The Battle with the Kinkaras

Verse 1 (skanda.8.101.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तेभिनिर्गत्य वेगेन दंशिता दैत्यदानवाः । वराहं प्रति संजग्मुर्मृगाः सिंहमिवातुराः

sanatkumāra uvāca | tebhinirgatya vegena daṁśitā daityadānavāḥ | varāhaṁ prati saṁjagmurmṛgāḥ siṁhamivāturāḥ

Sanatkumara said: Having marched forth swiftly, those armoured Daityas and Danavas rushed toward the Boar, like frenzied deer rushing toward a lion.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.101.2)

ते वराहदृशा तेन नीयमानासुरेश्वराः । आभान्ति व्यास सन्नद्धाः प्रोक्षिताः पशवो यथा

te varāhadṛśā tena nīyamānāsureśvarāḥ | ābhānti vyāsa sannaddhāḥ prokṣitāḥ paśavo yathā

Those lords of the Asuras, being drawn along by the mere gaze of that Boar, appeared, O Vyasa, like armoured beasts already consecrated for sacrifice.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.101.3)

तान्निहत्य कृतान्तेन मृत्युना चावपाशितान् । निनाय स तदा दैत्यान् पशूनिव यथा नरः

tānnihatya kṛtāntena mṛtyunā cāvapāśitān | nināya sa tadā daityān paśūniva yathā naraḥ

Having struck them down as though with Death itself, and having bound them as with a noose, he led those Daityas along, as a man leads beasts.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.101.4)

गत्वा ते योजनान्यष्टौ उत्तीर्णं सागराम्भसः । वराहं ददृशुः सर्वे सिंहं क्षुद्रमृगा इव

gatvā te yojanānyaṣṭau uttīrṇaṁ sāgarāmbhasaḥ | varāhaṁ dadṛśuḥ sarve siṁhaṁ kṣudramṛgā iva

Having gone eight yojanas, and having crossed the ocean's waters, they all beheld the Boar, like small deer beholding a lion.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.101.5)

ते मुहूर्तं निरीक्ष्यैव परिबभ्रुस्समन्ततः । विस्फारयन्तश्चापानि संक्रुद्धा दैत्यदानवाः

te muhūrtaṁ nirīkṣyaiva paribabhrussamantataḥ | visphārayantaścāpāni saṁkruddhā daityadānavāḥ

Having gazed at him for a moment, those enraged Daityas and Danavas wandered about on every side, twanging their bows.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.101.6)

तानापतत एवाथ निरीक्ष्य स समन्ततः । वराहेन्द्रस्तदा दैत्यान् प्राहेदं सुमहाबलः

tānāpatata evātha nirīkṣya sa samantataḥ | varāhendrastadā daityān prāhedaṁ sumahābalaḥ

Then, seeing them charging at him from every side, that exceedingly mighty lord of boars spoke this to the Daityas:

Verse 7 (skanda.8.101.7)

वराह उवाच । किं मा यूयं दितेः पुत्रा अभिद्रवथ सर्वशः । दूषयामि न वः किञ्चिदसुहृन्न च वो ह्यहम्

varāha uvāca | kiṁ mā yūyaṁ diteḥ putrā abhidravatha sarvaśaḥ | dūṣayāmi na vaḥ kiñcidasuhṛnna ca vo hyaham

The Boar said: "Why, O sons of Diti, do you all charge upon me from every side? I have done you no harm at all, nor am I any enemy of yours."

Verse 8 (skanda.8.101.8)

अथैवंवादिनं दैत्या वराहं तं सुविस्मिताः । पप्रच्छुः परिवार्यैव सर्वे दितिसुतास्तदा

athaivaṁvādinaṁ daityā varāhaṁ taṁ suvismitāḥ | papracchuḥ parivāryaiva sarve ditisutāstadā

Then, greatly astonished at that Boar who spoke thus, all those sons of Diti surrounded him and questioned him:

Verse 9 (skanda.8.101.9)

कस्त्वं वराहरूपीह तीर्त्वा सागरमूर्जिम् । इहागतः किमर्थं वा क्व वा गन्तव्यमित्युत

kastvaṁ varāharūpīha tīrtvā sāgaramūrjim | ihāgataḥ kimarthaṁ vā kva vā gantavyamityuta

"Who are you, in this form of a boar, who has crossed this mighty ocean and come here? For what purpose have you come, and where must you go?"

Verse 10 (skanda.8.101.10)

तेषान्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वराहोसौ महामनाः । उवाच दानवान्सर्वान् तदा जलदनिस्वनः

teṣāntadvacanaṁ śrutvā varāhosau mahāmanāḥ | uvāca dānavānsarvān tadā jaladanisvanaḥ

Having heard their words, that great-minded Boar, whose voice resounded like a raincloud, then spoke to all those Danavas:

Verse 11 (skanda.8.101.11)

वराहोहं यथा दैत्यास्तादृग्रूपं च पश्यत । प्रचारार्थमिमं देशमागतोस्मि न संशयः

varāhohaṁ yathā daityāstādṛgrūpaṁ ca paśyata | pracārārthamimaṁ deśamāgatosmi na saṁśayaḥ

"I am indeed a boar, O Daityas, exactly as you see this form; I have come to this land for the sake of foraging, without doubt."

