The Origin and Glory of the Bull (Vrishabha)

Verse 1 (skanda.8.33.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । यथा तु वृषभो देवमवहन्मुनिपुङ्गव । तत्तेहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि नमस्कृत्य वृषध्वजम्

sanatkumāra uvāca | yathā tu vṛṣabho devamavahanmunipuṅgava | tattehaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi namaskṛtya vṛṣadhvajam

Sanatkumara said: O foremost of sages, how the Bull came to bear the Lord -- that I shall now relate, having bowed to the Bull-bannered One.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.33.2)

पूर्वमेव महासत्वो धर्मो यज्ञ सहायवान् । तताप विपुलं न्यासतपः परमदुश्चरम्

pūrvameva mahāsatvo dharmo yajña sahāyavān | tatāpa vipulaṁ nyāsatapaḥ paramaduścaram

In ancient times, the mighty Dharma, together with Yajna as his companion, performed vast and most arduous austerity of renunciation.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.33.3)

हिमवन्तं गिरिं प्राप्य वाय्वाहारौ बभूवतुः । वर्षाणान्तु सहस्राणि दश द्वादश चैव तौ

himavantaṁ giriṁ prāpya vāyvāhārau babhūvatuḥ | varṣāṇāntu sahasrāṇi daśa dvādaśa caiva tau

Reaching the Himalayan mountain, the two of them lived on air alone, remaining so for ten thousand and twelve years.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.33.4)

मानुषाणि ततो भूयः शाकाहारौ बभूवतुः । ततोचिरात् तर्योर्देवो गणैस्सह महाद्युतिः

mānuṣāṇi tato bhūyaḥ śākāhārau babhūvatuḥ | tatocirāt taryordevo gaṇaissaha mahādyutiḥ

After that, for further human years they lived on leaves alone. Then, before long, the resplendent Lord appeared before them together with His hosts.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.33.5)

सवैस्समानरूपैस्तैर्दर्शनं प्रददौ हरः । ताँस्तौ महेश्वरान् दृष्टवा बहून् वै सदृशप्रभान्

savaissamānarūpaistairdarśanaṁ pradadau haraḥ | tāṁstau maheśvarān dṛṣṭavā bahūn vai sadṛśaprabhān

Hara showed himself to them together with many attendants identical in form to himself; the two beheld those numerous Great Lords, all alike in splendour.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.33.6)

परस्परममन्येतां कोन्वेषामीश्वरो भवेत् । तौ तदा वीक्ष्य संमन्त्र्य स्मृत्वा चैव पुनः पुनः

parasparamamanyetāṁ konveṣāmīśvaro bhavet | tau tadā vīkṣya saṁmantrya smṛtvā caiva punaḥ punaḥ

They wondered among themselves which of these could be the true Lord. Beholding them thus, they deliberated together and pondered again and again.

Verse 7 (skanda.8.33.7)

मध्ये महेश्वरं तेषां मेनाते तेजसां निधिम् । तौ तं मध्ये भवं देवं प्रणम्य बहुमानतः । शिरसोरञ्जली कृत्वा तुष्टुवाते मितौजसौ

madhye maheśvaraṁ teṣāṁ menāte tejasāṁ nidhim | tau taṁ madhye bhavaṁ devaṁ praṇamya bahumānataḥ | śirasorañjalī kṛtvā tuṣṭuvāte mitaujasau

Amid them they recognized the treasury of splendour, the Great Lord, standing in the middle. Bowing to Him with great reverence, joining their palms above their heads, the two, of lesser radiance, praised Him with hymns.

Verse 8 (skanda.8.33.8)

धर्मयज्ञौ ऊचतुः । नमस्त्रैलोक्यनाथाय दिग्वासायामृतात्मते । चतुष्पथनिवासाय चतुष्पथरताय च

dharmayajñau ūcatuḥ | namastrailokyanāthāya digvāsāyāmṛtātmate | catuṣpathanivāsāya catuṣpatharatāya ca

Dharma and Yajna said: Salutations to the Lord of the three worlds, clad in the directions, whose essence is immortal nectar, who dwells at the crossroads and delights in the crossroads.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.33.9)

चतुर्व्यूहाय देवाय त्रिनेत्राय भवाय च । चतुर्मुखाय शुद्धाय जालान्तर विचारिणे

caturvyūhāya devāya trinetrāya bhavāya ca | caturmukhāya śuddhāya jālāntara vicāriṇe

To the God of the four arrays, the three-eyed one, to Bhava, to the four-faced, the pure one, who moves within the net -- salutations.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.33.10)

इन्द्रानुग्रहकर्त्रे च ब्रह्मानुग्रहकारिणे । ऊर्ध्वलिङ्गाय देवाय मदनायामदाय च

indrānugrahakartre ca brahmānugrahakāriṇe | ūrdhvaliṅgāya devāya madanāyāmadāya ca

To the giver of grace to Indra, the giver of grace to Brahma, to the God of the upraised linga, to Madana and yet to the one free of pride -- salutations.

Verse 11 (skanda.8.33.11)

नमो हिरण्यवर्णाय सूर्याक्षाय तथैव च । नमः पवित्रकेशाय दीर्घजिह्वाय चैव हि

namo hiraṇyavarṇāya sūryākṣāya tathaiva ca | namaḥ pavitrakeśāya dīrghajihvāya caiva hi

Salutations to the golden-hued one, to the one whose eye is the sun, to the one of sacred locks, and to the one of the long tongue.

Verse 12 (skanda.8.33.12)

नमस्ते नैकपादाय एकाक्षाय नमो नमः । नमःसहस्रघण्टाय सहस्राक्षाय वै नमः

namaste naikapādāya ekākṣāya namo namaḥ | namaḥsahasraghaṇṭāya sahasrākṣāya vai namaḥ

Salutations to you of many feet, salutations again to the one-eyed one; salutations to the one with a thousand bells, and to the one with a thousand eyes.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.33.13)

नमः पिनाकिने चैव ध्वजिने च नमो नमः । नमः सहस्रशीर्षाय संवर्त्ताय नमो नमः

namaḥ pinākine caiva dhvajine ca namo namaḥ | namaḥ sahasraśīrṣāya saṁvarttāya namo namaḥ

Salutations to the wielder of the Pinaka bow, salutations again to the bearer of the banner; salutations to the thousand-headed one, and to Samvarta.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.33.14)

नमः स्तव्याय वै नित्यं शत्रुघ्नाय नमो नमः । नमो भवाय भव्याय भावनाय नमो नमः

namaḥ stavyāya vai nityaṁ śatrughnāya namo namaḥ | namo bhavāya bhavyāya bhāvanāya namo namaḥ

Salutations to the one ever worthy of praise, salutations again to the destroyer of foes; salutations to Bhava, to Bhavya, and to Bhavana.

Verse 15 (skanda.8.33.15)

नमो वराय वै नित्यं वरदाय तथैव च । गोकर्णाय नमो नित्यमैश्वर्यपतये नमः

namo varāya vai nityaṁ varadāya tathaiva ca | gokarṇāya namo nityamaiśvaryapataye namaḥ

Salutations to the ever-excellent one, and likewise to the bestower of boons; salutations always to Gokarna, salutations to the Lord of majesty.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.33.16)

नमोस्तु विष्वक्सेनाय प्रभासाय नमो नमः । नमोस्तु तेन्नदायैव प्राणदाय नमोस्तु ते

namostu viṣvaksenāya prabhāsāya namo namaḥ | namostu tennadāyaiva prāṇadāya namostu te

Salutations to Vishvaksena, salutations again to Prabhasa; salutations to you, the giver of food, and the giver of life-breath.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.33.17)

नमः प्रवर्तकायैव पद्ममालाय वै नमः । नमो महारथायैव भैरवाय नमो नमः

namaḥ pravartakāyaiva padmamālāya vai namaḥ | namo mahārathāyaiva bhairavāya namo namaḥ

Salutations to the initiator of all action, salutations to the one garlanded with lotuses; salutations to the great charioteer, salutations again to Bhairava.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.33.18)

नमश्चतुर्मुखायैव महादेवाय वै नमः । नमोस्तु ब्रह्मणे चैव ध्रुवायैव चलाय च

namaścaturmukhāyaiva mahādevāya vai namaḥ | namostu brahmaṇe caiva dhruvāyaiva calāya ca

Salutations to the four-faced one, salutations to Mahadeva; salutations to the form of Brahma, to the changeless, and to the ever-moving.

