sanatkumāra uvāca | te'tha dṛṣṭvā mahādevaṁ saptalokaikabāndhavam | ūcuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve jānubhyāṁ śirasā natāḥ
Sanatkumara said: Then, having seen the great god, the sole kinsman of the seven worlds, all the gods spoke with joined palms, bowing with knees and head.
Verse 2 (skanda.8.121.2)
bhagava~llokakāmena hariṇā devasattama | kṛtaḥ pratigrahaḥ pūrvaṁ yena pāpmā tamarcchata
O Lord, best of gods, out of desire for the world's welfare Hari earlier accepted a sacrificial gift, and because of that, Sin has come upon him.
Verse 3 (skanda.8.121.3)

Therefore, O Lord of the world, we beseech you: grant welfare to this devoted and prostrate one, O Lord of the gods.
Verse 4 (skanda.8.121.4)

Let this sacrifice be completed, let Hari be freed from sin, and let all the gods together with Vasava regain their own strength.

teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā bhagavān hṛṣitānanaḥ | samāpya yajñaṁ śūlena giriṁ taṁ samavārayat
Hearing their words, the Blessed Lord, his face delighted, completed the sacrifice and held back that mountain with his trident.
Verse 6 (skanda.8.121.6)
tasmād bhedāttato hyāpaḥ sudhāśaṁkhendupāṇḍarāḥ | niḥsṛtāstatra te viṣṇuṁ snapayāñcakrire tadā
From that cleft there flowed forth waters white as nectar, conch, and moon, and with them they then bathed Vishnu.
Verse 7 (skanda.8.121.7)
tasyātha snātamātrasya śarīrādabhiniḥsṛtā | pāpmāsurī mahāghorā vikṛtā vikṛtānanā
Then, from the body of him who had just bathed, there emerged a most terrible demoness called Papma (Sin), deformed and with a deformed face.
Verse 8 (skanda.8.121.8)
devānabhidrutā hantuṁ niruddhā devabandhunā | uvāca tāṁ na hantavyā devāḥ sarve savāsavāḥ
She rushed upon the gods to slay them, but was restrained by the Kinsman of the gods. [A portion of the original text is lost here.] He said that she should not be killed by all the gods together with Vasava.
Verse 9 (skanda.8.121.9)
ihaiva ca tava sthānaṁ bhaviṣyati supūjitam | puṇyā ca sarvatīrthebhyaḥ sarvapātakanāśanī

sapta pūrvān parāṁścaiva tārayiṣyasi nityaśaḥ | saṁdhyeti jagati khyātā sarvatīrthavarā śubhā

devasyāyatanaṁ kṛtvā jagmustridivameva ca | gateṣu devasaṁgheṣu śivakūṭe tadā hariḥ
having built a shrine for the god, went to heaven. When the hosts of gods had departed, Hari then, at Shivakuta,
Verse 14 (skanda.8.121.14)

performed an ashvamedha sacrifice and remained worshipping the god. Then, after six thousand and six years and six months had passed in this practice, the bull-bannered Lord of gods became pleased.
Verse 15 (skanda.8.121.15)
somaḥ sanandiḥ sagaṇa idaṁ provāca taṁ punaḥ | hṛṣyamāṇaḥ sutuṣṭātmā brūhi kiṁ pradadāni te
Together with Uma, with Nandi, and with his hosts, he, delighted and well satisfied, spoke to him again: 'Tell me, what shall I give you?'
Verse 16 (skanda.8.121.16)
viṣṇuruvāca | bhagavan pāpmanā vāpi tapasā vāpi lokapa | lopo na me yathā syādvai tanmamācakṣva kālahan

tasya devaḥ svayaṁ śūlī tuṣṭaḥ prekṣya tathāvidham | śarīrārdhaṁ dadau tasmai tadabhūdviṣṇuśaṅkaram
The trident-bearing god himself, seeing him thus disciplined, was pleased and gave him half of his own body; that became the form of Vishnu-Shankara (Harihara).
Verse 21 (skanda.8.121.21)
ya imaṁ śṛṇuyānmarttyaḥ sadā parvasu parvasu | arcayecchivaviṣṇuṁ ca sa gacchet paramāṁ gatim

These and many other Danavas, proud of their strength, armored and greatly enraged, then challenged the gods to battle.
Verse 27 (skanda.8.121.27)

'If the sons of Simhika have thus been slain by you all at once, then that mighty deed of yours is like Tryambaka's destruction of Tripura. There is none your equal in the world; this I speak truly.'
Verse 59 (skanda.8.121.59)
ete na tulyā devena mānuṣeṇa na kenacit | avadhyāḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ tvayaikena niṣūditāḥ
'These were matched by no god and no man; unslayable by any being, yet destroyed by you alone.'
Verse 60 (skanda.8.121.60)
tasmāttava vayaṁ tuṣṭāḥ prayacchāmo hyavadhyatām | akṣayaṁ ca balaṁ yuddhe yaśañca paramaṁ bhuvi
'Therefore, pleased with you, we grant you invulnerability, inexhaustible strength in battle, and supreme fame on earth.'
Verse 61 (skanda.8.121.61)
tryambakaśca varairdivyairiṣṭaistvāṁ pratipatsyate | yathākāmañca yuddheṣu samūhaṁ tvaṁ vijeṣyasi
'And Tryambaka too shall favor you with cherished divine boons, and at will you shall conquer whole hosts in battles.'
Verse 62 (skanda.8.121.62)
sanatkumāra uvāca | sa evamuktastairvyāsa devaistuṣṭairmahātapāḥ | jagāma tryambakaṁ devaṁ hṛṣṭatuṣṭamanā yatiḥ
Sanatkumara said: O Vyasa, thus addressed by those pleased gods, that great ascetic went, glad and content in heart, to the god Tryambaka.
Verse 63 (skanda.8.121.63)
devā api susaṁyattāstārakaṁ yuddhadurmadam | avākiranta vegena mayena sahitaṁ tadā
The gods too, well-prepared, then swiftly surrounded Taraka, maddened with battle, together with Maya.
Verse 64 (skanda.8.121.64)
te daityavegapratiruddhavegā mahābalāḥ sindhusamānavegāḥ | jaghnurbhṛśaṁ daityagaṇānnipatya siṁhā yathāraṇyacarā mataṅgān
Those mighty gods, whose onrush had been checked by the Daityas' force yet whose speed matched the ocean, fell upon the hosts of Daityas and slew them violently, as forest-roaming lions fall upon elephants.
