The Great Glory of Nandikeshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.8.25.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। ततस्तत्रागतान्देवो देवताधिपतिर्भवः । मरुतः प्राह संपूज्य कन्यार्थं सदसत्पतिः

sanatkumāra uvāca| tatastatrāgatāndevo devatādhipatirbhavaḥ | marutaḥ prāha saṁpūjya kanyārthaṁ sadasatpatiḥ

Sanatkumara said: Then Bhava, the god, the lord of the gods, the good lord of the assembly, having honoured the Maruts who had come there, spoke to them concerning the bride —

Verse 2 (skanda.8.25.2)

मरुतो ये महावेगा महासत्वा महौजसः । आमन्त्र्य नाम्ना तानीशः सशक्रः सपितामहः

maruto ye mahāvegā mahāsatvā mahaujasaḥ | āmantrya nāmnā tānīśaḥ saśakraḥ sapitāmahaḥ

The Lord, together with Shakra and the Grandsire, addressed by name those Maruts who were of great speed, great might, and great vigour —

Verse 3 (skanda.8.25.3)

युष्माकं सुयशां कन्यां सत्सां दिव्यरूपिणीम् । दातुमर्हथ संपूज्य स्नुषा सा नौ भविष्यति

yuṣmākaṁ suyaśāṁ kanyāṁ satsāṁ divyarūpiṇīm | dātumarhatha saṁpūjya snuṣā sā nau bhaviṣyati

'You should, with due honour, give your daughter Suyasha, of divine form and virtue; she shall become our daughter-in-law.'

Verse 4 (skanda.8.25.4)

मरुत ऊचुः। त्वमस्माकं च तस्याश्च सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा । प्रभविष्णुस्त्रिलोकेश न नो याचितुमर्हसि

maruta ūcuḥ| tvamasmākaṁ ca tasyāśca sarvasya jagatastathā | prabhaviṣṇustrilokeśa na no yācitumarhasi

The Maruts said: 'You are the lord of us, and of her, and indeed of the entire universe, O lord of the three worlds; it is not fitting for you to ask us.'

Verse 5 (skanda.8.25.5)

त्वयैव देया ग्राह्या च त्वन्नो गतिरनुत्तमा । मा नः परानिवेशान याचनेन विभावय

tvayaiva deyā grāhyā ca tvanno gatiranuttamā | mā naḥ parāniveśāna yācanena vibhāvaya

'By you alone should she be given and received; you are our supreme refuge. Do not, by asking, treat us as if we were separate from you.'

Verse 6 (skanda.8.25.6)

पिता नः कश्यपः श्रीमान् मरीचिश्च पितामहः । पितामहपिता ब्रह्मा तस्यापि त्वं पिता महान् स त्वं पितामहोस्माकं न परान् कर्त्तुमर्हसि

pitā naḥ kaśyapaḥ śrīmān marīciśca pitāmahaḥ | pitāmahapitā brahmā tasyāpi tvaṁ pitā mahān sa tvaṁ pitāmahosmākaṁ na parān karttumarhasi

'Our father is the glorious Kashyapa, and Marichi our grandfather; the father of that grandfather is Brahma, and you are the great father even of him. You, then, are our supreme grandfather; it is not fitting for you to treat us as strangers.'

Verse 7 (skanda.8.25.7)

ईश्वर उवाच। अस्माकं न परा यूयं सत्यं वः परिभाषितम् । किन्तु लोकहितार्थाय मुनिदेवैः प्रभाषितम् अदत्ता न गृहीतव्या कन्या धर्मः सनातनः

īśvara uvāca| asmākaṁ na parā yūyaṁ satyaṁ vaḥ paribhāṣitam | kintu lokahitārthāya munidevaiḥ prabhāṣitam adattā na gṛhītavyā kanyā dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ

Ishvara said: 'You are indeed not strangers to us; what you have said is true. But for the welfare of the world, it has been declared by sages and gods that an ungiven daughter should not be taken — this is the eternal law.'