Verse 19 (skanda.8.33.19)

नमोस्तु नारीरूपाय सुभगाय नमो नमः । मध्यमाय नमस्तेस्तु नमस्ते सर्वतस्तथा

namostu nārīrūpāya subhagāya namo namaḥ | madhyamāya namastestu namaste sarvatastathā

Salutations to the one who assumes the form of a woman, salutations again to the auspicious one; salutations to you of the middle form, salutations to you from every side.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.33.20)

नमोनुमन्ता मन्ता त्वं सर्वभूतप्रवर्तक । आवयोरीप्सितान् कामान् विधत्स्व भुवनेश्वर

namonumantā mantā tvaṁ sarvabhūtapravartaka | āvayorīpsitān kāmān vidhatsva bhuvaneśvara

You are the approver and the thinker, O mover of all beings; O Lord of the worlds, grant us both the desires we long for.

Verse 21 (skanda.8.33.21)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । योनेन स्तौति वै नित्यं नियमेन समन्वितः । सर्वकामैस्स सम्पन्नो यथेष्टां गतिमाप्नुयात्

sanatkumāra uvāca | yonena stauti vai nityaṁ niyamena samanvitaḥ | sarvakāmaissa sampanno yatheṣṭāṁ gatimāpnuyāt

Sanatkumara said: Whoever, observing the vow, ever praises with this hymn, becomes endowed with all desires and attains the destination he wishes.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.33.22)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथ देवस्तु तान् सर्वाननयत्प्रकृतिं गणान् । नन्दिनं चैव देवीञ्च स्वयं चात्मानमप्युत । उवाच चैतौ तुष्टोस्मि गृह्यतामीप्सितो वरः

sanatkumāra uvāca | atha devastu tān sarvānanayatprakṛtiṁ gaṇān | nandinaṁ caiva devīñca svayaṁ cātmānamapyuta | uvāca caitau tuṣṭosmi gṛhyatāmīpsito varaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Then the Lord led all the hosts, Nandin, the Goddess, and Himself back to their natural forms, and said to the two: 'I am pleased; choose the boon you desire.'

Verse 23 (skanda.8.33.23)

देवौ ऊचतुः । यदि तुष्टोसि देवेश यदि देयो वरश्च नौः । जात्यन्तरगतौ नित्यं वहेव त्वां सुरेश्वर

devau ūcatuḥ | yadi tuṣṭosi deveśa yadi deyo varaśca nauḥ | jātyantaragatau nityaṁ vaheva tvāṁ sureśvara

The two gods said: If you are pleased, O Lord of gods, and if a boon is to be granted us, then, O Lord of the immortals, let us in another birth ever bear you upon ourselves.

Verse 24 (skanda.8.33.24)

इदञ्च गुह्यं स्थानं नौ तपसातीव भावितम् । तव चैव प्रसादेन भवेत् पुण्यं सुरेश्वर

idañca guhyaṁ sthānaṁ nau tapasātīva bhāvitam | tava caiva prasādena bhavet puṇyaṁ sureśvara

And may this secret place, made most sacred by our austerity, become, by your grace, O Lord of gods, a place of merit.

Verse 25 (skanda.8.33.25)

देवदेव उवाच । इदं मम परं गुह्यं भवितृ स्थानमुत्तमम् । पञ्चेषुक्षेपमात्रं वै मृतोत्र गणपो भवेत्

devadeva uvāca | idaṁ mama paraṁ guhyaṁ bhavitṛ sthānamuttamam | pañceṣukṣepamātraṁ vai mṛtotra gaṇapo bhavet

The God of gods said: This shall be my supreme and secret, excellent abode; whoever dies here, within the throw of five arrows, shall become a lord of my hosts.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.33.26)

यस्मान्मध्ये भवोस्मीति युवयोरर्चितः स्थितः । तस्मान्नाम्ना तु विख्यातमिदं भवतु मध्यमम्

yasmānmadhye bhavosmīti yuvayorarcitaḥ sthitaḥ | tasmānnāmnā tu vikhyātamidaṁ bhavatu madhyamam

Since I, Bhava, stood worshipped here in the midst of you two, therefore let this place become renowned by the name Madhyama.

Verse 27 (skanda.8.33.27)

युवां जात्यन्तरं प्राप्य पूजितौ बलवत्तरौ । वाहनत्वं ममासाद्य लोकान् सन्धारयिष्यथः

yuvāṁ jātyantaraṁ prāpya pūjitau balavattarau | vāhanatvaṁ mamāsādya lokān sandhārayiṣyathaḥ

Attaining another birth, honoured and mightier than before, you two shall become my vehicle and shall sustain the worlds.

Verse 28 (skanda.8.33.28)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तत एवं तदा देवस्तावुक्त्वा देवसत्तमौ । जगाम गणपैस्सार्धं मन्दरं हेमकन्दरम्

sanatkumāra uvāca | tata evaṁ tadā devastāvuktvā devasattamau | jagāma gaṇapaissārdhaṁ mandaraṁ hemakandaram

Sanatkumara said: Having thus spoken to those two excellent gods, the Lord then departed with His hosts to Mount Mandara, with its golden caverns.

Verse 29 (skanda.8.33.29)

गतेथ देवे सगणे कालेन बहुना ततः । मन्वन्तरेस्मिन् सुरभी रुद्रमाराधयच्छुभा

gatetha deve sagaṇe kālena bahunā tataḥ | manvantaresmin surabhī rudramārādhayacchubhā

After the Lord had departed with His hosts, much time later, in this same Manvantara, the auspicious Surabhi worshipped Rudra.

Verse 30 (skanda.8.33.30)

तया वर्षसहस्रेण तपसा तोषितो भवः । जगाम दर्शनं व्यास वरदोस्मीति चाब्रवीत्

tayā varṣasahasreṇa tapasā toṣito bhavaḥ | jagāma darśanaṁ vyāsa varadosmīti cābravīt

Pleased by her thousand years of austerity, Bhava came to grant her his sight, O Vyasa, and said: 'I am ready to grant a boon.'

Verse 31 (skanda.8.33.31)

सा वव्रे पुत्रमतुलं सर्वप्राणभृतां वरम् । पुत्राँश्चान्यान्महासत्वान् यज्ञियान् सुरसत्तमान्

sā vavre putramatulaṁ sarvaprāṇabhṛtāṁ varam | putrāṁścānyānmahāsatvān yajñiyān surasattamān

She asked for an incomparable son, the best of all living beings, and also for other mighty sons, worthy of sacrifice, foremost among the gods.

Verse 32 (skanda.8.33.32)

तथा दुहितॄश्चान्याश्च जगद्धात्रीः सुशोभनाः । ततः सर्वं ददौ देवो ह्यदृश्यत्वं जगाम च

tathā duhitṝścānyāśca jagaddhātrīḥ suśobhanāḥ | tataḥ sarvaṁ dadau devo hyadṛśyatvaṁ jagāma ca

And she also asked for other beautiful daughters, sustainers of the world; then the Lord granted all of it and became invisible.

Verse 33 (skanda.8.33.33)

तस्मिन् गते महादेवे सुरभी दीप्ततेजसम् । सर्वभूताग्रजं पुत्रं वृषभं समसूयत

tasmin gate mahādeve surabhī dīptatejasam | sarvabhūtāgrajaṁ putraṁ vṛṣabhaṁ samasūyata

When Mahadeva had departed, Surabhi brought forth a son of blazing splendour, foremost among all beings -- the Bull.

Verse 34 (skanda.8.33.34)

एकादश तथा रुद्रान् वृषभस्यानुजान् शुभान् । सप्त कन्याश्च ता गा वै जगद्धात्री प्रसूयत

ekādaśa tathā rudrān vṛṣabhasyānujān śubhān | sapta kanyāśca tā gā vai jagaddhātrī prasūyata

That sustainer of the world also brought forth the eleven auspicious Rudras as the Bull's younger brothers, and seven daughters in the form of cows.

Verse 35 (skanda.8.33.35)

वृषभः स तु संगत्य नित्यं प्रातः कृताह्निकः । पितरं मातरं चैव तथैव च पितामहम्

vṛṣabhaḥ sa tu saṁgatya nityaṁ prātaḥ kṛtāhnikaḥ | pitaraṁ mātaraṁ caiva tathaiva ca pitāmaham

That Bull, having each morning completed his daily rites, would go to greet his father, his mother, and likewise his grandsire.

