Chapter 11All chaptersChapter 13

Verse 1 (vishnu.1.12.1)

śrīparāśara uvāca niśamyaitad aśeṣeṇa maitreya nṛpateḥ sutaḥ nirjagāma vanāt tasmāt praṇipatya sa tān ṛṣīn

Parashara said: Having heard all this, O Maitreya, the king's son, bowing to those sages, went forth from that forest.

Verse 2 (vishnu.1.12.2)

kṛtakṛtyam ivātmānaṁ manyamānas tato dvija madhusaṁjñaṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ jagāma yamunātaṭam

Considering himself as if his purpose were already accomplished, O twice-born, he arrived at the greatly sacred bank of the Yamuna known as Madhu.

Verse 3 (vishnu.1.12.3)

punaś ca madhusaṁjñena daityenādhiṣṭhitaṁ yataḥ tato madhuvanaṁ nāmnā khyātam atra mahītale

Because it had once been inhabited by the Daitya named Madhu, that place became famed upon this earth by the name Madhuvana.

Verse 4 (vishnu.1.12.4)

hatvā ca lavaṇaṁ rakṣo madhuputraṁ mahābalam śatrughno madhurāṁ nāma purīṁ yatra cakāra vai

And there, having slain the mighty Rakshasa Lavana, son of Madhu, Shatrughna founded a city named Mathura.

Verse 5 (vishnu.1.12.5)

yatra vai devadevasya sāṁnidhyaṁ harimedhasaḥ sarvapāpahare tasmiṁs tapas tīrthe cakāra saḥ

There, where the blessed lord Harimedhas is ever present, at that ford which destroys every sin, he performed his austerity.

Verse 6 (vishnu.1.12.6)

marīcimiśrair munibhir yathoddiṣṭam abhūt tathā ātmany aśeṣadeveśaṁ sthitaṁ viṣṇum amanyata

Just as instructed by the sage Marichi and the others, so he did; he held Vishnu, lord of all the gods, fixed within his own self.

Verse 7 (vishnu.1.12.7)

ananyacetasas tasya dhyāyato bhagavān hariḥ sarvabhūtagato vipra sarvabhāvagato 'bhavat

As he meditated with mind fixed on nothing else, the blessed Hari, O brahmin, became present within all beings and every state of being.

Verse 8 (vishnu.1.12.8)

manasy avasthite tasya viṣṇau maitreya yoginaḥ na śaśāka dharā bhāram udvoḍhuṁ bhūtadhāriṇī

O Maitreya, when Vishnu had thus become fixed in that yogi's mind, the earth, bearer of all creatures, grew unable to sustain his weight.

Verse 9 (vishnu.1.12.9)

vāmapādasthite tasmin nanāmārdhena medinī dvitīyaṁ ca nanāmārdhaṁ kṣiter dakṣiṇataḥ sthite

When he stood upon his left foot, half the earth bowed down; and when he stood upon his right, the other half bowed down as well.

Verse 10 (vishnu.1.12.10)

pādāṅguṣṭhena saṁpīḍya yadā sa vasudhāṁ sthitaḥ tadā sā vasudhā vipra cacāla saha parvataiḥ

When, pressing down with his big toe, he stood upon the earth, then, O brahmin, that earth shook together with its mountains.

Verse 11 (vishnu.1.12.11)

nadyo nadāḥ samudrāś ca saṁkṣobhaṁ paramaṁ yayuḥ tatkṣobhād amarāḥ kṣobhaṁ paraṁ jagmur mahāmune

Rivers, streams, and oceans were thrown into extreme turmoil; and from that very turmoil, O great sage, the immortals too fell into the utmost agitation.

Verse 12 (vishnu.1.12.12)

yāmā nāma tadā devā maitreya paramākulāḥ indreṇa saha saṁmantrya dhyānabhaṅgaṁ pracakramuḥ

The gods named Yamas, O Maitreya, greatly disturbed, consulted with Indra and set out to break his meditation.

Verse 13 (vishnu.1.12.13)

kūṣmāṇḍā vividhai rūpair mahendreṇa mahāmune samādhibhaṅgam atyantam ārabdhāḥ kartum āturāḥ

The Kushmanda spirits, in various forms, together with mighty Indra, O great sage, eagerly set about the attempt to shatter his deep concentration.

Verse 14 (vishnu.1.12.14)

sunītir nāma tanmātā sāsrā tatpurataḥ sthitā putreti karuṇāṁ vācam āha māyāmayī tadā

His mother, named Sunīti, illusory and conjured by magic, stood tearfully before him and spoke this piteous speech: 'My son—'

Verse 15 (vishnu.1.12.15)

putrakāsmān nivartasva śarīravyayadāruṇāt nirbandhato mayā labdho bahubhis tvaṁ manorathaiḥ

'My son, turn back from this dreadful undertaking that will destroy your body; with great difficulty, through many hopes, have I obtained you.'

