Amsa 3 · Chapter 15
The Qualities of Brahmins Fed at Shraddha and the Full Ceremony
Verse 1 (vishnu.3.15.1)
aurva uvāca brāhmaṇān bhojayecchrāddhe yadguṇāṁstānnibodha me
Aurva said: Learn from me the qualities of the Brahmins who should be fed at a shraddha.
Verse 2 (vishnu.3.15.2)
triṇāciketastrimadhustrisuparṇaṣṣaḍaṅgavit vedavicchrotriyo yogī tathā vai jyeṣṭhasāmagaḥ
One versed in the three Nachiketa fires, in the threefold Madhu-vidya, in the three Suparna hymns, versed in the six Vedangas, knowing the Veda, a Shrotriya, a Yogin, and likewise a singer of the eldest Sama,
Verse 3 (vishnu.3.15.3)
ṛtvik svasreyadauhitrajāmātṛśvaśurāstathā mātulo'tha taponiṣṭhaḥ pañcāgnyabhiratastathā śiṣyāḥ sambandhinaścaiva mātāpitṛrataśca yaḥ
an officiating priest, a sister's son, a daughter's son, a son-in-law, a father-in-law, a maternal uncle, one devoted to austerity, one practising the five fires,
Verse 4 (vishnu.3.15.4)
etānniyojayecchrāddhe pūrvoktān prathame nṛpa brāhmaṇān pitṛtuṣṭyarthamanukalpeṣvanantarān
a pupil, a relation, and one devoted to the service of his parents -- O king, these aforesaid Brahmins should be engaged first at a shraddha; and, for the satisfaction of the ancestors, the next in order, in the alternative category.
Verse 5 (vishnu.3.15.5)
mitradhrukkunakhī klībaḥ śyāvadantastathā dvijaḥ kanyādūṣayitā vahnivedojjhaḥ somavikrayī
One who betrays a friend, one with deformed nails, an impotent man, a Brahmin with blackened teeth, one who has violated a maiden, one who has abandoned the sacred fire and the Veda, one who sells Soma,
Verse 6 (vishnu.3.15.6)
abhiśastastathā stenaḥ piśuno grāmayājakaḥ bhṛtakādhyāpakastadvad bhṛtakādhyāpitaśca yaḥ
one who is accursed, a thief, a slanderer, one who officiates as priest for a whole village, one who teaches for hire, and likewise one who is taught for hire,
Verse 7 (vishnu.3.15.7)
parapūrvāpatiścaiva mātāpitrostathojjhakaḥ vṛṣalīsūtipoṣṭā ca vṛṣalīpatireva ca
one who is the husband of a woman previously married to another, one who has abandoned his parents, one who fathers and rears children upon a Shudra woman, and one who is himself the husband of a Shudra woman,
Verse 8 (vishnu.3.15.8)
tathā devalakaścaiva śrāddhe nārhati ketanam
and likewise one who lives by the worship of images -- these are not fit to be invited to a shraddha.
Verse 9 (vishnu.3.15.9)
prathame'hni budhaḥ śastāñchrotriyādīn nimantrayet kathayecca tathaivaiṣāṁ niyogān pitṛdaivikān
On the very first day, let the wise man invite the praiseworthy Shrotriyas and the rest, and at that same time tell them of the sacred rites pertaining to the ancestors.
Verse 10 (vishnu.3.15.10)
tataḥ krodhavyavāyādīnāyāsaṁ tairdvijaissaha yajamāno na kurvīta doṣastatra mahānayam
Then let the sacrificer not engage, together with those Brahmins, in anger, sexual union, or exertion; a very great fault lies in that.
Verse 11 (vishnu.3.15.11)
śrāddhe niyukto bhuktvā vā bhojayitvā niyujya ca vyavāyī retaso gartte majjayatyātmanaḥ pitṝn
One appointed for a shraddha who, having eaten or having fed others, or though appointed, engages in sexual union -- he plunges his own ancestors into a pit of semen.