Verse 36 (skanda.8.33.36)

अभिवाद्यायते शुभ्रश्चतुर्दिग्गजसेवितम् । वनं सिद्धगणावासं यत्र सा ह्यमृतोद्भवा

abhivādyāyate śubhraścaturdiggajasevitam | vanaṁ siddhagaṇāvāsaṁ yatra sā hyamṛtodbhavā

Having paid homage, the radiant one would go to that forest, attended by elephants of the four quarters and inhabited by hosts of Siddhas, where she who was born of nectar dwelt.

Verse 37 (skanda.8.33.37)

दूर्वामृतरसा दिव्या छिन्नदग्धप्रसेहणी । स कदाचिद्वने तस्मिँश्चरन् तृप्तस्तृडर्द्दितः

dūrvāmṛtarasā divyā chinnadagdhaprasehaṇī | sa kadācidvane tasmiṁścaran tṛptastṛḍardditaḥ

There the divine durva grass, filled with nectar-sap, grew back again even when cut or burnt. One day, roaming in that forest, though sated, he was struck by thirst.

Verse 38 (skanda.8.33.38)

जगाम सागरं पातुं वृषराट् सुरभीसुतः । सोवगाह्य महाग्रासः सागरस्य तदा महत्

jagāma sāgaraṁ pātuṁ vṛṣarāṭ surabhīsutaḥ | sovagāhya mahāgrāsaḥ sāgarasya tadā mahat

Vrisharaja, son of Surabhi, went to the ocean to drink. Taking a mighty gulp, that great-bodied one plunged into the vast waters of the sea.

Verse 39 (skanda.8.33.39)

मध्यं व्यादाय वदनं सरुषं सतिमिंगिलम् । अपिबत् सागरजलं न च तृप्तिमुपागमत्

madhyaṁ vyādāya vadanaṁ saruṣaṁ satimiṁgilam | apibat sāgarajalaṁ na ca tṛptimupāgamat

Opening wide his mouth in fury, he drank the ocean's water along with its very sea-monsters, yet found no satisfaction.

Verse 40 (skanda.8.33.40)

तस्मिन् पिबति दैत्येन्द्राः सन्नद्धाः सासिमार्गणाः । सधनुष्पाणयस्सर्वे सहस्राणि चतुर्दश

tasmin pibati daityendrāḥ sannaddhāḥ sāsimārgaṇāḥ | sadhanuṣpāṇayassarve sahasrāṇi caturdaśa

As he drank thus, fourteen thousand lords of the Daityas, armored, with swords and arrows, all bows in hand, arrived.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.33.41)

निष्पेतुश्शक्रसंकाशा यमकालानलोपमाः । मयपुत्रा महासत्वा वृषभं प्रति वेगिताः

niṣpetuśśakrasaṁkāśā yamakālānalopamāḥ | mayaputrā mahāsatvā vṛṣabhaṁ prati vegitāḥ

Splendid as Indra, like the fire of Yama's doom, the mighty sons of Maya rushed swiftly at the Bull.

Verse 42 (skanda.8.33.42)

तांस्तथा रुषितान्दैत्यान् सासिमुद्गरतोमरान् । सहैव सागराम्भोभिरपिबत् स महाबलः

tāṁstathā ruṣitāndaityān sāsimudgaratomarān | sahaiva sāgarāmbhobhirapibat sa mahābalaḥ

That mighty one drank down those furious Daityas, armed with swords, maces, and lances, together with the ocean's waters.

Verse 43 (skanda.8.33.43)

तान् पीतान् पीयमानाँश्च दृष्टवा ह्यर्णववासिनः । वित्रेसुः सहसा सर्वे विनेदुश्चापि दुःखिताः

tān pītān pīyamānāṁśca dṛṣṭavā hyarṇavavāsinaḥ | vitresuḥ sahasā sarve vineduścāpi duḥkhitāḥ

Seeing them being drunk down and already swallowed, all the dwellers of the ocean were suddenly terrified, and cried out in distress.

Verse 44 (skanda.8.33.44)

ततस्समुद्रो भगवान् पीयमानः सुदुःखितः । वडवामुखमागत्य संवर्तं शरणं ययौ

tatassamudro bhagavān pīyamānaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ | vaḍavāmukhamāgatya saṁvartaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayau

Then the divine Ocean, greatly distressed at being drunk, went for refuge to Samvarta, the fire dwelling at the mare's-mouth.

Verse 45 (skanda.8.33.45)

स चानलः सुसंरब्धो दत्त्वा तस्य महाबलः । अभयं वृषमागत्य प्रोवाचेदं कृताञ्जलिः

sa cānalaḥ susaṁrabdho dattvā tasya mahābalaḥ | abhayaṁ vṛṣamāgatya provācedaṁ kṛtāñjaliḥ

That mighty and enraged Fire, having granted the Ocean safety, came before the Bull and, with joined palms, spoke thus.

Verse 46 (skanda.8.33.46)

संवर्त्त उवाच । सर्वभूतशरण्योयं दैत्यानाञ्चालयः शुभः । नैनं हीनं भवानद्भिः कर्तुमर्हति वीर्यवान्

saṁvartta uvāca | sarvabhūtaśaraṇyoyaṁ daityānāñcālayaḥ śubhaḥ | nainaṁ hīnaṁ bhavānadbhiḥ kartumarhati vīryavān

Samvarta said: This ocean is the refuge of all beings and the blessed abode of the Daityas; O mighty one, you ought not to deprive it of its waters.

Verse 47 (skanda.8.33.47)

वृषभ उवाच । न मे मतिरभूदग्ने निःशेषं कर्तुमम्बुधिम् । भवान् त्वस्य ये यतो मन्ता न करिष्येहं ततोद्यवै

vṛṣabha uvāca | na me matirabhūdagne niḥśeṣaṁ kartumambudhim | bhavān tvasya ye yato mantā na kariṣyehaṁ tatodyavai

The Bull said: O Fire, it was never my intent to drain the ocean utterly. Since you regard yourself its guardian, I shall not do so from now on.

Verse 48 (skanda.8.33.48)

यस्ते दर्पश्च गर्वश्च यद्बलं यच्च पौरुषम् । तन्मे दर्शय हव्येश पिबाम्येनं तवाग्रतः

yaste darpaśca garvaśca yadbalaṁ yacca pauruṣam | tanme darśaya havyeśa pibāmyenaṁ tavāgrataḥ

But O Lord of oblations, show me your pride, your arrogance, your strength, your manhood -- for I shall drink it dry before your very eyes.

Verse 49 (skanda.8.33.49)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । एवमुक्त्वा वृषेन्द्रस्तु वडवामुखवासिनम् । संरम्भात् सागरं पातुं निःशेषमुपचक्रमे

sanatkumāra uvāca | evamuktvā vṛṣendrastu vaḍavāmukhavāsinam | saṁrambhāt sāgaraṁ pātuṁ niḥśeṣamupacakrame

Sanatkumara said: Having spoken thus, the lord of bulls, in fury against the dweller of Vadavamukha, set about to drink the ocean dry.

Verse 50 (skanda.8.33.50)

अनल उवाच । न मे त्वं प्रतिमः शक्तौ न च वैरं त्वया हि मे । यत्र कृत्येहमाबद्धस्तत्करिष्ये तथा ह्यहम्

anala uvāca | na me tvaṁ pratimaḥ śaktau na ca vairaṁ tvayā hi me | yatra kṛtyehamābaddhastatkariṣye tathā hyaham

The Fire said: You are no match for me in power, nor have I any enmity with you; yet whatever duty I am bound to, that indeed I shall carry out.

Verse 51 (skanda.8.33.51)

न त्वं पास्यसि रक्षिष्ये सागरं मम सन्निधौ । अहं त्वां वारयिष्यामि सुरभीसुत कत्थन

na tvaṁ pāsyasi rakṣiṣye sāgaraṁ mama sannidhau | ahaṁ tvāṁ vārayiṣyāmi surabhīsuta katthana

You shall not drink it -- in my presence I shall protect the ocean; O son of Surabhi, I myself shall check your boasting.

Verse 52 (skanda.8.33.52)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततस्तं भगवान् वह्निरुपप्लुत्य महाद्युतिः । गले जग्राह बलवान् न चचाल ततः स च

sanatkumāra uvāca | tatastaṁ bhagavān vahnirupaplutya mahādyutiḥ | gale jagrāha balavān na cacāla tataḥ sa ca

Sanatkumara said: Then that mighty, most splendid Lord Fire leapt upon him and seized him by the throat, yet he did not budge.

