Parashara said: Hiranyakashipu, hearing that the sorceress had been rendered vain, summoned his son and asked him the cause of this power.
Verse 2 (vishnu.1.19.2)

hiraṇyakaśipur uvāca prahlāda suprabhāvo 'si kim etat te viceṣṭitam etan mantrādijanitam utāho sahajaṁ tava
Hiranyakashipu said: 'Prahlada, you possess great power — what is this behavior of yours? Is this born of mantras and the like, or is it innate in you?'
Verse 3 (vishnu.1.19.3)
śrīparāśara uvāca evaṁ pṛṣṭas tadā pitrā prahlādo 'surabālakaḥ praṇipatya pituḥ pādāv idaṁ vacanam abravīt
Parashara said: Thus questioned by his father, that Asura boy Prahlada, bowing at his father's feet, spoke this word.
Verse 4 (vishnu.1.19.4)
na mantrādikṛtas tāta na ca naisargiko mama prabhāva eṣa sāmānyo yasya yasyācyuto hṛdi
'Father, this is not brought about by mantras or the like, nor is it natural to me alone; this power is common to whomever has the Undying One in his heart.'
Verse 5 (vishnu.1.19.5)
anyeṣāṁ yo na pāpāni cintayaty ātmano yathā tasya pāpāgamas tāta hetvabhāvān na vidyate
'He who does not contemplate evils toward others as he would toward himself — for him, father, the arising of sin does not occur, since its cause is absent.'
Verse 6 (vishnu.1.19.6)
karmaṇā manasā vācā parapīḍāṁ karoti yaḥ tad bījaṁ janma phalati prabhūtaṁ tasya cāśubham
'Whoever, through action, mind, or speech, brings pain to another — that very seed of his ripens into birth, and into much that is inauspicious for him.'
Verse 7 (vishnu.1.19.7)
so 'haṁ na pāpam icchāmi na karomi vadāmi vā cintayan sarvabhūtastham ātmany api ca keśavam
'I do not desire evil, nor do I do it, nor speak it, contemplating Keshava as present within all beings, and within my own self as well.'
Verse 8 (vishnu.1.19.8)
śārīraṁ mānasaṁ duḥkhaṁ daivaṁ bhūtabhavaṁ tathā sarvatra śubhacittasya tasya me jāyate kutaḥ
'Suffering — of the body, of the mind, sent by fate, or arising from other beings — for me, of ever-auspicious mind toward all, whence could it possibly arise?'
Verse 9 (vishnu.1.19.9)
evaṁ sarveṣu bhūteṣu bhaktir avyabhicāriṇī kartavyā paṇḍitair jñātvā sarvabhūtamayaṁ harim
'Thus, unwavering devotion toward all beings should be practiced by the wise, knowing Hari to be the very substance of all beings.'
Verse 10 (vishnu.1.19.10)
śrīparāśara uvāca iti śrutvā sa daityendraḥ prāsādaśikhare sthitaḥ krodhāndhakāritamukhaḥ prāha daiteyakiṁkarān
Parashara said: Hearing this, that lord of the Daityas, standing upon the peak of his palace, his face darkened with blinding anger, said to the Daitya servants.
Verse 11 (vishnu.1.19.11)
durātmā kṣipyatām asmāt prāsādāc chatayojanāt giripṛṣṭhe patatv asmiñ śilābhinnāṅgasaṁhatiḥ
'Let this vile-souled one be hurled from this palace, a hundred leagues high, down onto that mountain's back, his limbs shattered by the rocks.'
Verse 12 (vishnu.1.19.12)
tatas taṁ cikṣipuḥ sarve bālaṁ daiteyakiṁkarāḥ papāta so 'py adhaḥ kṣipto hṛdayenodvahan harim
Then all the Daitya servants hurled that boy down; and he too, thrown down below, fell, bearing Hari within his heart.
Verse 13 (vishnu.1.19.13)
patamānaṁ jagaddhātrī jagaddhātari keśave bhaktiyuktaṁ dadhārainam upagamya ca medinī