Verse 8 (skanda.8.25.8)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। स एवमुक्तो देवेशो मरुद्भिर्देवसत्तमैः । सुयशां मरुतां कन्यामानयामास तत्क्षणात्

sanatkumāra uvāca| sa evamukto deveśo marudbhirdevasattamaiḥ | suyaśāṁ marutāṁ kanyāmānayāmāsa tatkṣaṇāt

Sanatkumara said: That lord of gods, thus addressed by the Maruts, best of the gods, then brought forth Suyasha, the daughter of the Maruts, at that very moment.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.25.9)

स्वयं होतास्य तत्रासीद् ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः । कश्यपश्च तथोद्गाता अत्रिः साम स्वयं जगौ

svayaṁ hotāsya tatrāsīd brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | kaśyapaśca tathodgātā atriḥ sāma svayaṁ jagau

There Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, was himself the officiating priest; and Kashyapa likewise was the chanter, and Atri himself sang the Sama.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.25.10)

अथर्वाङ्गिरसौ देवौ ब्रह्मत्वमपि चक्रतुः । नारदः पर्वतश्चैव चित्रसेनश्च गायनः

atharvāṅgirasau devau brahmatvamapi cakratuḥ | nāradaḥ parvataścaiva citrasenaśca gāyanaḥ

The two gods Atharvan and Angiras performed the office of the brahman-priest as well; and Narada and Parvata, and the singer Chitrasena —

Verse 11 (skanda.8.25.11)

विश्वावसुरुचिश्चैव हाहा हूहूस्तथैव च । तथा शालिशिरा यश्च विश्रुतो गण्डमण्डकः

viśvāvasuruciścaiva hāhā hūhūstathaiva ca | tathā śāliśirā yaśca viśruto gaṇḍamaṇḍakaḥ

— Vishvavasu and Ruchi, and likewise Haha and Huhu; and also Shalishira, and the renowned Gandamandaka —

Verse 12 (skanda.8.25.12)

ईतिश्चैवेन्द्रवाहश्च यज्ञवाहोथ दक्षिणः । एते चान्ये च गन्धर्वा जगुर्मधुरकण्ठिनः

ītiścaivendravāhaśca yajñavāhotha dakṣiṇaḥ | ete cānye ca gandharvā jagurmadhurakaṇṭhinaḥ

— Iti, and Indravaha, and Yajnavaha, and Dakshina — these and other sweet-voiced gandharvas sang.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.25.13)

उर्वशी चैव रम्भा च घृताची पूर्वचित्त्यपि । तिलोत्तमा च विश्वाची अन्याश्चाप्सरसस्तथा

urvaśī caiva rambhā ca ghṛtācī pūrvacittyapi | tilottamā ca viśvācī anyāścāpsarasastathā

Urvashi, and Rambha, and Ghritachi, and Purvachitti too; Tilottama, Vishvachi, and other apsarases as well —

Verse 14 (skanda.8.25.14)

अनृत्यन्त महाभागा नृत्तं सुरमनोहरम्

anṛtyanta mahābhāgā nṛttaṁ suramanoharam

— those illustrious ones danced a dance charming to the gods. (The remainder of this verse is lost in the manuscript.)

Verse 15 (skanda.8.25.15)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। स एवमभवद् व्यास विवाहस्तस्य धीमतः । नन्दिनो गणमुख्यस्य अनौपम्यो ह्यनिन्दितः

sanatkumāra uvāca| sa evamabhavad vyāsa vivāhastasya dhīmataḥ | nandino gaṇamukhyasya anaupamyo hyaninditaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Thus, O Vyasa, was the marriage of that wise Nandi, chief of the ganas — a marriage beyond compare, blameless. (One verse preceding this is entirely lost in the manuscript.)

Verse 16 (skanda.8.25.16)

ततः स तु कृतोद्वाहो नन्दी गत्वा महामनाः । पादौ ववन्दे देवस्य देव्या ब्रह्मण एव च शिलादस्य च लोकेशः श्रिया परममया युतः

tataḥ sa tu kṛtodvāho nandī gatvā mahāmanāḥ | pādau vavande devasya devyā brahmaṇa eva ca śilādasya ca lokeśaḥ śriyā paramamayā yutaḥ

Then that great-minded Nandi, having thus been married, went and bowed at the feet of the god, of the Goddess, and of Brahma; and, endowed with the highest splendour, that lord of the world bowed also to Shilada.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.25.17)

देवदेव उवाच। वरं वृणीष्व पुत्र त्वं स्नुषा चेयं तव प्रिया । वरान् ददामि ते वत्स मनसा यानभीप्ससे

devadeva uvāca| varaṁ vṛṇīṣva putra tvaṁ snuṣā ceyaṁ tava priyā | varān dadāmi te vatsa manasā yānabhīpsase

The God of gods said: 'Choose a boon, my son; and this dear one is your bride. I grant you, my child, whatever boons your heart desires.'