Verse 53 (skanda.8.33.53)

यत् पीतं छर्दयामास तत्तोयं दानवैर्विना । औदरेणाग्निना तस्य ते दग्धाः सर्व एव हि

yat pītaṁ chardayāmāsa tattoyaṁ dānavairvinā | audareṇāgninā tasya te dagdhāḥ sarva eva hi

The water he had drunk he vomited out, but not the Danavas -- for all of them had already been consumed by the fire within his belly.

Verse 54 (skanda.8.33.54)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततः संवर्तको वह्निर्निगृहीतं ककुद्मिनम् । विसृज्योवाच गच्छेति न त्वां हन्मि वृषेश्वर

sanatkumāra uvāca | tataḥ saṁvartako vahnirnigṛhītaṁ kakudminam | visṛjyovāca gaccheti na tvāṁ hanmi vṛṣeśvara

Sanatkumara said: Then Samvarta, the Fire, released the captured bull-lord, saying, 'Go; O lord of bulls, I shall not slay you.'

Verse 55 (skanda.8.33.55)

शक्तस्तवाहं दहने ह्यशक्तो मे भवान् वधे । तथाप्यहं न गर्जामि गर्जितैः किं बलीयसाम्

śaktastavāhaṁ dahane hyaśakto me bhavān vadhe | tathāpyahaṁ na garjāmi garjitaiḥ kiṁ balīyasām

I am capable of burning you, though you are incapable of slaying me; yet I do not boast -- what use is boasting for the truly mighty?

Verse 56 (skanda.8.33.56)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । विसृज्य वृषभं वह्निराशु यातः स्वमालयम् । वृषभोपि जगामेव दुःखशोकाभिसंवृतः

sanatkumāra uvāca | visṛjya vṛṣabhaṁ vahnirāśu yātaḥ svamālayam | vṛṣabhopi jagāmeva duḥkhaśokābhisaṁvṛtaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Having released the bull, the Fire swiftly returned to his own abode; the Bull too departed, overwhelmed with grief and sorrow.

Verse 57 (skanda.8.33.57)

सोवमानेन तेजस्वी महोक्षः सुरभीसुतः । दुःखेन चाभिसन्नात्मा जगामैवं विचिन्तयन्

sovamānena tejasvī mahokṣaḥ surabhīsutaḥ | duḥkhena cābhisannātmā jagāmaivaṁ vicintayan

That splendid great bull, son of Surabhi, thus insulted, his mind afflicted with grief, went on his way, pondering thus.

Verse 58 (skanda.8.33.58)

अबलोहं बली वह्निर्येनाहं निकृतस्तथा । जीवितेशेन भूत्वा च नाहं प्राणैर्वियोजितः

abalohaṁ balī vahniryenāhaṁ nikṛtastathā | jīviteśena bhūtvā ca nāhaṁ prāṇairviyojitaḥ

I am weak, and Fire is strong, who thus humiliated me; though he had my life in his hands, he did not part me from my breath.

Verse 59 (skanda.8.33.59)

मोघं मम बल सर्वं तथा चैवाभिगर्जितम् । शरज्जलधरस्येव विहीनस्याद्भिरम्बरे

moghaṁ mama bala sarvaṁ tathā caivābhigarjitam | śarajjaladharasyeva vihīnasyādbhirambare

All my strength and my roaring boast have proved as vain as an autumn cloud in the sky, drained of its waters.

Verse 60 (skanda.8.33.60)

अद्य प्राणानहं त्यक्ष्ये नियतो व्रतमास्थितः । यथा न पुनरेवं मे मानभङ्गो भविष्यति

adya prāṇānahaṁ tyakṣye niyato vratamāsthitaḥ | yathā na punarevaṁ me mānabhaṅgo bhaviṣyati

This day, disciplined and resolved upon my vow, I shall give up my life, so that such humiliation may never befall me again.

Verse 61 (skanda.8.33.61)

शत्रुणा निगृहीतस्य दुर्बलस्य दुरात्मनः । जीवितान्मरणं मन्ये विशिष्टं जीवितेन किम्

śatruṇā nigṛhītasya durbalasya durātmanaḥ | jīvitānmaraṇaṁ manye viśiṣṭaṁ jīvitena kim

For one weak and base of heart, seized by an enemy, I deem death better than life -- what use is such a life?

Verse 62 (skanda.8.33.62)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । स एवं चिन्तयन्नुक्षा वाचं शुश्राव खाच्छुभाम् । सौरभेय न भेतव्यं यद् ब्रवीमि कुरुष्व तत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | sa evaṁ cintayannukṣā vācaṁ śuśrāva khācchubhām | saurabheya na bhetavyaṁ yad bravīmi kuruṣva tat

Sanatkumara said: As the bull pondered thus, he heard an auspicious voice from the sky: 'O son of Surabhi, do not fear; do as I tell you.'

Verse 63 (skanda.8.33.63)

रुद्रं सर्वसुरेशानं सर्वेभ्यो बलवत्तरम् । तं प्रपद्यस्व देवेशं ततो जेष्यसि पावकम्

rudraṁ sarvasureśānaṁ sarvebhyo balavattaram | taṁ prapadyasva deveśaṁ tato jeṣyasi pāvakam

Take refuge in Rudra, lord of all the gods, mightier than all; taking refuge in that Lord of gods, you shall conquer Fire.

Verse 64 (skanda.8.33.64)

स स्रष्टा सर्वभूतानां ब्रह्मादीनां न संशयः । स ते दुःखमिदं सर्वं व्यपनेष्यति भो वृष

sa sraṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṁ brahmādīnāṁ na saṁśayaḥ | sa te duḥkhamidaṁ sarvaṁ vyapaneṣyati bho vṛṣa

He, beyond doubt, is the creator of all beings, including Brahma and the rest; O Bull, he alone shall dispel this entire sorrow of yours.

Verse 65 (skanda.8.33.65)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजाः साध्यस्य सुमहात्मनः । हिमवन्तं गिरिं प्राप्य तताप विपुलं तपः

sanatkumāra uvāca | etacchrutvā mahātejāḥ sādhyasya sumahātmanaḥ | himavantaṁ giriṁ prāpya tatāpa vipulaṁ tapaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Hearing this word of the great, noble Sadhya, that most splendid one went to the Himalayan mountain and performed vast austerity.

Verse 66 (skanda.8.33.66)

तस्य वर्षसहस्रेण तत्परस्य तदाशिषः । भगवान् सर्वभूतेशः साम्बः सगण ऊचिवान्

tasya varṣasahasreṇa tatparasya tadāśiṣaḥ | bhagavān sarvabhūteśaḥ sāmbaḥ sagaṇa ūcivān

After a thousand years of his austerity, intent upon that wish, the Lord of all beings, together with Amba and His hosts, spoke.

Verse 67 (skanda.8.33.67)

देवदेव उवाच । सौरभेय महाभाग तुष्टोस्मि तव पुत्रक । इष्टान् ब्रूहि वरान् वत्स दास्ये तान् सुबहूनपि

devadeva uvāca | saurabheya mahābhāga tuṣṭosmi tava putraka | iṣṭān brūhi varān vatsa dāsye tān subahūnapi

The God of gods said: O most fortunate son of Surabhi, I am pleased with you; O child, ask for the boons you desire, and I shall grant them, however many.

Verse 68 (skanda.8.33.68)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततस्स देवं संदृश्य साम्बं सगणमीश्वरम् । प्रणम्य शिरसा पादौ प्राञ्जलिस्सुसमाहितः

sanatkumāra uvāca | tatassa devaṁ saṁdṛśya sāmbaṁ sagaṇamīśvaram | praṇamya śirasā pādau prāñjalissusamāhitaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Then, beholding the Lord God together with Amba and His hosts, bowing his head to His feet, with joined palms and composed mind, he spoke.

Verse 69 (skanda.8.33.69)

भूयो भूयो निरीक्ष्यैनं प्रणम्य च पुनः पुनः । उवाच तपसोक्षय्यमिच्छेयं वै जगत्पते

bhūyo bhūyo nirīkṣyainaṁ praṇamya ca punaḥ punaḥ | uvāca tapasokṣayyamiccheyaṁ vai jagatpate

Gazing upon Him again and again, bowing repeatedly, he said: 'O Lord of the world, I wish for the imperishable fruit of my austerity.'

