Amsa 3 · Chapter 18
Mayamoha and the Fall of the Daityas; the Tale of Shatadhanu and Shaivya
Verse 1 (vishnu.3.18.1)
śrīparāśara uvāca tapasyabhiratān so'tha māyāmoho mahāsurān maitreya dadṛśe gatvā narmadātīrasaṁśritān
Sri Parashara said: Then, O Maitreya, Mayamoha, having gone there, beheld those great demons devoted to austerity, established on the banks of the Narmada.
Verse 2 (vishnu.3.18.2)
tato digambaro muṇḍo barhipicchadharo dvija māyāmoho'surān ślakṣṇamidaṁ vacanamabravīt
Then, naked, shaven-headed, wearing peacock feathers, O Brahmin, Mayamoha spoke these gentle words to the demons.
Verse 3 (vishnu.3.18.3)
he daityapatayo brūta yadarthaṁ tapyate tapaḥ aihikaṁ vātha pāratryaṁ tapasaḥ phalamicchatha
'O lords of the Daityas, tell me, for what purpose is this austerity performed? Do you desire the fruit of your austerity in this world or in the next?'
Verse 4 (vishnu.3.18.4)
asurā ūcuḥ pāratryaphalalābhāya tapaśvaryā mahāmate asmābhiriyamārabdhā kiṁ vā te'tra vivakṣitam
The demons said: 'O great sage, it is for the sake of attaining the fruit in the next world that we have undertaken this course of austerity. What is your meaning in asking this?'
Verse 5 (vishnu.3.18.5)
māyāmoha uvāca kurudhvaṁ mama vākyāni yadi muktimabhīpsatha arhadhvamenaṁ dharmañca muktidvāramasaṁvṛtam
Mayamoha said: 'If you desire liberation, follow my words; embrace this dharma, which is the unobstructed gateway to liberation.'
Verse 6 (vishnu.3.18.6)
dharmo vimukterarho'yaṁ naitasmādaparo varaḥ atraiva saṁsthitāḥ svargaṁ vimuktiṁ vā gamiṣyatha
'This dharma is fit for liberation; there is no other higher boon than this. Established in it alone, you shall attain either heaven or liberation.'
Verse 7 (vishnu.3.18.7)
arhadhvaṁ dharmametañca sarve yūyaṁ mahābalāḥ
'O you of great strength, all of you should embrace this very dharma.'
Verse 8 (vishnu.3.18.8)
śrīparāśara uvāca evaṁ prakārairbahubhiryuktidarśanacarcitaiḥ māyāmohena te daityā vedamārgādapākṛtāḥ
Sri Parashara said: By these many kinds of arguments, strengthened with the appearance of logic, those Daityas were, by Mayamoha, drawn away from the path of the Veda.
Verse 9 (vishnu.3.18.9)
dharmāyaitadadharmāya sadetanna sadityapi vimuktaye tvidaṁ naitad vimuktiṁ samprayacchati
'This is for dharma, this for adharma; this is real, this is not unreal either; this is for liberation, yet this does not grant liberation;'
Verse 10 (vishnu.3.18.10)
paramārtho'yamatyarthaṁ paramārtho na cāpyayam kāryametadakāryañca naitadevaṁ spuṭaṁ tvidam
'This is exceedingly the highest truth, and yet this is not the highest truth either; this is to be done, and this is not to be done either; none of this is quite so clear.'
Verse 11 (vishnu.3.18.11)
digvāsasāmayaṁ dharmo dharmo'yaṁ bahuvāsasām
'This is the dharma of the sky-clad ascetics, and this same dharma belongs also to those who wear many garments' --
Verse 12 (vishnu.3.18.12)
ityanaikāntavādañca māyāmohena naikadhā tena darśayatā daityāḥ svadharmaṁ tyājitā dvija
Thus, presenting the doctrine of relativism in many ways, O Brahmin, by showing this, he caused the Daityas to abandon their own proper dharma.
Verse 13 (vishnu.3.18.13)
arhataitaṁ mahādharmaṁ māyāmohena te yataḥ proktāstamāśritā dharmamārhatāstena te'bhavan
'Embrace this very great dharma' -- thus told by Mayamoha, they, having taken refuge in that declared dharma, thereby became known as Arhatas (followers of the 'worthy one').
