Ambika Khanda · Chapter 122
Description of Harishchandra Mountain
Verse 1 (skanda.8.122.1)
sanatkumāra uvāca | saihikeyavadhaṁ dṛṣṭvā surāṇāṁ ca jayaṁ tathā | sahasā daityasainyāni prabhagnāni samantataḥ
Sanatkumara said: Seeing the slaughter of the Saimhikeyas and thereby the gods' victory, the Daitya armies suddenly broke apart on every side.
Verse 2 (skanda.8.122.2)
anyena pracyutastāro mayo vīro virocanaḥ
[The first line of this verse is lost in the source.] ...struck down by another, Taraka; the hero Maya, and Virochana...
Verse 3 (skanda.8.122.3)
vipracittiśca ṣaṇḍaśca prahlādaśca mahāsuraḥ | kālanemistataḥ kruddhaḥ keśavaṁ prati saṁyuge
Viprachitti, Shanda, and the great Asura Prahlada — then the enraged Kalanemi advanced toward Keshava in battle.
Verse 4 (skanda.8.122.4)
sarathaṁ mahadāsthāya śatanalvordhvaketumat | abhidudrāva vegena keśavaṁ prati dānavaḥ
Mounting a great chariot a hundred rods long, with an upraised banner, the Danava rushed with speed toward Keshava.
Verse 5 (skanda.8.122.5)
tasyāpatata evātha cakramapratighaṁ mahat | sasarja keśavo vyāsa sa tad vyaṣṭambhayattadā
As he was charging, O Vyasa, Keshava then hurled his great, irresistible discus, but he checked it.
Verse 6 (skanda.8.122.6)
tad viṣṭabdhaṁ tadālakṣya sarve devāḥ pramanyavaḥ | parājitā babhūvurhi viśastrāḥ kālaneminā
Seeing that discus held in check, all the gods grew enraged; yet, deprived of weapons, they were defeated by Kalanemi.
Verse 7 (skanda.8.122.7)
sa tānvidrāvya daityendro vimukhān pracakāra ha
[The first line of this verse is lost.] Having routed them, the lord of the Daityas turned them back.
Verse 8 (skanda.8.122.8)
kṛtvā cakāra ca tadā lokapālatvamavyayaḥ | bhuvaṁ dyāñca tadā vyāpya vartamāno mahābalaḥ
Having done so, the imperishable one assumed the office of a world-guardian, and that mighty one, pervading both earth and heaven, remained so established.
Verse 9 (skanda.8.122.9)
svayambhūriva lokā~strīnacarallokamāyayā
Like the Self-existent Brahma, he moved through the three worlds by his magic power.
Verse 10 (skanda.8.122.10)
sanatkumāra uvāca | taṁ tathāvasthitaṁ dṛṣṭvā daityaṁ devāḥ savāsavāḥ | bhayatrastāstadā jagmuḥ śaraṇaṁ harimavyayam
Sanatkumara said: Seeing that Daitya thus established, the gods together with Vasava, terrified with fear, went for refuge to the imperishable Hari.
Verse 11 (skanda.8.122.11)
śaraṇyaḥ sa ca deveśo haristrailokyabāndhavaḥ | teṣāṁ prādād bhayatrāṇaṁ dānavasya vadhepsayā
That refuge-giving Lord of gods, Hari, kinsman of the triple world, granted them protection from fear, intending to slay the Danava.
Verse 12 (skanda.8.122.12)
sa tadā dyāṁ bhuvañcaiva vyāpya rūpeṇa sarvaśaḥ | cakraṁ tadabjaṁ sasmāra yattad rudreṇa nirmitam
He then, pervading both heaven and earth wholly with his form, called to mind that lotus-marked discus which had been fashioned by Rudra.
Verse 13 (skanda.8.122.13)
tatastena tadā vyāsa dānavasya śiro mahat | jahāra pakvaṁ tālāgrāt phalaṁ vāyurivoddhataḥ
Then with it, O Vyasa, he swept off the Danava's great head, as a fierce wind sweeps a ripe fruit from the top of a palm tree.