Verse 12 (vishnu.3.15.12)
tasmāt prathamamatroktaṁ dvijāgryāṇaṁ nimantraṇam animantrya dvijānevamāgatān bhojayed yatīn
Therefore it is said here that the invitation of the foremost Brahmins should come first; without inviting them, but leaving the Brahmins aside, let him also feed such ascetics as arrive on their own.
Verse 13 (vishnu.3.15.13)
pādaśaucādinā gehamāgatān pūjayed dvijān
Let him honor the Brahmins who come to his house with the washing of their feet and the like.
Verse 14 (vishnu.3.15.14)
pavitrapāṇirācāntānāsaneṣūpaveśayet pitṝṇāmayujo yugmān devānāmicchayā dvijān
Wearing the sacred ring on his hand, let him seat those who have rinsed upon their seats -- an odd number of pairs for the ancestors, and, as he wishes, Brahmins for the gods.
Verse 15 (vishnu.3.15.15)
devānāmekamekaṁ vā pitṝṇāñca niyojayet
For the gods, let him appoint one or two, and likewise the same number for the ancestors.
Verse 16 (vishnu.3.15.16)
tathā mātāmahaśvāddhaṁ vaiśvadevasamanvitam kurvīta bhaktisampannastantraṁ vā vaiśvadaivikam
Likewise, the devout man should also perform the shraddha of the maternal grandfather together with the Vaishvadeva rite, or he may perform it by the Vaishvadevika procedure.
Verse 17 (vishnu.3.15.17)
prāṅamukhān bhojayed viprān devānāmubhayātmakān pitṛmātāmahānāñca bhojayeccāpyudaṅmukhān
Let him feed, facing east, the Brahmins who represent the gods of both kinds; and let him also feed, facing north, those who represent the fathers and the maternal grandfathers.
Verse 18 (vishnu.3.15.18)
pṛthak tayoḥ kecidāhuḥ śrāddhasya karaṇāṁ nṛpa ekatraikena pākena vadantyanye maharṣayaḥ
O king, some declare that the performance of the shraddha should be separate for the two of them; other great sages say it may be done together, with a single cooking.
Verse 19 (vishnu.3.15.19)
viṣṭarārthaṁ kuśaṁ dattvā sampūjyārdhyaṁ vidhānataḥ kuryādāvāhanaṁ prājño devānāṁ tadanujñayā
Having spread kusha grass for a seat, and having duly worshipped with an offering of water, let the wise man invoke the gods with their permission.
Verse 20 (vishnu.3.15.20)
yavāmbunā ca devānāṁ dadyādarghyaṁ vidhānavit sraggandhadhūpadīpāṁśca tebhyo dadyādyathāvidhi
One who knows the procedure should offer the gods an offering of water mixed with barley, and should also present them, duly, with garlands, fragrance, incense, and a lamp.
Verse 21 (vishnu.3.15.21)
pitṝṇāmapasavyaṁ tat sarvamevopakalpayet anujñāñca tataḥprāpya dattvā darbhān dvidhākṛtān
For the ancestors, let him perform all of this in the reverse manner (apasavya, keeping the sacred thread over the left shoulder); and then, having obtained their permission, let him offer kusha grass divided into two portions.
Verse 22 (vishnu.3.15.22)
mantrapūrvaṁ pitṝṇāntu kṛryāccāvāhanaṁ budhaḥ tilāmbunā cāpasavyaṁ dadyādarghyādikaṁ nṛpa
Let the wise man invoke the ancestors only with mantras, and, in the reverse manner, O king, offer them an offering of water mixed with sesame, and the rest.
Verse 23 (vishnu.3.15.23)
kāle tatrātithiṁ prāptamannakāmaṁ nṛpādhvagam brahmaṇairabhyanujñātaḥ kāmaṁ tamapi bhojayet
If at that time a traveling guest, desiring food, comes there -- even one of royal bearing -- let him, with the permission of the Brahmins, feed him as well, as much as he wishes.