Verse 14 (vishnu.3.18.14)
trayīdharmasamutsargaṁ māyāmohena te'surāḥ kāritāstanmayā hyāsaṁstato'nye tatpracoditāḥ
By Mayamoha, those demons were induced to renounce the dharma of the triple Veda -- it was thus indeed brought about by me; and then, urged on by that, others too followed.
Verse 15 (vishnu.3.18.15)
tairapyanye pare taiśca tairapyanye pare ca taiḥ alpairahobhiḥ santayaktā tairdaityaiḥ prāyaśastrayī
By them, others still; and by them, yet others; and by them again, others -- thus, by those Daityas, within but a few days, the triple Veda was almost entirely abandoned.
Verse 16 (vishnu.3.18.16)
punaśca raktāmbaradhṛṅ māyāmoho jitendriyaḥ anyānāhāsurān gatvā mṛdvalpamadhurākṣaram
Then, wearing red garments, the self-controlled Mayamoha, going to other demons, began to speak in soft, brief, and sweet words.
Verse 17 (vishnu.3.18.17)
svargārthaṁ yadi vo vāñchā nirvāṇārthamathāsurāḥ tadalaṁ paśughātādiduṣṭadharmairnibodhata
Mayamoha said: 'O demons, if your wish is for heaven, or else for liberation, then enough of the wicked practices such as the slaughter of animals -- understand this.'
Verse 18 (vishnu.3.18.18)
vijñānamayamevaitadaśeṣamavagacchata budhyadhvaṁ me vacaḥ samyag budhairevamihoditam
'All this is nothing but consciousness itself, understand this in full; comprehend my words correctly, as has here been declared by the wise as well.'
Verse 19 (vishnu.3.18.19)
jagadetadanādhāraṁ bhrāntijñānārthatatparam rāgādiduṣṭamatyarthaṁ bhrāmyate bhavasaṅkaṭe
'This world is without any foundation, intent solely upon the object of a deluded knowledge; exceedingly corrupted by passion and the rest, it wanders about in the peril of transmigration.'
Verse 20 (vishnu.3.18.20)
evaṁ budhyata budhyadhvaṁ budhyataivamitīrayan māyāmohaḥ sa daiteyān dharmamatyājayannijam
Thus saying, 'understand it thus, understand it, understand it in this very way,' that Mayamoha caused the Daityas to abandon their own dharma.
Verse 21 (vishnu.3.18.21)
nānāprakāravacanaṁ sa teṣāṁ yuktiyojitam tathā tathā ca trayīdharmaṁ tatyajuste yathā yathā
He spoke to them many kinds of speech, furnished with seeming logic; and in whatever manner he spoke, in that very manner they abandoned the dharma of the triple Veda.
Verse 22 (vishnu.3.18.22)
te'pyanyeṣāṁ tathaivocuranyairanye tathoditāḥ maitreya tatyajurdharmaṁ vedasmṛtyuditaṁ param
They too then spoke likewise to others, and others still were told the same by yet others; thus, O Maitreya, they went on abandoning that supreme dharma declared in the Veda and the Smriti.
Verse 23 (vishnu.3.18.23)
anyānapyanyapāṣaṇḍaprakārairbahubhirdvija daiteyān mohayāmāsa māyāmoho'timohakṛt
O Brahmin, deluding others as well through many other kinds of heretical doctrines, that exceedingly deluding Mayamoha bewitched the Daityas.
Verse 24 (vishnu.3.18.24)
svalpenaiva hi kālena māyāmohena te'surāḥ mohitāstatyajuḥ sarvāṁ trayīmārgāśritāṁ kathām
In a very short time indeed, deluded by Mayamoha, those demons abandoned the entire discourse that followed the path of the triple Veda.
Verse 25 (vishnu.3.18.25)
kecidvinindāṁ vedānāṁ devānāmapare dvija yajñakarmakalāpasya tathānye ca dvijanmanām
O Brahmin, some began to revile the Vedas, others the gods, and some the whole array of sacrificial rites, and likewise others reviled the Brahmins.
Verse 26 (vishnu.3.18.26)
naitadyuktisahaṁ vākyaṁ hiṁsā dharmāya neṣyate havīṁṣyanaladagdhāni phalāyetyarbhakoditama
'This is not a statement that can withstand reason -- that violence should be held desirable for dharma; that oblations burnt in fire bear fruit -- this is a thing said by mere children.'