Verse 18 (skanda.8.25.18)

नन्द्युवाच। भगवन् यदि तुष्टोसि त्वयि भक्तिर्दृढास्तु मे । सदा च तुष्टो भव मे साम्बः सहगणेश्वरः

nandyuvāca| bhagavan yadi tuṣṭosi tvayi bhaktirdṛḍhāstu me | sadā ca tuṣṭo bhava me sāmbaḥ sahagaṇeśvaraḥ

Nandi said: 'O Blessed One, if you are pleased, let my devotion to you be ever firm; and be always pleased with me, together with Ambika and the lords of the ganas.'

Verse 19 (skanda.8.25.19)

पितरञ्चैव मे देव उत्पादकमिमं प्रभो । अनुग्रहेण युक्तेन योक्तुमर्हसि कामद

pitarañcaiva me deva utpādakamimaṁ prabho | anugraheṇa yuktena yoktumarhasi kāmada

'And, O god, O lord, O fulfiller of desires, join my father here, my begetter, with your fitting grace.'

Verse 20 (skanda.8.25.20)

देवदेव उवाच। सदाहं तव नन्दीश सुतुष्टः सगणेश्वरः । पार्वत्या सहितो धीमन्निदञ्च शृणु मे वचः

devadeva uvāca| sadāhaṁ tava nandīśa sutuṣṭaḥ sagaṇeśvaraḥ | pārvatyā sahito dhīmannidañca śṛṇu me vacaḥ

The God of gods said: 'O lord Nandi, I am always well pleased with you, together with the lords of the ganas and with Parvati. O wise one, hear now this word of mine.'

Verse 21 (skanda.8.25.21)

सदेष्टश्च वरिष्टश्च परमैश्वर्यसंयुतः । महायोगी महेष्वासो महाबलपराक्रमः

sadeṣṭaśca variṣṭaśca paramaiśvaryasaṁyutaḥ | mahāyogī maheṣvāso mahābalaparākramaḥ

'May you always be beloved and excellent, endowed with supreme sovereignty; a great yogin, a great archer, of great strength and prowess.'

Verse 22 (skanda.8.25.22)

अजय्यश्चैव जेता च पूज्येज्यश्च सदा भव । अहं यत्र भवांस्तत्र यत्र त्वं तत्र चाप्यहम्

ajayyaścaiva jetā ca pūjyejyaśca sadā bhava | ahaṁ yatra bhavāṁstatra yatra tvaṁ tatra cāpyaham

'Be ever unconquerable, a conqueror, worthy of worship and of offering worship. Wherever I am, there you shall be; and wherever you are, there I too shall be.'

Verse 23 (skanda.8.25.23)

यस्त्वां द्वेष्टि स मां द्वेष्टि यस्त्वामनु स मामनु । अयञ्च ते पिता पुत्र परमैश्वर्यसंयुतः

yastvāṁ dveṣṭi sa māṁ dveṣṭi yastvāmanu sa māmanu | ayañca te pitā putra paramaiśvaryasaṁyutaḥ

'Whoever hates you hates me; whoever follows you follows me. And this father of yours, my son, endowed with supreme sovereignty —'

Verse 24 (skanda.8.25.24)

भविष्यति गणाध्यक्षो महागणपतिर्मम । विमानं चास्य वैभ्राजं कामगं सर्वकाञ्चनम्

bhaviṣyati gaṇādhyakṣo mahāgaṇapatirmama | vimānaṁ cāsya vaibhrājaṁ kāmagaṁ sarvakāñcanam

'— shall become a chief of the ganas, my great lord of ganas. And to him I grant a celestial car named Vaibhraja, moving at will, made entirely of gold —'

Verse 25 (skanda.8.25.25)

उपेतं भवनैर्दिव्यैः प्रयच्छामि जनावृतम् । तेनायं सर्वलोकेषु चरिष्यति यथेप्सितम्

upetaṁ bhavanairdivyaiḥ prayacchāmi janāvṛtam | tenāyaṁ sarvalokeṣu cariṣyati yathepsitam

'— furnished with divine mansions, thronged with attendants; by that he shall roam through all the worlds as he desires.'