Verse 14 (skanda.8.122.14)
tasmin vinihate daitye tārakaśca mayaśca ha | vinivṛttau mahāyodhau pātālaṁ prativegitau
When that Daitya was slain, Taraka and Maya, those two great warriors, turned back and rushed swiftly toward Patala.
Verse 15 (skanda.8.122.15)
sanatkumāra uvāca | evaṁ vyāsābhavadyuddhamugraṁ tattārakāmayam | kālanemirhato yatra viśrutaśca virocanaḥ
Sanatkumara said: Thus, O Vyasa, occurred that fierce battle concerning Taraka and Maya, in which Kalanemi was slain and Virochana became renowned.
Verse 16 (skanda.8.122.16)
saiṁhikeyāśca vikrāntāstuhuṇḍaśca mahāsuraḥ | surocanaḥ śatāvarto hālo gārgyaśirāstathā
There too were the valorous Saimhikeyas, the great Asura Tuhunda, Surochana, Shatavarta, Hala, and Gargyashiras.
Verse 17 (skanda.8.122.17)
vipākaḥ saha pākena caṇḍaḥ kārtasvanaḥ kubhaḥ | ete cānye ca daityendrā nihatāstārakāmaye | dhvaje punarhataḥ krūro vipracittiḥ sahānujaḥ
Vipaka with Paka, Chanda, Kartasvana, Kubha — these and other lords of the Daityas were slain in the Taraka-Maya battle; and in the Banner (Dhvaja) battle the cruel Viprachitti was slain again, together with his younger brother.
Verse 18 (skanda.8.122.18)
vyāsa uvāca | kathaṁ tadabhavadyuddhaṁ devānāmasuraiḥ saha | kathañca dhvaja ityevaṁ tasya nāma babhūva ha
Vyasa said: How did that battle of the gods with the Asuras occur, and how did it come to be named 'Dhvaja' (the Banner)?
Verse 19 (skanda.8.122.19)
jāmadagnyaśca tatkarma kṛtvā bhṛgukulodvahaḥ | duṣkaraṁ sarvabhūtānāmāgatastryambakāntikam | kimukto devadevena etadicchāmi veditum
And Jamadagnya, upholder of the Bhrigu clan, having performed that deed impossible for all beings, came to Tryambaka's presence — what did the God of gods say to him? This I wish to know.
Verse 20 (skanda.8.122.20)
sanatkumāra uvāca | jamadagnestadā sūnuramaraiḥ preṣitaḥ svayam | jagāma guhyaṁ devasya puriścandraṁ niveśanam
Sanatkumara said: Then the son of Jamadagni, sent forth by the immortals themselves, went to the god's secret abode, Purishchandra.
Verse 21 (skanda.8.122.21)
vyāsa uvāca | kathaṁ tadabhavaddivyaṁ puriścandraṁ niveśanam | sthānaṁ guhyaṁ maheśasya kathayasva dṛḍhavrata
Vyasa said: How did that divine abode Purishchandra, Mahesha's secret place, come into being? Tell me, O steadfast one.
Verse 22 (skanda.8.122.22)
sanatkumāra uvāca | atra te saṁpravakṣyāmi purāvṛttaṁ mahāmate | yacchrutvā pāpakarmāpi gaccheta paramāṁ gatim
Sanatkumara said: Here I shall relate to you the ancient event, O great-minded one, on hearing which even one of sinful deeds attains the supreme state.
Verse 23 (skanda.8.122.23)
purābhūtāṁ mahātmānau naranārāyaṇāvṛṣī | tābhyāṁ kāryeṇa devānāṁ brahmavadhyā kṛtā kila
Long ago there were two great-souled sages, Nara and Narayana; through them, for the sake of the gods' purpose, the sin of brahmin-slaying was indeed incurred.
Verse 24 (skanda.8.122.24)
tayābhibhūtau tau devau pāpmayātimahābalau | abhūtānnaṣṭasaṁjñau tau tiryagyonigatau bhṛśam
Overcome by that sin, those two very mighty gods lost their consciousness and fell utterly into animal births.
