Sanatkumara said: At this very time, O Vyasa, Daksha Prajapati, king, son of Prachetas, performed a sacrifice with an Ashvamedha.

The Goddess, daughter of the best of mountains, saw him carrying the offerings, and remembered that old enmity and the reason for the curse.
Verse 4 (skanda.8.32.4)
uvāca cainaṁ girijā bodhayantī purātanam | śliṣṭaṁ madhurayā vācā kāraṇena samanvitam
Girija spoke to him, reminding him of that ancient matter, with sweet, gentle words, together with its reason.

devānāṁ bhāgadheyāni vahatyagnirayaṁ bhava | nāyaṁ tava maheśāna kiṁ kāraṇamatidyute
This fire, O Bhava, is carrying the shares of the gods - this is not you, O great Lord! What is the reason, O radiant one?

Grant us happiness, O Mother, being pleased with us. The auspicious wife of Mahadeva, whom we contemplate with a single, unwavering awareness always meditating upon her - whatever terrible thing has been done by you, may it, being now pleased, be undone for us. varā~śca .vipulān divyān dvīpañcāpi ghṛtodakam | bāhujebhyaśca subahūn gaṇebhyaḥ pradadau varān
He also bestowed abundant divine boons, and the Ghritodaka island, and gave many boons to the ganas born from His arms.
Verse 204 (skanda.8.32.204)
sanatkumāra uvāca | evaṁ sa dakṣayajño vai vidhvasto vyāsa śambhunā | yajñasya ca śiraśchinnaṁ yathaitat kathitaṁ tava
Sanatkumara said: Thus, O Vyasa, was Daksha's sacrifice destroyed by Shambhu, and the head of the Sacrifice cut off, as this has been told to you.
Verse 205 (skanda.8.32.205)

Vyasa said: 'That terrible, divine, fearsome one, born from the Goddess's mouth, O God - where did she go, and how? This I wish to know.'
Verse 206 (skanda.8.32.206)

sanatkumāra uvāca | stutā yadā bhagavatī praṇatai ssurasattamaiḥ | tadāsya sāmbikā prāha brūhi kiṅkaravāṇyaham
Sanatkumara said: When the Blessed Goddess was praised by the bowing best of gods, then Ambika said: 'Tell me, what shall I do?'
Verse 207 (skanda.8.32.207)

tato brahmā mahādevīṁ praṇamya bahumānataḥ | uvāca duhitṛtve me bhavatveṣā sureśvari
Then Brahma, bowing to the great Goddess with great honor, said: 'O Sureshvari, let this one be a daughter to me.'
Verse 208 (skanda.8.32.208)

Sanatkumara said: Saying 'So be it,' Uma gave that goddess as a daughter; and he, saying 'You are Mrityu,' appointed her to a terrible task.
Verse 209 (skanda.8.32.209)

The goddess, auspicious in the taking of life-breath, was appointed over all living beings; she too, appointed by Brahma Himself to that task, remains, O Lord of gods, with raised arms, ever engaged, by you and by me.
Verse 210 (skanda.8.32.210)

I have taken refuge, for the sake of happiness, in Shankara - the feller of Bhaga's eyes, the forest-fire in Daksha's sacrifice, the fire that consumed the city of Madana, whose body is radiant with the crescent moon, the doom of the sacrifice of the gods' preceptor, the protector-lord of the seven worlds.