Verse 70 (skanda.8.33.70)

बलञ्चानुत्तमं देव योगैश्वर्यन्तथाक्षयम् । त्वदीयो वाहनश्चाहमग्निनैवं विमानितः

balañcānuttamaṁ deva yogaiśvaryantathākṣayam | tvadīyo vāhanaścāhamagninaivaṁ vimānitaḥ

O God, grant me supreme strength and imperishable yogic power; let me become your vehicle, for Fire has thus dishonoured me.

Verse 71 (skanda.8.33.71)

संवर्त्तकानलञ्चैव वडवामुखवासिनम् । द्रष्टुमिच्छामि देवेश निगृहीतं त्वयाव्यय

saṁvarttakānalañcaiva vaḍavāmukhavāsinam | draṣṭumicchāmi deveśa nigṛhītaṁ tvayāvyaya

O Lord of gods, O unchanging one, I wish to see Samvarta, the fire that dwells at Vadavamukha, subdued by you.

Verse 72 (skanda.8.33.72)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । एवमुक्तस्तु तान्दत्त्वा वरान् सत्यवतीसुत । वामं पार्श्वं तथा मृज्य रुद्रमेकं ससर्ज ह

sanatkumāra uvāca | evamuktastu tāndattvā varān satyavatīsuta | vāmaṁ pārśvaṁ tathā mṛjya rudramekaṁ sasarja ha

Sanatkumara said: O son of Satyavati, thus addressed, having granted him those boons, the Lord touched his own left side and created a single Rudra.

Verse 73 (skanda.8.33.73)

किरीटमालिनं त्र्यक्षं कुण्डलाङ्गदभूषणम् । महोरस्कं कबचिनं धनुर्हस्तं महाबलम् । बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रं च खङ्गदिव्यास्त्रधारिणम्

kirīṭamālinaṁ tryakṣaṁ kuṇḍalāṅgadabhūṣaṇam | mahoraskaṁ kabacinaṁ dhanurhastaṁ mahābalam | baddhagodhāṅgulitraṁ ca khaṅgadivyāstradhāriṇam

Crowned and garlanded, three-eyed, adorned with earrings and armlets, broad-chested, armored, bow in hand, mighty, wearing the finger-guard of iguana-hide, bearing sword and divine weapons.

Verse 74 (skanda.8.33.74)

तमाह रुद्रं गच्छेति वडवामुखवासिनम् । संवर्त्तकानलं बद्ध्वा विस्फुरन्तमिहानय

tamāha rudraṁ gaccheti vaḍavāmukhavāsinam | saṁvarttakānalaṁ baddhvā visphurantamihānaya

He said to that Rudra: 'Go, and bind the blazing Samvarta fire that dwells at Vadavamukha, and bring him here.'

Verse 75 (skanda.8.33.75)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । वन्दित्वा चरणौ तस्य सोमस्य गणनायकः । जगाम सागरं वेगाद् ददर्श च हुताशनम्

sanatkumāra uvāca | vanditvā caraṇau tasya somasya gaṇanāyakaḥ | jagāma sāgaraṁ vegād dadarśa ca hutāśanam

Sanatkumara said: Having bowed at the feet of that Soma, the lord of the hosts sped swiftly to the ocean and beheld the fire.

Verse 76 (skanda.8.33.76)

स युद्धं बलवत् कृत्वा सुघोरं लोमहर्षणम् । संवर्त्तकानलं बद्ध्वा देवपार्श्वमुपानयत्

sa yuddhaṁ balavat kṛtvā sughoraṁ lomaharṣaṇam | saṁvarttakānalaṁ baddhvā devapārśvamupānayat

Fighting a fierce and hair-raising battle with great force, he bound the Samvarta fire and brought him before the God.

Verse 77 (skanda.8.33.77)

व्यास उवाच । कीदृक् तद्युद्धमभवत् विट्पतेः पावकस्य च । एतदिच्छामि विज्ञातुं वद त्वं वदतां वर

vyāsa uvāca | kīdṛk tadyuddhamabhavat viṭpateḥ pāvakasya ca | etadicchāmi vijñātuṁ vada tvaṁ vadatāṁ vara

Vyasa said: What manner of battle was that between the lord of the host and Fire? O best of speakers, this I wish to know -- tell me.

Verse 78 (skanda.8.33.78)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । स गत्वा गणपः क्रुद्धः संवर्त्तकमथानलम् । उवाच क्रोधरक्ताक्षस्तदा वचनमर्थवत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | sa gatvā gaṇapaḥ kruddhaḥ saṁvarttakamathānalam | uvāca krodharaktākṣastadā vacanamarthavat

Sanatkumara said: That lord of hosts, enraged, went to Samvarta the fire, and with eyes reddened by anger spoke this meaningful word.

Verse 79 (skanda.8.33.79)

गणप उवाच । स्वामी सर्वस्य जगतो देवश्चन्द्रार्धभूषणः । आज्ञापयति वह्ने त्वां वृषमेनं प्रसादय

gaṇapa uvāca | svāmī sarvasya jagato devaścandrārdhabhūṣaṇaḥ | ājñāpayati vahne tvāṁ vṛṣamenaṁ prasādaya

The lord of hosts said: O Fire, the Lord of all the world, adorned with the crescent moon, commands you: appease this Bull.

Verse 80 (skanda.8.33.80)

प्रणातोस्मीति तं ब्रूहि वृषभं ससुहृज्जनः । निदेशे तिष्ठ चैवास्य यत् कर्तव्यं च तत्कुरु

praṇātosmīti taṁ brūhi vṛṣabhaṁ sasuhṛjjanaḥ | nideśe tiṣṭha caivāsya yat kartavyaṁ ca tatkuru

Say to that Bull, together with his kinsfolk, 'I bow to you'; remain under his command, and do whatever must be done.

Verse 81 (skanda.8.33.81)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । एवमुक्तोनलः श्रुत्वा देवदेवस्य तद्वचः । उवाच नातिसंहष्टस्त्विदं वचनमर्थवत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | evamuktonalaḥ śrutvā devadevasya tadvacaḥ | uvāca nātisaṁhaṣṭastvidaṁ vacanamarthavat

Sanatkumara said: Thus addressed, hearing this word of the God of gods, Fire, not altogether pleased, spoke this meaningful reply.

Verse 82 (skanda.8.33.82)

अनल उवाच । नियोज्यो देवदेवस्य तस्यैवाहं सदानुगः । न च मां स नियुक्त्वेह योक्ष्यतेन्यत्र कर्हिचित्

anala uvāca | niyojyo devadevasya tasyaivāhaṁ sadānugaḥ | na ca māṁ sa niyuktveha yokṣyatenyatra karhicit

Fire said: I am ever the follower of the God of gods alone, to be appointed only by him; he will never assign me elsewhere without first appointing me here.

Verse 83 (skanda.8.33.83)

गच्छ मद्वचनाद् ब्रूहि भगवन्तं त्रिलोचनम् । यदि मां वक्ष्यति पुनः करिष्येहं ततस्तथा

gaccha madvacanād brūhi bhagavantaṁ trilocanam | yadi māṁ vakṣyati punaḥ kariṣyehaṁ tatastathā

Go, and on my word tell the three-eyed Lord: if he himself speaks to me again, then I shall act accordingly.

Verse 84 (skanda.8.33.84)

गणेश्वर उवाच । बालिशा वत ये प्राज्ञा बलज्ञानबहिष्कृताः । त एवमुक्ता गच्छन्ति यथा मां त्वं प्रभाषसे

gaṇeśvara uvāca | bāliśā vata ye prājñā balajñānabahiṣkṛtāḥ | ta evamuktā gacchanti yathā māṁ tvaṁ prabhāṣase

The lord of hosts said: Alas, those who, though wise, are devoid of understanding of true strength are like fools; when so addressed, they go their way just as you now speak to me.

Verse 85 (skanda.8.33.85)

सकृदाज्ञा बलवतां सकृत् प्रभवतामपि । दूतश्चापि स वै श्रेष्ठो यो भवेदर्थसाधकः

sakṛdājñā balavatāṁ sakṛt prabhavatāmapi | dūtaścāpi sa vai śreṣṭho yo bhavedarthasādhakaḥ

The command of the mighty is given but once, and that of the powerful too but once; and that messenger alone is best who accomplishes the task.

Verse 86 (skanda.8.33.86)

सोहं बलवता तेन लोककर्त्रा पिनाकिना । दूतः सर्वार्थसिद्ध्यर्थं प्रहितो बलवानिह

sohaṁ balavatā tena lokakartrā pinākinā | dūtaḥ sarvārthasiddhyarthaṁ prahito balavāniha

I, this mighty one, have been sent here by that powerful maker of worlds, the wielder of the Pinaka, to accomplish this task fully.