Verse 26 (skanda.8.25.26)

स्थानं श्रीपर्वते चास्य भविष्यति सुपूजितम् । भृगौ तस्मिँश्च यः प्राणाँस्त्यक्ष्यते वै सुधार्मिकः स कामचारी वैभ्राजे गणपोस्य भविष्यति

sthānaṁ śrīparvate cāsya bhaviṣyati supūjitam | bhṛgau tasmi~śca yaḥ prāṇā~styakṣyate vai sudhārmikaḥ sa kāmacārī vaibhrāje gaṇaposya bhaviṣyati

'His abode shall be on Shriparvata, greatly honoured; and whoever, being righteous, gives up his life-breaths on that mountain-precipice, shall become a gana of his, moving freely there in the Vaibhraja realm.'

Verse 27 (skanda.8.25.27)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। ततो देवी महाभागा शैलादेर्वरयद्वरम् । सोब्रवीत्त्वयि भक्तिर्मे सदैवानपगा भवेत्

sanatkumāra uvāca| tato devī mahābhāgā śailādervarayadvaram | sobravīttvayi bhaktirme sadaivānapagā bhavet

Sanatkumara said: Then the illustrious Goddess granted a boon to Shilada as well. He said: 'May my devotion to you never depart.'

Verse 28 (skanda.8.25.28)

ततो मरुत्सुता चैव उभाभ्यामभि चोदिता । वरान् वृणु यथेष्टं वै ताविदं प्रत्युवाच ह

tato marutsutā caiva ubhābhyāmabhi coditā | varān vṛṇu yatheṣṭaṁ vai tāvidaṁ pratyuvāca ha

Then the daughter of the Maruts too, urged by both of them, 'Choose your boons as you wish' — she replied to them thus —

Verse 29 (skanda.8.25.29)

युवयोरस्तु भक्तिर्मे तथा भर्त्तरि चैव हि । नित्यं चानपगा स्यान्मे धर्मे च मतिरुत्तमा एतमिच्छामि देवेशौ वरं वरसहस्रदौ

yuvayorastu bhaktirme tathā bharttari caiva hi | nityaṁ cānapagā syānme dharme ca matiruttamā etamicchāmi deveśau varaṁ varasahasradau

— 'May my devotion to you two, and likewise to my husband, be ever unwavering; and may my mind be ever excellently disposed toward Dharma. This is the boon I desire, O you two lords of gods, granters of a thousand boons.'

Verse 30 (skanda.8.25.30)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। ततस्तावेवमेतत्ते भवितेति शुचिस्मिते । ऊचतुर्मुदितौ देवौ स्नुषान्तां वरवर्णिनीम्

sanatkumāra uvāca| tatastāvevametatte bhaviteti śucismite | ūcaturmuditau devau snuṣāntāṁ varavarṇinīm

Sanatkumara said: Then those two gods, delighted, said to her, the pure-smiling, most excellent daughter-in-law: 'So it shall be for you.'

Verse 31 (skanda.8.25.31)

नारायणं समालोक्य ब्रह्माणं च तथा हरः । अद्यप्रभृति नन्दीशो युवाभ्यामादृतः सदा

nārāyaṇaṁ samālokya brahmāṇaṁ ca tathā haraḥ | adyaprabhṛti nandīśo yuvābhyāmādṛtaḥ sadā

Hara, looking upon Narayana and Brahma, said: 'From this day forward, Nandisha shall ever be honoured by you two.'

Verse 32 (skanda.8.25.32)

प्रभुत्वेन हि देवानां प्रतीहारत्वमेष्यति । युवयोर्मयि या भक्तिस्तथा स्नेहोथ नन्दिनि

prabhutvena hi devānāṁ pratīhāratvameṣyati | yuvayormayi yā bhaktistathā snehotha nandini

'By this lordship, he shall obtain the office of gate-keeper of the gods. Whatever devotion you two bear toward me, let that same affection be toward Nandi.' (One further verse here is entirely lost in the manuscript.)

Verse 33 (skanda.8.25.33)

एवं भवतु देवेश नात्र कार्या विचारणा । गणाश्चास्य ततोभ्येत्य सर्वे देवप्रियेप्सया

evaṁ bhavatu deveśa nātra kāryā vicāraṇā | gaṇāścāsya tatobhyetya sarve devapriyepsayā

'Let it be so, O lord of gods; no further deliberation is needed on this.' Then all his ganas, having come, desiring to please the god —

Verse 34 (skanda.8.25.34)

वरं ददुर्महासत्वाः स वव्रे काञ्चनप्रभः । युष्मासु मम भक्तिश्च ऐश्वर्यञ्चापि संमतम् वंद्याश्च यूयं सर्वे मे प्रियो युष्माकमेव च

varaṁ dadurmahāsatvāḥ sa vavre kāñcanaprabhaḥ | yuṣmāsu mama bhaktiśca aiśvaryañcāpi saṁmatam vaṁdyāśca yūyaṁ sarve me priyo yuṣmākameva ca

— those great beings gave a boon; and he, golden of hue, chose: 'May my devotion to you all be granted, and sovereignty too; may you all be worthy of my reverence, and may I be dear to you as well.'