Verse 27 (vishnu.3.18.27)
yajñairanekairdevatvamavāpyendreṇa bhujyate śamyādi yadi cetkāṣṭhaṁ tadvaraṁ patrabhuk paśu
'Having obtained godhood through many sacrifices, Indra enjoys it -- if mere wood, such as the shami branch, can serve as the means of a sacrifice, then better indeed is a leaf-eating beast.'
Verse 28 (vishnu.3.18.28)
nihatasya paśoryajñe svargaprātpiryadīṣyate svapitā yajamānena kinnu tasmānna hanyate
'If the beast slain in a sacrifice attains heaven, then why does not the sacrificer instead slay his own father in that very sacrifice?'
Verse 29 (vishnu.3.18.29)
tṛptaye jāyate puṁso bhuktamanyena cettataḥ kuryācchrāddhaṁ śramāyānnaṁ na vaheyuḥ pravāsinaḥ
'If a man's satisfaction can arise from food eaten by someone else, then it would suffice merely to perform the shraddha; travelers would then have no need to carry food at all.'
Verse 30 (vishnu.3.18.30)
janaśraddheyamityetadavagamya tato'tra vaḥ upekṣā śreyase vākyaṁ rocatāṁ yanmayeritam
'Understanding that this is merely held to be trustworthy by common folk, indifference toward it is therefore the better course -- may this saying of mine find favor with you.'
Verse 31 (vishnu.3.18.31)
na hyāptavādā nabhaso nipatanti mahāsurāḥ yuktimad vacanaṁ grāhyaṁ mayānyaiśca bhavadvidhaiḥ
'Great demons do not fall from the sky as ready-made words of trustworthy authority; only reasoned speech should be accepted, whether spoken by me or by others such as yourselves.'
Verse 32 (vishnu.3.18.32)
māyāmohena te daityāḥ prakārairbahubhistathā vyutthāpitā yathā naiṣāṁ trayīṁ kaścidarocayat
Parashara said: By Mayamoha, through many such devices, those Daityas were so thoroughly unsettled that not one of them any longer took delight in the triple Veda.
Verse 33 (vishnu.3.18.33)
itthamunmārgayāteṣu teṣu daityeṣu te'marāḥ udyogaṁ paramaṁ kṛtvā yuddhāya samupasthitāḥ
Thus, when those Daityas had gone astray upon the wrong path, the gods, making the greatest effort, prepared themselves for war.
Verse 34 (vishnu.3.18.34)
tato devāsuraṁ yuddhaṁ punarevābhavad dvija hatāśca te'surā devaiḥ sanmārgaparipanthinaḥ
Then, O Brahmin, the war between the gods and demons occurred once more; and those demons, opponents of the righteous path, were slain by the gods.
Verse 35 (vishnu.3.18.35)
svadharmakavacaṁ teṣāmabhūd yatprathamaṁ dvija tena rakṣābhavat pūrvaṁ neśurnaṣṭe ca tatra te
That which had earlier been their armor in the form of their own proper dharma -- by that they had formerly been protected, and, so long as it was not destroyed, they did not perish.
Verse 36 (vishnu.3.18.36)
tato maitreya tanmārgavarttino ye'bhavañjanāḥ nagnāste tairyatastyaktaṁ trayīsaṁvaraṇāṁ vṛthā
Then, O Maitreya, whatever people became followers of that path came to be called 'naked,' since by them the covering-garment of the triple Veda had been vainly cast off.
Verse 37 (vishnu.3.18.37)
brahmacārī gṛhasthaśca vānaprasthastathāśramī parivrāḍ vā caturtho'tra pañcamo nopapadyate
The celibate student, the householder, and the forest-dweller -- these are the ashramas, and the wandering mendicant is the fourth; beyond these, a fifth ashrama is not admissible.
Verse 38 (vishnu.3.18.38)
O Maitreya, he who, having abandoned the householder's stage, becomes neither a forest-dweller nor a wandering mendicant -- that man is 'naked,' a doer of sin.
Verse 39 (vishnu.3.18.39)
nityānāṁ karmaṇāṁ vipra tasya hāniraharniśam akurvan vihitaṁ karma śaktaḥ patati taddine
O Brahmin, the loss of the daily rites accrues to him day and night; he who, though capable, does not perform the enjoined act, falls that very day.
Verse 40 (vishnu.3.18.40)
prāyaścittena mahatā śuddhimāpnotyanāpadi pakṣaṁ nityakriyāhāneḥ karttā maitreya mānavaḥ
O Maitreya, in the absence of any calamity, a man who neglects his daily rites for as long as a fortnight attains purification only through a great expiation.