Verse 87 (skanda.8.33.87)

न चेद्वचो मे कर्तासि बद्ध्वा त्वाहन्ततोद्य वै । विस्फुरन्तं महापाशैर्नेष्यामि द्युभृतोन्तिकम्

na cedvaco me kartāsi baddhvā tvāhantatodya vai | visphurantaṁ mahāpāśairneṣyāmi dyubhṛtontikam

If you will not do as I say, then this very day I shall bind you, blazing as you are, with mighty nooses and drag you before the bearer of the sky.

Verse 88 (skanda.8.33.88)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । स एवमुक्तस्तेजस्वी क्रोधदीप्तानलेक्षणः । गणपं प्रति दुद्राव तिष्ठतिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्

sanatkumāra uvāca | sa evamuktastejasvī krodhadīptānalekṣaṇaḥ | gaṇapaṁ prati dudrāva tiṣṭhatiṣṭheti cābravīt

Sanatkumara said: Thus addressed, that splendid one, his eyes blazing with fury, rushed at the lord of hosts, crying, 'Stand, stand!'

Verse 89 (skanda.8.33.89)

तमापतन्तं वेगेन पर्जन्यास्त्रेण सोस्त्रवित् । ताडयामास बलवान् स प्रजज्वाल वेगवान्

tamāpatantaṁ vegena parjanyāstreṇa sostravit | tāḍayāmāsa balavān sa prajajvāla vegavān

As he charged with great speed, the strong one drenched him with the Parjanya weapon and struck him; and that swift one blazed up all the more.

Verse 90 (skanda.8.33.90)

ज्वलन्तं तं तदाभ्यासमागतं क्रोधमूच्छितम् । अशन्यस्त्रेण महता स जघान स्तनान्तरे

jvalantaṁ taṁ tadābhyāsamāgataṁ krodhamūcchitam | aśanyastreṇa mahatā sa jaghāna stanāntare

That blazing one, come close, senseless with rage, he struck full in the chest with the mighty thunderbolt weapon.

Verse 91 (skanda.8.33.91)

अभ्याहतस्ततोस्त्रेण वेगवानपि मूर्च्छितः । तस्थौ मुहूर्त्तं संविग्नो विधूमो दहनेश्वरः

abhyāhatastatostreṇa vegavānapi mūrcchitaḥ | tasthau muhūrttaṁ saṁvigno vidhūmo dahaneśvaraḥ

Struck by that weapon, the swift lord of fire, though powerful, was stunned senseless, and stood motionless for a moment, agitated and without smoke.

Verse 92 (skanda.8.33.92)

ततस्तं रुद्रपाशेन बबन्ध करयोस्तदा । विस्फुरन्तं महावह्निं गणपः क्रोधमूर्छितः

tatastaṁ rudrapāśena babandha karayostadā | visphurantaṁ mahāvahniṁ gaṇapaḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ

Then that lord of hosts, blinded with fury, bound the blazing great Fire's two hands with the noose of Rudra.

Verse 93 (skanda.8.33.93)

तं बद्धं पाशवर्येण पतितं वीक्ष्य चैव हि । तस्य पुत्रसुहृद्वर्गा विविधायुधपाणयः

taṁ baddhaṁ pāśavaryeṇa patitaṁ vīkṣya caiva hi | tasya putrasuhṛdvargā vividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ

Seeing him bound by that finest of nooses and fallen, his sons and kinsmen, weapons of many kinds in hand, rushed forth.

Verse 94 (skanda.8.33.94)

दुद्रुवुर्गणपं क्रुद्धाः शतशोथ सहस्रशः । तानप्यसौ विनिर्जित्य गणपस्तं हुताशनम्

dudruvurgaṇapaṁ kruddhāḥ śataśotha sahasraśaḥ | tānapyasau vinirjitya gaṇapastaṁ hutāśanam

In their hundreds and thousands, enraged, they rushed upon the lord of hosts; but he, having vanquished them too, led that Fire onward.

Verse 95 (skanda.8.33.95)

उपनिन्ये हरायाशु पशुं मेध्यमिवाध्वरे । तमानीतं महादेवः संप्रेक्ष्यार्णवभोजनम्

upaninye harāyāśu paśuṁ medhyamivādhvare | tamānītaṁ mahādevaḥ saṁprekṣyārṇavabhojanam

He brought him swiftly before Hara, like a sacrificial victim led to the rite. Mahadeva, beholding that ocean-devouring one thus brought before him.

Verse 96 (skanda.8.33.96)

उवाच वृषभं ब्रूहि किमस्य क्रियतामिति । स तं कृपणमालक्ष्य महोक्षा दीनचेतसम्

uvāca vṛṣabhaṁ brūhi kimasya kriyatāmiti | sa taṁ kṛpaṇamālakṣya mahokṣā dīnacetasam

Said to the Bull: 'Tell me, what should be done with him?' That great bull, beholding him pitiable and downcast in spirit.

Verse 97 (skanda.8.33.97)

प्रणम्य शिरसा पादाविदमाह कृताञ्जलिः । भगवन् देवदेवेश सर्वलोकमहेश्वर

praṇamya śirasā pādāvidamāha kṛtāñjaliḥ | bhagavan devadeveśa sarvalokamaheśvara

Bowing his head to His feet, with joined palms, he said: 'O Lord, O ruler of the gods, O great Lord of all worlds.'

Verse 98 (skanda.8.33.98)

दृष्टमेतत्तव विभो माहात्म्यं सदसस्पते । दृष्टोयं कृपणश्चापि ह्यबलश्च महाबल

dṛṣṭametattava vibho māhātmyaṁ sadasaspate | dṛṣṭoyaṁ kṛpaṇaścāpi hyabalaśca mahābala

O mighty one, O lord of the assembly, I have witnessed this your greatness; and I, O great one, have now seen him pitiable and powerless too.

Verse 99 (skanda.8.33.99)

विसृज्यतां सुरश्रेष्ठ हत एष न संशयः । पुत्रा ह्यस्य हताः सर्वे सुहृदश्चैव सर्वशः

visṛjyatāṁ suraśreṣṭha hata eṣa na saṁśayaḥ | putrā hyasya hatāḥ sarve suhṛdaścaiva sarvaśaḥ

O best of gods, let him be released -- he is already defeated, without doubt; all his sons and all his kinsmen have been slain.

Verse 100 (skanda.8.33.100)

दीनस्यास्य न मे देव वध इष्टो विमुच्यताम् । एतद्वचो महेशो वै वृषभस्याभिभाषितम्

dīnasyāsya na me deva vadha iṣṭo vimucyatām | etadvaco maheśo vai vṛṣabhasyābhibhāṣitam

O God, I do not wish for this humbled one's death; let him be set free. The Great Lord thus heard the Bull's plea.

Verse 101 (skanda.8.33.101)

श्रुत्वा तुष्टः प्रहस्यैनं दहनं व्यसृजत् तदा । रुद्रं तञ्च जराशोकजन्ममृत्युविर्जितम्

śrutvā tuṣṭaḥ prahasyainaṁ dahanaṁ vyasṛjat tadā | rudraṁ tañca jarāśokajanmamṛtyuvirjitam

Hearing this, pleased, and smiling, He released the Fire; and that Rudra he freed forever from old age, grief, birth, and death.

Verse 102 (skanda.8.33.102)

गणेश्वरपतिं कृत्वा द्वीपमस्मै ददत् प्रभुः । मनोरमणमित्येव नाम्ना ख्यातं महर्द्धिमत्

gaṇeśvarapatiṁ kṛtvā dvīpamasmai dadat prabhuḥ | manoramaṇamityeva nāmnā khyātaṁ maharddhimat

Making him the lord of the lords of hosts, the Lord bestowed on him an island renowned by the name Manoramana, endowed with great splendour.

Verse 103 (skanda.8.33.103)

दिव्यं कामगमं व्यास भवनैरुपशोभितम् । जाम्बूनदमयैः शुभ्रैः सर्वकामसमन्वितैः

divyaṁ kāmagamaṁ vyāsa bhavanairupaśobhitam | jāmbūnadamayaiḥ śubhraiḥ sarvakāmasamanvitaiḥ

O Vyasa, that divine island, movable at will, was adorned with radiant mansions of gold, and endowed with everything one could desire.