Verse 35 (skanda.8.25.35)

गणा ऊचुः। भवान् यन्ता ऽनुमन्ता च गतिरागतिरेव च । अस्माकमीशः सर्वेषां देवानामपि चेश्वरः

gaṇā ūcuḥ| bhavān yantā 'numantā ca gatirāgatireva ca | asmākamīśaḥ sarveṣāṁ devānāmapi ceśvaraḥ

The ganas said: 'You are our controller and our approver, our going and our coming; you are the lord of us all, and the lord even of the gods.'

Verse 36 (skanda.8.25.36)

कुष्माण्डानां वरिष्ठश्च रुद्राणां त्वं महाबलः । ईतीनां द्वारपालश्च प्रमथानां तथैव च

kuṣmāṇḍānāṁ variṣṭhaśca rudrāṇāṁ tvaṁ mahābalaḥ | ītīnāṁ dvārapālaśca pramathānāṁ tathaiva ca

'You are the most excellent of the Kushmandas, and the mighty one of the Rudras; the gatekeeper of the Itis, and likewise of the Pramathas.'

Verse 37 (skanda.8.25.37)

महाबलो महायोगी सेनानीस्त्वं हि नो मतः । त्वं भूतो भूतनेता च नायकोथ विनायकः

mahābalo mahāyogī senānīstvaṁ hi no mataḥ | tvaṁ bhūto bhūtanetā ca nāyakotha vināyakaḥ

'Of great might, a great yogin, you are indeed regarded by us as our commander. You are the Bhuta, and the leader of the Bhutas, the guide, and Vinayaka.'

Verse 38 (skanda.8.25.38)

ग्रहाणामधिपश्चैव रुद्रदण्डधरस्तथा । त्वमग्रयोधी शत्रुघ्नस्त्वं वीरस्त्वं दिवस्पतिः

grahāṇāmadhipaścaiva rudradaṇḍadharastathā | tvamagrayodhī śatrughnastvaṁ vīrastvaṁ divaspatiḥ

'You are the lord of the planetary spirits, and the bearer of Rudra's rod; you are the foremost warrior, the slayer of foes, the hero, the lord of heaven.'

Verse 39 (skanda.8.25.39)

महानुभावस्त्वञ्चैव क्षीरोदनिलयश्च ह । जप्येश्वरनिकेतश्च जप्येश्वरविभावितः

mahānubhāvastvañcaiva kṣīrodanilayaśca ha | japyeśvaraniketaśca japyeśvaravibhāvitaḥ

'You are of great majesty, and dwell in the ocean of milk; your abode is at Japyeshvara, and you were manifested at Japyeshvara.'

Verse 40 (skanda.8.25.40)

भावनः सर्वभूतानां वरदो वरदाचितः । अस्माकं वरदश्चैव भव भूतेश्वर प्रभो

bhāvanaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ varado varadācitaḥ | asmākaṁ varadaścaiva bhava bhūteśvara prabho

'You are the sustainer of all beings, a giver of boons, honoured by boon-givers; be a giver of boons to us too, O lord of beings, O master.'

Verse 41 (skanda.8.25.41)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। स एवं गणपैः सर्वैः स्तुतो नन्दीश्वरः प्रभुः । उवाच प्रणतः सर्वान् ब्रूत किं करवाणि वः

sanatkumāra uvāca| sa evaṁ gaṇapaiḥ sarvaiḥ stuto nandīśvaraḥ prabhuḥ | uvāca praṇataḥ sarvān brūta kiṁ karavāṇi vaḥ

Sanatkumara said: That lord Nandishvara, thus praised by all the lords of ganas, bowed and said to them all: 'Tell me, what shall I do for you?'