Verse 41 (vishnu.3.18.41)
saṁvatsaraṁ kriyāhāniryasya puṁso'bhijāyate tasyāvalokanāt sūryo nirīkṣyaḥ sādhubhiḥ sadā
For that man in whom the neglect of rites continues for a whole year, the good, after beholding him, should always look upon the sun [to purify themselves].
Verse 42 (vishnu.3.18.42)
spṛṣṭe snānaṁ sacailasya śuddherheturmahāmate puṁso bhavati tasyoktā na śuddhiḥ pāpakarmaṇaḥ
O great sage, upon touching such a man, bathing with one's clothes on becomes the means of purity; it is declared that no [full] purification exists for a man of sinful conduct.
Verse 43 (vishnu.3.18.43)
devarṣipitṛbhūtāni yasya niḥ śvasya veśmani prayāntyanarcitānyatra loke tasmānna pāpakṛt
From whose house the gods, sages, ancestors, and spirits depart unworshipped, that man in this world is not thereby a doer of sin.
Verse 44 (vishnu.3.18.44)
sambhāṣaṇānupraśnādi sahāsyāṁ caiva kurvataḥ jāyate tulyatā tasya tenaiva dvija vatsarāt
He who engages with such a man in conversation, question and answer, and even laughter with him -- his equality with that man arises, O Brahmin, within a single year.
Verse 45 (vishnu.3.18.45)
devādiniḥ śvāsahataṁ śarīraṁ yasya veśma ca na tena saṅkaraṁ kuryād gṛhāsanaparicchadaiḥ
With one whose body and house have been struck by the sighs of the gods and the rest, let him not intermingle house, seat, and other belongings.
Verse 46 (vishnu.3.18.46)
atha bhuṅkte gṛhe tasya karotyāsyāṁ tathāsane śete cāpyekaśayane sa sadyastatsamo bhavet
And he who eats in his house, or uses the same seat, or sleeps upon the same bed, at once becomes his equal.
Verse 47 (vishnu.3.18.47)
devatāpitṛbhūtāni tathānabhyarcya yo'tithīn bhuṅkte sa pātakaṁ bhuṅkte niṣkṛtistasya neṣyate
He who eats without worshipping the gods, ancestors, spirits, and guests eats nothing but sin; no expiation is prescribed for him.
Verse 48 (vishnu.3.18.48)
brāhmaṇādyāstu ye varṇāḥ svadharmādanyatomukhāḥ yānti te nagnasaṁjñāṁ tu hīnakarmasvavasthitāḥ
Whatever varnas, beginning with the Brahmin, turn their faces away from their own proper duty, established in base actions, attain the very designation of 'naked.'
Verse 49 (vishnu.3.18.49)
caturṇāṁ yatra varṇānāṁ maitreyātyantasaṅkaraḥ tatrāsyā sādhuvṛttīnāmupaghātāya jāyate
O Maitreya, where an excessive intermixture of the four varnas occurs, there this becomes a cause for the destruction of the conduct of the virtuous.
Verse 50 (vishnu.3.18.50)
anabhyarcya ṛṣīn devān pitṝn bhūtātithīṁstathā yo bhuṅkte tasya saṁlāpāt patanti narake narāḥ
He who eats without worshipping the sages, the gods, the ancestors, and the guest-spirits -- from conversing even with him, men fall into hell.
Verse 51 (vishnu.3.18.51)
tasmādetānnaro nagnāṁstrayīsantyāgadūṣitān sarvadā varjayet prājña ālāpasparśanādiṣu
Therefore the wise man should always avoid these 'naked' ones, corrupted by their abandonment of the triple Veda, in conversation and contact.
Verse 52 (vishnu.3.18.52)
śraddhāvadbhiḥ kṛtaṁ yatnāddevān pitṛpitāmahān na prīṇayati tacchrāddhaṁ yadyebhiravalokitam
A shraddha performed with effort by the faithful, honoring the gods, fathers, and grandfathers, does not satisfy them if it has been witnessed by these heretics.
Verse 53 (vishnu.3.18.53)
śrūyate ca purā khyāto rājā śatadhanurbhuvi patnī ca śaivyā tasyābhūdatidharmaparāyaṇā
It is also heard that in ancient times there lived on earth a famous king named Shatadhanu; his wife Shaivya was exceedingly devoted to righteousness.