Verse 104 (skanda.8.33.104)

तस्मिन् काले तदा देवाः सर्वे ब्रह्मपुरस्सराः । देवदेवं समागम्य वाक्यमूचुर्यथार्थवत्

tasmin kāle tadā devāḥ sarve brahmapurassarāḥ | devadevaṁ samāgamya vākyamūcuryathārthavat

At that time all the gods, with Brahma at their head, came together before the God of gods and spoke this truthful word.

Verse 105 (skanda.8.33.105)

भगवन् देवतारिघ्न वृषोयं देवसत्तम । त्वया ह्यध्यासितः पूर्वं नादेनापूरयद्बली

bhagavan devatārighna vṛṣoyaṁ devasattama | tvayā hyadhyāsitaḥ pūrvaṁ nādenāpūrayadbalī

O Lord, slayer of the gods' foes, O best of gods, this Bull, upon whom you once sat enthroned, used to fill everything with his mighty roar.

Verse 106 (skanda.8.33.106)

त्रैलोक्यमखिलं दर्पादस्वस्थं कृतवान् प्रभो । वेगेन च दिशः सर्वा विमानैः सह भूतप

trailokyamakhilaṁ darpādasvasthaṁ kṛtavān prabho | vegena ca diśaḥ sarvā vimānaiḥ saha bhūtapa

O Lord, by his pride he threw the entire triple world into disorder; O ruler of beings, with his speed he disturbed all the quarters together with their aerial cars.

Verse 107 (skanda.8.33.107)

भ्रामयन् त्रिदशान् नादाद् गगने संचचार ह । अधुना वरलब्धश्च अस्मान् भूयस्तथैव च

bhrāmayan tridaśān nādād gagane saṁcacāra ha | adhunā varalabdhaśca asmān bhūyastathaiva ca

Whirling the gods about with his roar, he wandered through the sky; now, having gained this boon, he shall trouble us likewise once more.

Verse 108 (skanda.8.33.108)

यथा न कुरुते देव उपायः स विधीयताम् । त्वन्नो गतिश्च देवेश शरणं चैव भूतप । सदा भयाभिभूतानां त्वं त्राता सर्वशः प्रभो

yathā na kurute deva upāyaḥ sa vidhīyatām | tvanno gatiśca deveśa śaraṇaṁ caiva bhūtapa | sadā bhayābhibhūtānāṁ tvaṁ trātā sarvaśaḥ prabho

O God, let a remedy be devised so that he does not do this again. O Lord of gods, O ruler of beings, you alone are our refuge and our resort; O Lord, you are ever the protector of all who are overcome with fear.

Verse 109 (skanda.8.33.109)

देवदेव उवाच । यथा भयं न भवति यथा स्वस्थाश्च नित्यशः । लोका भवन्ति सर्वे वै तथाहं विदधामि वः

devadeva uvāca | yathā bhayaṁ na bhavati yathā svasthāśca nityaśaḥ | lokā bhavanti sarve vai tathāhaṁ vidadhāmi vaḥ

The God of gods said: In such a way that there is no more fear, and that all the worlds remain ever untroubled -- thus shall I arrange it for you.

Verse 110 (skanda.8.33.110)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततस्स भगवान् व्यास देवदेवो महाद्युतिः । असृजद् वरदानाच्च गणेशं चारुकुण्डलम्

sanatkumāra uvāca | tatassa bhagavān vyāsa devadevo mahādyutiḥ | asṛjad varadānācca gaṇeśaṁ cārukuṇḍalam

Sanatkumara said: O Vyasa, then that most splendid God of gods, together with the granting of the boon, created a lord of hosts adorned with beautiful earrings.

Verse 111 (skanda.8.33.111)

आकर्णाद् दारितास्यं च महाकायं महाबलम् । महापरिघबाहुं च वज्रसंहननं दृढम्

ākarṇād dāritāsyaṁ ca mahākāyaṁ mahābalam | mahāparighabāhuṁ ca vajrasaṁhananaṁ dṛḍham

His mouth split wide to his ears, of vast frame and great strength, his arms like massive iron bars, his body firm as adamant.

Verse 112 (skanda.8.33.112)

महादंष्ट्रं महोरस्कं महाखड्गधनुर्धरम । दीप्ताङ्गारकनेत्रं च त्रिनेत्रं कवचोज्ज्वलम्

mahādaṁṣṭraṁ mahoraskaṁ mahākhaḍgadhanurdharama | dīptāṅgārakanetraṁ ca trinetraṁ kavacojjvalam

Great-tusked, broad-chested, bearing a mighty sword and bow, his eyes like blazing embers, three-eyed, radiant in his armour.

Verse 113 (skanda.8.33.113)

बिभ्रत्तं चाक्षयेत्यर्थमिषुधी चर्मवाससम् । शरमेकेन हस्तेन धनुरेकेन बिभ्रतम्

bibhrattaṁ cākṣayetyarthamiṣudhī carmavāsasam | śaramekena hastena dhanurekena bibhratam

Bearing two inexhaustible quivers, clad in a garment of hide, holding an arrow in one hand and a bow in the other.

Verse 114 (skanda.8.33.114)

ग्रहनक्षत्रचित्रेण तडित्सूर्यावभासिता । उत्तरीयेण वियता भास्वन्तं मेरुकूटवत्

grahanakṣatracitreṇa taḍitsūryāvabhāsitā | uttarīyeṇa viyatā bhāsvantaṁ merukūṭavat

Adorned as though painted with planets and stars, radiant as lightning and sun, his upper garment like the very sky, shining like the peak of Mount Meru.

Verse 115 (skanda.8.33.115)

प्रभाकरेति सुव्यक्तमामन्त्र्य भगवानिदम् । अब्रवीत्सर्वदेवानां समक्षं तं प्रभाकरम्

prabhākareti suvyaktamāmantrya bhagavānidam | abravītsarvadevānāṁ samakṣaṁ taṁ prabhākaram

Addressing him distinctly by the name Prabhakara, the Lord spoke thus to that Prabhakara in the presence of all the gods.

Verse 116 (skanda.8.33.116)

प्रभाकर मयाज्ञप्तस्त्वं देवानां गुणाकर । परमैश्वर्यसंयुक्तो वृषवेगं निवारय । निवासार्थञ्च दिव्यन्तमिन्द्रद्वीपं ददामि ते

prabhākara mayājñaptastvaṁ devānāṁ guṇākara | paramaiśvaryasaṁyukto vṛṣavegaṁ nivāraya | nivāsārthañca divyantamindradvīpaṁ dadāmi te

O Prabhakara, treasury of virtues among the gods, I command you: endowed with supreme majesty, restrain the Bull's fury. And for your dwelling I grant you the divine island of Indra.

Verse 117 (skanda.8.33.117)

ज्योत्स्ना भवित्री पत्नी ते तथा चैवाजरामरः । भविष्यसि मयायज्ञप्तो महागणपतिर्मम

jyotsnā bhavitrī patnī te tathā caivājarāmaraḥ | bhaviṣyasi mayāyajñapto mahāgaṇapatirmama

Jyotsna shall become your wife, and you shall be ageless and deathless; appointed by me, you shall become my great lord of hosts.

Verse 118 (skanda.8.33.118)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततस्तं देवतास्सर्वाः प्रणम्य ब्रह्मणा सह । जग्मुः स्वानि क्षयानि स्म देवोपि वृषवान् वभौ

sanatkumāra uvāca | tatastaṁ devatāssarvāḥ praṇamya brahmaṇā saha | jagmuḥ svāni kṣayāni sma devopi vṛṣavān vabhau

Sanatkumara said: Then all the gods, together with Brahma, bowed to him and departed to their own abodes; and the Lord too shone forth, now mounted upon the Bull.

Verse 119 (skanda.8.33.119)

मुखतोर्द्धं वृषो धर्मो जघनं यज्ञ उच्यते । चक्षुषी चन्द्रसूयौ च ब्रह्मा मूर्धानमाश्रितः

mukhatorddhaṁ vṛṣo dharmo jaghanaṁ yajña ucyate | cakṣuṣī candrasūyau ca brahmā mūrdhānamāśritaḥ

The upper part of the Bull's face is called Dharma, and his hindquarters are called Yajna; his two eyes are the moon and sun, and Brahma dwells in his crown.