Verse 16 (vishnu.1.12.16)

dīnām ekāṁ parityaktum anāthāṁ na tvam arhasi sapatnīvacanād vatsa agates tvaṁ gatir mama

'You ought not to abandon one wretched, helpless woman; my child, because of a co-wife's words, with no other refuge, you alone are my refuge.'

Verse 17 (vishnu.1.12.17)

kva ca tvaṁ pañcavarṣīyaḥ kva caitad dāruṇaṁ tapaḥ nivartyatāṁ manaḥ kaṣṭān nirbandhāt phalavarjitāt

'Where are you, a five-year-old child, and where this dreadful austerity? Turn your mind back, with effort, from this fruitless, obstinate hardship.'

Verse 18 (vishnu.1.12.18)

kālaḥ krīḍanakānāṁ te tadante 'dhyayanasya ca tataḥ samastabhogānāṁ tadante ceṣyate tapaḥ

'This is your time for play, and after that, for study; then comes the time for all life's enjoyments, and only after that is austerity to be desired.'

Verse 19 (vishnu.1.12.19)

kālaḥ krīḍanakānāṁ yas tava bālasya putraka tasmiṁs tvam itthaṁ tapasi kiṁ nāśāyātmano rataḥ

'My little one, in this time meant for a child's play, why, devoted to such austerity, do you seek to destroy yourself?'

Verse 20 (vishnu.1.12.20)

matprītiḥ paramo dharmo vayovasthākriyākramam anuvartasva mā mohaṁ nivartāsmād adharmataḥ

'My affection is the highest dharma; follow the course proper to your age and stage of life — do not fall into this delusion, this wrong path; turn back from it.'

Verse 21 (vishnu.1.12.21)

parityajati vatsādya yady etan na bhavāṁs tapaḥ tyakṣyāmy aham api prāṇāṁs tato vai paśyatas tava

'My child, if you do not abandon this austerity today, then, before your very eyes, I too shall give up my life.'

Verse 22 (vishnu.1.12.22)

Parashara said: Though he beheld her thus lamenting, her eyes troubled with tears, his mind fixed steadfastly on Vishnu, he did not truly see her.

Verse 23 (vishnu.1.12.23)

vatsa vatsa sughorāṇi rakṣāṁsy etāni bhīṣaṇe vane 'bhyudyataśastrāṇi samāyānty apagamyatām

'Child, child! These most terrible Rakshasas of the fearsome forest, their weapons raised, are coming this way — flee!'

Verse 24 (vishnu.1.12.24)

ity uktvā prayayau sātha rakṣāṁsy āvirbabhus tataḥ abhyudyatograśastrāṇi jvālāmālākulair mukhaiḥ

Having said this, she departed; and then, their mouths ringed with garlands of flame, brandishing fierce weapons, Rakshasas appeared.

Verse 25 (vishnu.1.12.25)

tato nādān atīvogrān rājaputrasya te puraḥ mumucur dīptaśastrāṇi bhrāmayanto niśācarāḥ

Then, before that prince, those night-wanderers, brandishing blazing weapons and whirling them about, let out most terrible roars.

Verse 26 (vishnu.1.12.26)

śivāś ca śataśo neduḥ sajvālakavalair mukhaiḥ trāsāya tasya bālasya yogayuktasya sarvataḥ

Jackals too, their mouths filled with flame, howled by the hundreds, to terrify that child, steadfast in yoga, from every side.

Verse 27 (vishnu.1.12.27)

hanyatāṁ hanyatām eṣa chidyatāṁ chidyatām ayam bhakṣyatāṁ bhakṣyatāṁ cāyam ity ūcus te niśācarāḥ

'Kill him, kill him! Cut him down, cut him down! Devour him, devour him!' — so cried those night-roving demons.

Verse 28 (vishnu.1.12.28)

tato nānāvidhān nādān siṁhoṣṭramakarānanāḥ trāsāya rājaputrasya nedus te rajanīcarāḥ

Then those night-wanderers, their faces like lions, camels, and crocodiles, let out cries of every fearsome kind to terrify the prince.

Verse 29 (vishnu.1.12.29)

rakṣāṁsi tāni te nādāḥ śivās tāny āyudhāni ca govindāsaktacittasya yayur nendriyagocaram

But those Rakshasas, those roars, those jackals, and those weapons never entered the range of his senses at all, so absorbed was his mind in Govinda.