As he fell, the earth, sustainer of the world, approached and bore up this one devoted to Keshava, sustainer of the world.
Verse 14 (vishnu.1.19.14)
tato vilokya taṁ svastham aviśīrṇāsthibandhanam hiraṇyakaśipuḥ prāha śambaraṁ māyināṁ varam
Then, seeing him unharmed, his bones and joints unshattered, Hiranyakashipu said to Shambara, foremost of masters of illusion.
Verse 15 (vishnu.1.19.15)
nāsmābhiḥ śakyate hantum ayaṁ durvṛttabālakaḥ māyāṁ vetti bhavāṁs tasmān māyayainaṁ niṣūdaya
'This wicked-natured boy cannot be killed by us; you know illusion — therefore destroy him through illusion.'
Verse 16 (vishnu.1.19.16)
śambara uvāca sūdayāmy eṣa daityendra paśya māyābalaṁ mama sahasram atra māyānāṁ paśya koṭiśataṁ tathā
Shambara said: 'I shall destroy him, O lord of the Daityas; behold the power of my illusion — behold here a thousand illusions, and a hundred million more.'
Verse 17 (vishnu.1.19.17)
śrīparāśara uvāca tataḥ samasṛjan māyāḥ prahlāde śambaro 'suraḥ vināśam icchan durbuddhiḥ sarvatra samadarśini
Parashara said: Then the ill-minded Asura Shambara, desiring destruction, unleashed his illusions against Prahlada, who was of equal vision toward all.
Verse 18 (vishnu.1.19.18)
samāhitamanā bhūtvā śambare 'pi vimatsaraḥ maitreya so 'pi prahlādaḥ sasmāra madhusūdanam
His mind composed, free of envy even toward Shambara, that same Prahlada, O Maitreya, remembered Madhusudana.
Verse 19 (vishnu.1.19.19)
tato bhagavatā tasya rakṣārthaṁ cakram uttamam ājagāma samājñaptaṁ jvālāmāli sudarśanam
Then, for his protection, at the blessed lord's command, there came the supreme discus, garlanded with flame, the Sudarshana.
Verse 20 (vishnu.1.19.20)
tena māyāsahasraṁ tac śambarasyāśugāminā bālasya rakṣatā deham ekaikaśyena sūditam
By that most swift-moving discus, Shambara's thousand illusions were destroyed one by one, protecting the boy's body.
Verse 21 (vishnu.1.19.21)
saṁśoṣakaṁ tato vāyuṁ daityendra idam abravīt śīghram eṣa mamādeśād durātmā nīyatāṁ kṣayam
Then the king of the Daityas said this to the drying wind: 'Quickly, at my command, let this vile-souled one be brought to his destruction.'
Verse 22 (vishnu.1.19.22)
tathety uktvātha so 'py enaṁ viveśa pavano laghuḥ śīto 'tirūkṣaḥ śoṣāya taddehasyātiduḥsahaḥ
Saying 'so be it,' that swift wind entered into him — cold, exceedingly harsh, most unbearable, to dry out his body.
Verse 23 (vishnu.1.19.23)
tenāviṣṭaṁ tathātmānaṁ sa buddhvā daityabālakaḥ hṛdayena mahātmānaṁ dadhāra dharaṇīdharam
But the Daitya boy, knowing himself thus entered by it, held that great-souled bearer of the earth within his heart.
Verse 24 (vishnu.1.19.24)
hṛdayasthas tatas tasya taṁ vāyum atiśoṣaṇam papau janārdanaḥ kruddhaḥ sa yayau pavanaḥ kṣayam
Then, present within his heart, Janardana, enraged, drank up that most-drying wind, and that wind came to its end.
Verse 25 (vishnu.1.19.25)
kṣīṇāsu sarvamāyāsu pavane saṁkṣayaṁ gate jagāma so 'pi bhavanaṁ guror eva mahāmatiḥ
When all the illusions had failed, and the wind too had perished, that great-minded one went once more to his teacher's house.
Verse 26 (vishnu.1.19.26)

Day after day, the teacher taught that boy the science of policy, bringing the fruit of kingship, as composed by Ushanas.

Verse 30 (vishnu.1.19.30)