Verse 25 (skanda.8.122.25)
atha saṁvatsare divye samatītemitātmavān | āgād brahmā svayaṁ tatra daivatairṛṣibhiḥ saha
Then, when one divine year had passed, the self-composed Brahma himself came there together with the gods and sages.
Verse 26 (skanda.8.122.26)
That lord of gods tried to rouse him, together with Nara, but even so the two, their understanding utterly veiled by their deed, did not awaken.
Verse 27 (skanda.8.122.27)
tān brahmā sa tadā prāha sarvāneva divaukasaḥ | yūyaṁ nārāyaṇasyārthe caradhvaṁ dharmamuttamam
Then Brahma said to all those gods: 'For the sake of Narayana, practice the highest dharma.'
Verse 28 (skanda.8.122.28)
tato vimokṣyate devaḥ sanaro brahmavadhyayā | tamevaṁvādinaṁ devāḥ praṇamya śirasā tadā | ūcuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve kintapaḥ karma śādhi naḥ
'Then that god, together with Nara, shall be freed from the sin of brahmin-slaying.' Bowing their heads to him who spoke thus, all the gods said with joined palms: 'Instruct us what austerity, what act to perform.'
Verse 29 (skanda.8.122.29)
brahmovāca | japadhvaṁ prayatāḥ sarve vāyubhakṣā jitendriyāḥ | rudrāṇāṁ hṛdayaṁ samyak tato yogamavāpsyatha
Brahma said: 'All of you, self-restrained, living on air, senses conquered, recite well the Rudra-hridaya; then you shall attain yoga.'
Verse 30 (skanda.8.122.30)
sanatkumāra uvāca | ta evamastviti procya jajapuḥ salileśayāḥ | ṛṣibhissaha deveśā varṣāyutaśatāni ṣaṭ
Sanatkumara said: Saying 'so be it', those lords of gods, lying in the waters together with the sages, recited the mantra for six hundred thousand years.
Verse 31 (skanda.8.122.31)
atha kālena mahatā teṣāṁ yuktātmanāṁ tadā | yogaḥ prādurabhūt sūkṣmo yatognirabhavacchubhaḥ
Then, after a great time, for those of composed mind, a subtle yoga arose, from which an auspicious fire was born.
Verse 32 (skanda.8.122.32)
tenāgninā brahmavadhyā naranārāyaṇau tadā | sā dagdhā saṁparityajya udakaṁ praviveśa ha
By that fire, the sin of brahmin-slaying clinging to Nara and Narayana was then burnt; abandoning them, it entered the water.
Verse 33 (skanda.8.122.33)
nāstayāpaḥ samāviṣṭā rasavatyo na jajñire | agandhāśca vivarṇāśca prabhāvatyo na caiva ha | pṛthivī cālpavīryābhūttejastigmaṁ ca nābhavat
The waters, pervaded by it, lost their taste; they became scentless, colorless, and stripped of their potency; and the earth grew weak in strength, and fire lost its sharpness.
Verse 34 (skanda.8.122.34)
sanatkumāra uvāca | tataste tantathā dṛṣṭvā yuyujurbhūya eva ca | hṛdayaṁ jajapuścaiva rudrāṇāṁ yuktamānasāḥ
Sanatkumara said: Seeing this, they again disciplined themselves and, with minds composed, recited the Rudra-hridaya once more.
Verse 35 (skanda.8.122.35)
athāgād bhagavāndevaḥ śūlapāṇirvṛṣadhvajaḥ | uvāca devān tuṣṭosmi brūta yadvobhikāṁkṣitam
Then the blessed god, trident in hand, bull-bannered, came and said to the gods: 'I am pleased; tell me what you desire.'
Verse 36 (skanda.8.122.36)
sanatkumāra uvāca | tatastā devatāḥ samyag rudraṁ dṛṣṭvābhiremire | tuṣṭuvuścānatā bhūtvā yajñajīmūtavāhanam
Sanatkumara said: Then those gods, having beheld Rudra fully, rejoiced, and bowing low, praised him who rides the cloud of sacrifice.
Verse 37 (skanda.8.122.37)