Verse 24 (vishnu.3.15.24)
yogino vividhai rūpairnarāṇāmupakāriṇaḥ bhramanti pṛthivīmetāmavijñātasvarūpiṇāḥ
Yogins, for the benefit of men, take on various forms and wander about this earth, their true nature unrecognized.
Verse 25 (vishnu.3.15.25)
smādabhyarcayet prāptaṁ śrāddhakāle'tithiṁ budhaḥ śrāddhakriyāphalaṁ hanti narendrāpūjito'tithiḥ
Therefore let the wise man reverently honor the guest who arrives at the time of shraddha; a guest left unhonored, even by a king, destroys the fruit of the shraddha-rite.
Verse 26 (vishnu.3.15.26)
juhuyād vyañjanakṣāravarjamannaṁ tato'nale anujñāto dvijaistaistu trikṛtvaḥ puruṣarṣabha
O bull among men, then, with the permission of those Brahmins, let him offer in the fire, three times, food free of pungent seasoning and alkali.
Verse 27 (vishnu.3.15.27)
agnaye kavyavāhāya svāhetyādau nṛpāhutiḥ somāya vai pitṛmate dātavyā tadanantaram
'To Agni, the bearer of the ancestral offering, svaha' -- thus the first oblation should be given by the king; after that, one should also be given to Soma together with the ancestors.
Verse 28 (vishnu.3.15.28)
vaivasvatāya caivānyā tṛtīyā dīyate tataḥ hutāvaśiṣṭamalpānnaṁ pitṛpātreṣu nirvapet
Then, thereafter, a third oblation is given to Vaivasvata; the small remainder of the offering left over from the oblation should be placed in the vessels of the ancestors.
Verse 29 (vishnu.3.15.29)
tato'nnaṁ muṣṭamatyarthamabhīṣṭamatisaṁskṛtam dattvā juṣadhvamicchāto vācyametadaniṣṭhuram
Then, having given a handful of most delicious, desired, and well-prepared food, let him say, 'partake of this as you wish' -- this should be said without any harshness.
Verse 30 (vishnu.3.15.30)
bhoktavyaṁ taiśca taccittairmaunibhiḥ sumukhaiḥ sukham akruddhyatā cātvaratā deyaṁ tenāpi bhaktitaḥ
Let those Brahmins too, their minds fixed upon it, eat happily in silence with cheerful faces; and let the host, free of anger and free of haste, give it with devotion as well.
Verse 31 (vishnu.3.15.31)
rakṣoghnamantrapaṭhanaṁ bhūmerāstaraṇaṁ tilaiḥ kṛtvā dhyeyāḥ svapitarasta eva dvijasattamāḥ
Having recited the demon-destroying mantras, and having strewn the ground with sesame, O best of Brahmins, one's own ancestors should then be contemplated.
Verse 32 (vishnu.3.15.32)
pitā pitāmahaścaiva tathaiva prapitāmahaḥ mama tṛptiṁ prayāntvadya vipradeheṣu saṁsthitāḥ
'May my father, grandfather, and likewise great-grandfather, established within the bodies of these Brahmins, today attain my offering of satisfaction.'
Verse 33 (vishnu.3.15.33)
pitā pitāmahaścaiva tathaiva prapitāmahaḥ mama tṛptiṁ prayāntvadya homāpyāyitamūrtayaḥ
'May my father, grandfather, and likewise great-grandfather, their forms nourished by the fire-oblation, today attain my offering of satisfaction.'
Verse 34 (vishnu.3.15.34)
pitā pitāmahaścaiva tathaiva prapitāmahaḥ tṛptiṁ prayāntu piṣḍena mayā dattena bhūtale
'May my father, grandfather, and likewise great-grandfather, attain satisfaction from the rice-ball given by me here upon the earth.'
Verse 35 (vishnu.3.15.35)
pitā pitāmahaścaiva tathaiva prapitāmahaḥ tṛptiṁ prayāntu me bhaktyā mayaitatsamudāhṛtam
'May my father, grandfather, and likewise great-grandfather, attain satisfaction through my devotion; this has now been declared by me.'