Verse 12 (skanda.8.101.12)

हृतभार्योहमन्येन विमना दैत्यपुङ्गवाः । पर्यटँस्तस्य दुष्टस्य चिन्तयामि परिग्रहम्

hṛtabhāryohamanyena vimanā daityapuṅgavāḥ | paryaṭa~stasya duṣṭasya cintayāmi parigraham

"O bulls among the Daityas, my mate has been carried off by another; dejected, I wander about, thinking how I might catch that wicked one."

Verse 13 (skanda.8.101.13)

दानवा ऊचुः । नायं प्रचारो युष्माकं दैत्यानामयमालयः । अनादृत्य कथं दैत्यानिमं देशमुपागतः

dānavā ūcuḥ | nāyaṁ pracāro yuṣmākaṁ daityānāmayamālayaḥ | anādṛtya kathaṁ daityānimaṁ deśamupāgataḥ

The Danavas said: "This is no foraging-ground of yours - this is the abode of the Daityas; how have you come to this land, showing no regard for the Daityas?"

Verse 14 (skanda.8.101.14)

वयं त्वाद्य वधिष्यामः सर्वे मृगकुलाधम । हत्वा च त्वां हि नेष्यामः सर्वे दैत्येश्वरं प्रति

vayaṁ tvādya vadhiṣyāmaḥ sarve mṛgakulādhama | hatvā ca tvāṁ hi neṣyāmaḥ sarve daityeśvaraṁ prati

"We shall all slay you today, O vilest of the deer-race; and having slain you, we shall all bring you before the lord of the Daityas."

Verse 15 (skanda.8.101.15)

ततस्ते दानवास्सर्वे तमायुधवरैर्भृशम् । निजघ्नुः पर्वतं यद्वत् मेघा वृष्ट्या समुद्धताः

tataste dānavāssarve tamāyudhavarairbhṛśam | nijaghnuḥ parvataṁ yadvat meghā vṛṣṭyā samuddhatāḥ

Then all those Danavas struck at him violently with their finest weapons, as swollen clouds strike a mountain with their downpour.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.101.16)

बलवान्सोपि देवात्मा वराहः सुमहाबलः । वध्यमानोपि तान्दैत्यानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्

balavānsopi devātmā varāhaḥ sumahābalaḥ | vadhyamānopi tāndaityānidaṁ vacanamabravīt

That powerful, exceedingly mighty Boar, whose soul was of the gods, even while being struck, spoke this word to those Daityas:

Verse 17 (skanda.8.101.17)

नह्यत्र भवतां किञ्चिदल्पमप्यसुरोत्तमाः । अपराधं चकाराहं न करिष्ये करोमि वा

nahyatra bhavatāṁ kiñcidalpamapyasurottamāḥ | aparādhaṁ cakārāhaṁ na kariṣye karomi vā

"O best of Asuras, I have done you no wrong here, not even the slightest; I neither shall do so, nor am I doing so now."

Verse 18 (skanda.8.101.18)

किमर्थं मा शितैः शस्त्रैर्घ्नत सर्वे यथा परम् । न हि वो वैरमस्तीह न च कार्यं मया हि वः

kimarthaṁ mā śitaiḥ śastrairghnata sarve yathā param | na hi vo vairamastīha na ca kāryaṁ mayā hi vaḥ

"Why do you all strike me with sharpened weapons as though I were an enemy? Neither have you any feud with me here, nor any business with me."

Verse 19 (skanda.8.101.19)

अथ मांसेन कृत्यं वस्ततो मां घ्नत दानवाः । यथा प्राणं शितैः शस्त्रैर्युष्मत्तो न च मे भयम्

atha māṁsena kṛtyaṁ vastato māṁ ghnata dānavāḥ | yathā prāṇaṁ śitaiḥ śastrairyuṣmatto na ca me bhayam

"If, however, you have need of my flesh, then strike me, O Danavas, unto my very life, with your sharpened weapons - I have no fear from you."

Verse 20 (skanda.8.101.20)

एतौ करौ प्रसार्याहं संस्थितो दितिनन्दनाः । यदा भवन्तः स्थास्यन्ति तदा हन्तास्मि वस्सकृत्

etau karau prasāryāhaṁ saṁsthito ditinandanāḥ | yadā bhavantaḥ sthāsyanti tadā hantāsmi vassakṛt

"O sons of Diti, I stand here with these two hands outstretched; when you all stand still at last, then I shall slay you all at once."

Verse 21 (skanda.8.101.21)

अद्य वेत्स्यथ दैतेया मृगाणामिह यद्बलम् । मत्ता यूयं सुरान् जित्वा तं मदं नाशयामि वः

adya vetsyatha daiteyā mṛgāṇāmiha yadbalam | mattā yūyaṁ surān jitvā taṁ madaṁ nāśayāmi vaḥ

"Today, O sons of Diti, you shall learn what strength a deer can hold; that pride of yours, intoxicated as you are from conquering the gods, I shall now destroy."