Verse 120 (skanda.8.33.120)

जिह्वायां तस्य वरुणो वायुरन्तश्चरः स्वयम् । पादान् विष्णुर्भगश्चैव पूषा शक्रश्च संस्थिताः

jihvāyāṁ tasya varuṇo vāyurantaścaraḥ svayam | pādān viṣṇurbhagaścaiva pūṣā śakraśca saṁsthitāḥ

In his tongue dwells Varuna, and Vayu himself moves within him; in his feet abide Vishnu, Bhaga, Pushan, and Shakra.

Verse 121 (skanda.8.33.121)

जंघाः शेषास्तथा दित्या ऊरूश्चैव समाश्रिताः । रुद्राः कर्णौ च नासाञ्च ग्रीवोष्ठौ हनुमेव च

jaṁghāḥ śeṣāstathā dityā ūrūścaiva samāśritāḥ | rudrāḥ karṇau ca nāsāñca grīvoṣṭhau hanumeva ca

In his shins dwell Shesha and the Daityas, and likewise in his thighs; the Rudras abide in his ears, nose, neck, lips, and chin.

Verse 122 (skanda.8.33.122)

आयुधानि खुरास्तस्य चक्रवज्रौ च शृङ्गयोः । अपाने च स्वयं मित्रः पुच्छं दानानि सर्वशः

āyudhāni khurāstasya cakravajrau ca śṛṅgayoḥ | apāne ca svayaṁ mitraḥ pucchaṁ dānāni sarvaśaḥ

His hooves are his weapons; the discus and thunderbolt reside in his two horns. In his lower region dwells Mitra himself, and in his tail abide all forms of giving.

Verse 123 (skanda.8.33.123)

अस्थीनि पर्वताः सर्वे पुरीषं श्रीरभूच्छुभा । मूत्रं चास्याभवद् दिव्यममृतं व्यास पावनम्

asthīni parvatāḥ sarve purīṣaṁ śrīrabhūcchubhā | mūtraṁ cāsyābhavad divyamamṛtaṁ vyāsa pāvanam

All the mountains are his bones; his dung became the auspicious Shri. And, O Vyasa, his urine became the divine, purifying nectar.

Verse 124 (skanda.8.33.124)

रोमाणि ऋषयस्सर्वे नक्षत्राणि च सर्वशः । ग्रहास्तस्याभवन् व्यास सन्धयः शुभदर्शनाः

romāṇi ṛṣayassarve nakṣatrāṇi ca sarvaśaḥ | grahāstasyābhavan vyāsa sandhayaḥ śubhadarśanāḥ

His body hairs are all the sages and all the constellations; O Vyasa, his joints became the beautiful-visaged planets.

Verse 125 (skanda.8.33.125)

इष्टयो वेदयज्ञाश्च मन्त्राः स्तोत्रा फलानि च । अभवंस्तस्य मांसानि रुधिरं सरिदर्णवाः

iṣṭayo vedayajñāśca mantrāḥ stotrā phalāni ca | abhavaṁstasya māṁsāni rudhiraṁ saridarṇavāḥ

Sacrificial rites, the Vedas, sacrifices, mantras, hymns, and their fruits became his flesh, and the rivers and oceans became his blood.

Verse 126 (skanda.8.33.126)

सप्तलोकं मुखं ह्यासीत् तस्याप्रतिमतेजसः । हस्ता मरीचयश्चैव मज्जा औषध्य एव च

saptalokaṁ mukhaṁ hyāsīt tasyāpratimatejasaḥ | hastā marīcayaścaiva majjā auṣadhya eva ca

The seven worlds were the mouth of that one of matchless splendour; his hands became the sun's rays, and his marrow became the medicinal herbs.

Verse 127 (skanda.8.33.127)

मन्त्रभूताश्च पशवः स्नायुश्च वीरुधः । वल्ल्योथ वृक्षगुल्माश्च तथैवान्ये नगाः शुभाः

mantrabhūtāśca paśavaḥ snāyuśca vīrudhaḥ | vallyotha vṛkṣagulmāśca tathaivānye nagāḥ śubhāḥ

Cattle became embodiments of the sacred mantras, and his sinews became the creeping plants; vines, trees, shrubs, and likewise other blessed mountains arose from him.

Verse 128 (skanda.8.33.128)

नागास्तस्याभवन् नाड्यो वसवः शुक्रसंचयः । आमपक्वाशयौ तस्य तौ देवावश्विनौ स्मृतौ

nāgāstasyābhavan nāḍyo vasavaḥ śukrasaṁcayaḥ | āmapakvāśayau tasya tau devāvaśvinau smṛtau

His veins became the serpent-deities; the Vasus arose from the gathering of his vital essence. His two digestive receptacles, raw and ripened, are remembered as the twin Ashvin gods.

Verse 129 (skanda.8.33.129)

मेघास्तस्याभवन् त्वक्च तडिन्माला ... यक्षा गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा

meghāstasyābhavan tvakca taḍinmālā ... yakṣā gandharvāpsarasastathā

His skin became the clouds, and a garland of lightning [a portion of this verse is lost in the source manuscript -- a genuine lacuna] ... and the Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Apsarases likewise arose from him.

Verse 130 (skanda.8.33.130)

शिरा धमन्योथ मदो दर्पाश्चैवाभिजज्ञिरे । मानुषा मातरश्चैव भूतानि विविधानि च

śirā dhamanyotha mado darpāścaivābhijajñire | mānuṣā mātaraścaiva bhūtāni vividhāni ca

From his veins and arteries arose intoxication and pride, and from him too were born humans, the Mother goddesses, and beings of every kind.

Verse 131 (skanda.8.33.131)

रोमकूपाणि तस्यासन् वृषभस्य महात्मनः । एवं स भगवान् देवः परमैश्वर्यसंयुतः । सौरभेयो महादेवः सर्वदेवमयोभवत्

romakūpāṇi tasyāsan vṛṣabhasya mahātmanaḥ | evaṁ sa bhagavān devaḥ paramaiśvaryasaṁyutaḥ | saurabheyo mahādevaḥ sarvadevamayobhavat

Such were the pores of that great-souled Bull's hide, whence the rest arose. Thus that divine, most majestic son of Surabhi, Mahadeva, became one embodying all the gods.

Verse 132 (skanda.8.33.132)

य इदं सौरभेयस्य जन्म कर्म च तत्त्वतः । माहात्म्यमखिलं चैव शृणुयाद्वा पठेत वा

ya idaṁ saurabheyasya janma karma ca tattvataḥ | māhātmyamakhilaṁ caiva śṛṇuyādvā paṭheta vā

Whoever hears or recites, in its true nature, this account of the birth, deeds, and entire glory of the son of Surabhi.

Verse 133 (skanda.8.33.133)

नित्यं शुचिरदीनात्मा सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते । मृतश्च कालेकाले वा रुद्रलोकमवाप्नुयात्

nityaṁ śuciradīnātmā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate | mṛtaśca kālekāle vā rudralokamavāpnuyāt

He becomes ever pure and undespairing in spirit, freed from all sins, and upon dying, at whatever time, attains the world of Rudra.

Verse 134 (skanda.8.33.134)

नेदं शठाय दातव्यं श्राव्यं वापि कथंचन । न नास्तिकाय दुष्टाय तथा वा पापकर्मणे

nedaṁ śaṭhāya dātavyaṁ śrāvyaṁ vāpi kathaṁcana | na nāstikāya duṣṭāya tathā vā pāpakarmaṇe

This should never be given, nor in any way recited, to a rogue; nor to the atheist, the wicked, or the sinful of deed.

Verse 135 (skanda.8.33.135)

इदं पुत्राय शिष्याय धार्मिकाय महात्मने । देयं श्राव्यञ्च शुचये गुह्यमेतत् सनातनम्

idaṁ putrāya śiṣyāya dhārmikāya mahātmane | deyaṁ śrāvyañca śucaye guhyametat sanātanam

This eternal secret should be given and recited only to a son, a disciple, one who is righteous, great-souled, and pure.

Verse 136 (skanda.8.33.136)

यो लोकवेदप्रभवेन तेन सर्वार्थसिद्धेन महाबलेन । यात्यम्बुदाम्भोनिधिगर्जितेन स वोस्तु नित्यं सुमना महेशः

yo lokavedaprabhavena tena sarvārthasiddhena mahābalena | yātyambudāmbhonidhigarjitena sa vostu nityaṁ sumanā maheśaḥ

May that Great Lord, who journeys upon him -- born of world and Veda, all-accomplishing, mighty, roaring like cloud and ocean -- ever be gracious of mind towards you.