Verse 36 (vishnu.3.15.36)
mātāmahastṛptimupaitu tasya tathā pitā tasya pitā tato'nyaḥ viśve ca devāḥ paramāṁ prayāntu tṛptiṁ praṇaśyantu ca yātudhānāḥ
'May the maternal grandfather too attain satisfaction, and his father, and his father in turn; may the Vishvadevas attain supreme satisfaction, and may the Rakshasas perish.'
Verse 37 (vishnu.3.15.37)
yajñeśvaro havyasamastakavya-bhoktāvyayātvā harīrīśvaro'tra tatsannidhānādapayāntu sadyo rakṣāṁsyaśeṣāṇyasurāśca sarvai
'The Lord of sacrifice, the enjoyer of all offerings both havya and kavya, the imperishable Hari, is the Lord here -- by his very presence, may all the Rakshasas and all the Asuras flee at once.'
Verse 38 (vishnu.3.15.38)
tṛptiṣveteṣu vikiredannaṁ vipreṣu bhūtale dadyādācamanārthāya tebyo vāri sakṛtsakṛt
Once they are satisfied, let him scatter food upon the ground for the Brahmins, and give them water, once each, for the rinsing of the mouth.
Verse 39 (vishnu.3.15.39)
sutṛptaistairanujñātaḥ sarveṇānnena bhūtale satilena tataḥ pimḍān samyagdadyātsamāhitaḥ
When they, well satisfied, give their permission, let him then, with full concentration, duly offer the rice-balls, made from all the remaining food together with sesame.
Verse 40 (vishnu.3.15.40)
pitṛtīrthena satilaṁ tathaiva salilāñjalim mātāmahebhyastenaiva piṇḍāṁstīrthena nirvapet
Let him also offer, by the ancestral part of the hand, water and a handful of water mixed with sesame; and by that same part, let him offer rice-balls for the maternal grandfathers too.
Verse 41 (vishnu.3.15.41)
dīkṣiṇāgreṣu darbheṣu puṣpadhūpādipūjitam svapitre prathamaṁ piṇḍaṁ dadyāducchiṣṭasannidhau
Upon kusha grass with its tips turned southward, worshipped with flowers, incense, and the like, let him offer the first rice-ball for his own father, near the leftover food.
Verse 42 (vishnu.3.15.42)
pitāmahāya caivānyaṁ tatpitre ca tathāparam darbhabhūle lepabhujaḥ prīṇayellepagharṣaṇaiḥ
For the grandfather, another; and for his father too, another; let him satisfy those who partake of the smearing at the base of the kusha grass by the rubbing of that smear.
Verse 43 (vishnu.3.15.43)
piṇḍairmātāmahāṁstadvad gandhamālyādisaṁyutaiḥ pūjayitvā dvijāgryāṇāṁ dadyāccācamanaṁ tataḥ
Likewise, having worshipped the maternal grandfathers with rice-balls furnished with fragrance and garlands, let him then give the eminent Brahmins water to rinse.
Verse 44 (vishnu.3.15.44)
pitṛbhyaḥ prathamaṁ bhaktyā tanmanasko nareśvara susvadhetyāśiṣā yuktāṁ dadyācchaktyā ca dikṣiṇām
O lord of men, first, with devotion and single-minded attention, let him give the ancestors a gift, accompanied with the blessing 'su-svadha', and, according to his means, a fee as well.
Verse 45 (vishnu.3.15.45)
dattvā ca dakṣiṇāṁ tebhyo vācayedvaiśvadevikān prīyantāmiha ye viśvedevāstena itīrayet
Having given them the fee, let him have the Brahmins connected with the Vaishvadeva rite recite: 'may the Vishvadevas who are here be pleased' -- let him have this recited.