Verse 42 (skanda.8.25.42)

त एवमुक्ता गणपाः सर्व एव महाबलाः । ऊचुस्तं दिव्यभावज्ञा देवदेवस्य सन्निधौ

ta evamuktā gaṇapāḥ sarva eva mahābalāḥ | ūcustaṁ divyabhāvajñā devadevasya sannidhau

Thus addressed, all those lords of ganas, of great might, knowers of the divine nature, said to him, in the presence of the God of gods —

Verse 43 (skanda.8.25.43)

त्वमस्माकं गणाध्यक्षः कृतो देवेन शंभुना । अस्माभिश्चाभिषिक्तस्त्वं नायको धर्मदायकः

tvamasmākaṁ gaṇādhyakṣaḥ kṛto devena śaṁbhunā | asmābhiścābhiṣiktastvaṁ nāyako dharmadāyakaḥ

'You have been made our chief of ganas by the god Shambhu; and you have been consecrated by us, our guide, the giver of dharma.'

Verse 44 (skanda.8.25.44)

स त्वं शिवश्च सौम्यश्च गुणवानगुणेष्वपि । क्षमाशौचदमोपेतो भव नः प्रियकृत् सदा

sa tvaṁ śivaśca saumyaśca guṇavānaguṇeṣvapi | kṣamāśaucadamopeto bhava naḥ priyakṛt sadā

'Be you auspicious, gentle, virtuous even amid the faultless, endowed with patience, purity, and self-control; and be ever one who does what pleases us.'

Verse 45 (skanda.8.25.45)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। एवमुक्तस्तदा सर्वान् प्रणम्य बहुमानतः । शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय गणपानस्तुवत्तदा

sanatkumāra uvāca| evamuktastadā sarvān praṇamya bahumānataḥ | śirasyañjalimādhāya gaṇapānastuvattadā

Sanatkumara said: Thus addressed, he then, having bowed to them all with great honour, and having placed his joined palms upon his head, praised the lords of ganas.

Verse 46 (skanda.8.25.46)

नन्द्युवाच। नमो वः सर्वभूतेभ्यो नमो योगिभ्य एव च । नमश्चाप्यनिकेतेभ्यो योगीशेभ्यो नमो नमः

nandyuvāca| namo vaḥ sarvabhūtebhyo namo yogibhya eva ca | namaścāpyaniketebhyo yogīśebhyo namo namaḥ

Nandi said: 'Salutation to you all, to all beings, and salutation to the yogins; salutation to the homeless ones, and salutation, salutation to the lords of yogins.'

Verse 47 (skanda.8.25.47)

नमः कामचरेभ्यश्च नम उग्रेभ्य एव च । मृत्युभ्यश्च यमेभ्यश्च कालेभ्यश्च नमो नमः

namaḥ kāmacarebhyaśca nama ugrebhya eva ca | mṛtyubhyaśca yamebhyaśca kālebhyaśca namo namaḥ

'Salutation to those who move at will, and salutation to the fierce ones; salutation, salutation to the deaths, the Yamas, and the times.'

Verse 48 (skanda.8.25.48)

नमः काञ्चनमालेभ्यः सर्वधर्मभ्य एव च । नमो वो वधःकृद्भ्यश्च अवध्येभ्यस्तथैव च

namaḥ kāñcanamālebhyaḥ sarvadharmabhya eva ca | namo vo vadhaḥkṛdbhyaśca avadhyebhyastathaiva ca

'Salutation to those garlanded with gold, and to all forms of dharma; salutation to you, the slayers, and likewise to the unslayable.'

Verse 49 (skanda.8.25.49)

नमः परमयोगिभ्यो जटिभ्यश्च नमो नमः । नमो वो दृश्यरूपेभ्यो विकृतेभ्यस्तथैव च

namaḥ paramayogibhyo jaṭibhyaśca namo namaḥ | namo vo dṛśyarūpebhyo vikṛtebhyastathaiva ca

'Salutation to the supreme yogins, and salutation, salutation to the matted-haired ones; salutation to you of visible form, and likewise to those of distorted form.'

Verse 50 (skanda.8.25.50)

नमो वल्कलत्रासोभ्यः कृत्तिवासोभ्य एव च । नमः श्वेताम्बरस्रग्भ्यश्चित्रस्रग्भ्यो नमो नमः

namo valkalatrāsobhyaḥ kṛttivāsobhya eva ca | namaḥ śvetāmbarasragbhyaścitrasragbhyo namo namaḥ

'Salutation to those clad in bark-garments, and to those clad in hides; salutation to those garlanded in white, and salutation, salutation to those with colourful garlands.'