Verse 30 (vishnu.1.12.30)

ekāgracetāḥ satataṁ viṣṇum evātmasaṁśrayam dṛṣṭavān pṛthivīnāthaputro nānyat kathaṁcana

With one-pointed mind, that son of the lord of the earth beheld only Vishnu, his sole refuge as the self, and nothing else whatsoever, ever.

Verse 31 (vishnu.1.12.31)

tataḥ sarvāsu māyāsu vilīnāsu punaḥ surāḥ saṁkṣobhaṁ paramaṁ jagmus tatparābhavaśaṅkitāḥ

Then, when all that illusion had dissolved away, the gods once more fell into the utmost turmoil, fearing their own defeat by him.

Verse 32 (vishnu.1.12.32)

te sametya jagadyonim anādinidhanaṁ harim śaraṇyaṁ śaraṇaṁ yātās tapasā tasya tāpitāḥ

Coming together, scorched by his austerity, they went for refuge to Hari, without beginning or end, the true refuge.

Verse 33 (vishnu.1.12.33)

devā ūcuḥ devadeva jagannātha pareśa puruṣottama dhruvasya tapasā taptās tvāṁ vayaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ

The gods said: 'O god of gods, lord of the world, supreme lord, best of beings! Scorched by Dhruva's austerity, we have come to you for refuge.'

Verse 34 (vishnu.1.12.34)

dine dine kalāśeṣaiḥ śaśāṅkaḥ pūryate yathā tathāyaṁ tapasā deva prayāty ṛddhim aharniśam

'Just as the moon is filled day by day with its remaining digits, so this one, O god, grows in power day and night through his austerity.'

Verse 35 (vishnu.1.12.35)

auttānapāditapasā vayam itthaṁ janārdana bhītās tvāṁ śaraṇaṁ yātās tapasas taṁ nivartaya

'Frightened by the austerity of Uttanapada's son, O Janardana, we have come to you thus for refuge; turn him back from that austerity.'

Verse 36 (vishnu.1.12.36)

'We do not know whether he desires the state of Indra, or of the sun, or has set his heart upon the positions of the lords of wealth, water, and the moon.'

Verse 37 (vishnu.1.12.37)

tad asmākaṁ prasīdeśa hṛdayāc chalyam uddhara uttānapādatanayaṁ tapasaḥ saṁnivartaya

'Therefore, O lord, be gracious to us; draw out this thorn from our hearts — turn the son of Uttanapada back from his austerity.'

Verse 38 (vishnu.1.12.38)

śrībhagavān uvāca nendratvaṁ na ca sūryatvaṁ naivāmbupadhaneśatām prārthayaty eṣa yaṁ kāmaṁ taṁ karomy akhilaṁ surāḥ

Shri Bhagavan said: 'O gods, neither the state of Indra, nor of the sun, nor lordship over the treasuries of water does he seek; whatever he desires, I shall grant it to him in full.'

Verse 39 (vishnu.1.12.39)

yāta devā yathākāmaṁ svasthānaṁ vigatajvarāḥ nivartayāmy ahaṁ bālaṁ tapasy āsaktamānasam

'Go, O gods, each to your own abode as you wish, your fever gone; I myself shall turn back the boy whose mind is fixed upon his austerity.'

Verse 40 (vishnu.1.12.40)

śrīparāśara uvāca ity uktā devadevena praṇamya tridaśās tataḥ prayayuḥ svāni dhiṣṇyāni śatakratupurogamāḥ

Parashara said: Thus told by the god of gods, the immortals then bowed and went, each to his own station, with Shatakratu at their head.

Verse 41 (vishnu.1.12.41)

bhagavān api sarvātmā tanmayatvena toṣitaḥ gatvā dhruvam uvācedaṁ caturbhujavapur hariḥ

And the blessed lord himself, the self of all, pleased by Dhruva's utter absorption in him, went to Dhruva and, in his four-armed form, Hari spoke this.

Verse 42 (vishnu.1.12.42)

śrībhagavān uvāca auttānapāde bhadraṁ te tapasā paritoṣitaḥ varado 'ham anuprāpto varaṁ varaya suvrata

Shri Bhagavan said: 'Blessing upon you, son of Uttanapada! I am pleased by your austerity; I, the giver of boons, have come before you — ask your boon, O one of good vows.'

Verse 43 (vishnu.1.12.43)

bāhyārthanirapekṣaṁ te mayi cittaṁ yad āhitam tuṣṭo 'haṁ bhavatas tena tad vṛṇīṣva varaṁ param

'That your mind, indifferent to external things, has been fixed upon me — by this I am pleased with you; therefore choose that supreme boon.'