Verse 54 (vishnu.3.18.54)
pativratā mahābhāgā satyaśaucadayānvitā sarvalakṣaṇasampannā vinayena nayena ca
Devoted to her husband, blessed, endowed with truthfulness, purity, and compassion, possessed of every auspicious mark, and endowed also with modesty and prudence.
Verse 55 (vishnu.3.18.55)
sa tu rājā tayā sārddhaṁ devadevaṁ janārdanam ārādhayāmāsa vibhuṁ parameṇa samādhinā
That king, together with her, worshipped the all-pervading Janardana, the God of gods, with the deepest concentration.
Verse 56 (vishnu.3.18.56)
homairjapaistathā dānairupavāsaiśca bhaktitaḥ pūjābhiścānudivasaṁ tanmanā nānyamānasaḥ
Through fire-oblations, recitation, gifts, and fasting, with devotion, and through daily worship as well, with mind single-pointed, letting it wander nowhere else.
Verse 57 (vishnu.3.18.57)
ekadā tu samaṁ snātau tau tu bhāryāpatī jale bhagīrathyāḥ samuttīrṇau kārttikyāṁ samupoṣitau pāṣaṇḍinamapaśyetāmāyāntaṁ sammukhaṁ dvija
Once, that husband and wife, having fasted in the month of Karttika, bathing together in the water, emerged from the Ganga; and then, O Brahmin, they saw a heretic coming toward them, face to face.
Verse 58 (vishnu.3.18.58)
cāpācāryasya tasyāsau sakhā rājño mahātmanaḥ atastadgauravāttena sakhābhāvamathākarot
He was a friend of the great-souled king's own teacher; therefore, out of respect for him, the king thereupon engaged him in conversation.
Verse 59 (vishnu.3.18.59)
na tu sā vāgyatā devī tasya patnī pativratā upoṣitāsmīti raviṁ tasmin dṛṣṭe dadarśa ca
But his wife, that devout, husband-devoted lady, kept to her vow of silence; thinking, 'I am fasting,' upon beholding him, she looked instead at the sun.
Verse 60 (vishnu.3.18.60)
samāgamya yathānyāyaṁ dampatī tau yathāvidhi viṣṇoḥ pūjādikaṁ sarvaṁ kṛtavantau dvijottama
O best of Brahmins, then that couple, duly and properly reunited, went on performing all the worship and the rest of Vishnu, in due manner.
Verse 61 (vishnu.3.18.61)
kālena gacchatā rājā mamārāsau sapatnajit anvāruroha taṁ devī citāsthaṁ bhūpatiṁ patim
With the passing of time, that king, conqueror of his rivals, died; the queen followed her lord, the king now resting upon the funeral pyre, in death.
Verse 62 (vishnu.3.18.62)
sa tu tenāpacāreṇa śvā jajñe vasudhādhipaḥ upoṣitena pāṣaṇḍasaṁlāpī yatkṛto'bhavat
That lord of the earth, on account of that transgression -- that while fasting he had conversed with a heretic -- was born as a dog.
Verse 63 (vishnu.3.18.63)
sā tu jātismarā jajñe kāśīrājasutā śubhā sarvavijñānasampūrṇā sarvalakṣaṇapūjitā
She too was born, remembering her past births, as the beautiful daughter of the king of Kashi, filled with every branch of knowledge, endowed with every auspicious mark.
Verse 64 (vishnu.3.18.64)
tāṁ pitā dātukāmo'bhūd varāya vinivāritaḥ tayaiva tanvyā virato vivāhārambhato nṛpaḥ
Her father wished to give her to a suitor, but he was restrained by her; on account of that slender maiden alone, the king refrained from beginning any marriage arrangement.
Verse 65 (vishnu.3.18.65)
tataḥ sā divyayā dṛṣṭyā dṛṣṭvā śvānaṁ nijaṁ patim vidiśākhyaṁ puraṁ gatvā tadavasthaṁ dadarśa tam
Then, by her divine sight, having beheld her own husband as a dog, she went to the city named Vidisha and saw him there, in that very state.
Verse 66 (vishnu.3.18.66)
taṁ dṛṣṭvaiva mahābhāgaṁ śvabhūtaṁ tu patiṁ tathā dadau tasmai varāhāraṁ satkārapravaṇaṁ śubhā
That blessed and auspicious lady, having beheld him, her very husband, become a dog, gave him excellent food with great courtesy.