Verse 51 (skanda.8.25.51)

धावद्भ्यश्च द्रवद्भ्यश्च संस्थितेभ्यो नमो नमः । नमो मुनिभ्यो गायद्भ्यो जपद्भ्यश्च नमो नमः

dhāvadbhyaśca dravadbhyaśca saṁsthitebhyo namo namaḥ | namo munibhyo gāyadbhyo japadbhyaśca namo namaḥ

'Salutation, salutation to those who run, who flow, and who stand still; salutation, salutation to the sages who sing and who recite.'

Verse 52 (skanda.8.25.52)

नमः शरभरूपेभ्यः शतरूपेभ्य एव च । नमः पर्वतरूपेभ्यो व्याघ्ररूपेभ्य एव च

namaḥ śarabharūpebhyaḥ śatarūpebhya eva ca | namaḥ parvatarūpebhyo vyāghrarūpebhya eva ca

'Salutation to those in the form of sharabhas, and to those of a hundred forms; salutation to those in the form of mountains, and to those in the form of tigers.'

Verse 53 (skanda.8.25.53)

नमो मार्जाररूपेभ्यः काकोलूकेभ्य एव च । नमो दैवतरूपेभ्यः पवनेभ्यस्तथैव च

namo mārjārarūpebhyaḥ kākolūkebhya eva ca | namo daivatarūpebhyaḥ pavanebhyastathaiva ca

'Salutation to those in the form of cats, and to crows and owls; salutation to those in divine form, and likewise to the winds.'

Verse 54 (skanda.8.25.54)

नमोग्निभ्यस्तथाद्भ्यश्च वरुणेभ्यस्तथैव च । नमो धनेशरूपेभ्यः सर्वरूपेभ्य एव च

namognibhyastathādbhyaśca varuṇebhyastathaiva ca | namo dhaneśarūpebhyaḥ sarvarūpebhya eva ca

'Salutation to the fires, and to the waters, and likewise to the forms of Varuna; salutation to those in the form of the lord of wealth, and to all forms.'

Verse 55 (skanda.8.25.55)

नमश्चोदरवक्त्रेभ्यः सर्ववक्त्रेभ्य एव च । नमो वामनरूपेभ्यः कामरूपेभ्य एव च

namaścodaravaktrebhyaḥ sarvavaktrebhya eva ca | namo vāmanarūpebhyaḥ kāmarūpebhya eva ca

'Salutation to those with faces on their bellies, and to those with faces everywhere; salutation to those of dwarf form, and to those of form assumed at will.'

Verse 56 (skanda.8.25.56)

देवासुरमनुष्याणामाप्यायिभ्यो नमो नमः । नमो वः सर्वदेवानां नमो वः सर्वतः शुभाः

devāsuramanuṣyāṇāmāpyāyibhyo namo namaḥ | namo vaḥ sarvadevānāṁ namo vaḥ sarvataḥ śubhāḥ

'Salutation, salutation to those who nourish gods, asuras, and men; salutation to you of all the gods; salutation to you, auspicious ones, from every side.'

Verse 57 (skanda.8.25.57)

ग्रहेभ्यश्च नमो वोस्तु मोक्षेभ्यश्च नमस्तथा । शुभेभ्यश्च नमो वोस्तु अशुभेभ्यस्तथैव च मम सौम्या शिवाश्चैव भवन्तु गणनायकाः

grahebhyaśca namo vostu mokṣebhyaśca namastathā | śubhebhyaśca namo vostu aśubhebhyastathaiva ca mama saumyā śivāścaiva bhavantu gaṇanāyakāḥ

'Salutation be to you, planetary spirits, and salutation likewise to those of liberation; salutation be to you, auspicious ones, and likewise to the inauspicious. May the lords of the ganas be ever gentle and gracious to me.'

Verse 58 (skanda.8.25.58)

इति स्तुता गणपतयो महाबलाः शुभैर्वचोभिः सुरशत्रुनाशनाः । दिशन्तु मे सुखमतुलं सुखप्रदा बलञ्च वीर्यं स्थिरताञ्च संयुगे

iti stutā gaṇapatayo mahābalāḥ śubhairvacobhiḥ suraśatrunāśanāḥ | diśantu me sukhamatulaṁ sukhapradā balañca vīryaṁ sthiratāñca saṁyuge

Thus praised with auspicious words, may those mighty lords of ganas, destroyers of the enemies of the gods, bestowers of happiness, grant me incomparable happiness, and strength, valour, and steadfastness in battle.