Verse 22 (skanda.8.101.22)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततः स भगवान् व्यास शक्रध्वजनिभौ करौ । प्रसार्य तस्थावुद्यंचौ भगवानिव शंकरः

sanatkumāra uvāca | tataḥ sa bhagavān vyāsa śakradhvajanibhau karau | prasārya tasthāvudyaṁcau bhagavāniva śaṁkaraḥ

Sanatkumara said: Then, O Vyasa, that blessed one, having stretched out his two arms, like the shaft of Indra's banner, stood there with them raised, like the blessed Shankara himself.

Verse 23 (skanda.8.101.23)

तेपि तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दानवाः क्रोधमूर्छिताः । निजघ्नुर्भृशमायस्ता नानाशस्त्रास्त्रपाणयः

tepi tadvacanaṁ śrutvā dānavāḥ krodhamūrchitāḥ | nijaghnurbhṛśamāyastā nānāśastrāstrapāṇayaḥ

Yet, having heard those words, the Danavas, overcome with fury, weapons and missiles of every kind in hand, struck at him violently and with all their strength -

Verse 24 (skanda.8.101.24)

मेघैरिव महावायुर्गरुत्मान् भुजगैरिव । मृगैरिव यथा व्याघ्रः शशैरिव यथा हरिः

meghairiva mahāvāyurgarutmān bhujagairiva | mṛgairiva yathā vyāghraḥ śaśairiva yathā hariḥ

- as the great wind is beset by clouds, as Garutmat by serpents, as a tiger by deer, as a lion by hares -

Verse 25 (skanda.8.101.25)

हविषेवानलो दीप्तो गजो गोमायुभिर्यथा । तथा स भगवान् व्यास वराहो नन्दिवर्द्धनः

haviṣevānalo dīpto gajo gomāyubhiryathā | tathā sa bhagavān vyāsa varāho nandivarddhanaḥ

- as a blazing fire is fed with oblations, or an elephant beset by jackals - even so, O Vyasa, was that blessed Boar, Nandivardhana, then surrounded.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.101.26)

तैरर्द्यमानोगणयन् तस्थावचलसन्निभः । स यदा तैः शरैश्चैव गदामुशलपट्टिशैः

tairardyamānogaṇayan tasthāvacalasannibhaḥ | sa yadā taiḥ śaraiścaiva gadāmuśalapaṭṭiśaiḥ

Assailed by them, yet paying them no heed, he stood as firm as a mountain; and when, with their arrows, and with maces, clubs, and pattishas -

Verse 27 (skanda.8.101.27)

भिन्दिपालैर्भुशुण्डीभिः करवालैरयोमुखैः । एतैश्चान्यैश्च बहुभिर्वध्यमानो मृगेश्वरः । अदृश्यो विबभौ सर्वे तदा ते हर्षिता भृशम्

bhindipālairbhuśuṇḍībhiḥ karavālairayomukhaiḥ | etaiścānyaiśca bahubhirvadhyamāno mṛgeśvaraḥ | adṛśyo vibabhau sarve tadā te harṣitā bhṛśam

- with javelins, with bhushundis, with iron-tipped swords, and with these and many other weapons, that lord of beasts was struck until he seemed to vanish entirely from sight - and then they all rejoiced greatly.

Verse 28 (skanda.8.101.28)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तेषां निनदतां व्यास वराहो नन्दिवर्धनः । शस्त्रकूटाद विनिष्क्रम्य शिरांसि समपोथयत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | teṣāṁ ninadatāṁ vyāsa varāho nandivardhanaḥ | śastrakūṭāda viniṣkramya śirāṁsi samapothayat

Sanatkumara said: While they were thus shouting, O Vyasa, Nandivardhana the Boar burst forth from that heap of weapons and crushed their heads.

Verse 29 (skanda.8.101.29)

कराभ्यां चरणाभ्याञ्च दंष्ट्राभिश्च व्यदारयत् । तन्मुक्तैरायुधैश्चैव चिच्छेदान्यान् ररास च

karābhyāṁ caraṇābhyāñca daṁṣṭrābhiśca vyadārayat | tanmuktairāyudhaiścaiva cicchedānyān rarāsa ca

With his two hands, his feet, and his tusks, he tore them apart; and with the very weapons they had let fall, he cut down others, and roared.

Verse 30 (skanda.8.101.30)

ते सर्वे करचरणैर्विमुक्तशस्त्रैर्दंष्ट्राभिर्मखमुखदारितास्तथैव । संक्षीणा बहुभिरिवोपभुज्यमाना द्रव्याणामिव निचयाः सदा महान्तः

te sarve karacaraṇairvimuktaśastrairdaṁṣṭrābhirmakhamukhadāritāstathaiva | saṁkṣīṇā bahubhirivopabhujyamānā dravyāṇāmiva nicayāḥ sadā mahāntaḥ

All of them were torn apart alike by his hands and feet, by the very weapons wrested from them, and by his tusks - dwindling away, like great and ever-abundant stores of goods being consumed by many hands.