Verse 67 (vishnu.3.18.67)
bhuñjan dattaṁ tayā so'nnamatimṛṣṭamabhīpsitam śvajātilalitaṁ kurvan bahu cāṭu cakāra vai
Eating the most delicious, desired food given by her, and behaving with the playful charm characteristic of dogs, he wagged his tail a great deal, showing much affection.
Verse 68 (vishnu.3.18.68)
atīva vrīḍitā bālā kurvatā cāṭu tena sā praṇāmapūrvamāhedaṁ dayitaṁ taṁ kuyonijam
Seeing him wagging his tail with affection, that maiden was exceedingly ashamed; bowing first, she spoke thus to her beloved, now born into that low form of life.
Verse 69 (vishnu.3.18.69)
smaryatāṁ tanmahārāja dākṣiṇyalalitaṁ tvayā yena śvayonimāpanno mama cāṭukaro bhavān
'O great king, remember, how becomingly you have wagged your tail -- by which you, having attained the state of a dog, have now become one who fawns upon me.'
Verse 70 (vishnu.3.18.70)
'It is by conversing with a heretic immediately after your sacred bathing that you have attained this despicable womb; do you not remember that, O lord?'
Verse 71 (vishnu.3.18.71)
śrīparāśara uvāca tayaivaṁ smārite tasmin pūrvajātikṛte tadā dadhyau ciramathāvāpa nirvedamatidurlabham
Sri Parashara said: Thus reminded by her of the deed done in his former birth, he pondered for a long time, and then attained a renunciation exceedingly rare to achieve.
Verse 72 (vishnu.3.18.72)
nirviṇṇacittassa tato nirgamya nagarādbahiḥ maruprapatanaṁ kṛtvā śārgālīṁ yonimāgataḥ
With his mind now turned from the world, he went forth outside the city, and, falling in the desert, attained the womb of a jackal.
Verse 73 (vishnu.3.18.73)
sāpi dvitīye samprāpte varṣe divyena cakṣuṣā jñātvā śṛgālaṁ taṁ draṣṭuṁ yayau kolāhalaṁ girim
When the second year had arrived, she too, knowing by her divine eye that he had now become a jackal, went forth to the Kolahala mountain to see him.
Verse 74 (vishnu.3.18.74)
tatrāpi dṛṣṭvā taṁ prāha śārgālīṁ yonimāgatam bharttāramapi cārvaṅgī tanayā pṛthivīkṣitaḥ
There too, that lovely-limbed daughter of a king, beholding her own husband born into the womb of a jackal, spoke thus.
Verse 75 (vishnu.3.18.75)
api smarasi rājendra śvayonisthasya yanmayā proktaṁ te pūrvacaritaṁ pāṣaṇḍālāpasaṁśrayam
'O king of kings, do you remember, when you were established in the womb of a dog, how I told you of your former conduct, connected with converse with a heretic?'
Verse 76 (vishnu.3.18.76)
punastayoktaṁ sa jñātvā satyaṁ satyavatāṁ varaḥ kānane sa nirāhārastatyāja svaṁ kalevaram
Then, knowing the truth of what she had again spoken, that best of the truthful, in that very forest, without food, cast off his own body.
Verse 77 (vishnu.3.18.77)
bhūyastato vṛko jajñe gatvā taṁ nirjane vane smārayāmāsa bharttāraṁ pūrvavṛttamaninditā
Then, after that, he was born a vulture; going to a solitary forest, that blameless lady again reminded her husband of his former history.
Verse 78 (vishnu.3.18.78)
na tvaṁ vṛko mahābhāga rājā śatadhanurbhavān śvā bhūtvā tvaṁ śṛgālo'bhūrvṛkatvaṁ sāmprataṁ gataḥ
'O illustrious one, you are not a wolf -- you are indeed King Shatadhanu; having become a dog, then a jackal, you have now attained the form of a wolf.'
Verse 79 (vishnu.3.18.79)
smāritena yathā vyaktastenātmā gṛdhratāṁ gataḥ apāpā sā punaścainaṁ bodhayāmāsa bhāvinī
When, being thus reminded, the truth had become manifest to him, by that very act his soul attained the state of a vulture; and again that sinless lady, foreseeing what was to come, made him understand.