Verse 59 (skanda.8.25.59)

तपोक्षयं स्थानमथातुलां गतिं यशस्तथा बहु धर्मनित्यताम् । दिशन्तु सर्वं मनसेप्सितञ्च मे सुरेश्वराः पुष्टिमनुत्तमां तथा

tapokṣayaṁ sthānamathātulāṁ gatiṁ yaśastathā bahu dharmanityatām | diśantu sarvaṁ manasepsitañca me sureśvarāḥ puṣṭimanuttamāṁ tathā

May those lords of the gods grant me imperishable austerity, an abode, an incomparable destiny, abundant fame, constancy in dharma, and everything my mind desires, and also unsurpassed prosperity.

Verse 60 (skanda.8.25.60)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। इमौ नन्दिगणेन्द्राणां स्तवौ योध्येति नित्यशः । सोश्वमेधावभृथवान् सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते

sanatkumāra uvāca| imau nandigaṇendrāṇāṁ stavau yodhyeti nityaśaḥ | sośvamedhāvabhṛthavān sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

Sanatkumara said: Whoever constantly studies these two hymns to Nandi, the lord of the ganas, becomes as one who has bathed after the horse-sacrifice, and is freed from all sins.

Verse 61 (skanda.8.25.61)

सन्ध्यायामपरस्यान्तु जपन् पापं दिवाकृतम् । पूर्वस्याँ च जपँश्चापि सर्वं रात्रिकृतं क्षिपेत्

sandhyāyāmaparasyāntu japan pāpaṁ divākṛtam | pūrvasyā~ ca japa~ścāpi sarvaṁ rātrikṛtaṁ kṣipet

Reciting it at the evening twilight, one casts off the sin committed during the day; and reciting it at the morning twilight, one casts off all that was done at night.

Verse 62 (skanda.8.25.62)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। ततस्ते गणपाः सर्वे संस्तुतास्तेन धीमता । विसृष्टाश्च तदा जग्मुः प्रणिपत्य वृषध्वजम्

sanatkumāra uvāca| tataste gaṇapāḥ sarve saṁstutāstena dhīmatā | visṛṣṭāśca tadā jagmuḥ praṇipatya vṛṣadhvajam

Sanatkumara said: Then all those lords of ganas, thus praised by that wise one, having bowed to the Bull-bannered one, took their leave and departed.

Verse 63 (skanda.8.25.63)

देवाश्च सर्वलोकाश्च ततो देवः स्वयं भवः । सृष्ट्वा नन्दीश्वरगृहं प्रदाय च महामनाः

devāśca sarvalokāśca tato devaḥ svayaṁ bhavaḥ | sṛṣṭvā nandīśvaragṛhaṁ pradāya ca mahāmanāḥ

Then the gods and all the worlds likewise departed. The god Bhava himself, that great-minded one, having created a dwelling for Nandishvara and bestowed it upon him,

Verse 64 (skanda.8.25.64)

ईप्सितं सह देव्या वै जगाम स्थानमव्ययम् । य इदं नन्दिनो जन्म वरदानं तथैव च

īpsitaṁ saha devyā vai jagāma sthānamavyayam | ya idaṁ nandino janma varadānaṁ tathaiva ca

— went, together with the Goddess, to his desired, imperishable abode. Whoever recites this birth of Nandi, and likewise his boon-giving —

Verse 65 (skanda.8.25.65)

अभिषेकं विवाहश्च पठेद् वा श्रावयीत वा । ब्राह्मणः स मृतो याति नन्दीश्वरसलोकताम्

abhiṣekaṁ vivāhaśca paṭhed vā śrāvayīta vā | brāhmaṇaḥ sa mṛto yāti nandīśvarasalokatām

— his consecration and marriage — whatever brahmin recites it, or causes it to be heard, upon death goes to the world of Nandishvara.

Verse 66 (skanda.8.25.66)

यो नियतस्तु पठेत् प्रयतात्मा सर्वमिदं प्रणतो भवभक्त्या । सोपि गतः परलोकविचारी नन्दिसमोनुचरो हि

yo niyatastu paṭhet prayatātmā sarvamidaṁ praṇato bhavabhaktyā | sopi gataḥ paralokavicārī nandisamonucaro hi

Whoever, disciplined and self-controlled, recites all this with devotion to Bhava, bowing down — he too, a discerner of the world beyond, becomes an attendant equal to Nandi. (The remainder of this verse is lost in the manuscript.)
