard of in such a form, O bull among the Daityas; struck merely by his gaze, I fell violently to the ground."

Verse 52 (skanda.8.100.52)

स्रस्तहाराम्बरो भीतः कुलिशेनेव ताडितः । ये ममानुचराश्चासन् दानवा भीमविक्रमाः

srastahārāmbaro bhītaḥ kuliśeneva tāḍitaḥ | ye mamānucarāścāsan dānavā bhīmavikramāḥ

My necklace and garments fell loose, terrified as I was, as though struck by a thunderbolt; and those Danavas of fearsome valour who had been my followers -

Verse 53 (skanda.8.100.53)

ते सर्वे तस्य वेगेन पतिता गतजीविताः । स एषोभ्येति राजेन्द्र तवैव नगरं प्रति

te sarve tasya vegena patitā gatajīvitāḥ | sa eṣobhyeti rājendra tavaiva nagaraṁ prati

- all of them fell down lifeless by the force of his onrush. He now approaches, O lord of kings, toward this very city of yours,

Verse 54 (skanda.8.100.54)

चालयन् वसुधां सर्वां क्षोभयन् सागरांस्तथा । जलेचराँश्च दैत्येन्द्र जीवितैर्विप्रयोजयन्

cālayan vasudhāṁ sarvāṁ kṣobhayan sāgarāṁstathā | jalecarā~śca daityendra jīvitairviprayojayan

- shaking the whole earth, and stirring up the oceans besides, and, O lord of the Daityas, depriving the water-dwelling creatures of their lives.

Verse 55 (skanda.8.100.55)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रह्लादोसुरसत्तमः । उवाच दैत्यराजानमिदं वचनमर्थवत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā prahlādosurasattamaḥ | uvāca daityarājānamidaṁ vacanamarthavat

Sanatkumara said: Having heard his words, Prahlada, best of Asuras, spoke this meaningful word to the king of the Daityas:

Verse 56 (skanda.8.100.56)

प्रह्लाद उवाच । यादृशं तद्वराहस्य तस्य रूपं मया श्रुतम् । सर्वदेवमयं राजन् वराहोप्राकृतो मतः

prahlāda uvāca | yādṛśaṁ tadvarāhasya tasya rūpaṁ mayā śrutam | sarvadevamayaṁ rājan varāhoprākṛto mataḥ

Prahlada said: "From what I have heard, O king, of that Boar's form, this Boar, composed of all the gods, is to be deemed no ordinary creature."

Verse 57 (skanda.8.100.57)

तस्मात्त्वया विधातव्यं यथा नो न स मोहयेत् । विनिश्चित्य च दैत्येन्द्र मा चिरं तद्विधीयताम्

tasmāttvayā vidhātavyaṁ yathā no na sa mohayet | viniścitya ca daityendra mā ciraṁ tadvidhīyatām

"Therefore you must act in such a way that he does not deceive us; having resolved firmly, O lord of the Daityas, let there be no delay in that."

Verse 58 (skanda.8.100.58)

सुव्यक्तं ब्रह्मणा तस्य चक्रलाङ्गलधारिणः । सर्वदेवमयं रूपं वाराहमिदमीहितम्

suvyaktaṁ brahmaṇā tasya cakralāṅgaladhāriṇaḥ | sarvadevamayaṁ rūpaṁ vārāhamidamīhitam

"It is quite clear that this boar-form, composed of all the gods, has been devised by Brahma for him, the wielder of the discus and the plough."

Verse 59 (skanda.8.100.59)

भवानवध्यस्सर्वेषां देवानां दानवेश्वर । अशक्तैस्तैरियं माया सृष्टा वै न तदन्यथा

bhavānavadhyassarveṣāṁ devānāṁ dānaveśvara | aśaktaistairiyaṁ māyā sṛṣṭā vai na tadanyathā

"You are unslayable by all the gods, O lord of the Danavas; being powerless against you, they have devised this illusion - it is nothing other than that."

Verse 60 (skanda.8.100.60)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा हिरण्याक्षः प्रतापवान् । उवाच दैत्यान्दनुजानिदं वचनमर्थवत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā hiraṇyākṣaḥ pratāpavān | uvāca daityāndanujānidaṁ vacanamarthavat

Sanatkumara said: Having heard his words, the mighty Hiranyaksha spoke this meaningful word to the Daityas and the Danavas:

Verse 61 (skanda.8.100.61)

हिरण्याक्ष उवाच । यद्येष भ्रातृहन्ता मे इहायाति दुरात्मवान् । पूर्णः स्यादद्य सुचिराद्यो मे हृदि मनोरथः

hiraṇyākṣa uvāca | yadyeṣa bhrātṛhantā me ihāyāti durātmavān | pūrṇaḥ syādadya sucirādyo me hṛdi manorathaḥ

Hiranyaksha said: "If this evil-souled slayer of my brother is indeed coming here, then today, after so long, that desire cherished in my heart shall be fulfilled."