Verse 80 (vishnu.3.18.80)
narendra smaryatāmātmā hyalaṁ te gṛdhraceṣṭayā pāṣaṇḍālāpajāto'yaṁ doṣo yadgṛdhratāṁ gataḥ
'O king, remember your true self; enough now of vulture-like behavior. It is this very fault, born of converse with a heretic, by which you have attained the state of a vulture.'
Verse 81 (vishnu.3.18.81)
tataḥ kākatvamāpannaṁ samanantarajanmati uvāca tanvī bharttāramupalabhyātmayogataḥ
Then, in the very next birth thereafter, when he had attained the state of a crow, that slender lady, recognizing him by her own power of yoga, spoke to her husband.
Verse 82 (vishnu.3.18.82)
aśeṣabhūbhṛtaḥ pūrvaṁ vaśyā yasmai baliṁ daduḥ sa tvaṁ kākatvamāpanno jāto'dya balibhuk prabho
'You, to whom formerly all kings, subject to you, used to pay tribute -- you yourself, having attained the state of a crow, O lord, have today become one who eats the offerings left for crows.'
Verse 83 (vishnu.3.18.83)
evameva ca kākatve smāritasya purātanam tatyāja bhūpatiḥ prāṇān mayūratvamavāpa ca
In this same way, in the state of a crow too, being reminded of his former history, that king cast off his life, and attained the form of a peacock.
Verse 84 (vishnu.3.18.84)
mayūratve tatassā vai cakārānugatiṁ śubhā dattaiḥ pratikṣaṇāṁ bhojyairbālā tajjātibhojaneḥ
In the state of a peacock too, that auspicious lady followed him, and that maiden went on, at every moment, feeding him with the foods appropriate to that species.
Verse 85 (vishnu.3.18.85)
tatastu janako rājā vājimedhaṁ mahākratum cakāra tasyāvabhṛthe snāpayāmāsa taṁ tadā
Then, thereafter, King Janaka performed the great horse-sacrifice; at its final purificatory bath, he had that peacock too bathed.
Verse 86 (vishnu.3.18.86)
sasnau svayaṁ ca tanvaṅgī smārayāmāsa cāpi tam yathāsau śvaśṛgālādiyoniṁ jagrāha pārthivaḥ
That slender-limbed lady too, having herself bathed, again reminded him of how that king had come to attain the wombs of a dog, a jackal, and the rest.
Verse 87 (vishnu.3.18.87)
smṛtajanmakramaḥ so'tha tatyāja svakalevaram jajñe sa janakasyaiva putro'sau sumahātmanaḥ
Recalling the sequence of his births, he then cast off his own body, and was born as the very son of the great-souled Janaka.
Verse 88 (vishnu.3.18.88)
tataḥ sā pitaraṁ tanvī vivahārthamacodayat sa cāpi kārayāmāsa tasyā rājā svayaṁvaram
Then that slender lady urged her father toward marriage; that king too then arranged her svayamvara (self-choice marriage ceremony).
Verse 89 (vishnu.3.18.89)
svayaṁvare kṛte sā taṁ samprāptaṁ patimātmanaḥ varayāmāsa bhūyo'pi bharttṛbhāvena bhāminī
When the svayamvara took place, that fair lady, recognizing him who had come there as her own destined husband, once again chose him in the spirit of a wife.
Verse 90 (vishnu.3.18.90)
bubhuje ca tayā sārddhaṁ sambhogānnṛpanandanaḥ pitaryuparate rājyaṁ videheṣu cakāra saḥ
The prince continued to enjoy life with her; and, when his father had departed for the next world, he took up the governance of the kingdom of Videha.
Verse 91 (vishnu.3.18.91)
iyāja yajñān subahūn dadau dānāni cārthinām putrānutpādayāmāsa yuyudhe ca sahāribhiḥ
He performed many sacrifices, gave gifts to petitioners, begot sons, and also waged war with his enemies.
Verse 92 (vishnu.3.18.92)
rājyaṁ bhuktvā yathānyāyaṁ pālayitvā vasundharām tatyāja sa priyān prāṇān saṁgrāme dharmato nṛpaḥ
Having duly enjoyed his kingdom, and having protected the earth, that king, righteously, gave up his beloved life in battle.
Verse 93 (vishnu.3.18.93)
tataścitāsthaṁ taṁ bhūyo bharttāraṁ sā śubhekṣaṇā anvāruroha vidhivad yathāpūrvaṁ mudānvitā
Then that lady of auspicious eyes, filled with joy, once again followed her husband, now upon the funeral pyre, duly, as before.