Verse 46 (vishnu.3.15.46)
tatheti cokte tairvipraiḥ prārthanīyāstathāśiṣaḥ paścādvisarjayed devān pūrvaṁ pitryānmahīpate
When those Brahmins say 'so be it,' one should entreat them for their blessing; thereafter, let him dismiss the gods first, and then, O lord of the earth, those connected with the ancestors.
Verse 47 (vishnu.3.15.47)
mātāmahānāmapyevaṁ saha devaiḥ kramaḥ smṛtaḥ bhojane ca svaśaktyā ca dāne tadvadvisarjane
Likewise, for the maternal grandfathers too, together with the gods, this same order is remembered -- in feeding, in giving according to one's means, and likewise in dismissal.
Verse 48 (vishnu.3.15.48)
āpādaśaucanāt pūrvaṁ kuryād devadvijanmasu visarjanaṁ tu prathamaṁ paitramātāmaheṣu vai
The dismissal of the gods and the Brahmins should take place even before the washing of their feet; but the dismissal of the fathers and the maternal grandfathers should take place first of all.
Verse 49 (vishnu.3.15.49)
visarjayet prītivacaḥ sammānābhyacitāṁstataḥ nivarttetābhyanujñāta ādvāraṁ tānanuvrajet
Having spoken pleasant words, let him dismiss them, duly honored with respect; then, having received their leave, let him return, or accompany them as far as the door.
Verse 50 (vishnu.3.15.50)
tatastu vaiśvadevākhyaṁ kuryānnityakriyāṁ budhaḥ bhuñjīyācca samaṁ pūjyabhṛtyabandhubhirātmanaḥ
Then, thereafter, let the wise man perform the daily rite called Vaishvadeva, and let him himself eat, sharing equally with those deserving honor, with servants, and with kinsmen.
Verse 51 (vishnu.3.15.51)
evaṁ śrāddhaṁ budhaḥ kuryātpitryaṁ mātāmahaṁ tathā śrāddhairāpyāyitā dadyuḥ sarvān kāmān pitāmahāḥ
Thus let the wise man perform both the shraddha of the fathers and that of the maternal grandfathers; the ancestors, satisfied by these shraddhas, bestow all one's desired objects.
Verse 52 (vishnu.3.15.52)
trīṇi śrāddhe pavitrāṇi dauhitraḥ kutapastilāḥ rajatasya tathā dānaṁ kathāsaṅkīrtanādikam
Three things are held sacred at a shraddha -- a daughter's son, the Kutapa hour, and sesame; and likewise the gift of silver, and the recitation of sacred tales.
Verse 53 (vishnu.3.15.53)
varjyāni kurvatā śrāddhaṁ krodho'dhvagamanaṁ tvarā bhokturapyatra rājendra trayametanna śasyate
One who performs a shraddha should avoid anger, travel upon a road, and haste; and, O king of kings, for the one who partakes as well, these same three are not praised.
Verse 54 (vishnu.3.15.54)
viśvedevāḥ sapitarastathā mātāmahā nṛpa kulaṁ cāpyāyate puṁsāṁ sarvaṁ śrāddhaṁ prakurvatām
O king, the Vishvadevas, together with the ancestors, and likewise the maternal grandfathers -- by all of this, the entire lineage of the men who perform the shraddha is nourished.
Verse 55 (vishnu.3.15.55)
somādhāraḥ pitṛgaṇo yāgādhāraśca candramāḥ śrāddhe yoginiyogastu tasmādbhūpāla śasyate
The host of ancestors is dependent upon Soma, and the sacrifice is dependent upon the moon; therefore, O king, the presence of a Yogin at a shraddha is declared to be praiseworthy.
Verse 56 (vishnu.3.15.56)
sahastrasyāpi viprāṇāṁ yaugī cetpurataḥ sthitaḥ sarvān bhoktṝṁstārayati yajamānaṁ tathā nṛpa
O king, if even amid a thousand Brahmins a single Yogin be present, he carries across to salvation all those who partake, and the sacrificer as well.