Verse 62 (skanda.8.100.62)

अद्याहं तं दुरात्मानं भ्रातृहन्तारमाहवे । छित्त्वा छित्त्वा करिष्यामि बलिं पशुपतेः शुभम्

adyāhaṁ taṁ durātmānaṁ bhrātṛhantāramāhave | chittvā chittvā kariṣyāmi baliṁ paśupateḥ śubham

"Today, in battle, I shall cut that evil-souled slayer of my brother to pieces again and again, and make of him an auspicious offering to Pashupati."

Verse 63 (skanda.8.100.63)

अद्य तस्य विचित्राक्षं शिरः कायात् सकुण्डलम् । उत्कृत्य दैत्या दास्यामि रुद्राय परमात्मने

adya tasya vicitrākṣaṁ śiraḥ kāyāt sakuṇḍalam | utkṛtya daityā dāsyāmi rudrāya paramātmane

"Today, O Daityas, having cut off his wondrous-eyed, earringed head from his body, I shall offer it to Rudra, the Supreme Self."

Verse 64 (skanda.8.100.64)

मया नासादितः पूर्वं तस्मिन्युद्धे स केशवः । अद्याहं तं समासाद्य नेष्यामि यमसादनम्

mayā nāsāditaḥ pūrvaṁ tasminyuddhe sa keśavaḥ | adyāhaṁ taṁ samāsādya neṣyāmi yamasādanam

"Never before have I met that Keshava in battle; today, having confronted him, I shall send him to the abode of Yama."

Verse 65 (skanda.8.100.65)

अथ तस्मिन्हते सर्वे निराशा भयविह्वलाः । ममैवा कार्यतां गत्वा देवा यास्यन्ति दासताम्

atha tasminhate sarve nirāśā bhayavihvalāḥ | mamaivā kāryatāṁ gatvā devā yāsyanti dāsatām

"And then, once he is slain, all the gods, despairing and overwhelmed with fear, having become subject to my will alone, shall enter into servitude."

Verse 66 (skanda.8.100.66)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततः स दानवाञ्छूरान् दैत्याँश्च सुमहाबलान् । उवाच नाम्ना विख्यातान् किङ्करान्नाम दानवान्

sanatkumāra uvāca | tataḥ sa dānavāñchūrān daityā~śca sumahābalān | uvāca nāmnā vikhyātān kiṅkarānnāma dānavān

Sanatkumara said: Then he spoke to those heroic Danavas and exceedingly mighty Daityas, renowned by the name of Kinkaras:

Verse 67 (skanda.8.100.67)

दश तानि सहस्राणि गच्छध्वं तं महाबलाः । जानीत कोयमित्येवं ततो यास्याम्यहं स्वयम्

daśa tāni sahasrāṇi gacchadhvaṁ taṁ mahābalāḥ | jānīta koyamityevaṁ tato yāsyāmyahaṁ svayam

"Ten thousand of you, O mighty ones, go to him; find out just who he is - after that, I myself shall go."

Verse 68 (skanda.8.100.68)

ते तथोक्ता महामाया हृष्टाः सर्वे विनिर्गताः । बद्धगोधांगुलित्राणाः सन्नद्धास्तु पदातयः

te tathoktā mahāmāyā hṛṣṭāḥ sarve vinirgatāḥ | baddhagodhāṁgulitrāṇāḥ sannaddhāstu padātayaḥ

Thus commanded, those of great magical power, all delighted, marched forth; with their leather finger-guards bound on, those armoured foot-soldiers set out.

Verse 69 (skanda.8.100.69)

ते हेमचित्राम्बरहारसूत्रा महाबला दानवदैत्यपुत्राः । विनादयन्तो बहुधातिकोपिता यथैव नागाः सविषा विनिर्ययुः

te hemacitrāmbarahārasūtrā mahābalā dānavadaityaputrāḥ | vinādayanto bahudhātikopitā yathaiva nāgāḥ saviṣā viniryayuḥ

Those mighty sons of Danavas and Daityas, decked in gold-embroidered garments and strings of pearls, roaring in many ways, exceedingly enraged, marched out like venomous serpents.