Verse 94 (vishnu.3.18.94)
Thus, together with that princess, that king passed even beyond the worlds of Indra, and attained those imperishable worlds.
Verse 95 (vishnu.3.18.95)
svargākṣayatvamatulaṁ dāmpatyamatidurlabham prāptaṁ puṇyaphalaṁ prāpya saṁśuddhiṁ tāṁ dvijottama
O best of Brahmins, they attained an incomparable, imperishable heaven, and a union of husband and wife exceedingly rare to obtain -- this meritorious fruit they attained by virtue of that very purification.
Verse 96 (vishnu.3.18.96)
eṣa pāṣaṇḍasambhāṣāddoṣaḥ prokto mayā dvija tathā'śvamedhāvabhṛthasnānamāhātmyameva ca
O Brahmin, this fault of conversing with a heretic has thus been told to you by me, and likewise the greatness of the final purificatory bath of the horse-sacrifice.
Verse 97 (vishnu.3.18.97)
tasmāt pāṣaṇḍibhiḥ pāpairālāpasparśanaṁ tyajet viśeṣataḥ kriyākāle yajñādau cāpi dīkṣitaḥ
Therefore one should avoid conversation and contact with sinful heretics, especially at the time of ritual observance, and even while consecrated for a sacrifice or the like.
Verse 98 (vishnu.3.18.98)
kriyāhānirgṛhe yasya māsamekaṁ prajāyate tasyāvalokanāt sūryaṁ paśyeta matimān naraḥ
Him in whose house the neglect of rites continues even for a single month -- let the wise man, after beholding him, look upon the sun.
Verse 99 (vishnu.3.18.99)
kiṁ punaryaistu santyaktā trayī sarvātmanā dvija pāṣaṇḍabhojibhiḥ pāpairvedavādavirodhibhiḥ
O Brahmin, what then need be said of those who have wholly abandoned the triple Veda -- sinful men who eat the food of heretics, opposed to the doctrine of the Veda?
Verse 100 (vishnu.3.18.100)
sahālāpastu saṁsargaḥ sahāsyā cātipāpinī pāṣaṇḍibhirdurācāraistasmāttān parivarjayet
Conversing with them is itself a form of contact, and even laughing with them is exceedingly sinful; therefore such heretics of evil conduct should be entirely avoided.
Verse 101 (vishnu.3.18.101)
pāṣaṇḍino vikarmasthān vaiḍālavratikāñchaṭhān haitukān vakavṛttīṁśca vāṅmātreṇāpi nārcayet
Heretics established in forbidden actions, cat-vowed deceivers, mere logic-choppers, and those of the crane-like (hypocritical) conduct -- let him not honor them even by mere words.
Verse 102 (vishnu.3.18.102)
dūratastaistu samparkaḥ tyājyaścāpyatipāpibhiḥ pāṣaṇḍibhirdurācāraistasmāttān parivarjayet
Contact with them should be avoided from a distance, and likewise with the exceedingly sinful; therefore such heretics of evil conduct should be entirely avoided.
Verse 103 (vishnu.3.18.103)
ete nagnāstavākhyātā dṛṣṭyā śrāddhopaghātakāḥ yeṣāṁ sambhāṣaṇāt puṁsāṁ dinapuṇyaṁ praṇaśyati
These 'naked' ones have thus been described to you -- destroyers of a shraddha by the mere sight of them; by conversing with whom the merit of an entire day is destroyed for men.
Verse 104 (vishnu.3.18.104)
ete pāṣaṇḍinaḥ pāpā na hyetānālaped budhaḥ puṇyaṁ naśyati sambhāṣādeteṣāṁ taddinodbhavam
These are sinful heretics; the wise man should not converse with them; by conversing with them, the merit produced on that very day is destroyed.
Verse 105 (vishnu.3.18.105)
puṁsāṁ jaṭādharaṇamauṇḍyavatāṁ vṛthaiva moghāśināmakhilaśaucanirākṛtānām toyapradānapitṛpiṇḍabahiṣkṛtānāṁ sambhāṣaṇādapi narā narakaṁ prayānti
With men who wear matted locks or a shaven head, but do so in vain, who eat their food fruitlessly, who are devoid of all purificatory rites, and who are excluded from the offering of water and the rice-ball to the ancestors -- by mere conversation with such men, people go to hell.