Verse 44 (vishnu.1.12.44)

śrīparāśara uvāca śrutvetthaṁ gaditaṁ tasya devadevasya bālakaḥ unmīlitākṣo dadṛśe dhyānadṛṣṭaṁ hariṁ puraḥ

Parashara said: Hearing this spoken by the god of gods, the boy opened his eyes and beheld before him Hari, exactly as he had seen him in meditation.

Verse 45 (vishnu.1.12.45)

śaṅkhacakragadāśārṅgavarāsidharam acyutam kirīṭinaṁ samālokya jagāma śirasā mahīm

Beholding him, crowned, bearing conch, discus, mace, the bow Sharnga, and a fine sword — the Undying One — he fell, his head touching the earth.

Verse 46 (vishnu.1.12.46)

romāñcitāṅgaḥ sahasā sādhvasaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ stavāya devadevasya sa cakre mānasaṁ dhruvaḥ

His body suddenly thrilled with rapture, Dhruva, overcome with utmost awe, resolved in his mind to praise the god of gods.

Verse 47 (vishnu.1.12.47)

kiṁ vadāmi stutāv asya kenoktenāsya saṁstutiḥ ity ākulamatir devaṁ tam eva śaraṇaṁ yayau

'What shall I say in praise of him? With what words is he to be duly praised?' — his mind thus confused, he went for refuge to that very god.

Verse 48 (vishnu.1.12.48)

śrīdhruva uvāca bhagavan yadi me toṣaṁ tapasā paramaṁ gataḥ stotuṁ tad aham icchāmi varam enaṁ prayaccha me

Shri Dhruva said: 'O blessed lord, if you are supremely pleased by my austerity, then I wish to praise you — grant me this very boon.'

Verse 49 (vishnu.1.12.49)

brahmādyair vedavedajñair jñāyate yasya no gatiḥ taṁ tvāṁ katham ahaṁ deva stotuṁ śakṣyāmi bālakaḥ

'He whose path even Brahma and the other knowers of the Veda and its meaning cannot find — how, O god, shall I, a mere child, be able to praise you?'

Verse 50 (vishnu.1.12.50)

tvadbhaktipravaṇaṁ hy etat parameśvara me manaḥ stotuṁ pravṛttaṁ tvatpādau tatra prajñāṁ prayaccha me

'This mind of mine, O supreme lord, inclines wholly toward devotion to you and has set out to praise you — grant me, then, the understanding for it.'

Verse 51 (vishnu.1.12.51)

śrīparāśara uvāca śaṅkhaprāntena govindas taṁ pasparśa kṛtāñjalim uttānapādatanayaṁ dvijavarya jagatpatiḥ

Parashara said: O best of the twice-born, Govinda, lord of the world, touched that son of Uttanapada, standing with joined palms, with the tip of his conch.

Verse 52 (vishnu.1.12.52)

atha prasannavadanaḥ tatkṣaṇān nṛpanandanaḥ tuṣṭāva praṇato bhūtvā bhūtadhātāram acyutam

Then, his face at once gracious, that prince, having bowed low, praised the Undying One, the sustainer of all beings.

Verse 53 (vishnu.1.12.53)

śrīdhruva uvāca bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva ca bhūtādir ādiprakṛtir yasya rūpaṁ nato 'smi tam

Shri Dhruva said: 'Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, the principle of individuation, and primal Prakriti — I bow to him whose form these are.'

Verse 54 (vishnu.1.12.54)

śuddhaḥ sūkṣmo 'khilavyāpī pradhānāt parataḥ pumān yasya rūpaṁ namas tasmai puruṣāya guṇātmane

'Pure, subtle, all-pervading, the Person beyond Pradhana — salutation to that Person whose form this is, the very self of the gunas.'

Verse 55 (vishnu.1.12.55)

bhūrādīnāṁ samastānāṁ gandhādīnāṁ ca śāśvataḥ buddhyādīnāṁ pradhānasya puruṣasya ca yaḥ paraḥ

'He who is beyond all the elements — earth and the rest — beyond the eternal subtle essences of smell and the rest, beyond intellect and the rest, and beyond Pradhana and Purusha themselves—'

Verse 56 (vishnu.1.12.56)

taṁ brahmabhūtam ātmānam aśeṣajagataḥ patim prapadye śaraṇaṁ śuddhaṁ tvadrūpaṁ parameśvara

'him, that self become Brahman, lord of the entire universe — your pure form, O supreme lord, I take as my refuge.'

Verse 57 (vishnu.1.12.57)

bṛhattvād bṛṁhaṇatvāc ca yad rūpaṁ brahmasaṁjñitam tasmai namas te sarvātman yogicintyāvikāravat

'Because of its vastness and its power to expand all things, that form is called Brahman; salutation to you, self of all, unchanging, to be contemplated by yogis.'

Verse 58 (vishnu.1.12.58)
